Natalie Wood Case Re-Opened
Natalie Wood: Detectives will interview captain as a first step
November 18, 2011 | 10:48 am
~Snipped~
The case was re-opened in part because of questions from the media about the circumstances surrounding Wood’s death. Some of those questions were prompted by the captain’s account of the night, detailed in the book “Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour.” His statements are also the centerpiece of a "48 Hours" segment, produced in conjunction with Vanity Fair, scheduled to air Saturday.
The 30th anniversary of Wood’s death is Nov. 29.
Davern’s published account of that night is different from the statements he originally provided to authorities. In the book, he says he lied to authorities about the events of that night. He is now describing a heated argument between Wood and her husband, actor Robert Wagner.

Mr. Davern told NBC TV's “Today” show on Friday that he made mistakes by not telling the truth about events leading to the Thanksgiving weekend death and had urged Los Angeles County sheriff's homicide investigators to reopen the case.
“Was the fight between Natalie Wood and her husband Robert Wagner what ultimately led to her death?” show host David Gregory asked.
“Yes,” Mr. Davern replied.
“How so?”
“Like I said, that's going to be up to the investigators to decide,” the captain said.

By Sheila Marikar | ABC News Blogs

The captain of the yacht on which Hollywood actress Natalie Wood sailed the night she died believes that Robert Wagner is to blame for her death.
“Yes I would say so,” Dennis Davern told NBC’s “Today” when asked if Wagner, Wood’s actor husband, was responsible. He admitted that he may have been at fault as well, saying, “We didn’t take any steps to see if we could locate her. It was a matter of don’t look to hard, don’t turn on search light, don’t call anyone.”

The investigation into Natalie Wood's 1981 death has been reopened, but police say her husband Robert Wagner is not a suspect in the actress' drowning.
Lt. John Corina told a news conference Friday that new information is substantial enough to take another look at the case. He said the information came from multiple sources.
This morning on TODAY, the former captain of the boat from which Wood drowned alleged that Wagner was responsible for the actress' death. Dennis Davern, who captained the couple's yacht, Splendour, said he was urging homicide investigators to look into the case.

(CBS News) LOS ANGELES - Natalie Wood's 1981 drowning is no longer being classified as an "accident" on her death certificate.
In a move that comes more than 30 years after the actress' mysterious drowning off Catalina Island, the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office is now re-categorizing her death as "undetermined."
A source who has discussed the case with authorities confirmed to CBS News that the Coroner's Office is changing the official cause of death, and said it is just one step in the continuing probe of the actress' death.
