NEW PLYMOUTH — Robert Manwill was a vivacious, loving 8-year-old second grade boy, who spent most of his time in New Plymouth, with his father Charles Manwill. Charles had primary custody of Robert, and was divorced from Robert’s mother Melissa Scott Jenkins. Jenkins lived in Boise with her boyfriend Daniel Ehrlick. Robert Manwill was visiting his mother, when he disappeared in a Boise neighborhood July 24, 2009. Manwill was reported missing, and police led a massive search with hundreds of local volunteers.

Manwill’s disappearance ended in tragedy when his body was discovered in the New York Canal near Kuna. Residents from New Plymouth and Boise were stunned by the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Robert Manwill.

I have been checking Idaho media outlets, Google and Yahoo everyday to see if there is an update regarding the jury selection for the trial of Daniel Ehrlick. Jury selection started last Wednesday, 5-11-11.

Hopefully, one day this week a jury will be sworn in and the trial can proceed!

Murder by Torture Case Goes To Trial

BOISE, Idaho -- 38 year-old Daniel Ehrlick sat in silence today as state prosecutors told a jury how he brutally tortured and killed his 8 year-old step-son Robert Manwill in July of 2009.

Ehrlick is accused of beating the young boy until the point of death, then dumping the boy's body in a nearby canal.

Ehrlick has pleaded not guilty to the charge of first-degree murder in the case.

In her opening statement, State Prosecutor Jill Langhorst said the evidence against Ehrlick was "overwhelming," and she was confident that the Boise man would be found guilty.

"The last days and week's of Robert's life were filled with pain and fear, and helplessness," Langhorst said, describing the conditions that led up to his death.

BOISE -- More disturbing details in the murder of Robert Manwill continue to emerge in an Ada County courtroom. Daniel Ehrlick, the former boyfriend of Robert's mother, is accusing of torturing and killing the 8-year-old in the summer of 2009.

When the search for Robert began on July 24, 2009, investigators believed he was alive. For 10 days the community searched for the missing boy. Thousands of people volunteered their time to search neighborhoods, canal banks and other areas. On August 3, 2009, a traffic flagger spotted what turned out to be Robert’s body floating in the New York Canal near Kuna.

On August 18, 2009, police arrested Ehrlick and Robert’s mother Melissa Jenkins, charging them with Robert’s murder. Jenkins pleaded guilty in January to a lesser charge of second-degree aiding and abetting.

Now, after 22 months, Ehrlick’s trial began with opening statements Tuesday.

BOISE -- It is day two of testimony in the trial of Daniel Ehrlick, the man accused of murdering his girlfriend's son, 8-year-old Robert Manwill, nearly two years ago. Manwill's body was found in August of 2009 in the New York Canal.

In court Wednesday morning there was more testimony from a canal expert who talked about how easily accessible the New York Canal is near Vista Avenue.

Pathologist explains Manwill's death

The second witness was a county forensic pathologist. He was called to the canal when Manwill's body was found, and performed the autopsy.

The pathologist says Manwill died from trauma to the head and abdomen and was likely put into the canal within hours of his death.

He says Manwill's brain injury was likely from the back of his head hitting an object. He says his stomach injuries caused internal bleeding, and confirmed they could be from a 260- to 280-pound man dropping his knees onto a child (which is what prosecutors claim Ehrlick did).

The pathologist says Manwill survived those injuries originally, but they were fatal.

On Tuesday, prosecutors said rocks were put in Manwill's pockets to weigh him down in the water. Based on court photos, the rock appears to be around three-inches in diameter.

When a Boise police detective and an FBI agent asked Daniel Ehrlick why he lied at first and said he never physically punished Robert Manwill, Ehrlick said he didn’t want to get in trouble.

But when those officers tried to get him to admit he hurt or killed the 8-year-old, Ehrlick angrily denied responsibility numerous times, according to a recording jurors heard Wednesday afternoon in the second day of Ehrlick’s first-degree murder trial.

Ehrlick, 38, said it was Robert’s mother, Melissa Jenkins, who decided to punish the boy and hide his bruises from social workers. But she had already started to point the finger at him.

Daniel Ehrlick told police he suspected Melissa Jenkins was blaming him for the abuse of Robert Manwill because he was threatening to leave her — and take her 18-month old son Aidan with him.

Ehrlick told police he threatened to leave Jenkins several times before Robert disappeared because she constantly lied to him, and that was probably why she told police Ehrlick abused Robert — so he wouldn't be able to keep custody of Aidan.

