A candlelight gathering in support of Carnel Chamberlain is set for 9 p.m. Thursday at the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Operations Center on East Broadway Road in Chippewa Township.

Everyone is welcome to attend and each person will be given a candle to show support of 4-year-old Carnel, who has been missing for a week from his family’s home on Tomah Road.

Luminaries will be placed around the Tribal Operations parking lot to symbolize casting light on the path home.

Sky lanterns will be released after a prayer to symbolize the prayers being send for Carnel.

Meanwhile, investigators from numerous agencies hare still searching for Carnel, who was last seen at about 9:30 p.m. by his mother’s boyfriend, Anthony M. Bennett.

On Thursday, June 21, Jaimee Chamberlain received a phone call every parent dreads. Her 4-year-old son, Carnel, was missing; he was being cared for by her boyfriend at her home near Mount Pleasant, Michigan. According to police, the mother’s boyfriend, Anthony Michael Bennett, who has not been named a suspect, last saw the 4-year-old boy when he was playing in the backyard pool. Tribal police, along with the FBI & several other agencies have been searching lagoons, ponds, & dense wooded areas near the missing 4-year-old boy’s home but have yet to turn up any clues on the boy’s whereabouts.

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI — Since 4-year-old Carnel Chamberlain was reported missing from his home six days ago, volunteers have stepped up in great numbers and police agencies from the region have come to join in the search.

Despite the passing days, Carnel's family is not giving up home that he will come home alive.

A Facebook page dedicated to the effort to locate the missing boy went live Monday night to share news coverage and offer a place to share support with his family.

It helps with getting the information out," said Carnel's aunt, Cheryl Chamberlain.

The family of missing 4-year-old child Carnel Chamberlain has appointed Kevin Chamberlain as the family spokeperson. Chamberlain is the cousin of Carnel’s mother, Jaimee Chamberlain, a former Saginaw Chippewa Tribal chief, and a well-known musician.

Kevin describes Carnel as a very intelligent child. “He’s on the quiet side, not the bouncing-off-the-walls kid. He keeps to himself and is not a wanderer. He’s not the kind of kid that was easily pulled away by external stimuli.”

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI — The mother of 4-year-old Carnel Chamberlain, who has been missing since Thursday, said that she has taken two polygraph tests and passed both.

Jaimee Chamberlain, 21, reported her son missing at 10:12 p.m. Thursday. He is registered with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

As of Tuesday, The Michigan state Police had not deemed the case appropriate for an Amber Alert, according to the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police.

Last Man to See Carnel Chamberlain Lawyered Up, Won’t Talk

The last man known to have see 4-year-old Carnel Chamberlain before he was reported missing Thursday has lawyered-up and won't talk to authorities, according to local news reports.

It's been five days since Carnel disappeared from his home on the Saginaw-Chippewa Indian Reservation, and an intense search to find him is continuing, WNEM reports. The search is concentrated in a 10-mile radius around the little boy's home.

Tribal police investigation the Carnel's disappearance say his disappearance is suspicious, the Huffington Post reported Monday. Carnel's mother, Jaimee Chamberlain, was at work when the boy vanished and learned he was gone from her boyfriend when she returned home.

The boyfriend, who was allegedly watching Carnel while his mother worked, has not been publicly identified by authorities. Missing Persons of America identified the boyfriend as Anthony Bennett by referencing Jaimee Chamberlain's Facebook.

ISABELLA INDIAN RESERVATION – The search for Saginaw Chippewa Carnel Chamberlain continued on Monday on the Isabella Indian Reservation in mid-Michigan. The four year boy has been missing since last Thursday night.

UPDATE: Search for missing Mount Pleasant boy now a criminal investigation

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI — The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe said Tuesday that the search for Carnel Chamberlain, who has been missing since Thursday, is now a criminal investigation.

Authorities have been searching the Isabella Federal Reservation for 4-year-old Carnel Chamberlain for five days.

On Tuesday, police began searching a wooded area near a wastewater treatment plant.

