Updated: Amber Alert issued in Grand Rapids
February 24, 2010 3:00 PM
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Police in Grand Rapids are looking for a missing child believed to be in danger.
On Wednesday evening, police have located the suspected abductor, but the child is still missing.
Police say Jozlynn Mari Martinez was last seen in bed on Monday night at 11:00 pm. When the child's mother awoke at 9:00 am Tuesday, the child and her live-in boyfriend, Jeffrey Malmberg, were gone. Police say Malmberg did not take appropriate clothing for the child, but did take $2,800 in cash from the mother's purse.
The child's mother, Consuela Martinez, says that at first she thought Malmberg, who in the past has taken in the child for a few hours in the morning, was running errands and would be returning. Martinez checked throughout the day with family and friends but was unable to locate Malmberg or Jazlynn.
The missing child, Jozlynn Mari Martinez, is a two-year-old girl, described as standing 2 ' 9” tall, weighing 22 pounds with brown eyes, brown hair, with a scab on her chin and a spot on the right side of her head that doesn't grow hair. Martinez is said to walk with her feet turned inward.
The suspect, Jeffery Lynn Malmberg, is a 40-year-old white male. He is described as standing 5' 11”, weighing 170 pounds with brown eyes, black hair, a tattoo of a red rose on the top of his left forearm, and a tattoo on his right forearm. Malmberg was last seen wearing a blue GVSU hooded sweatshirt, and a gray/white/black winter coat.
The Kent County Prosecutor's Office has authorized a warrant charging Malmberg with one count of kidnapping and one count of larceny.
Newschannel 3 has learned that Malmberg has a long criminal history, including numerous arrests for drugs, as well as several domestic violence charges, which is part of what has police concerned.
As of 7:00 pm Wednesday, police say they have located Malmberg, who is currently being held by Lansing Police, but they have not yet located the missing girl. The search for her continues.
Anyone with information about the alleged victim or abductor is asked to immediately call 911 or contact the Grand Rapids Police Department at 616-456-3604.

Jeffery Malmberg in custody; Jozlynn Martinez still missing, Amber Alert still active

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- The man suspected of kidnapping a Grand Rapids girl has been taken into custody in Lansing, but police still don't know where the girl is.
Michigan State Police located 40-year-old Jeffery Malmberg of Grand Rapids in Lansing. An Amber Alert was issued for Malmberg after his girlfriend, Consuela Martinez told police he took her two year old daughter, Jozlynn Martinez.
Martinez was not with Malmberg when he was spotted in Lansing, and an Amber Alert is still active for the two year old. Jozlynn Martinez is 2 feet 9 inches tall, weighs 22 pounds and has brown eyes, brown hair and a scab on her chin.
In Grand Rapids Family Court this afternoon, a second child in the home of Consuela Martinez was taken into custody by Child Protective Services. The court said that since the conditions of Jozlynn's disappearance are unclear, this was a precaution.
Anyone with information on Martinez's location should call Grand Rapids Police at 911 or (616) 456-3604.
Martinez says she last saw her two year old daughter Jozlynn when she tucked her into bed Monday night at 11:00p.m., and told her, she loved her.
Malmberg often cares for Jozlynn and takes her places, so Martinez wasn't alarmed initially when the two were not in the apartment when she woke up at 9:00a.m. Tuesday.
"He left the house key and the doors downstairs unlocked," Martinez said.
Martinez waited several hours and then noticed her income tax return of $2800 was missing from her purse, so she called police.
"There is no past history of this," said Grand Rapids Police Sergeant Mark Mathis.
Sergeant Mathis arrived at Martinez' Northwest side home in the 900 block of Nagold Street Wednesday evening. Mathis, along with two other Grand Rapids Police investigators were re-checking the apartment and going over facts with Martinez when they were informed Malmberg was arrested in Lansing and en-route to Grand Rapids.
"We're still checking some other things to see if perhaps he dropped the child off or if the child is somewhere else," Sergeant Mathis said.
Martinez said she was felt some relief when police told her they found Malmberg, but that quickly changed when she was informed her daughter was not with him.
"He would normally never trust anyone with Jozlynn," said Martinez.
Martinez says Malmberg has history of drug abuse. Martinez says she filed a Personal Protection Order against Malmberg because he threatened to kill her while she was pregnant with her second child. Martinez says she later withdrew the order.
The night before Jozlynn was taken, Martinez says she briefly argued with Malmberg about money. Martinez says it makes sense if Malmberg stole her cash, but she doesn't now why he would take her daughter, and leave his biological 7 month old son.
"I know all his friends are from Big Rapids, Remus, but nobody in Lansing," said Martinez.
Martinez hopes Malmberg's arrest lead to her daughter's safe return.
"Anybody could have gotten to her and hurt her. I hope she knows that I love her," Martinez said.

