Magnitude-6.5 quake off Japan; small tsunami alert

NEW YORK (AP) — A magnitude-6.5 earthquake shook eastern Japan off the quake-ravaged coast on Monday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, prompting Japan to issue a tsunami alert.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, but the Japan Meteorological Agency announced that a tsunami of up to 1.6 feet (a half meter) may wash into Miyagi Prefecture.

Low levels of radiation found in U.S. milk

WASHINGTON — The Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration say that very low levels of radiation have turned up in a sample of milk from the West Coast state of Washington.

The FDA said such findings are to be expected in the coming days because of the nuclear crisis in Japan, and the levels are expected to drop relatively. (Iodine-131 has a very short half-life — only about eight days.)

Results from a March 25 milk sample taken from Spokane, Wash., show levels of radioactive Iodine-131 that are still 5,000 times below levels of concern set by the FDA, including levels set for infants and children.

Engineers mixed nearly 20 pounds of a chemical absorbent, 130 pounds of sawdust and three garbage bags of shredded newspapers into pipes leading to a pit connected to the Unit 2 reactor, NISA stated.

The absorbent — like those used to soak liquid in diapers — can expand to 50 times its normal size when combined with water.

Engineers were stirring the mix in an attempt to get it to expand. They expected to know by Monday morning if it would work.

Earlier, a concrete patchfailed to stop the tainted water spewing from a crack in the pit.

Japan’s coast guard rescues dog from floating roof

KESENNUMA, Japan — Japan’s coast guard has rescued a dog drifting on a rooftop off the country’s coast, three weeks after a tsunami ravaged the northeast.

It was unclear how long the dog had been at sea when a helicopter crew spotted it Friday more than a mile off the town of Kesennuma.

TOKYO — Engineers have stopped highly radioactive water leaking into the sea from a crippled Japanese nuclear power plant, the facility's operator said on Wednesday, a breakthrough in the battle to contain the worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl.

However, Tokyo Electric Power Co. still needs to pump low-level contaminated water into the sea because of a lack of storage space at the facility.

"The leaks were slowed yesterday after we injected a mixture of liquid glass and a hardening agent and it has now stopped," a TEPCO spokesman told Reuters.

I don't know if I believe "the leaks have now stopped"...there's so much damage I don't think they really know yet, JMO. This has been a horrible tragedy and will be felt for years to come.

LOS ANGELES — Across the vast Pacific, the mighty bluefin tuna carried radioactive contamination that leaked from Japan's crippled nuclear plant to the shores of the United States 6,000 miles away — the first time a huge migrating fish has been shown to carry radioactivity such a distance.

"We were frankly kind of startled," said Nicholas Fisher, one of the researchers reporting the findings online Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
