More evidence to be made public in Casey Anthony case

By Alan Schmadtke, Orlando Sentinel
5:31 p.m. EST, February 15, 2010

More evidence in the murder case against Casey Anthony will be made public on Tuesday morning.

The State Attorney's Office put media outlets on alert today that it will make available three CDs or DVDs of evidence in the case.

It is not clear what information will be on the digitized files.

The State Attorney's Office does not comment on discovery.

Anthony is in the Orange County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder. She is accused in the 2008 death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Marie Anthony.

The toddler went missing in June 2008. Her remains were discovered in December less than a mile from where she and Casey Anthony lived, in the home of Anthony's parents, George and Cindy Anthony.

The state is seeking the death penalty.

Photos of duct tape, syringe and Gatorade bottle released today
Three CDs of information were released in the first-degree murder case against Casey Anthony

By Amy L. Edwards and Anika Myers Palm, Orlando Sentinel
9:23 a.m. EST, February 16, 2010

Photographs of a syringe, Gatorade bottle and a child's car seat are among the images released today in the first-degree murder case against accused daughter-killer Casey Anthony.

Also released was television news footage taken when Anthony's family, including parents George and Cindy, were still looking for Casey Anthony's 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Marie.

The footage from WFTV-Channel 9 shows a missing-child flier attached to something with a piece of duct tape.

Duct tape is significant in this case because previously released evidence shows the toddler's mouth was covered by tape when she died.

The syringe and Gatorade bottle have also come up in previously released evidence.

Records show trace amounts of chloroform, a potentially deadly chemical, on some of the evidence, though it's unclear whether the chemical played a role in the child's death.

Authorities ruled her death a homicide, but they could not determine how she died.

An FBI report in November shows investigators found a plastic Gatorade Cool Blue sports-drink bottle near the child's remains. A plastic bag labeled "Disposable Syringe Kit" with a syringe was found inside the bottle.

A report generated in June and labeled "Summary of results" by Dr. Michael Rickenbach of the FBI's labs indicates chloroform, testosterone, ethanol and water inside the syringe.

Chloroform has been depicted in movies and on television as a chemical used to render a person unconscious.

A person can die if too much of the chemical is inhaled. Chloroform also is the byproduct of the contact between chorine used in swimming pools and skin, sweat or urine. Commercially, it is used in refrigeration.

Casey Anthony is accused of killing Caylee in the summer of 2008.

Caylee's remains were found scattered in woods in December 2008, just blocks away from the east Orange County home she shared with her mother and grandparents, George Anthony and Cindy Anthony.

Also included are documents from the FBI Laboratory's Chemistry Unit, and several previously released items, including Casey Anthony's employee wage information and Orange County Sheriff's Office reports.

Evidence Includes Photos, Video Reports

POSTED: 7:16 am EST February 16, 2010
UPDATED: 9:53 am EST February 16, 2010

ORLANDO, Fla. -- More evidence was released Tuesday morning in the case against Casey Anthony.

The evidence includes televised video reports during the search for Caylee Anthony featuring interviews with Lee Anthony, who is Casey Anthony's brother.

Images of evidence taken from the crime scene were also released, including photos of duct tape. Investigators said duct tape was found on Caylee Anthony's body.

Several manuals were also released detailing quality assurance guidelines at the FBI's laboratories, as well as a report on water depths at the location where Caylee's body was found.

The body of Caylee was discovered in December 2008 in a wooded area near the family's home in east Orange County.

Casey Anthony is facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with her daughter's death.

Watch for the evidence to be posted on WESH.com.

Caylee's car seat and baby doll Sad

George and Cindy thought they did an excellent job cleaning that trunk, didn't they? Too bad they missed some spots. They knew exactly what they were cleaning up. Mad

Well, looky looky........the knife has a sticky substance and a fiber stuck to it. And the duct tape certainly wasn't cut with scissors. It's pretty obvious it was "sawed" thru with a knife with a serrated edge.

WFTV says it won’t retract report that the defense team called ‘this fabrication’

posted by halboedeker on May, 6 2009 2:20 PM

Casey Anthony's defense team wants a retraction from WFTV-Channel 9.

The station says no way.

Jose Baez's spokeswoman said WFTV's Kathi Belich was wrong when she reported this week that Baez "faxed copies of his motion for a
change of venue to some reporters before he ever filed it with the
court."

Baez spokeswoman Marti Mackenzie fired off an e-mail to the station: "Please retract this fabrication that you reported.
Let us know when you plan to retract your report."

"We're not going to retract it," WFTV news director Bob Jordan told me. "Faxed or handed. Makes no difference how it was transmitted. What matters is that it was transmitted to reporters."

Mackenzie said that simply wasn't so and that the motion wasn't provided to any reporter before it was filed.

