Man slaps strangers toddler in ga walmart

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. (Sept. 2) - Police say a 61-year-old man annoyed with a crying 2-year-old girl at a suburban Atlanta Walmart slapped the child several times after warning the toddler's mother to keep her quiet.
A police report says after the stranger hit the girl at least four times, he said: "See, I told you I would shut her up."

Roger Stephens of Stone Mountain is charged with felony cruelty to children. It was unclear if he had an attorney and a telephone call to his home Wednesday was unanswered.
Authorities say the girl and her mother were shopping Monday when the toddler began crying. The police report says Stephens approached the mother and said, "If you don't shut that baby up, I will shut her up for you."
Authorities say Stephens then grabbed the 2-year-old and slapped her. The child began screaming and Stephens was arrested. Police say an examination showed the girl's face was slightly red.
A call to the girl's mother, identified in the police report as Sonya Mathews of Grayson, was answered by a woman who identified herself as Sabrina Mathis, the victim's aunt.
Mathis said Wednesday that the girl is doing fine.
"As of today, she has really forgotten about it," Mathis said. "She's been playing."
Mathis said the girl's mother was shaken up over the incident.
"She's as well as to be expected," Mathis said. "Right now she's just trying to calm down."

I've been following this story. I cannot imagine WHY no one stepped in to help the mother of this child. This man should have been sprayed with pepper spray, at the very least!!!!! A psycho like this should be locked up for a very long time to protect our society. Who knows what else he is capable of doing? Can you just imagine having this nut for a neighbor? I sure hope he doesn't have children.

I can't believe anybody thinks they have the right to hit somebody else's child. I would flip out if a stranger ever struck one of my children. I hope this guy does some time in jail.

How do you expect to make a baby stop crying by slapping/hurting them? That will only make them cry more. This guy is an idiot, and I too, hope he has to serve time for this.

I think it is wrong but I also find it funny in some weird way..... he has a permanent scowl on his face and he just looks like he would be the type making this article funny to me he will go to prison for child abuse etc etc but thefact that he has that look and he slapped a baby goes hand and hand hahahahaha go look at his picture he looks like the grinch. It's not funny, but in a horrible way it is. The old grouch was fed up.
I saw a little boy in Walmart one time and he was throwing a ball at the merchandise on the top shelf, knocking stuff down and making a mess. So I asked him where his mom was, and he pointed a couple aisles over, and I asked him if she knew what he was doing. He said "No" so I gave him my meanest look and I said "I think I'll TELL" He turned white and put the ball down and ran to go find his mom. LOL.