Re: Jozlynn Mari Martinez Never Found -- Jeffrey Malmberg Convicted Of Second-Degree Murder
This is another mom who chose to keep her abusive drug addict BF in her home. Now she says she hopes that her two-year old missing daughter knows that she loves her.
Sure, but not enough to keep her safe in her own home.
This kind of situation keeps repeating all over the U.S. Mothers who endanger the lives of their childrens by associating with or living with scum.
The scum left their 7 month-old son, but the woman wonders why he didn't take his son rather than her daughter? Wake up, now you have no kids to worry about, since CPS took the baby away.
That was a big tax return, was the scum even employed or did this woman allow him to live off of her income, and possibly some welfare funds.

What a shame. I totally agree, Cali. This is repeated over and over and over again. These women choosing the POS BF's over their child's safety. Then keep having more babies.
It doesn't surprise me he took the money and ran. I'm sure her refund was generous because of the Earned Income Credit and claiming Head of Household, meaning single with dependents. When all along a grown man, most likely not working, living in the house. I'm not implying anything is wrong with the tax credits, it is a godsend to working single mothers. It's the worthless POS they support with tax payer's money.
But what's fishy is why take Jozlynn? What drug user would want to be saddled with a 2 yr old if you've got $2,800 cash to go party on? I would think they should be checking the dumpsters and landfill. This sadly sounds like a familiar story. He was running, IMO. I certainly hope it turns out differently and Jozlynn is found, it doesn't look good though. What a pretty little angel she is.

There have been commercials airing in my area, targeting young single mothers to "Choose Your Partner Carefully - Your Child's Life Depends On It". It is from Hamilton County Family Services. It could be a great tool, but unfortunately I don't know if the young mothers would listen. The POS boyfriends always seem to take precedence over the safety of their children. I was glad to see the commercials, you never know, even if only a few mothers take heed and listen. It could potentially save the life or prevent the abuse of more children.

As I was reading this story, I was thinking the same thing as the rest of you. ANOTHER mother put her child in danger by allowing her abusive BF to live in the same home with the child.
Do you suppose these mothers will EVER wise up? How many times does this have to happen before these mothers finally decide to put the children's safety FIRST.
I pray this scumbag hasn't harmed Jozlynn.

Piper, that is a very telling statistic that one-third of child abuse deaths since 2005 came at the hands of mom's boyfriend. I know those statistics are only from one county, but I wouldn't be surprised if the national average is close to that. These mothers have got to wake up and start putting their children first.
I pray for Jozlynn's safe return and I really hope that Malmbert didn't harm her or sell her to some freak.

These moms are so desperate for a guy to "take care of them" that they are willing to risk their children's lives. One would think that they'd be more careful in choosing boyfriends, especially with all the creeps out there. But, they seem to think that these guys are wonderful, regardless of their criminal records. Which all of them seem to have...
The commercial needs to be broadcast nationwide. Like you said, Piper, it doesn't mean they will listen, but even if it could help a few~
I am praying that this loser did not hurt Jozlynn.

Hamilton County is basically Cincinnati. The commercials are being broadcast in all of the surrounding areas in SW Ohio including Northern Kentucky and SE Indiana. I would love to see this broadcast nationwide. Maybe, just maybe...it would save another child.

I do hope the Choose Your Partners warning will go mationwide. Even if Uncle picks up the tab - but I would think it could be gently or not so gently "coaxed" into a lot of broadcast channels by calling it a PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT. Kudos for Hamilton County. I say start showing it in PE classes in Middle Schools too. Reach them before it starts..