"Their reports are tainted with the way they like to spin their own story," Mackenzie said today. "Kathi Belich, it appears, came late to a news conference so she could make her own entrance. She hangs back and then tries to grab Jose by herself. So much of this is about theater. These are things that are a trademark of Channel 9, the confrontational interview. "

Mackenzie said WFTV has sent out a message, through all its Anthony reporting, that the station is pro-prosecution. But this particular report — about the change of venue motion — was enraging because it was a fabrication, Mackenzie said.

Casey Anthony is charged with the first-degree murder of her daughter, Caylee.

Syringe, Doll Among Photos Released In Casey Case

Posted: 7:17 am EST February 16, 2010
Updated: 11:23 am EST February 16, 2010

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Images of a syringe, a Gatorade bottle, a car seat, a baby doll, the contents of a car's trunk and a kit used for testing chemicals are among the dozens of photos released by prosecutors in the case of a Florida mother charged with killing her toddler daughter.

EVIDENCE PHOTOS RELEASED 2/16/10
» Duct Tape, Knife | Car Seat
» Syringe, Gatorade Bottle, Substances
» Baby Doll | Steering Wheel Cover
» Alternate Light Source | Miscellaneous Pics

The evidence also includes video from WFTV Channel 9 that investigators say links a special kind of duct tape that the Anthonys had to the tape found covering Caylee's mouth.

Prosecutors trying the first-degree murder case of Casey Anthony released the photos Tuesday. The 23-year-old mother has pleaded not guilty and claims a baby sister kidnapped her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, in 2008.

Forensic testing revealed traces of chloroform in Casey Anthony's car. The chemical compound is used to induce unconsciousness and is also a component of human decomposition.

Caylee was last seen alive in early June 2008, but she wasn't reported missing to authorities until a month later.

Shortly after the evidence was released, Marti Mackenzie resigned as media relations consultant in Casey Anthony case.

"Effective today, I will no longer be a media liaison for the Casey Anthony defense team. All media inquiries about the Casey Anthony case can be directed to Liz Brown, at DePaul University College of Law Legal Clinic," Mackenzie wrote in the emailed released.

Latest Casey Evidence Includes Syringe Photos, FBI Test Details

Tuesday, February 16, 2010 11:51:24 AM
Reported by Jacqueline Fell

ORLANDO -- Pictures of evidence, a car seat, a syringe -- all are the latest photos and documents released by the state in their case against Casey Anthony.

But what do they mean? And how will the defense fight back?

Included in the three CD-ROMs released today are photos of a Gatorade bottle, syringe, brown liquid, toilet paper, and a baby doll that may have belonged to Caylee Anthony.

The disposable syringe set was discovered inside a Gatorade bottle near where Caylee's remains were found.

Documents released in the past have described the chemicals found inside the syringe.

A brown liquid, two cardboard rolls, a syringe and other pieces of debris were all found.

FBI test results showed the liquid in the containers was composed of chloroform and other elements.

Tests also showed that traces of chloroform were found in the syringe.

It's not know exactly where the bottle was found or how close to her remains.

The defense may argue the area near Hidden Oaks Elementary School is a heavily traveled and has nothing to do with the findings of Caylee's remains.

Other evidence photos include a trunk liner from Casey's car, a car seat, and stains on both that were analyzed.

There's more about how the media is doing it's own investigating in this case.

Specifically the duct tape - the state is examining media reports comparing the duct tape found on Caylee to the tape used to hang up missing posters before she was found.

There are also documents about the methods used by the FBI to analyze bones, teeth, and hair.

Read the documents included in today's release:

Piper, this was addressed in a previous doc dump.... apparently the adhesive is not from duct tape.... and since CA washed the knife, maybe the fiber is from the rag she used to either wash it or dry it.

The one thing I question is that I believe in CA's depo, she stated that the knife was from a set she kept in the back of one of her drawers and that they rarely used them... My question is if there is more than one knife in the set, then how can LE be sure CA gave them the right one.... visions of dog's toothbrush, anyone?

There has to be a timeline somewhere re the time the car was recovered/returned home and Cindy called Amy...What did George do after he took car home ...where was he during p/u Amy and Casey's recovery??? I'm still out in left field waiting for the ball in this crazy game....Who's on first??? The Ants had to know something werry werry bad had happened...I too think they cleaned up whether they will admit it or not....Why wash Crazys clothes??? and of course Cindy wouldn't tell the true condition of those clothes anyway...Mud?? stains??? of course they stunk like "death"...that was her excuse for washing them...They smelled foul...and why pull the car into the garage if it smelled so bad (even if they did leave the car windows open)...why not leave it outside to air out???? I know I should have put these querries in 3 Questions to Ask, but I felt they fit here...Just my 2 cents worth...I can't wait for this trial... On the baby doll link, it shows 2 different types of baby dolls, with 2 different dates. I've seen people questioning on other blogs if Caylee had 2 Mama dolls. I found this picture which was released on 2/18/09, which shows Caylee appeared to have at least 4 other bald-headed baby dolls.

okay.. i understand on a childs seat it could be anything, BUT it really really resembles dried, cleaned up blood.

i took a forensic science class long ago, and that was part of our curriculum.. to identify blood stains, enhance with luminol, and type and cross. they always threw us a loop with bleached out samples.. but i am sure we would have heard long ago, if there was blood found in the car seat..

the defensive crowd must have contracted a virus or something, they seem to be dropping like FLIES..

