36-year-old Marjorie McCaffrey went missing sometime after 10 p.m. Saturday, March 17th. That’s according to her husband, Robert McCaffrey. It appears that Marjorie may have been murdered, either before 10 pm, at 10 pm, or after she was taken from the home. While there was a note left in the home, police have not released it, nor given any detail of the contents of the note, BUT IT WAS TYPED. One page of the police report is being withheld from the public as well.

Here’s Robert’s story…

He and Marjorie (and it is assumed their two children) went out to eat on Saturday afternoon. Sometime after that they got into what he describes as a “verbal fight”. At some point he took a walk around the neighborhood “because he had a lot on his mind”. He claims he returned to their West Ashley, South Carolina home at 7:45 pm and Marjorie was lying on the bed. He claims she ignored him and then, over 2 hours later at 10 pm, he had had it and needed to have his own space because he was “emotionally distraught” about his marriage and he drove to the family’s second home 4 hours away in Easley. He stayed there until he returned at 6:30 a.m. finding Marjorie missing.

Marjorie McCaffrey case: Robert and his road trip

So, eraser-husband Robert McCaffrey actually went FURTHER than Easley, South Carolina on the same night his wife, mysteriously disappeared and thoughtfully left behind everything that would be valuable to Robert…including her two children. His speeding ticket was 2:15 am in Traveler’s Rest, which is about 19 more miles to the northeast of Easley. Seems Robert couldn’t even have had time to stop by his Easley residence considering all the running about he did that night.

Marjorie McCaffrey case: POI identified, arrest pending

Charleston County Sheriff’s deputies continue to dig, and dig deep, into the disappearance (erasure) of Marjorie McCaffrey. They have been focusing on the McCaffrey residence and intend to return today. When asked if digging would be involved in their search of the McCaffrey property they responded that if the investigation led in that direction it would be. They have already confiscated Robert McCaffrey’s pick-up and have stated he is not cooperating. And, yes, Bob is lawyered-up.

Lots of new details have come out about the last day Majorie McCaffrey was seen alive, and the same day she was most likely murdered. Contrary to statements that Robert apparently made about that day, which were that they had a lunch about 2 pm on Saturday afternoon, went home, had an argument, he took a walk, and then a few hours later hit the road for Bob’s Most Excellent Adventure which included 8 hours of driving and a speeding ticket….that’s not what happened. At least part of it is not what happened.

Marjorie McCaffrey case: Now a homicide, Robert a suspect

A press conference was held by Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon yesterday. He announced that the investigation into missing Marjorie McCaffrey was now classified a homicide investigation. He also announced that Marjorie’s husband, Robert, was now a suspect in that homicide case.

Charleston County sheriff's deputies are still looking for clues into the disappearance of a 36-year-old West Ashley woman who hasn't been seen since March 17. Below is a timeline of events:

Saturday, March 17, 2:30 p.m. - Robert and Gayle McCaffrey go out to eat Saturday afternoon. Robert says after returning both get into a verbal argument and takes a walk around the neighborhood.

Saturday, March 17, 7:45 p.m. - Robert told deputies he returned from his walk and sees his wife on the bed who ignores him.

Saturday, March 17, 10 p.m. - According to Robert, he leaves their West Ashley home and heads to their home in Easley, SC.

Sunday, March 18, 2:15 a.m. - Authorities say Robert is issued a speeding ticket in Traveler's Rest.

TRAVELERS REST, S.C. – Authorities have released the dash camera video that shows the traffic stop of Robert McCaffrey just hours before he reported his wife, Gayle McCaffrey, missing from their Charleston home.

In the video, officer Patrick Lavery with the Travelers Rest Police Department pulls McCaffrey over on Highway 25 about 2:15 a.m. on March 18, 2012, for allegedly going 64 mph in a 45 mph.

At the beginning of the stop, McCaffrey is heard talking on a cell phone, which he attempts to hand Lavery. At one point, Lavery is seen placing his hand on his gun when he notices a handgun on the armrest in the truck.

McCaffery said he had just removed the gun from the arm rest and that he had no other weapons, “except a pocketknife”.

During the traffic stop, McCaffery said that he and his wife were having problems and he had driven to the area to see a girlfriend, but she had “blown him off”.

After the serial number on the gun, a 9mm, was checked, the firearm was returned to McCaffery, who received a citation for speeding as a result of the stop.