They said the search is now being conducted as a criminal investigation into the boy’s disappearance.

Tribal spokesman Frank Cloutier told The Morning Sun that Bennett was playing a “cat-and-mouse” game with authorities.

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI — The Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police have executed a search warrant to gather information in the case of Carnel Chamberlain, a 4-year-old boy who has been missing since Thursday night.

Adults in the life of missing 4-year-old Carnel Chamberlain – including his mother’s boyfriend, who has been termed a “person of interest” in his disappearance – have had several legal skirmishes and his biological father is imprisoned for felonious assault.

Carnel was born in January 2008 to a teenage mother with substance abuse problems and Michigan officials placed him in foster care and attempted to remove parental custody.

His mother’s boyfriend, Anthony Michael Bennett, 20, whom police have termed a “person of interest” in Carnel’s disappearance, was released unsatisfactorily from state probation a year ago.

Bennett, whom police initially said was uncooperative and have since described as having “calmed down” a bit, was under state probation for fleeing a traffic stop while drinking and driving near the Bradley Trailer Park two years ago.

ISABELLA INDIAN RESERVATION – The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan will hold a candlelight vigil in the parking lot of Tribal Operations tonight to bring together the community to pray for the return of four year old, Carnel Chamberlain, who has now been missing for seven days.

The candlelight vigil will take place one week to the hour after Carnel was first discovered missing about 9:30 pm last Thursday night from his home on the Isabella Indian Reservation. He was reported missing at 10:12 pm last Thursday night by his mother, Jaimee Chamberlain, who returned home from work and discovered Carnel was missing. Carnel was in the care of Chamberlain's then boyfriend, Anthony M. Bennett.

The candlelight vigil, called "Giiwe' aanzhechigedaa" - "Let's Cast the Light Toward Home" begins at 9:00 pm, edt. The Tribal Operations are at 7070 East Broadway, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. It is open to the public. Candles will be provided.

Carnel was reported missing on the Isabella Federal Reservation by his mother, Jaimee Chamberlain at 10:12 p.m. on June 21. Authorities believe Carnel went missing while he was under the care of his mother's boyfriend, Anthony Bennett. Bennett has not been named a suspect but remains a person of interest.

"There has been no arrest. He has been interviewed on a couple of occasions. He refused a polygraph test. He has not been cooperative, or his cooperation has been minimal,” Cloutier said.

Kevin Chamberlain, Jaimee Chamberlain’s cousin and the family spokesperson, said, “We have no choice but to look at [Bennett] as a very serious prime suspect."

The body of Carnel Chamberlain, the 4-year-old boy missing since June 21, has been found underneath the porch of the home shared by his mother and her boyfriend, the Morning Sun reports.

The FBI and technicians from the Michigan State Police crime lab are on the scene of the Tomah Road home east of Mount Pleasant, according to The Sun.

Jamiee Chamberlain, 21, reported her son missing at approximately 10:15 p.m. Monday. Carnel was being watched by Chamberlain’s boyfriend, Anthony Bennett, 20. Bennett reportedly has not been cooperative with police and hired an attorney.

hope we get more info soon...why did it take a week to find him under his own porch? was body moved? didn't they have dogs out early on? glad he was found for the community's closure (no sympathy for mom-sorry, she KNEW he was being abused!)...
oh how i wish he was given up for adoption! why did they insist on giving mom a 2nd chance!?

That is the same question that many people are asking themselves (including myself), perhaps it was because they got the help of the FBI.

I am waiting for more details to come out about this very sad case.

The mother should have never left Carnel under the care of her boyfriend if she saw bruises on his body.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — The body of a 4-year-old boy missing for a week was found buried Thursday at his home, a family spokesman said.

Chamberlain, the tribe’s former chief, said he had no details about what led investigators back to the house after many days of searching woods, ponds and the tribe’s wastewater treatment areas.

The body “had to be in a grave. We had looked underneath before and didn’t see anything,” he said.