On Friday, we heard from two doctors, both expert witnesses for the state, who talked about their interpretation of Manwill's autopsy results and abuse they believe those results indicate.

Daniel Ehrlick's murder trial testimony turns to forensic evidence Friday

After three days of testimony about police interviews with Daniel Ehrlick, day four of his first-degree murder trial slowed way down with testimony about collecting evidence.

So far, the jury has heard testimony about how flecks of biological material found in the hallway of Ehrlick's apartment turned out to be oatmeal and raisin vomit.

That testimony has taken up about four hours, since Thursday afternoon, and will likely take up most of the day Friday.

The evidence is significant for prosecutors because they say Ehrlick punished Robert Manwill by making him eat oatmeal and raisins — and it appears he vomited that up July 24, 2009, the day police suspect the boy died.

BOISE -- The first week of the Manwill murder trial ended Friday with jurors getting a big dose of technical testimony from various forensic experts.

Daniel Ehrlick is accused of beating Robert Manwill to death nearly two years ago.

The 8 year old was still missing in late July of 2009 when police began collecting evidence at the Boise Bench apartment Ehrlick shared with Robert's mother, Melissa Jenkins.

Forensic experts testified how they gathered biological evidence that included traces of oatmeal and raisins thrown up by Robert -- a meal the little boy hated but prosecutors say Ehrlick forced him to eat.

Investigators also removed part of an apartment wall where a hole had been knocked in then covered up with paper and tape. Human hairs were found in the hole.

Ehrlick's conversations with law enforcement were played Thursday during his first-degree murder trial in Boise. Ehrlick has pleaded not guilty in the 2009 killing of Robert, whose body was found in a canal about a week after his disappearance set off a massive search across Boise.

Neighbor testifies she saw big change in Manwill before his death

BOISE -- A neighbor who knew 8-year-old Robert Manwill testified against Daniel Ehrlick Monday saying the boy's mood changed dramatically before his death and Ehrlick made her uneasy during the search for Manwill.

It was day five in the jury trial of Daniel Ehrlick. He's charged with murdering Robert Manwill by beating him to death in 2009.

That neighbor, Lenora Poncia, testified that she was with Manwill a lot the summer before he died, and that they were inseparable. He'd come over to her apartment while she cooked or cleaned.

“We were kind of inseparable that summer. I saw him almost every day,” she said.

Ehrlick is on trial for first degree murder, accused of beating eight-year-old Robert to death nearly two years ago.

The neighbor told jurors Robert was one of the sweetest boys she ever knew.

But by summer 2009, Robert's personality had changed, she said, and he was constantly depressed.

Prosecutors are making their case against Daniel Ehrlick

A few days after 8-year-old Robert Manwill disappeared, police found this note in the apartment the boy’s mother shared with her boyfriend:

“Robert, please stay in here and watch TV. We went looking for you. We will keep checking in. Mom and everyone loves you. We miss you. Love mom and daddy (Danny).”

Jennifer Delaney, who helps supervise the Boise Police crime lab, testified that the note was found on the top page of an open binder on a computer desk in Ehrlick’s apartment — several days into the search of Robert, who was reported missing July 24, 2009.

The evidence was entered by Ada County prosecutors and is possibly being used to help illustrate what police have accused Melissa Jenkins and Daniel Ehrlick of doing since the day the boy was reported missing — misleading police and purposefully not telling them what really happened.

For some reason, this particular tragedy has weighed especially heavy on my heart for a long time. Maybe it's because I have grandsons and looking at pics and videos of Robert makes me think of them and I cannot imagine something so horrific happening to them. Robert was just a little boy enjoying all the little boy things of life until this monster changed his whole life before murdering him.

Another innocent little life taken from the world way too soon.

While the search for eight-year-old Robert was underway, Carrillo told jurors Ehrlick and Robert's mother, Melissa Jenkins, gave her their cell phones and asked her to tell anybody who called the couple was asleep.

"And she (Jenkins) continued to say the less I knew, the better off I was," Carrillo testified, "and that I could be called as a witness."

BOISE -- Testimony resumed today in day six of the trial against Daniel Ehrlick.

Neighbors talked about Ehrlick's behavior which made them uneasy.

Ehrlick is on trial for the murder of 8-year-old Robert Manwill in 2009.

Neighbors, some of whom were around Ehrlick regularly, described different scenarios that made them nervous.

In the days after he reported Manwill missing, for example, a husband and wife have both testified hearing Ehrlick ask Melissa Jenkins to come talk with him before police arrived so they could "get our stories straight."

