Remembering Lisa
May 16, 2010
By JANET LUNDQUIST
PLAINFIELD -- Thirty-seven purple balloons blew in the wind Saturday evening, along with four white ones.
The purple balloons represented the years Lisa Ruttenberg Stebic was around to celebrate her birthday -- the four were for the birthdays she has been missing.
"(Lisa) laughed loud. She was fun," said Melanie Greenberg, Lisa's cousin and a family spokeswoman. "She loved every celebration."
Vigil for Lisa
Lisa would have turned 41 on Wednesday, May 19. On Saturday night, her friends, family and those who support them gathered at a park near her house to remember her through prayers, birthday wishes and a candlelight vigil.
Laurie Long, of Naperville attended the vigil, having met Lisa's family and friends during searches for Lisa after her 2007 disappearance.
"We still want her found. We still want justice for her," Long said.
A picnic table was set up with photos of Lisa, flowers and a birthday cake with "We love you Lisa" written on it in purple icing.
"I think it would mean a lot to her if we could find where her remains are and bring the person responsible to justice," said Betty Stubner, who worked with Lisa in the cafeteria at Lincoln Elementary School in Plainfield.
Seeing the gathering in her honor "would warm her. It would warm her heart," Stubner said. She said thinks about Lisa often, as well as Lisa's children, now ages 13 and 15, and how they need their mother.
Missing mom
Lisa, 37, was reported missing the morning of May 1, 2007. She was last seen at her Plainfield home the evening before.
Her husband, Craig Stebic, who has been named a "person of interest" in her disappearance by Plainfield police, has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing in connection with Lisa's disappearance. He has not been charged in connection with the case.
Craig was home Saturday during the vigil, but declined to comment.
Lisa was last seen about 6 p.m. April 30, 2007. Craig has said he was working in the backyard when he thought he heard Lisa leave for a nightly workout.
But Lisa's car was still parked in the driveway. Her purse and cell phone were also gone. Police say there has been no activity on her cell phone or credit cards since.
Investigation
On April 30, the third anniversary of Lisa's disappearance, authorities announced the Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force would review and reinvestigate the case.
The task force, which began operation in May 2009, includes more than 50 officers from 36 law enforcement agencies, the FBI and state police.
Will County State's Attorney Jim Glasgow said he and a team of investigators will conduct a "full-blown homicide investigation."
"It was encouraging," Greenberg said, adding that Lisa's family is simultaneously frustrated that there has been no resolution to the case after three years.
"The person who did this to her wanted to erase her," Greenberg said. "All these people here say no, she will not be erased. She will not be forgotten."
Greenberg said her family will keep a close eye on the upcoming murder trial of Drew Peterson, mainly to see what hearsay the judge allows into evidence.
"(Glasgow) has told me, he told the family, that (the hearsay law) could definitely apply in this case as well," Greenberg said.
There is still more than $75,000 in a reward account for any information leading to Lisa's whereabouts. If the reward is never claimed, the money will be transferred to a college fund for the Stebic children.
Anyone with information on Lisa Ruttenberg Stebic's location is asked to call the Plainfield Police Department at 815-267-7217 or Will County Crime Stoppers at 800-323-6734. For more information, visit www.findlisastebic.com .

What a nice way to recognize Lisa's birthday. It's another one of those "into thin air" with the husband being the last to see her. It sounds as if he was home during the vigil, but did not attend?

A low-key anniversary of Lisa Stebic's disappearance
By Michelle Manchir Tribune reporter
5:35 p.m. CDT, April 29, 2011
Four of Lisa Stebic’s closest friends brought daises and tied a butterfly-shaped balloon to a gazebo adjacent to the missing woman's Plainfield home Friday. Both the flowers and balloon were purple, Stebic's favorite color.
“We’re just doing it so other people would remember,” said Stebic’s neighbor and friend, Laurrie Bingenheimer. “There’s no place to go visit her, like a cemetery where you could go and remember. We have no place.”
The small-scale gesture comes four years after Stebic’s April 30, 2007 disappearance from her home on Red Star Drive. This is the first year since her disappearance that Stebic’s family hasn’t organized a public vigil or ceremony in her honor.
With no news from law enforcement or suspects, friends and family have reigned in some of their search efforts. Most have abandoned the idea that she’ll turn up alive.

