ST. JOHNS (CBC) - The father of Mariam Makhniashvili, the missing Toronto teenager who disappeared last September, has been taken into custody following a stabbing at the family's apartment building Friday night.
Witnesses confirmed to CBC News that police led Vakhtang Makhniashvili away in handcuffs from the Bathurst Street and Eglinton Avenue building.
Shortly before 8 p.m., a 26-year-old man was stabbed in the stomach at the building. The man was taken to Sunnybrook hospital but his injuries are not considered life threatening.
Police would not confirm the identity of the suspect.
Mariam has not been seen since September. Her family said she left her home for Forest Hill Collegiate Institute, with her brother George, on the morning of Sept. 14 and disappeared. Her backpack was found Oct. 8 in a parking lot in midtown Toronto. The bag, which was open when police arrived, contained schoolbooks belonging to the 17-year-old.
Mariam and her brother had only been students at the Forest Hill high school since the new school year started in September. The pair lived in Tblisi, Georgia, before coming to Toronto in June. They reunited in Canada with their parents who had arrived from Los Angeles a few months earlier. Her parents said she had not made any friends in Toronto and that her disappearance was completely out of character for the girl, whom they described as quiet and shy.