A woman who lived in the apartment above Melissa Jenkins and Daniel Ehrlick told an Ada County jury Tuesday that Jenkins told her “the less I knew the better off I was” about Robert Manwill’s disappearance.

Carol Carrillo was one of the first neighbors to speak up for the couple after they were arrested, saying she trusted her own kids with them.

In court Tuesday, she said Jenkins and Ehrlick gave her their cellphones on July 28 — four days after Robert Manwill was reported missing, but days before he was found — and was told if anyone called, to say they were asleep, so the couple could take a walk.

BOISE -- Prosecutors called members of defendant Daniel Ehrlick's family to the stand who testified they were concerned about how Ehrlick and Robert Manwill's mother Melissa Jenkins were treating the boy.

Daniel Ehrlick's younger brother David told jurors Daniel usually was either ignoring 8-year-old Robert, or excessively punishing the boy for no reason.

"I was disturbed," David said. "We all were."

Daniel Ehrlick faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with Roberts death, which forensic experts say was caused by blunt force trauma to the head and chest.

The first witness of the day was a man who says he used to sell Daniel Ehrlick marijuana.

Brother testifies against Daniel Ehrlick in first-degree murder trial

David Ehrlick told an Ada County jury Wednesday that 8-year-old Robert Manwill was constantly grounded or in trouble in the summer of 2009, but he had no idea why.

Daniel Ehrlick — David's older brother — always seemed to be punishing the boy, like making him sit on his hands, stand with his nose against the wall or stay on the couch at family gatherings while all the other kids played outside, David Ehrlick told an Ada County jury Wednesday.

Prosectors are making their case against Daniel Ehrlick, who is accused of dumping Robert Manwill's body in a canal after the boy died from weeks of escalating abuse.

David Ehrlick said Robert would get in trouble for doing things like asking for a drink of water or to go the bathroom.

It has been 7 days of testimony in the trial of Daniel Ehrlich. The State is slowly making their case.

It is so sad that Robert would get in trouble for asking for a drink of water or to go to the bathroom.

On his 8th birthday, he was in "punishment." How horrible is that for an 8 year old child!

I am very proud of Daniel's family that they testified for the Prosecution. They want justice for little Robert.

Daniel's father was very concerned about Robert. Per family testimony, they kept Robert while Ehrlich and Jenkins, Robert's mom, went to a meeting.

Robert asked if he could play in the water of the sprinkler. They let him. They had to wrap shorts around Robert twice because he was so skinny.

Daniel Ehrlich's father was so concerned about Robert that he wanted to take him to a doctor but Jenkins and Ehrlich would not allow it.

I hope Ehrlich is found guilty and gets the maximum sentence. What a disgusting piece of garbage!

My heart aches for the abuse little Robert endured for a long time prior to the fatal injuries that resulted in his death. Then Ehrlich and Jenkins weight Robert with rocks and toss him in the New York Canal in Boise not far from their apartment.

What sick, disgusting child abusers!

Caseworkers say Ehrlick seemed good with children

BOISE, Idaho - Social workers met Daniel Ehrlick while working with Melissa Jenkins, Robert Manwill's mother, who was facing child abuse charges for harming her youngest son Aidan.

While working on that case, social workers observed how Ehrlick treated the toddler.

"Daniel was always very appropriate, and very loving with Aidan," says Laura Bessey, a social worker that counseled with the family. "He always took very good care of him."

BOISE -- State Health and Welfare workers took the stand Thursday to testify in Daniel Ehrlick's trial. He's accused of murdering 8-year-old Robert Manwill in 2009.

We've known Health and Welfare was involved with Daniel Ehrlick and his girlfriend Melissa Jenkins, but we haven't heard why they didn't intervene with Robert Manwill if he was really being abused over a period of time as prosecutors and witnesses have said.

We got some explanation in court Thursday.

Social workers explain Ehrlick's abrupt changes

BOISE -- In day of Daniel Ehrlick's murder trial, social workers testified the defendant had changed abruptly after he reported Robert Manwill missing in July 2009. Ehrlick is currently on trial for 8-year-old Robert's murder.

So far, jurors have heard testimony, even seen photos and videos, about Ehrlick's apartment being extremely messy and perhaps unsafe for young children. But Friday, we heard testimony that indicates it wasn't always that way.

In fact based on testimony Friday, that change, and others, may have happened in a matter of hours the night Robert was reported missing.

Starting in May 2009, two social workers referred by state Health and Welfare started visiting Daniel Ehrlick's apartment. Melissa Jenkins (Ehrlick's girlfriend and Robert's mother) had been convicted of injuring Robert's little brother.
