New Braunfels toddler still missing

The search for a New Braunfels toddler missing since Friday night transitioned from search and rescue to recovery, authorities said early Sunday.
After being missing for more than 36 hours, authorities said that weather conditions and the time that Joshua Davis Jr., 18 months old, has been missing forced them to alter their strategy and downgrade hopes the child could be found safe.

Sunday a.m.: 18-month-old child still missing; search now 'in recovery mode'

New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung - New Braunfels, TX

NEW BRAUNFELS — Searchers in southeast New Braunfels were unable to locate 18-month old Joshua Davis overnight — and police say they're transitioning from a search-and-rescue mission to a "recovery mode."

New Braunfels Police Department Lt. Michael Penshorn, during an 8 a.m. Sunday press briefing, said the decision was made to switch to recovery mode because of the length of time the boy has been missing and because of the freezing and near-freezing temperatures that have been experienced since the boy was last seen at his home in the 2600 block of Savannah Hill Circle on Friday evening.

Hopes dim for missing tot
Cadaver-search dogs are brought in by authorities.
By Guillermo X. Garcia

Published: 08:38 p.m., Sunday, February 6, 2011

Under clear, sunny skies, cadaver-search K-9 teams fanned out across a narrow area of rough terrain in south New Braunfels near the Guadalupe County line Sunday morning.
The sometimes frantic search-and-rescue operation for 18-month-old Joshua Davis Jr. had just transitioned into a recovery effort.
Meanwhile, a frustrated Sabrina Benitez cried for her child missing since Friday night, pleaded for his safe return and refused to give up hope even as she sought to alert authorities to a person she suspects of wrongdoing.
But while Benitez and her boyfriend believe someone may have taken their child for unknown reasons, authorities said nothing indicates foul play.

SAN ANTONIO -- On Sunday, a mother and father prepare to go to bed with their toddler missing for a third straight night.
It was an emotional day for the parents of Joshua Davis Jr. First, authorities reported that their missing son might be dead. Then rumors surfaced that claimed the boy was found. However, this news ended up being false.
“I went to sleep and all I could hear was my baby crying and calling for mommy,” Sabrina Benitez said.
Sabrina Benitez has not experienced a good night’s rest in days since the mysterious disappearance of her 18-month-old son Joshua Davis Jr.
Authorities believe the toddler wandered away from his Savannah Hill Circle home Friday night.
“I just want to know he’s okay and that he’s still alive,” Benitez said.
Sunday proved to be an emotional roller coaster ride for the family. After 36-hours that spanned two evenings of sub-freezing temperatures, New Braunfels Police transitioned their search and rescue operation to a recovery effort. They fear the child could not withstand such harsh elements.

NEW BRAUNFELS — The search for missing tot Joshua Davis Jr. intensified and shifted focus Tuesday from a recovery effort to a full-blown investigation.

It began at 2:30 p.m., as a Department of Public Safety helicopter began hovering behind the house, in a mobile home community on the town's far south side.

~Snipped~

At the same time, a white truck pulled up in the driveway of the home where the 18-month-old boy disappeared Friday night.

Plainclothes investigators got out, went to the backyard and returned a few minutes later carrying a large item or items wrapped in black plastic. After loading the bundle into the back of the truck, they drove off.

The helicopter made a few larger circles around the neighborhood before leaving.

“Although we are still searching, we are shifting more toward an investigation,” said Lt. Michael Penshorn of the New Braunfels Police Department. “We'll still search, but we're going to focus more on other areas of interest.”

Those areas included forensic evidence as well as statements from the family and friends, Police Chief Thomas Wibert said.

“It's a process of elimination,” he said. “If you're looking in every place you can look, and you find nothing, then it has to be something else.”

Police spoke to the child's pediatrician Tuesday, Penshorn said, and concluded that the child's survivability window in last weekend's subfreezing weather was only 24 hours. Armed with that information and the failure of numerous searches to find the boy, authorities now deem it less likely that he wandered off and died in the elements.