Quoting myself..... Very Happy

Another thought. Now that I re-read the info regarding the knife from the previous dump, it doesn't they the materials don't match the duct tape... it says they are "inconsistent" with.... and that while the materials are too limited to fully characterize, they remain suitable for limited comparison examinations....

And since CA washed the knife..... we don't know HOW she washed it.... possibly the dishwasher rather than by hand. Maybe the dishwasher detergent would alter the residue on the knife.... and we still have the same issue as we do about the duct tape from the crime scene being "consistent" or "inconsistent" with the duct tape found elsewhere... the degradation of the crime scene duct tape is tremendous....

So, IOW, I guess there is always a possibility the residue and/or fiber on the knife could turn out to be from the duct tape.

i have a Q...

when was the sunfire purchased? was it purchased as a new, or a used vehicle? i know it was origionally LA's car, but was it new when it was purchased?

the reason i am asking, there are A LOT of suspicious stains in the back of that car, and if ANY of them test positive for bodily fluids, i want to KNOW that they cannot claim that the previous owner put a dead body in the damn car.... if the only owners of the car were members of the anthony clan, that really narrows down WHO put the body in there.

Randi, I was thinking about that, also.....LA even said in his depo that the car had been used by a lot of different people...... I'm sure they will try to say it happened before the car was bought for LA's use..... and yes, it was a used car then, I believe.

Some Interesting Observations on today’s Discovery

Posted on February 16th, 2010 by Valhall

I thought I would create this post to note a few interesting observations about today’s release, and to also give a place for others to log their comments, observations, etc.

The first photos here:

There are no identifying marks on the first two photos so we do not know which piece of duct tape we are looking at. Could this be part of the Q104 that we haven’t got to study as well as the other pieces? The rust-colored marks at the top of the tape are a feature we haven’t really noticed before. The larger one appears to be a cut or scrape from a metal object, but this could be an illusion. If it is, in fact, a cut from something sharp, this would have required this piece of tape to be against something hard enough to resist enough force to allow the tape to be damaged in a longitudinal direction. That’s a curious thing to consider. Either that or the duct tape encountered something VERY sharp (much sharper than a kitchen butter knife). Also, the oddly shaped rust-colored indentation just to the left of the linear cut appears to be the indentation of a staple, or something else with similar shape. It could be that this tape was resting against the butt-end of a bent metal stiffener of some sort. Note how the ends are circular and then come to an unclosed position on the upper side. You can find this shape on cheap sheet metal shelving supports, etc.

More Info Released In Anthony Case
Casey Anthony Charged With Murder In Daughter's Death

POSTED: Tuesday, February 16, 2010
UPDATED: 6:58 pm EST February 16, 2010

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Images of a syringe, a Gatorade bottle, a car seat, the contents of a car's trunk and a kit used for testing chemicals are among the photos released by prosecutors in the murder case of Casey Anthony, who is charged with killing her daughter, Caylee.

Prosecutors trying the first-degree murder case of Casey Anthony released the photos, which could be used as evidence, on Tuesday.

The FBI tested dozens of items, but found very little scientific evidence linking Casey Anthony to Caylee's death, Local 6 reporter Mike DeForest said.

An FBI agent thought a stain in the back of Casey Anthony's car resembled the outline of a child's body, but lab tests were unable to determine what the stain was or what caused it. Another stain on Caylee's favorite doll was also determined to be insignificant.

The day Casey Anthony's mother, Cindy Anthony, discovered the foul smell in her daughter's car, she also found a knife inside, which she later admitted to washing. The FBI found residue on the knife, but could not match it to the duct tape later found around Caylee's skull.

Other than similar looking garbage bags, duct tape and a laundry bag, the FBI was unable to create many links between the crime scene and the Anthony family's home or Casey Anthony's car.

The FBI has not found a single hair, fingerprint or DNA sample that scientifically proves Casey Anthony was in the woods where Caylee's body was found.

Casey Anthony, 23, has pleaded not guilty and claims a baby sitter kidnapped Caylee, who was 2 years old when she was reported missing in 2008.

Forensic testing revealed traces of chloroform in Casey Anthony's car. The chemical compound is used to induce unconsciousness and is also a component of human decomposition.

Televised video featuring an interview with Casey Anthony's brother, Lee Anthony, was also released. A missing persons flier seen in the video shows a piece of duct tape holding the flier to a pole.

Caylee was last seen alive in early June 2008, but she wasn't reported missing to authorities until a month later.

Meanwhile, the media liaison for the Casey Anthony defense team has resigned.

According to a news release, Marti Mackenzie will no longer be working with the defense team, and all media inquiries about the Casey Anthony case will now be directed to Liz Brown, at DePaul University College of Law Legal Clinic.