How sad... what a beautiful child!
I agree these commercials should be in US and Canada...
I think lots of it is about breaking the cycle.. It seems like many of these women grow up in abusive homes, and then create one for their adult lives and prolly even more abusive than what they knew themselves... Sad!

Noooo, there's something wrong here. I'm not gonna say what I think just yet because I don't want to jump the gun but that interview really bothers me.
They should broadcast that message wherever there is a young girl and a tv. I agree with Cali, middle school is a good place to show it also. It has been 28 yrs since I was in middle school and there was a girl who got pregnant. IN THE SEVENTH GRADE!!!
AJ~I totally agree about the cycle. I broke the cycle in my family but my sisters couldn't and they have in fact treated their children worse than they were ever treated. It's sad.

I see a few alarming statements in this update. And they were fighting over money, which I assume was her tax return money. They had a custody hearing scheduled for yesterday in regards to the 7 month old.
Mom: 'I don't know if daughter is dead'
Jozlynn Mari Martinez has been missing for days

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The mother of Jozlynn Mari Martinez met with police twice Thursday to discuss her missing 2-year-old daughter.
At around 4:30 p.m., she and another family member left her home with two Grand Rapids officers for a second meeting -- her first was overnight. She was not in handcuffs. As of 8:45 p.m., she was still with police.
Consuela Martinez has not seen her daughter since 11 p.m. Monday. The 21-year-old Grand Rapids mother is desperate -- and looking for answers.
So are police. Just before 9 p.m., they returned to Martinez's home in a forensics van, equipped with evidence bags and cameras to photograph around the house.
They have talked to a suspect -- Martinez's boyfriend of 1.5 years, Jeffrey Malmberg, -- the family and Martinez. But there are no answers as to Jozlynn's whereabouts.
"I don't know if she's dead," Martinez said. "I don't know if she's just hurt a little bit."
Officers have spent an extended amount of time with Martinez.
She has not been arrested or threatened with arrest, she said.
Asked 24 Hour News 8: "Do you understand why police were so tough on you?"
Said Martinez: "They said because it was somebody close had gotten to her."
Police initially thought Jozlynn was with Malmberg. Martinez woke up Tuesday morning in the couple's home in the 900 block of Nagold Street NW to find her daughter and boyfriend gone. But Malmberg was located at around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday in the Lansing area. Police are in the process of re-tracing his steps.
He and Martinez have an infant son together, but Malmberg is not Jozlynn's father. A custody hearing for 7-month-old Brian was set for Thursday but has been rescheduled for March 11. Child Protective Services took the baby away from Martinez on Thursday morning.
Malmberg remains jailed Thursday and is set for arraignment on kidnapping charges Friday. He has denied any involvement in the case, said police, who are checking his alibis.
Martinez took out a personal protection order against Malmberg one year ago Saturday. He had threatened her, according to court records.
Malmberg later said to police he had never laid a hand on Martinez, but told an officer, "but that is going to change now."
Martinez dropped the PPO in August 2009. She said Malmberg had changed, gotten a job and was treating her and the children better.
Now, she regrets dropping the protection order.
"If I would have known this would happen, I wouldn't have," Martinez said. "I just -- I had no clue."
Neighbors in the area Thursday night were putting up signs with Jozlynn's photo in an attempt to find her.
"It's a little disgusting something like this could happen," said Bethany Hollinan, who was one of many canvassing the community and stapling posters on telephone poles. "I mean, it's your own kid -- you don't know where they are. If someone took (her), then it's frightening."