Ales, when I was learning to embed a video here (provided the embed code could be embedded here), my problem was that I was not getting all of the code.

You have to start from the left side and move the mouse from left to right on this particular video from WSPA.

Some videos you have to go down; some you can click on copy and it will copy to your clipboard. You would then just come here and left click to position the cursor and right click to paste. Viola! You're done!

If you continue to have problems, J4A can work with you to determine what the problem is.

Okay, I need to catch up on some things. Post away . . . . If you have any problems, please PM me. I'll try to check my PMs every 30 minutes or so.

If you make some type of mistake, please do not worry about it. J4A has the capability to go in and correct things.

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - The police officer who pulled over Gayle McCaffrey's husband the day his wife was reported missing said he saw a gun sitting in McCaffrey's truck.

The traffic stop was on March 18, just hours before Robert McCaffrey alerted authorities to his wife's disappearance.

Traveler's Rest police officer Patrick Lavery says he caught Robert McCaffrey going 63 mph in a 45 mph zone around 2 a.m. in the Upstate. Lavery says when he walked towards the truck, McCaffrey apologized for going too fast and handed him a cell phone.

McCaffrey then told the officer to talk to the person on the other line to which the officer declined.

According to Lavery, McCaffrey admitted he was having wife and girlfriend problems. Soon after, Lavery spotted a gun in McCaffrey's truck.

The case of a missing Charleston area woman - which had ties to the Upstate - is now being investigated as a murder.

The Charleston County Sheriff said the case of Gayle McCaffrey - missing since March 16 - is now a homicide investigation at a news conference Wednesday morning according to our sister station WCBD-TV.

McCaffrey's husband Robert - once considered a person of interest - is now considered a suspect after investigators determined a note supposedly left behind was fabricated.

The sheriff says a search for Gayle's remains will begin Thursday near the McCaffrey home

One of the reasons, a wary sheriff’s office would open a homicide investigation. Though relatives of Gayle McCaffrey are not ready publically indict anyone just yet.

The dash-cam video which was released to News 2 on Thursday -offers more insight into the McCaffrey's relationship and Robert McCaffery's interest in another woman.

As they dined on cabbage rolls Saturday night in their West Ashley home, 37-year-old Gayle McCaffrey and her husband had an argument.

He told police he left to clear his head, and at some point in the evening she left too. Maybe for good.

A typed note left at the home said she wanted to be somewhere else, possibly with someone else.

Her checkbook, her phone, her Jeep, her wedding ring were left behind.

And her two children were left alone as they slept in their house on Limestone Boulevard.

But for McCaffrey's family, the story doesn't add up. It just doesn't sound like the devout Baptist who loved her children and her hometown and had just spent hours making her husband a St. Patrick's Day meal.

Debbie Pearson will get custody of McCaffrey's two children, ages 10 and 4. Their father, Robert McCaffrey, will have supervised visits. According to Gayle McCaffrey's sisters, Robert McCaffrey wanted to hand over custody to the sisters as the search continues for his wife.

"We're very pleased that the courts have given us custody of the children," Pearson said. "We're going to get them home, get them back to the family, get them settled and then we're going to find my sister."

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Officials with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office say they are looking into a person of interest and anticipate an arrest will be made soon in the disappearance of Gayle McCaffrey.

Currently, we have a person of interest we are currently focusing our investigation on," Chief Deputy John Clark said at a press conference Thursday afternoon. "Our investigation has allowed us to gather evidence and have identified some people we are specifically talking to that is providing us with information surrounding her disappearance."

Earlier today deputies wrapped up an overnight search of the West Ashley home of missing woman Marjorie Gayle McCaffrey, a home she shares with her husband and two children. In a News 2 exclusive---

The attorney for her husband, Robert, tells News 2, what his client is doing to cooperate with police. When we visited his office, attorney Chris Lizzi, used a recent custody hearing as an example--

“My client has been cooperating with the investigation. We have pretty much done everything they have asked. We had the children placed with the aunt which was his previous desire. And he has stayed away from the residence to allow them time to find whatever evidence there is, to lead to anything that would help to bring his wife back home.”

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- They arrived at the plot of private property off Highway 61 at around 8 a.m. today. Boots on the ground with support from aircraft above, more than 150 people began combing the 100-acre area.

