CBS is reporting approx 27 dead, 9 of which are adults including the shooter. Hopefully that number will drop. They are not reporting how many are injured.

According to the AP Link, the shooter had 2 guns when killed, his daughter 8 yrs. old was NOT amount the children murdered.

CBS News’ John Miller reports there is preliminary information that the gunman was the father of one of the students. Miller additionally reports the gunman is 20 years old and is from New Jersey.

Lots of media errors. May I suggest you begin at the last timeline post and work back?

Also, elected Congressman from Conn: His niece/nephew attend the school. His sister went to the school and picked them up.

The additional horror, IMO, was the shootings from the office went out over the intercom system. Principal and school psychologist both were killed. Three currently hospitalized in critical care.

My heart is so heavy for these little ones. Terrible, terrible tragedy. The scars of this Christmas will be with them for every new Christmas. As it will for each family associated with the town, the school.

Freckles = I was reading about the new security features implemented this year at that school including lock down for all exterior doors at 9:30 am. & a strict policy for signing in the office, BUT the murderer's mother was a teacher at the school and everyone knew him, so, just speculating, any rules in place would probably have been relaxed for him as most knew him that worked at the school.

Too, this must have started early as his mother was murdered in her home, then Adam drove her car to the school and started the rampage.

Being reported, is the murderer's girlfriend and her girlfriend are reported missing.

I want to hear about the person found in the woods in camouflage pants. The dad is being interviewed with FBI, the 24 yr. old brother is being interviewed by LE ans is said to have nothing to do with this.

BUT, of course, the story is liquid still at this time, anything can change.

That is good news. I feared for her safety also.

Sorry, but I had to back away from this for a while. Everything that was on the news all day...was just too much.

Tamta would be better to express her opinions on this but from what I have watched today, it seems that Adam L not only took away his mother but everything she loved.

Including himself if you consider the suicide.

Of course, this too is probably going to change, but I have read that the brother said Adam had a form of "autism" or possibly "Asperger's Syndrome" & had little relationship with him since 2010.

Asperger's Syndrome falls under the category of a spectrum disorder and Autism, but some of the kids I worked with that were diagnosed with "asperger's," were on the high end of functioning on the the scale. It seemed, imo, the social functioning continued to be a problem for many of them, some were aggressive, especially the boys and although they could attend regular classes because they were so smart, most had to have a personal "aide" escort or follow them from class to class due to their interactions with other student's. Rarely have I seen Asperger Syndrome kids drive although SOME do, it is common to see them continue to live at home with their parent's, sometime forever.

Because Adam took his mother's car to drive to the school to slaughter the children/teacher's, I have doubts that Adam has "asperger's syndrome," though I don't doubt he is mentally challenged in some aspect, I just don't know what his correct diagnosis is. I have never heard of anyone with asperger's syndrome premeditating the murder of children or anyone else, I guess the information will eventually come out.

Too, the few pictures I have seen of Adam, it appears he is a small person, of course I don't trust the media to portray an accurate photo. there is no telling how old the photo is or how old he was in the photo.

This morning he appears to have started his day by shooting his mother Nancy in the face, and then driving to nearby Sandy Hook Elementary School armed with at least two handguns and at least one semi-automatic rifle.

There, before turning his gun on himself, he shot and killed 20 children, who President Obama later described as between five and 10 years of age. Six adults were also killed at the school. Nancy Lanza was found dead in her home.

A relative told ABC News that Adam was "obviously not well."

Family friends in Newtown also described the young man as troubled and described Nancy as rigid. "[Adam] was not connected with the other kids," said Barbara Frey, who also said he was "a little bit different ... Kind of repressed."

State and federal authorities believe his mother may have once worked at the elementary school where Adam went on his deadly rampage, although she was not a teacher, according to relatives, perhaps a volunteer.

Nancy and her husband Peter, Adam's father, divorced in 2009. When they first filed for divorce in 2008, a judge ordered that they participate in a "parenting education program."

Peter Lanza, who drove to northern New Jersey to talk to police and the FBI, is a vice president at GE Capital and had been a partner at global accounting giant Ernst & Young.

Adam's older brother Ryan Lanza, 24, has worked at Ernst & Young for four years, apparently following in his father's footsteps and carving out a solid niche in the tax practice. He too was interviewed by the FBI. Neither he nor his father is under any suspicion.

"[Ryan] is a tax guy and he is clean as a whistle," a source familiar with his work said.

What an unbelievable tragedy. My heart just breaks for the parents, the students and the teachers.
My thoughts and prayers are with all those whose lives are forever changed.
The parents who lost children, the children who lost friends, the teachers who lost students,
the students who lost teachers and their principal. How incredibly sad.

Whatever we want, whatever we feel we are entitled to regardless of ANY moral compass. If we want to beat our gf, molest a child, kill someone, we feel we are ENTITLED to our FEELINGS. No logic need apply for we can justify ALL our actions with a bad childhood, too many Twinkies, our drug addictions, WHATEVER.

We need to stop this mad circle.
We need to let our compassion and love flow through our fingers to HELP others for it helps ALL of us.
Don't drug us mindlessly because it is easy but hear us, lift your arms to help us because it is RIGHT for ALL of us.

We learn by helping others. At home. At schools. In our neighborhoods and towns. Smile! Know you are doing God's work when you have the patience to give of yourself to another. Be a better parent. A better neighbor. A better person.

I would only add that the moral compass has in part dissolved because of things like the vile TV shows that normalize drugs and deviant behaviours. As well as the pop culture of music where everyone is B****es and Ho's and the gangster rap. We seem to be developing a culture that normalizes violence and deviance and immediate gratification no matter the cost.

Where does this end?

My heart goes out the families in this community not only to those that lost precious children, but to those whom I know will be having very mixed feelings because their children were safe. I am certain that some of those parents will have not only relief but guilt because they were the lucky ones. The trauma in this community is so far reaching. Prayers to all.

Some of the "heroes" for the day, IMO:

The staff/faculty who flipped on the intercom system and broadcast the shooting, yells, so ALL teachers were aware and able to shut down the class doors;

Custodian who ran through the halls yelling at teachers to lock doors;

The parent who called 911;

Teachers who locked and barricaded doors while moving children away. On teacher locked them all in a bathroom, perching students onto the toilet for room. Then, she slid a bookcase to block the door. When PD arrived, she told them to slide credentials under the door; then told them to get a key to unlock the door for she would not do that. She told her students she loved them and wondered if she would be in trouble because teachers aren't supposed to say that; however, if those were the last words her students ever heard, she wanted the little ones to know they were loved.

Freckles - that is an excellent thought for the families, it's hard to even imagine the horror that they had a child yesterday at breakfast, shortly after school started, their child was murdered. Families deserve the utmost privacy, it's sad the MEDIA in their zealousness to report anything sometimes forget the pain/loss/emotions of the victim's families, imo.