Watch the video in the above link, I can't get it posted. She says she doesn't want Jozlynn to have another broken bone.........the reporter asks what that meant. "Well, she had gotten a broken bone back in December". How do you "get" a broken bone?? She goes on to explain that Jozlynn fell off a chair, and kept complaining her leg hurt so she took her to the doctor a couple of weeks later and her leg was broken. SHE WASN'T HOME WHEN THIS HAPPENED, HE WAS WATCHING HER......she goes on to say it wasn't suspicious because it happened like he said. That poor baby, my God. This stupid ass mother. I am just furious.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Jozlynn Martinez died Monday night in her home and her body was disposed of in a trash receptacle, said Grand Rapids police chief Kevin Belk late Friday.
In a statement, Belk said Jeffrey Malmberg admitted to investigators the 2-year-old died in the home and he disposed of her body. Police have been searching the Kent County Waste-to-Energy facility.
Belk said the child's body has not been found, and would not say whether police believed the death was accidental or deliberate.
Jozlynn's mother, Consuela Martinez, still hopes the police and Malmberg are wrong about her daughter being dead.
"I know they are looking for her body. If they don't find it, I won't have closure, and my son won't have closure. We have no proof," Martinez said.
Malmberg was arraigned on kidnapping charges earlier Friday, and remains in jail on a $1 million bond.

Here's the full full text of Chief Belk's statment:
On Tuesday, February 23, 2010, the Grand Rapids Police Department was notified of a missing 2 year-old child from 915 Nagold St NW.
The mother of the child, Consuela Martinez, told police she last saw her child on Monday evening along with her live in boyfriend, Jeffery Malmberg, and a second child who is 7 months old.
Martinez said when she woke up at 9 am on Tuesday morning, Malmberg and her daughter, Jozlynn, were not at home. Also missing at the time was money from the home. Martinez first thought that Malmberg, who in the past has taken the child for a few hours in the morning, was running errands and would be returning. Martinez checked throughout the day with family and friends and was not able to locate Malmberg or Jozlynn.
On Wednesday afternoon, February 24, 2010, an Amber Alert was issued for both Jozylnn and Malmberg. The Kent County Prosecutors Office authorized an arrest warrant charging Malmberg with one count of kidnapping and one count of larceny.
As a result of the Amber Alert, a citizen contacted the Grand Rapids Police Department. Malmberg was located in the City of Lansing. He was returned to Grand Rapids and has spoken to investigators.
The suspect, Jeffery Malmberg, has told Grand Rapids Police Department and FBI investigators that Jozlynn Marie Martinez died on Monday evening at 915 Nagold NW and that he disposed of her body in a nearby trash receptacle.
Grand Rapids Police Department and FBI personnel, since last evening, have searched through over 200,000 pounds of trash at the Kent County Waste to Energy Facility on Market Street SW. The two-day search involved nearly 70 investigators. Despite our efforts, we have yet to find Jozlynn's body. Our search continues at this hour.

Poor little innocent child, born to a stupid self-centered mother. A mother who gave birth to two children and deserved none. A mother who placed greater value toward a male who shared her bed. A child, now dead, who should have have been a priceless gift.
Makes me sick, and just so damn sad....

Where was the mom at 9:15 when her baby was killed???? How did she not know? I havent heard talk of her being put to bed...
That sounds like the time where the child should have been being put to bed, or maybe fighting off sleep and not wanting to go to bed... I can only suspect he found away to make her stop crying...
What a poor excuse for a human being..

Oh, I am just sick to hear this confession about Jozlynn's death. She never had a chance in that environment and the mother knew he had hurt her before
So senseless and cruel. The pain and suffering these children go through is just unbearable. When will it ever stop?

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Grand Rapids police interviewed the mother of 2-year-old Jozlynn Martinez again Saturday night, as the investigation into what happened continues.
Police confirmed to 24 Hour News 8 that investigators were at the home of Consuela Martinez at 915 Nagold around 8 p.m. Saturday. Consuela Martinez's mother, Retha, confirmed they were interviewing her daughter. On Friday, Police Chief Kevin Belk said no charges were pending against Martinez.
Consuela Martinez's boyfriend, Jeffrey Malmberg is charged with kidnapping Jozlynn. According to police, he was also questioned again Saturday from the Kent County Jail, where he is being held on $1 million bond.
Jozlynn Martinez died Monday night in her home and her body was disposed of in a trash receptacle, said Grand Rapids police chief Kevin Belk late Friday.
Having no body, Jozlynn's grandmother, Retha says she's frustrated police decided to cancel the Ambert Alert.
"She could still be out there alive, somewhere, someplace," said Retha, who did not want her last name to be published.
The family is trying to get Jozlynn's pictured registered with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. They're making posters to put up around neighborhoods, and t-shirts to bring awareness to the little girl's disappearance.