NEW BRAUNFELS — Stymied in their search for missing tot Joshua Davis Jr., police are letting state and federal investigators take a second look at the case.

More than two dozen federal agents and a contingent of Texas Rangers are now part of the investigation, said Lt. Michael Penshorn of the New Braunfels Police Department.

An FBI forensics team visited the family's home, in a mobile home community on the town's far South Side, to retrace the steps and evidence-gathering of the first responders, who showed up minutes after the boy vanished Friday night.

I don't see anything bad in these parents' eyes. The children in the photos don't seem to have that haunted look either. I tend to believe he either wandered off or someone who knows them came in and took him.

I am leaning towards wandering off. He's just a toddler and he has asthma. If he went out the door, he easily could have disappeared quickly, and possible fallen in a hole somewhere. That could trigger an asthma attack, or he could have hit his head, even. Many places have abandoned wells that are not covered all that good. As sad as that would be, it would be easier than thinking someone intentionally harmed him.

“It’s been a stressful roller-coaster ride, just wondering how it could happen," said the boy's father, Joshua Davis Sr.

The little boy's disappearance has puzzled law enforcement for almost a week and has kept his family on a mission.

Police say the boy, who vanished from a mobile home crowded with adults on Feb. 4, didn't wander off. Tracking dogs haven't been able to pick up his scent, and exhaustive searches of a two-mile area around the boy's home have turned up no signs.
Police and abduction experts also have ruled out the possibility of a kidnapping.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Unless they are insinuating that someone within the home murdered this baby, what other possibility would there be if not a kidnapping?

It does sound like that is what they are suggesting.

Police: Someone is not telling all about missing boy

Seguin Gazette Enterprise - Seguin, Tx

NEW BRAUNFELS - The search for Joshua J. Davis has taken investigators across state lines, seeking information.

And authorities believe that someone, somewhere, knows more than they're telling about the toddler's Feb. 4 disappearance.

Lt. John McDonald of the New Braunfels Police Department criminal investigation division said FBI investigators have been talking to individuals far away from the Savannah Hill Circle neighborhood where 18-month-old Joshua vanished into thin air three weeks ago.

McDonald said the FBI has talked to individuals out of state who might have knowledge about the personalities of individuals connected to the case in some way.

Missing Toddler Update: Police Say Someone Knows What Happened

KGNB-AM
New Braunfels, Tx

February 24, 2011

(New Braunfels, TX) -- The search continues for 18-month old Joshua Davis Jr. Officers continue to look into every lead that is called or emailed in, no matter how small. Lt. John McDonald, one of the lead investigators on this case, says most of those leads have been very consistent, coming from a variety of sources, all in the same relative area, near the boy's home on Savannah Hill Circle, east of I-35.

I posted a comment on KGNB, a radio station in New Braunfels, Tx, last night, 2-25-11. Their staff reviews and approves comments. No nics are used. Just your subject. I have posted a previous comment on one of the other articles and I am using, "Where's Joshua?"

Under the article, the most recent comments are first.

My comment has been approved and posted:

Where's Joshua?

Submitted by Visitor on February 25, 2011 - 10:30pm.

Thank you, KGNB, for the update!

As this case unfolded, Law Enforcement (LE) were seen, via media, removing things from the yard and perhaps the home. Pictures by media show things wrapped or put in black plastic bags.

Hopefully, some of those things are being tested for whatever LE deems appropriate.

If the parents have cell phones, I wonder if LE were able to get possible info from the cell phones. Prior to Joshua being reported missing, I would think cell phone info would be important, i.e., flurry of phone calls.

I wonder if the parents were where they said they were. If they were away from the home and using the cell phone but told LE they were at home, cell phone pings will determine their location.

Also, if the parents have a computer, I wonder if LE have confiscated it via an Affidavit. If so, maybe a computer forensic search of the computer would provide some clues for LE. A search of the hard disk drive (HDD) would provide everything that is on the computer even though someone may have deleted pertinent information. Lately, there have have numerous cases that have provided LE with valuable information from a suspect's (or a person of interest) computer.

