Fiancé of suspected child killer admits to hearing intense cries from toddler Bianca Jones

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Before testifying as a witness for the prosecution, Anjali Lyons told jurors that she's now engaged to marry D'Andre Lane, the man who prosecutors say beat his 2-year-old daughter to death because she soiled herself one too many times.

Unless pressed by prosecutors, Lyons seemed unable, or unwilling, to recall what she told investigators months ago about the early morning hours of December 2 when Bianca's cries woke her up. Lyons also described noises that sounded like "taps".

But when she was shown transcripts of her testimony from an earlier hearing, Lyons conceded that the crying was intense and the hits were harder and louder.

Detroit — D'Andre Lane pleaded with police in December to reunite him with his family as they pressed him to reveal the whereabouts of his missing toddler daughter.

The Detroit father of seven and a Wayne County jury intently watched his hours-long exchange with police in a videotaped interview played in the second week of testimony in his trial on charges of felony murder and child abuse.

Lane is facing mandatory life in prison if convicted on allegations he fatally beat 2-year-old Bianca Jones on Dec. 2 over a bed-wetting incident, fabricated a carjacking and disposed of her body. The child's remains haven't been found.

DETROIT (WXYZ) - On the stand, the 8-year-old daughter of D'Andre Lane often said she could not remember what happened or what she told investigators about the morning prosecutors say Lane killed his 2-year-old Bianca Jones.

When she was asked who put the blanket over Bianca's face, the girl replied "My dad."

DETROIT (WXYZ) - When FBI agents had D'Andre Lane try to reenact the moment he says his daughter was snatched by carjackers , they were secretly videotaping the father accused of killing his 2-year-old daughter, Bianca Jones.

On the video that was played for the jury Tuesday, Lane often pauses for long stretches of time and says he doesn't remember many details of what happened or even the exact route he was taking the morning of December 2, 2011.

Lane tells FBI agent Christopher Hess that two men in a red car tricked him into stopping by beeping their horn and telling him one of the brake lights on his vehicle was out.

Detroit — Testimony continues Wednesday in the felony murder trial of a Detroit father accused in the December disappearance of his toddler daughter.

D'Andre Lane is on trial in Wayne County Circuit Court on allegations he fatally abused Bianca Jones over a bed-wetting incident on Dec. 2, disposed of her body and fabricated a carjacking. The child's body has not been recovered.

Defense contends prosecution has no evidence that proves Lane abused or murdered the child.

Jurors Wednesday are expected to hear from forensic canine experts, including Martin Grime, whose dog, Morse, allegedly detected the scent of human decomposition in Lane's car and home.

Detroit — Defense attorneys attempted Wednesday to minimize key evidence from a cadaver-detecting dog in the murder trial of a Detroit man accused in the death of his missing toddler.

D'Andre Lane is charged with felony murder and child abuse in the fatal beating of Bianca Jones, 2, over a bed-wetting incident and then disposing of her body and fabricating a carjacking to cover up the crime. The child's body has not been found.

Lane is facing mandatory life in prison if convicted. The case relies on circumstantial evidence and is using a cadaver dog named Morse, who is handled by forensic canine expert Martin Grime.

Detroit cop testifies she saw toddler who looked like missing Bianca Jones

Detroit — D'Andre Lane was tearful Tuesday as a Detroit Police officer detailed a December encounter with a child resembling his toddler daughter, more than a week after the girl went missing and was presumed dead.

Road patrol Officer Tanika Gibbs was called by defense Tuesday as the final witness in Lane's felony murder trial in Wayne Circuit Court.

But in court Tuesday, Gibbs insisted that she had seen the child when responding to a Dec. 10 call about a fight at a residence on Houghton on the city's west side.

The 12-year veteran, who had been assigned to patrols for less than two years, said she spoke to two women at the residence and saw the girl with French braids with beads that were parted down the middle with ponytails.

Gibbs conceded to prosecutors during cross examination that she didn't return to the home, contact prosecutors or Lane's attorney with the information.

The prosecution also pointed out that one of the women whom Gibbs spoke with at the home that night had a 2-year-old granddaughter.

D'Andre Lane faces mandatory life in prison if convicted in the Dec. 2 killing of Bianca Jones.

Lane is charged with first-degree murder and child abuse on claims he fatally beat the girl over a bed-wetting incident and fabricated an armed carjacking to dispose of the body.

A key piece of evidence in the circumstantial case against Lane is a forensic canine expert whose cadaver-detecting dog picked up the scent of human decomposition in Lane's car and home.

DETROIT (AP) — A jury in Detroit is set to begin deliberations Thursday in the murder trial of a man accused of fatally beating his 2-year-old daughter for wetting herself.

The body of Bianca Jones has never been found, but prosecutors say D'Andre Lane used a stick wrapped in a towel to beat Bianca to death Dec. 2, 2011, before disposing of her body.

Lane says carjackers took his vehicle with his daughter inside. Lawyers gave their closing arguments Wednesday, and Wayne County Circuit Judge Vonda Evans scheduled jury instructions for Thursday morning.

Evans rejected defense lawyer Terry Johnson's request that she issue a directed verdict of acquittal.