Jozlynn Martinez's mother visits jail, says boyfriend refused to explain why he threw Grand Rapids girl's body in trash
By Kyla King The Grand Rapids Press
February 28, 2010, 6:30AM
Consuela Martinez went to the Kent County Jail on Saturday, looking for answers from her boyfriend — the man police say threw her 2-year-old daughter’s lifeless body into the trash.
She emerged from the jail visit 30 minutes later, crying and clearly frustrated by a fruitless meeting with Jeffrey Malmberg. He refused her pleas for new information about what had happened to Jozlynn Martinez, her brown-eyed daughter who had been missing since Tuesday morning.
“I can’t believe he would do something like this,” the sobbing 21-year-old said outside the jail’s visitor entrance. He told her nothing new, she said.
“It’s just everything he’s been saying.”
Grand Rapids police on Saturday continued to hunt for Jozlynn’s remains, sorting through refuse they removed from a disposal facility on Market Avenue SW and took to a separate, undisclosed location.
Police have said they are treating this as an homicide investigation, but would not comment on whether Malmberg has confessed to causing the child’s death, or said exactly how she died. He remains jailed on a kidnapping charge.
Police now believe Jozlynn died inside the Nagold Street NW home where her mother lived with Malmberg. On Friday, police revealed that Malmberg told them he removed the girl’s body, carried it several blocks and put it in a commercial Dumpster — all after his girlfriend had gone to bed late Monday night.
“We have now gone to the realization that more than likely she is deceased, and we’re trying to recover a body right now,” Lt. Ralph Mason said Saturday. Police were able to isolate trash from that particular Dumpster, but there is a chance her body already has been incinerated, he said.
Like her mother, the community is waiting for answers to the mystery, which came to public attention Wednesday, when police issued an Amber Alert for Jozlynn and said they were looking for Malmberg.
Malmberg, 40, was arrested Wednesday night in Lansing. The next day, he told police Jozlynn died inside the home Monday night, and he disposed of her body Tuesday before heading out of town.
Police will not give up the search for Jozlynn’s body, Mason said.
“This investigation is nowhere near complete,” Mason said. “Not only for the family’s sake, but the whole community that has been affected by this.”
The couple have a 7-month-old, Brian, who was taken into protective custody Thursday because of the circumstances surrounding his sister’s disappearance. He is expected to remain there until a March 11 hearing.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A man lodged at the Kent County jail in connection with 2-year-old Jozlynn Martinez's disappearance told the child's mother his version of what happened to the toddler.
Consuela Martinez, 21, sat down with boyfriend Jeffrey Malmberg on Saturday during his visitation hours to hear his side of the story.
Jozlynn fell down a set of stairs at the couple's Nagold Street home in Grand Rapids on Monday night and died, Malmberg told Martinez. He panicked and decided to dispose of the child's body in a nearby commercial Dumpster, he said.
"When he went in the bathroom, (Jozlynn) was sitting on the bed," Martinez said after talking to Malmberg. "When he got out of the bathroom, he heard a noise ... and went downstairs and found her laying there."
Malmberg said he was sorry, Martinez told 24 Hour News 8 on Sunday.
Jozlynn went missing Monday night, police said, and by Wednesday, an Amber Alert was issued. Friday evening, Grand Rapids police held a news conference and announced Malmberg told investigators the girl was dead.
Police won't comment on how Jozlynn died. Her body has not been found.

Isn't it convenient for a murderer to claim a child fell and accidentally died... and they just panicked and disposed of the body.
I wonder if anyone ever really believes that excuse. Because I, personally, don't buy it. Not unless they have something to hide to begin with. Otherwise, most normal people would report the "accident."

If a child under my watch fell down the stairs, I would panic and call 911. It seems like most of the time children survive falls down the stairs. It doesn't make sense that she was already dead by the time he got down the stairs, and it makes even less sense to throw her body in a dumpster if she died accidentally.

