Prosecutors: 2-year-old was 'tortured' daily

BATAVIA - A pregnant Clermont County woman intends to plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence in the death of her 2-year-old son, who was "tortured" on a daily basis, prosecutors said Thursday.
A charge of child endangering is to be dropped against Krystle M. Hoskins, 24, in exchange for her plea in the death of Jerry Wells Jr., said Daniel "Woody" Breyer, chief deputy prosecutor.
She could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison if Judge William Walker accepts the guilty plea Sept. 28 in Common Pleas Court. She could have faced up to five more years in prison if the child endangering charge hadn't been dropped.
Jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail, Krystle Hoskins isn't expected to testify against her husband, Breyer said.
Timothy W. Hoskins, 42, who allegedly asphyxiated his stepson - perhaps by strangling him - faces a charge of murder. A five-day jury trial is to begin Sept. 27 before Judge Ken Zuk.
The boy, who was nearly 3, was the victim of "torturing, hitting, punching (and) kicking on a daily basis," Assistant Prosecutor Scott O'Reilly told the judge Thursday.
Zuk heard arguments by Assistant Public Defenders Cathy Adams and Daniel B. Startsman to restrict some of the witness testimony and evidence of prior abuse that the prosecution hopes to present in the case against Timothy Hoskins. The judge said he could rule on the motions as early as Friday.
Assistant Prosecutor Scott O'Reilly told the judge it would be necessary for jurors to see "graphic and gruesome" photos taken the day of Jerry's death and during an autopsy, which show more than 60 bruises to the boy's body. He suffered injuries to his head, torso, limbs, penis, anus and eyes, as well as tears to his heart and liver.

Bethel man faces life for killing 2-year-old
By Sheila McLaughlin and Janice Morse • smclaughlin@enquirer.com | jmorse@enquirer.com • September 23, 2010
BATAVIA - A Bethel man accused with torturing and killing his 2-year-old stepson faces 15 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to murder just days before his trial was set to begin in Clermont County.
In exchange for Timothy W. Hoskins' plea, all other charges - five counts of child endangering and a single count of tampering with evidence - are being dropped, according to court documents.
The written plea was filed Wednesday.
Hoskins would have faced a life sentence with parole eligibility after 20 or 25 years if he had gone to trial and found guilty as charged. Now that eligibility will come sooner.
The 42-year-old ex-con will appear before Clermont County Common Pleas Judge Kenneth Zuk for sentencing on Oct. 8.

Piper, it's so sad for this child. THIS is NOT justice, IMO. The mother KNEW what was happening & even covered it up for her man. How sick. It just makes me want to cry.

BATAVIA, Ohio -- A Clermont County woman being sentenced for her involvement in her son's death didn't get any support from her own mother.
Kay Weihe asked the judge to give her daughter, Krystle Hoskins, the maximum possible sentence for involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence.
~Snipped~
In explaining his sentencing decision, Judge William Walker told Hoskins, "I'm not certain if you're even capable of emotion," saying she had shown no signs of remorse.
Hoskins was sentenced to 15 years in prison, the maximum possible sentence.

Her husband, Timothy W. Hoskins, 42, who pleaded guilty to the June 1 murder of his stepson, was sentenced in October to life in prison. And he will be eligible for parole in 15 years. The mother is pregnant. She stood by while the stepfather tortured this child on a daily basis.
Rest in peace little Jerry