Glasgow: Stebic case ‘on the front burner’
By Janet Lundquist
September 8, 2012 2:56AM
Five years ago, two women from Will County were reported missing within six months of each other.
Lisa Stebic, of Plainfield, vanished first, in April 2007. Stacy Peterson, of Bolingbrook, disappeared in October 2007.
On Thursday, Stacy’s husband, Drew Peterson, learned he’s headed to prison for killing his third wife, Kathleen Savio.
Will County State’s Attorney Jim Glasgow said Friday he’s not only pondering charges in Stacy’s disappearance, but is also putting the Stebic case “on the front burner.” Glasgow said investigators have “significant evidence” in the Stebic case, and that as soon as the Christopher Vaughn trial ends, his top prosecutors will review it all.
“With the evidence that we would have, you can prosecute a murder case without a body,” Glasgow said Friday. “It’s more difficult, but the longer the person is missing with absolutely no contact, the stronger the case becomes that they’re deceased.”

Is Lisa Next? Family Hopeful After Peterson, Vaughn Convictions
The family of Lisa Stebic is optimistic after State’s Attorney James Glasgow’s statements about possible prosecution.
By Shannon Antinor | September 24, 2012

After scoring victories in two of Will County’s high-profile murder cases, State’s Attorney James Glasgow said his prosecutors will turn their attention to another local tragedy: The disappearance of Plainfield mom Lisa Stebic.
This month, former Bolingbrook Police Sgt. Drew Peterson was found guilty of murdering third wife Kathleen Savio; fourth wife Stacy remains missing.
On Thursday, a jury took less than an hour to issue another guilty verdict in the trial of Christopher Vaughn, accused in the shooting deaths of his wife and three children.
With those cases over, Glasgow, who is seeking reelection in November, has vowed to put the Stebic case “on the front burner,” alluding to the possibility of filing charges in both Lisa’s case and the disappearance of Stacy Peterson.

Stebic case still troubles Plainfield police
By Janet Lundquist jlundquist@stmedianetwork.com November 1, 2013 9:38PM
The victim remains missing, the prime suspect still isn’t talking and the tips have run dry.
For more than six years, Plainfield police have been trying to solve the disappearance of Lisa Stebic, a 37-year-old mother of two who was last seen about 6 p.m. April 30, 2007 at her home in the 13200 block of Red Star Drive.
She and her husband, Craig, who eloped and were married in April 1993 in Jamaica, were divorcing while living under the same roof.
But police say Stebic’s disappearance is not a cold case. Her husband remains the sole suspect.
~Snipped~
Anyone with information on Lisa’s location or disappearance is asked to call Plainfield police at (815) 267-7217 or Will County Crime Stoppers at 800-323-6734.

Illinois Mother Still Missing

Lisa Stebic
Lisa Stebic is a mom, a daughter and a sister and it's been a long six years since she was last seen. Lisa vanished without a trace on April 30, 2007 from her house in Plainfield, Illinois, a home she shared with her estranged husband. I remember covering Lisa's case nationally when it happened, and I also remember the media attention dying off. Lisa's case sprang back into the spotlight in the fall 2007, because not far from where she went missing, another Illinois mother vanished -- Stacy Peterson. Stacy was Drew Peterson’s fourth wife, and she has never been found. In 2012, Drew Peterson was found guilty of murdering his third wife Kathleen Savio. Police do not believe the cases are connected.
~Snipped~
These are five things you need to know about this case:
1) Lisa Stebic, 37, was a local elementary school cafeteria worker. Lisa was reported missing by a neighbor and she left behind many personal items including her own vehicle. She was last seen on April 30, 2007 around 6 P.M.
2) Lisa was sharing the house with her estranged husband, Craig. They were going through a divorce. Her children who were only 10 and 12 at the time, and left the house the evening she went missing to get candy. Craig told investigators, he thought his wife was heading out for her evening workout...but she never came back. Police named Craig Stebic as a person of interest, but it is important to note, he has never been charged with a crime.
3) This case has gone before a Will County grand jury, but Grand Juries are secret and we do not know the outcome of anything that may have been discussed behind closed doors. Reports indicate many family members, friends and acquaintances were called in. Their testimony is on record in case anything happens in the future with this case.
4) On the day Lisa went missing, she left her job at the school around 2:30 P.M. and ran some errands. All of her co-workers said she had been in a great mood and there was nothing odd about her at work that day.
5) A search warrant allowed investigators to seize vehicles from the Stebic home; those vehicles were carefully examined. The day Lisa vanished was the same day she was trying to get her husband removed from the house. She had recently mailed a petition to her attorney attempt to get him off the property they shared.