You are absolutley right J4A... Even if she was going to succumb to death by the fall, it seems unlikley that she wud already be dead ...
Knowing the monters excuse that she fell down the stairs, that should give us the indication that when she is found, her injuries will likley be from head to toe...
Pretty coincidental that he just happened to notice her being awake and sitting up when he went to the bathroom, then she fell down the stairs....
How many 2 yr olds, sit up in their bed, at bedtime and are just quietly sitting there?????

He's a liar. She didn't fall down the steps, that's the oldest story in the book. He had hurt her before, she had a broken bone, per the mother. If you're innocent, you're going to call 911. Plain and simple.

Re: Jozlynn Mari Martinez Never Found -- Jeffrey Malmberg Convicted Of Second-Degree Murder
I'll admit that I haven't watched the videos since I'm at work, but I have several issues with this MOTHER... She repeatedly refers to this baby as "it" - I'm sorry, I think at the very least, she knew beforehand that this baby was dead... She says at one point that she doesn't know if the child is dead, or maybe just hurt a little bit??? wth??? really??? is there a language barrier maybe that I'm not picking up on while reading her statements??? someone please tell me...
I was a single mom for several yrs - from the time my youngest child was just 2 months old until she was 4 - and I told my husband now - BEFORE i even started dating him seriously that my kids WOULD come first, because they were in my life before he was!! AND - I wouldn't allow him to meet my kids until i had been seeing him for about 6 months... call me stupid - but I found a man who cares more for my kids than their own father does. he loves them with his whole heart - WHY WHY WHY do mothers put their children at risk?? are they SO selfish that they are more concerned about their own desires that they don't care who has access to their children?? i say that my children are my MOST PRECIOUS asset - I protect them with my life - and I expect nothing less of my husband!! it was very important to me that i found out whether or not HE WAS WORTHY TO BE THEIR DADDY before he was husband material... Mothers have to understand that they aren't just looking for a mate!! they HAVE to be looking for a daddy first!!!
It just angers me - they DON'T have to put their children's lives at risk. I would have rather been a single mother FOREVER before burying one of my babies...

Very well said Tish. I admire you for putting your kids first. Many single moms would have trouble sticking to your 6 month rule if they really liked the guy. Many single moms that I've known in my life didn't even wait six months before allowing a guy to move in.

Tish-there was quite a few times during this Mom's interviews that I did this . I couldn't believe some of the stuff she was saying either. I think your 6 month rule was a great idea.
I think some of these moms are too willing to get free, and usually, live-in babysitting.

Re: Jozlynn Mari Martinez Never Found -- Jeffrey Malmberg Convicted Of Second-Degree Murder
Malmberg's father says his son is a habitual liar
March 01, 2010 5:43 PM
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – In Grand Rapids, the search continues for Jozlynn Martinez.
The two-year-old girl went missing from her home on Nagold Street on February 22nd.
Jeffrey Malmberg has been charged with kidnapping and larceny related to Jozlynn's disappearance. Police recently announced that Malmberg told them that Jozlynn died and he disposed of her body.
Jozlynn's mother, Consuela, told Newschannel 3 that in a phone call from prison, Malmberg told her that Jozlynn died after falling down the steps of their home on Monday night.
On Monday, Malmberg's father spoke to Newschannel 3 from his home in Florida.
In an interesting conversation, Bob Malmberg was very frank about his son, saying that he can be downright mean and can't be trusted.
“It bewilders me to no end that something like this would happen,” said Bob.
Bob Malmberg told Newschannel 3 that his son, Jeffrey, has significant attitude problems, going all the way back to his school days at Big Rapids High School. Bob said his son always wanted revenge, but Bob never dreamed his son would be involved in something like this.
“I am not too happy, no,” said Bob. “I never thought he would go to, get mixed up in whatever he's mixed up in there.”
Bob says he hasn't spoken to his son in more than two decades. The two were estranged after Bob turned his son in for stealing money at age 18. Bob said his son was a habitual liar as a young man, and that police are going to have to be very tough to get the truth out of him.
Newschannel 3 first reported over the weekend that Malmberg had told police and Jozlynn's mother that the girl fell down the steps inside the house on the west side of Grand Rapids, and that he dumped the body in a commercial dumpster a couple of blocks away. Her body has not been found.
Newschannel 3 also spoke to Jozlynn's biological father about the situation.
“It's just torture for us because we're getting no closer,' said Jozlynn's father John Rittenhouse.
Rittenhouse also told Newschannel 3 why he thinks Malmberg would have harmed the girl. The motive, he said, being that the family was giving little Jozlynn more attention than Malmberg's young son.
“To me that's a jealousy thing,” said Rittenhouse, “because he has to be the center of everything, and since things were going south, he figured maybe this is his way to get even.”
On Monday, Grand Rapids police told Newschannel 3 that Malmberg's story changes every time they interview him, making it very difficult to pin down what happened.
Malmberg's father told Newschannel 3 that he wants his son to simply be honest.
“If he actually harmed the little girl, yes, he's got to tell the truth and get it out,” said Bob Malmberg. “Take his punishment and let the world move on.”
It has certainly been a long week for Jozlynn's family, moving from uncertainty to heartbreak in a matter of five days.
The story began on February 22nd when Jozlynn's mother, Consuela, says she last saw her daughter. The next day, Consuela called police saying she couldn't find her boyfriend, Jeffrey Malmberg, or her daughter. She also reported that $2,800 had been stolen.
An Amber Alert for Jozlynn was issued Wednesday afternoon, and Malmberg was captured by police Wednesday night in a pool hall in Lansing.
On Thursday, police say Malmberg told them that Jozlynn had died in an accident at the home and that he had disposed of her body.
Malmberg was arraigned Friday afternoon in Grand Rapids, the same day Grand Rapids Police ended the Amber Alert and announced that Jozlynn had died.