Among them, about 50 employees of The Citadel.

Marjorie Gayle McCaffrey was an employee of the military college. She was reported missing in March. On Wednesday of this week, Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon said her case had been upgraded to a homicide investigation.

The search today is a search for clues in hopes of bringing the 36-year-old woman's family closure. It's a search for her body.

In a Wednesday press conference, Sheriff Cannon said cell phone activity is what led them to focus on the area. Cannon also said at the press conference that his agency is investigating Gayle's husband, Robert McCaffrey as a suspect in the homicide.

Robert McCaffrey is the Charleston County Sheriff's Office key suspect in his wife's homicide investigation.

However, the father of two has not been arrested--mainly because all the evidence is circumstantial until deputies find Gayle McCaffrey's body.

Charleston Sheriff Al Cannon named McCaffrey the one, the only suspect during a press conference Wednesday morning. It is a move that surprised former Attorney General Charlie Condon.

Alessandra, Michelle Parker's case is one that comes to mind. I was really suprised in that case that DS2 was named the only suspect immediately in her case yet he had not been arrested nor has Michelle's body been found. This is extremely rare in both cases for these men to be called out as suspect's, LE rarely does it.

I assume in both cases LE must think that the Defense Attorney's are going to scream like Josh Powell & Drew Peterson did, "they have run off w/another man." Though it is not plausible, I guess Prosecutor's hate to take the chance that one juror might think, maybe they aren't dead.

In this case, Gayle McCaffrey has children, it scares the hell out of me that the murdering suspects have access to their children. Even though the Coxes got temporary custody of Braden/Charlie, Josh still had access to the children & murdered them too. I am glad Gayle's children are w/an Aunt.

Finding bodies seem nearly impossible in many cases, I hope this is not one of them. As Val used to say, "another one erased."

Alessandra, I know that DS2 has custody of the twin's & has had custody of them since Michelle disappeared EVEN THOUGH he is named as the only suspect in Michelle's disappearance. I didn't mention that DS2 had custody of the twin's because anyone following Michelle's case knows that.

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - The police officer who pulled over Gayle McCaffrey's husband the day his wife was reported missing said he saw a gun sitting in McCaffrey's truck.

The traffic stop was on March 18, just hours before Robert McCaffrey alerted authorities to his wife's disappearance.

Traveler's Rest police officer Patrick Lavery says he caught Robert McCaffrey going 63 mph in a 45 mph zone around 2 a.m. in the Upstate. Lavery says when he walked towards the truck, McCaffrey apologized for going too fast and handed him a cell phone.

McCaffrey then told the officer to talk to the person on the other line to which the officer declined.

According to Lavery, McCaffrey admitted he was having wife and girlfriend problems. Soon after, Lavery spotted a gun in McCaffrey's truck.

The woman, Gayle McCaffrey, went missing March 18. Her husband, Bob McCaffrey told authorities she left after the couple had an argument and never returned.

"It certainly concerns me we've not resolved the issue of where Gayle McCaffrey is," Cannon said during a one on one interview.

Cannon said all signs still point to Bob McCaffrey as a suspect.

The day after Bob McCaffrey called 911 to report his wife missing, he sat down with investigators and told his side of the story for five hours.

Since that debriefing more than two months ago, he hasn’t uttered a word to the authorities trying to find the West Ashley mother. Family members say the man who’s considered the suspect in Gayle McCaffrey’s presumed death won’t answer their questions either.

Attorney Chris Lizzi said the Sheriff’s Office is trying to develop evidence against McCaffrey by “misusing and misinterpreting” any inconsistencies in his story that could result from a follow-up interview. He wants an account of that interview as protection against them doing that, he said.

“If they have any additional questions, we can provide them with any additional answers,” Lizzi said, adding that McCaffrey has been heeding his counsel in not speaking out. “If there’s anything we left out that day, we can provide it.

I feel very terrible for the children of these women. I obviously don't understand how you can murder a spouse and walk away like nothing happened. But more so how do you do that to the children that you both brought into the world and supposedly love. What do you tell small children about a situation like this? When a parent dies of an illness there is evidence and things that you can point to as being why Mommy isn't coming back. But this...... what do you say... how do you help them to understand?

