ORANGEBURG, S.C. – A South Carolina mother who claimed her children drowned when their car careened into a river was charged with murder Tuesday after authorities said she confessed to suffocating the two toddlers and then faking the accident.

Sheriff Larry Williams said 29-year-old Shaquan Duley told investigators she was distraught about money troubles and unemployment and that she killed her children by putting her hand over their mouths after a dispute with her own mother. He says Duley then strapped the children into her car and drove it into a river Monday morning.

ORANGEBURG, SC (CNN) -- South Carolina authorities will bring murder charges against a woman who admitted to suffocating two of her children, who were found in a car submerged in a river Monday, Orangeburg County Sheriff Larry Williams said in a news conference Tuesday.

Investigators had previously identified "some issues that needed to be unraveled" in the case, he said, but as 29-year-old Shaquan Duley was interviewed throughout the evening, "we discovered some other issues that we had great concern (about)."

Williams told CBS he thought from the outset "we had a deceptive mother" and that investigators shared his "gut feeling" that something wasn't right. Williams said Monday the case had "a stench of foul play."

Piper, on the news Monday, they showed the car being pulled out of the water. They could tell then that the car did not wreck, but was driven into the river. The murdering mom walked about a mile before flagging down a motorist who had a phone to call 911, and she told them she needed help getting her kids out of her wrecked car. She didn't tell them the car was under water. When LE got there and she said she had a wreck and the car went into the water, they noticed she was not wet.

And the car was in neutral. I know last night they were assuming the children had drowned. So sad why these mothers won't just turn these babies over to someone instead of murdering them. They didn't ask to be brought into this world.

How sad. 2 more baby angels. RIP.

I hope this doesn't sound bad, but I hope they both really were dead before they hit the water, so they didn't actually drown, strapped into a car seat.

Hundreds at funeral for dead SC toddlers

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Hundreds of mourners have gathered for the funeral for two South Carolina toddlers authorities say were killed by their mother before they were strapped into a car and rolled into a river.

Services were being held in Orangeburg on Friday for 2-year-old Devean C. Duley (DAY'-vee-uhn DOO-lee) and 18-month-old Ja'van T. Duley ((jah-VAHN' DOO-lee).