Re: Jozlynn Mari Martinez Never Found -- Jeffrey Malmberg Convicted Of Second-Degree Murder
what also concerns me in this case is that this 21 (?) yr old was with a 40 yr old?? she was barely legal, he's twice her age!!! how long have they been together?
Good for his dad that he didn't cater to his son like the ants - he didn't enable him to continue living a life of - well, let's just call it what it is - it's sin - his dad did the right thing by turning in his son, even though in the long run it cost him his relationship with him. I'm sure at the time, he had had enough - it's got to be a very tough decision, and I don't envy him one bit - i hope I'm not ever faced with having to turn in my child, and IF i do have to make that decision one day, I hope I'm strong enough to make the right one. Too bad this guy didn't take his dad's advice way back when... he could have led a different life... what's the saying - you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink? that's about all we can do w/ teens right?? lol

I think you will make the right decision if it ever comes down to it Tish. You can only do your best and hope for the best. Two children can be raised the same exact way in the same household and turn out totally different.
I don't know what a 21-year-old woman would want with a 40-year-old homeless guy. It is even more disturbing that she took him back after things got bad enough for her to get a restraining order against him.

A Michigan statewide Amber Alert has been issued for 2-year-old Jozlynn Mari Martinez after she disappeared from her home on February 22, 2010 at 11:00 p.m. The Grand Rapids Police Department is handling the case and Jozlynn has been listed with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. (click here to see her poster)
Jozlynn’s mother, Consuela Martinez, 21, states that she last saw her child when she was in bed and that when she awoke at 9:00 a.m. on the morning of February 23, 2010, Jozlynn and her boyfriend, Jeffery Lynn Malmbert, age 40 had disappeared. Reports state that Consuela did not realize that the two were missing and at first thought he had taken the child out as he had previously done before.
Consuela Martinez says she became worried when she noticed the house key was still in the home and the downstairs door had been left unlocked. Several hours later she discovered that $2,800 was missing from her purse. It was then that she notified authorities.
On Wednesday night, Jeffrey Lynn Malmbert was arrested, but there is no sign of two-year-old Jozlynn.
Authorities have described Malmbert as cooperative yet the search continues for little Jozlynn. Jeffrey Malmbert denies involvement in her disappearance.
Jozlynn is described as having a scab on her chin and a spot on the right side of her head where her hair doesn’t grow. She walks with her feet turned inwards. And has brown hair and brown eyes. She weighs 22 pounds and stands 2’9” tall. If you have any information regarding the whereabouts of Jozlynn Martinez, please contact the Grand Rapids Police Department at 1-616-456-3604. You may also contact 911.