Sick twisted POS needs to man up and let his children find some answers. Young children blame themselves when parents separate... these children must be in turmoil not knowing and perhaps thinking if they would only have been better then mommy would not have left. That man needs to have some sense knocked into him... And give those children a hope at healing!!! just my opinion and trust me it is cleaned up and brought down quite a few notches so that it is printable!

I wonder if this is the same woman that he was seeing when Gayle suddenly "disappeared". When Robert reported Gayle "missing", he told the police that after having an argument with her, he drove to Easley (Pickens County) where him and Gayle had another house, they didn't own a house in Easly, Gayle's aunt and uncle live there, he lied to the police, he went to Northern Greenville Country to see the woman that he was interesting in. The woman was supposedly cooperating with the police.

Missing Persons organization joins in McCaffrey search

A missing persons organization will be working with authorities in effort to find new leads in the Gayle McCaffrey case, according to McCaffrey's sister, Helen Banach.

Representatives from Community United Effort, or CUE, are in Charleston Monday meeting with the Charleston County Sheriff's detectives about the case. Banach says the goal is for CUE and the Sheriff's office to divide and conquer--searching new areas and following up on other leads.

CUE also set up multiple billboards in North Charleston, Dorchester and Ladson, to attract more attention to the McCaffrey case, and even more are expected to be set up in the coming weeks.

The search for McCaffrey is now getting help from a missing persons organization that has been utilized in other high profile disappearances in South Carolina in the past.

Officials from Community United Effort (CUE) said they will be assisting the Charleston County Sheriff's Office on the case.

LADSON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Community United Effort's Center for Missing Persons is joining forces with the family of missing mother-of-two.

Gayle McCaffrey's sister, Helen Banach, has announced a press conference in the Food Lion shopping center on College Park Road, directly across the street from one of six billboards put up around the Lowcountry broadcasting the search for her sister.

Banach says that Adams Outdoor donated the six billboards that flash Gayle's picture along with a phone number people can call if they have any information on her disappearance. The billboards will be up for the next two weeks.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – Six months have passed since Gayle McCaffrey went missing.

At the Citadel Tuesday, co-worker James Grigg remembered McCaffrey, whose position has not yet been filled.

"It's been kind of surreal having an employee you see on a Friday, hoping she has a good weekend and Monday morning she's disappeared," he said.

McCaffrey was reported missing March 18. While many searches have been conducted, investigators have come up empty-handed.

In May, Charleston County Sheriff's office named her husband, Robert McCaffrey, a suspect in her disappearance and called the case a homicide.

Grigg says he knows Gayle well, and she was not one to miss work.

"She was always the first one at the office. No matter what time you arrived Gayle was sitting at her desk," he said.

Detectives search on horseback for missing woman Gayle McCaffrey

Charleston County Sheriff's Detectives and representatives from the CUE Center are conducting a search for clues in the Gayle McCaffrey case in the upstate.

A new search began Saturday off of Freeman Bridge Road in Easley around 8 a.m.

The father of Gayle McCaffrey is at the search. He is offering refreshments to searchers. He says he wanted to be here to show appreciation to those searching for any clues to his missing daughter.

Approximately 75 people from across the country are in Pickens County, searching. Some search on horseback, while others walk through the woods with search dogs.

Organizers of the search say there is no new information that leads them to believe they will definitely find anything today. The land being searched is about 200 acres of land owned by Gayle's family member.

Charleston County investigators found no new clues in the disappearance of Gayle McCaffrey during an Upstate search Saturday.

Charleston County sheriff’s deputies joined with the North Carolina-based CUE Center for Missing Persons and local law enforcement to scour a 200-acre property near Easley owned by the McCaffrey family.

They ended the search at 6:30 p.m. Saturday with no new leads in the 8-month-old case.

The search on the McCaffrey property was not based on any solid lead, just a hunch, given Bob McCaffrey’s proximity to the property around the time his wife was reported missing.

Investigators seek leads in Gayle McCaffrey disappearance

Investigators continue to look for leads in the disappearance of Gayle McCaffrey, the West Ashley woman who has been missing for a year.

Today, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office released photos of vehicles that belonged to her and her husband. Investigators are asking that anybody who saw the blue Dodge Ram pickup or dark blue Jeep Cherokee being driven around Bees Ferry Road in the early morning hours of March 18, 2012, to call the Sheriff’s Office at 202-1700 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