Tribal police referred calls to the FBI, which declined to comment on the investigation. Any charges in the case would be handled by federal authorities, who have jurisdiction over major crimes on Indian reservations.

UPDATE: Vigil underway in Carnel's memory

UPDATE AT 8:15 P.M. (WZZM) -- Tribal police have reportedly made an arrest in the case of a boy found dead on a Native American reservation near Mount Pleasant.

The Native News Network is reporting Anthony Bennett, 20, was arrested around 6:30 p.m. Thursday at his sister's home.

"Both Carnell's mother and Bennett were brought in for questioning on Friday. The mother took a polygraph test and everything looked normal. Bennett refused to take the test. According to a spokesperson from the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, "he was playing games with authorities."

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI (WNEM) - Breaking news in Isabella County where we've learned there's been an arrest in the criminal investigation involving the death of a 4-year-old boy.

Multiple sources tell us that the mother's boyfriend, Anthony Bennett, is in custody.

Officials said he was arrested around 6:30 p.m. Thursday at his sister's home, which is also located on the reservation.

No charges have been brought against Bennett at this hour.

Have been watching this story for a few days. Every time I read about a child abused or murdered by a "boyfriend" of a single mother, I am angry and heartbroken all over again.

Thought I'd post some info I've been reading about this. I'm not suggesting that all boyfriends are potential abusers or killers, but there is emerging research into the phenomena of "bad" (define that in your own way) boyfriends abusing/ killing the children of their partners. If we can do nothing else besides mourn these vulnerable children, we can work to educate ourselves about the risks and statistics. I don't know-- maybe that's just my heartache trying to find a way to make sense of these kinds of killings.

"They don't love the kid," said Martin Daly, author of a number of Canadian studies on the issue. "A lot of stepmothers and boyfriends regard the kid as undesired baggage who they wish had never been born. The child remains a resented nuisance at best."

Daly is the co-author of a 1999 Canadian study that found that an American child living with one genetic parent and one step-parent or a live-in companion was 100 times as likely to suffer fatal abuse as a child living with two genetic parents.

Anthony Bennett is pictured in an undated file photo. Bennett has been listed as a person of interest in the disappearance of Carnel Chamberlain. According to reports, Carnel's body was found at his home at 7340 E. Tahoma Road on Thursday.

Bennett is believed to be at a federal holding facility in Bay City; he is not listed as an inmate in the Isabella County Jail. As of noon Friday, there were no charges against Bennett, 20, who lived at the Tomah Road home with then-girlfriend Jaimee Chamberlain, filed in the federal court docket system.

Gustovo Grodsinski, the FBI agent in charge of the case, told Tribal authorities that the case is a “sealed indictment.”
Sealed indictments are typically unsealed when the suspect is formally charged in front of a judge.

Bennett is expected to be charged in U.S. District Court in Bay City today.

Police return to location of missing boy's remains

Sources close to the investigation told TV5 remains of the little boy's body were actually found earlier this week, but it took a few days to confirm they were his.

A memorial service is planned for Friday night at Carnel's grandmother's house. The tribal women are gathering to sing and a customary fire will be ignited and burned for four days as a symbol of prayer and comfort for Carnel's family.

I don't understand, if they found a burned body of a little person buried under the deck of the home of the mom, why did they keep searching all around the area? Doen't that cost lots of money, and who else had a missing 4 y/o in the area?

Also, above link said the reservation police arrested Bennett, for other charges, not murder. I think they arrested him for the abuse that he admitted to the mom earlier. The Chief said the FBI would take over the case if they determine Bennett is responsible for the death of Carnel.

It is my opinion only, the reservation arrested him on abuse charges, in order to hold him until the FBI completes its investigation. As long as he is locked up, he can't disappear.

BTW, Carnel had only lived with his mom for the past month, he was being raised by the grandma. So, I would say the abuse begain almost immediately, and the 'mom' did nothing about it.

FBI is still investigating this case. They can't just arrest someone because they think they are guilty, they have to have the evidence to convict them.
