Casey Trial: Experts On Air Samples, Geology, Toxicology

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Casey Anthony's defense team called a forensic geologist and a forensic toxicologist from the FBI as its first witnesses on Wednesday in her murder trial.

Casey is accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Marie Anthony. Wednesday marks day 36, including jury selection, of her trial.

Defense Calls Forensic Experts On Short Day

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Chemical testing of air samples from the trunk of Casey Anthony's car primarily showed the presence of gasoline, jurors heard in a shortened day of testimony Wednesday.

Other compounds, including chloroform, were also found, but the amount did not appear to be large, University of Central Florida chemist Michael Sigman told jurors. Testing was not done to determine the amounts, Sigman said, but "they gave very low responses in the instrument."

While some of the compounds found are associated with human decomposition, Sigman told defense attorney Cheney Mason, he cannot definitively say that their presence indicated a decomposing body was in the trunk, because there are other natural sources for those compounds as well.

I've been missing everyone soooo much!

I caught a glimpse of the trial on In Session this morning. OMG, I can't believe all of the commercials. No way I could watch that all day. I've missed watching with my buddies and chatting!!

I saw Jeff Ashton bust the guy about the trunk liner being out of the car for four days before he took his miniature air specimen. I screamed "Get 'em Jeff!" and scared my mom and made her jump. She said "Who are you mad at?" LOL.

I need to catch up, I heard Bozo is in deep doo doo.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A woman who said she had an affair with George Anthony after growing close to him during the search for his missing granddaughter has been subpoenaed to testify in his daughter’s murder trial.

Krystal Holloway received a subpoena to testify for the defense at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. That does not mean she will be called on Tuesday.

In an interview with Local 6 reporter Tony Pipitone, Holloway said she is upset the defense used her as a "scapegoat” in its opening statements.

Twin Sisters Claiming Affair Have Arrest Records

ORLANDO, Fla. -- There is more information being learned about the backgrounds of the two sisters who have spoken to the tabloid media to claim one had an affair with George Anthony, the father of Casey Anthony, who is charged in the killing of her daughter Caylee.

The two have been using the names River and Skye, and they have talked to the likes of the National Enquirer. They are twins who also have been arrested a number of times.

Cecelia Holloway is also known by another name to publicize her sister's supposed affair with George Anthony: Skye Benhaida. She claims to be the sister of River Cruz, who is also known as Cecelia's 38-year-old twin sister Krystal Holloway.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Orlando attorney Mark Lippman issued a statement on Wednesday reaffirming that George Anthony never had an affair with a woman named Krystal Holloway.

Lippman said he issued the statement in response to inquiries created by potential testimony on Wednesday in the trial against Casey Anthony, George's daughter, charged with first-degree murder in the death of her young daughter, Caylee.

Ineffective Counsel?

Dear Judge Eaton: Legal analysts are saying that since Jose Baez did not investigate the computer searches for the relevant dates in June 2008 that Casey now can get an appeal on ineffective counsel. Do you think it could happen? -- Susan, Virginia Beach, Va.

A lot of things can happen before the issue of ineffective assistance of counsel comes up. If the jury finds Casey not guilty, there will never be such an issue. If she is convicted and an appellate court orders a new trial, the issue will never come up. If she is convicted and loses her appeal, the issue can come up on a proceeding called post-conviction relief. In order to prove ineffective assistance of counsel, the petitioner must show deficient performance and prejudice. The second part is usually the hardest part to prove. For instance, if other evidence points toward the same facts as the information contained on the hard drive, the evidence is cumulative and there is no prejudice. It is too early to predict the outcome of an ineffective assistance of counsel claim. -- Judge O.H. Eaton