It seems that the dogs lost the scent of Joshua at the home. I wonder if LE have used Luminol in the home.

Has the mother agreed to take a polygraph? Although not admissible in a court of law, a poly will indicate deception and can be used as a tool by LE in clearing the parents or the last
person(s) who saw Joshua. Has the father been cleared by LE?

Something does not add up. How does an 18 month old toddler vanish with so many people in a small home? Something is very hinky here.

Local LE, the Texas Rangers and the FBI have done an outstanding job in their search and investigation of this case. I agree with Lt. McDonald. Someone out there knows what happened to Joshua Davis. They need to come forward so Joshua can be brought home and this case can come to a conclusion.

Local LE are fortunate to have the assistance of the Texas Rangers and the FBI. With all working as a team, hopefully this case will be solved and the appropriate person(s) will be held accountable in the "disappearance" of Joshua Davis!

Special thanks to all Law Enforcement involved in this case. I hope you get a break in this case soon.

Once again, thank you KGNB, for your coverage of the Joshua Davis case!

Search for Missing New Braunfels Toddler Hits 1-Month Mark Today

KGNB - AM
New Braunfels, TX

March 4, 2011

(New Braunfels, TX) -- The search for Joshua Davis Junior reaches the 1-month mark today, with still no sign of the missing toddler. KGNB spoke with New Braunfels Police Lt. Mike Penshorn about how the search has changed from when it began a month ago, and he says, obviously, the scope oftheir search has narrowed from a full-blown rescue mission (with searchers in fields surrounding the boy's home on Savannah Hill Circle) to a more forensics-based investigation.

FBI/Crimestoppers Increase Reward in Joshua Davis Jr. Case to $20K

KGNB - New Braunfels, Tx

March 16, 2011

(New Braunfels, TX) -- The reward for information in the Joshua Davis Jr. missing person case is now set at 20-thousand dollars. The FBI announced yesterday that they would be offering up to a 10-thousand dollar reward for information that led to the whereabouts of the New Braunfels toddler who has been missing nearly 6 weeks, since Feb. 4th. This is the first reward offer that the FBI has put out in this case, so in response, the New Braunfels/Comal County Crimestoppers board met yesterday afternoon and voted to parallel the FBI’s offer, taking their original 5-thousand dollar reward offer and making it a reward of up to 10-thousand dollars for information in the Joshua Davis Jr. case.

Where's Joshua?

Submitted by Visitor on March 17, 2011 - 1:19am.

The reward money has been increased significantly . . . from $5,000 to a total of $20,000.

I hope it will be an incentive for someone who knows what happened to Joshua to come forward and provide Law Enforcement (LE) with a lead that could break this case.

It still amazes me that there were so many people in the home and no one can say what happened to Joshua. Who had the responsibility to watch Joshua? After all, he was only an 18 month old toddler.

Who was the last person to see Joshua?

Also, the media reported that the mother could not take a polygraph because she was pregnant. She had her baby. Has she taken a polygraph? Have the folks in the home, at the time Joshua went missing, been polygraphed?

KGNB, do you know if LE are going to release the 911 call (tape) that the family made to report Joshua missing?

I hope that LE can get the lead that will assist them in solving this case. Joshua needs to be brought home one way or the other and the appropriate person(s) held accountable.

KGNB, thank you for your continued coverage of the Joshua Davis case!

Hi, FystyAngel!

I agree with you. It was about 8:30 p.m. and freezing. There was ice on the steps (per the mom). The mom said Joshua could not open the door himself.

They had company and supposedly there were 7 adults and 2 children in the home. It is a small mobile home and not a huge mansion where a child could get lost.

Who was watching Joshua, an 18 month old toddler? With that many people in a small home, I would think some one was watching him!

Something is very hinky with Joshua's "disappearance."

Piper, it is puzzling! Some one in the home that night knows exactly what happened to Joshua. Maybe they all do!