Does anyone know if the ski mask found in the alley that the scent dogs at the scene of the car allegedly trailed to was ever collected as evidence or tested to see if Lane's DNA was on it?

To me the ski mask does not represent something belonging to a carjacker --- keep in mind Lane never mentioned either of the carjackers wearing a ski mask and in fact gave a vague description of the guy's face (and said the other guy's face was hard to make out). But he never said he couldn't see them because they were wearing a mask. So the mask doesn't fit in. Carjackers (who are only interested in stealing a baby) don't take a ski mask to a crime and then decide not to wear it and then decide to ditch it even though they weren't wearing it. What DOES make sense is that Lane HIMSELF wore the ski mask so that he would not be identified as he was disposing of the body. That is the first and immediate thought when I heard about the ski mask -- that it was something Lane used to help conceal his crime so he could perpetuate his fabricated alibi.

DETROIT — A guilty verdict against D’Andre Lane, 32, of Detroit for the murder his 2-year-old daughter, Bianca Jones, is not a sure thing for the prosecution.

Lane's fate could be learned as early as Thursday when the jury is expected to begin deliberating at 9:30 a.m.

A guilty verdict would mean a life sentence.

There is no body or admission of guilt. The physical evidence is limited and the dead child's mother, Banika Jones, 32, believes her daughter is still alive.

The ski mask was mentioned by the defense during closing arguments: "Johnson pointed to the discovery of a ski mask and footprints documented near where Lane said the carjacking occurred as evidence that something may have happened there".

From the above link: "On Tuesday, a Detroit police officer testified a local scent dog picked up a trail from the car and led investigators to a ski mask in a vacant building nearby. Defense lawyers countered that police did not collect the mask or other evidence from the site".

I remember this case from when it first happened... Wasn't there witnesses or video to suggest there wasn't a carjacking or something like that? I can't really remember...

A jury in Detroit will resume deliberations at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the murder trial of a father accused of killing his 2-year-old daughter after a potty training accident.

Jurors in the trial of D’Andre Lane began deliberating at about 10 a.m. today. Lane is accused of murdering Bianca Jones and fabricating a story that she disappeared during a carjacking.

At about 3 p.m. today, jurors asked for transcripts from Lane’s teenage nephew, Treveon Lane. The judge denied that request.

I just watched a video @ the above link that said he is GUILTY.
I don't know how to bring it over, but if you click on the link above, scroll down and you can find the video. I found it strange they didn't make him stand up for the verdict. But thank God, they did the right thing.

DETROIT (WXYZ) - A jury has found D'Andre Lane guilty of murder in the death of his two-year-old daughter Bianca Jones.

Lane was found guilty of Felony Murder and First Degree Child Abuse.

The penalty is life in prison without the chance of parole. Lane will be back in court for sentencing on November 16.

Jurors could be seen crying after the verdict was read. Some of the officers in the case were also in tears.

A Detroit father who prosecutors say faked a carjacking to cover up the slaying of his 2-year-old daughter was found guilty Friday of first-degree murder and child abuse.

D'Andre Lane sat silent as the Wayne County Circuit Court jury foreman read the verdicts on both charges. Lane, 32, faces life in prison when sentenced on Nov. 16.

"This has been a very long and very emotional case for everyone involved," Judge Vonda Evans told the court.

"Nothing is gonna bring her back," said assistant prosecutor Qiana Lillard. "We're just gonna respect the jury's decision, and we're glad they did the right thing."

Defense attorney Terry Johnson said during the trial that prosecutors had uncovered no physical evidence, that Lane had been distraught at his daughter's disappearance and that he had cooperated with police.

"He was as surprised as we were by the verdict, based upon what we believe is a lack of evidence," Johnson said. "We're obviously disappointed. The jury put forth a verdict, and we have to respect that. Mr. Lane still maintains his innocence in this."

An appeals attorney will review the case, he added.

Thank you to the jury for paying attention and doing their jobs.

Lock up this POS for life so he can't father any more children, or beat any more kids, or kill anymore innocent toddlers for potty training accidents and lie about them being kidnapped and carjacked.

I'm just wondering if the hugely negative reaction to the Casey Anthony verdict and the flack that the jurrors received has made future juruors judge a little bit more harshly or else be judged themselves?

I'm not saying they were harsh -- I agree wholeheartedly with the verdict. I'm just noticing what seems to be a trend in "guilty" verdicts on some very circumstancial evidence lately -- DP included. There seems to be a heightened awareness to the aftermath of jurors decisions.

I really thought this guy would get off -- I honestly didn't see as much concrete evidence as some other current cases. Especially with the support of the baby's own mother!!! And conflicting testimony from the other children in the car, along with no body.

I'm just pretty shocked. But you're right-- they got it right this time. This guy was a baby-making-machine that he would just turn around and abuse and/or kill.

I think when a parent kills their own child that there should be mandatory sterilization as penalty -- male or female.

Detroit — D'Andre Lane insisted Monday that he didn't murder or abuse his missing toddler daughter and called a judge a "liar" for ordering him to prison for life.

"My daughter is alive. She's missing, she will be found," Lane said in his plea to Wayne County Circuit Judge Vonda R. Evans before she imposed the sentence.

"It's easy to point the finger at me. We will correct every wrong that's taken place in this system," he added.
