Police arrest Nova Scotia woman who reports say is 'Internet Black Widow'

SYDNEY, N.S. - Media reports in Nova Scotia say a 77-year-old woman arrested in connection with the suspected attempted murder of her husband in Cape Breton is a woman who became infamously known as the "Internet Black Widow."

The Cape Breton Regional Police declined to confirm the reports, but said they had a 77-year-old woman in custody who they believe matches the identity of a woman with a past criminal history of fraud and manslaughter charges.

On June 11, 2013, Melissa pleaded guilty to administering a noxious drug and failing the necessaries of life. The judge sentenced the 78-year-old woman to three and a half years in prison. The Crown, without success, had argued that the defendant's age should not be a factor in her sentencing.

    On December 16, 2014, a judge in Nova Scotia denied the black widow's request for parole. The judge ruled that Melissa will have to serve her entire sentence which meant she would remain behind bars until January 2017. When she walks out of prison she will be 82.
