Developing Stories - Page 14 Empty Re: Developing Stories

This is an update on the missing teens from the boys' ranch.
It is confusing and disjointed.  Hard to determine IF there is a problem and what it might be. The pictures, however, are not appealing to me. That kitchen sink is a single basin and the teen is attempting to wash dishes in it... I wonder how thoroughly this place was checked out?

There is a story circulating of a boy killed on the ranch in Sept 2013.... it is in the link below.

http://www.missingpersonsofamerica.com/2013/10/what-is-going-on-at-tierra-blanca-ranch.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MissingPersonsOfAmerica+%28Missing+Persons+of+America%29

Edited:
There is a short vid on the bottom of the page.
This is VERY informative.
Problems of abuse have been going on at the Ranch since at least 2007.
State is still permitting teen males to be sent to the Ranch despite the many reports of physical abuse.
Threats of castration, denial of food, being hit on are normal.

Tierra Blanca Ranch, Deming, New Mexico

"...On one visit, Ms. Morgan recalled, other students told her quietly about a staff member known as Harold the Hun who beat Ryan with a Kubotan, a flexible stick. The conversation haunted her, and she pulled him from the program last October.

Soon after, a former ranch classmate told her that Ryan was beaten for hours by a staff member one day, after being unable to complete an exercise routine.

“I was sickened that we sent our child off thinking we were doing what was best for him,” Ms. Morgan said. “We had no idea that anything like this had happened to him.”

Since last May, Pegasus Legal Services for Children, a New Mexico law group, had been urging the state to look into the ranch. In a letter to state officials, the group noted that youths who spent time at the ranch reported to the police that children there “are routinely hit, shackled and handcuffed, deprived of food, deprived of full days of public instruction every school day, and forced to exercise as punishment.”

Records provided by the legal group show that since 2008, the police had responded to reports of child abuse at the ranch on several occasions. ..."

New Mexico: Governor Backs Alert on Youth Camp
October 14, 2013
"...Evidence found at a ranch for troubled youths corroborates abuse allegations by students, Gov. Susana Martinez said Monday in defending the state’s investigation into the Tierra Blanca High Country Youth Program. ..."

" ... Police continue to seek the operator of the ranch, Scott Chandler, for questioning. He filed a lawsuit last week accusing investigators of targeting the ranch for closing after a fatal car crash involving students. ..."

Former Tierra Blanca Ranch teen speaks out about his experience

" ... Connor Griffoul: We were placed in handcuffs and shackles and orange suits for three months straight. The entire time, we were camping, we weren't in a house. We were literally in handcuffs wearing orange jumpsuits and had to camp in a tent. We were there for nine months and I took seven showers. I wasn't allowed to talk to my friends, I was allowed to talk to my family. I got one phone call my entire stay there. I wasn't allowed to get letters from my mother. It was awful.

Connor Griffoul ran away from Tierra Blanca in 2008.

When a State Police officer found him, he noted in his report that Connor was in handcuffs and in possession of a stolen phone that Connor had used to call for help.

Instead of taking Connor to safety, that State Police officer returned Connor to the Tierra Blanca Ranch.

Connor Griffoul: A couple days after, we were sitting in camp and a helicopter started flying overhead and shortly after that Scott came and he told me you're going to jail for stealing the satellite phone. Pack all your stuff I'm taking you in. I said fine, get me out of here, I honestly would rather go to jail than be there.

Even in New Mexico's super max prison, inmates are allowed daily showers and given access to a toilet...."

4 On Your Side investigates reports of abuse at Tierra Blanca Ranch

"... In a police report, one teen described being forced by a staff member to put rocks and sand in a sock and beat his friend. The boys also described what they called a "firewall." When a teen is "firewalled," he's not allowed to talk to other people or be spoken to, which as you can imagine creates a very lonely existence. ... "

Cops hunting for 2 killers freed with fake Casey Anthony judge signature

By Associated Press | October 18, 2013 | 8:29am

Developing Stories - Page 14 3pics_escapekillers
The signature of Judge Belvin Perry, center, was apparently forged, allowing convicted killers Joseph Jenkins, left, and Charles Walker, right, to be freed. Photo: AP

ORLANDO, Fla. — As authorities hunt for two killers who were mistakenly freed by bogus court documents, prison officials and prosecutors across Florida scrambled to make sure no other inmates had been let out early.

The review comes three weeks after convicted murderer Joseph Jenkins walked out of prison, despite a life sentence. A week after he was let go, Charles Walker, who was also serving life, also was released.

It’s not clear exactly who worked up the fake documents ordering their release. Authorities said the paperwork in both cases was filed in the last couple of months and included forged signatures from the same prosecutor’s office and Chief Circuit Judge Belvin Perry. The documents also called for 15-year sentences.

Elias Acevedo, Neighbor Of Cleveland Kidnapper Ariel Castro, Indicted For Murders, Rapes

The Huffington Post | By Hunter Stuart Posted: 10/19/2013 12:13 pm EDT | Updated: 10/19/2013 12:13 pm EDT

A Cleveland man, described as a neighbor of Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro, faces 293 counts for the alleged murders of two women, and the rape of several others, including two children.

Law enforcement officials re-examined cases of other missing women in Cleveland following the Ariel Castro kidnappings and obtained the videotaped confessions from Elias Acevedo for two murders committed 18 years ago.

Acevedo, 49, was also indicted Thursday with hundreds of other criminal charges, including rape, gross sexual imposition and kidnapping.

Among those counts are charges related to the alleged kidnapping and rape of two girls, who were aged 8 and 11 at the time, according to NewsNet5.

A teen shoplifting at Victoria’s Secret was caught with a dead baby in her bag. Tiona Rodriguez was arrested after the body was found, the girl telling them she didn’t know she was pregnant, miscarried after 6 months and didn’t know what to do with the body. An autopsy showed the baby was full term and born alive before being killed. Rodriguez is currently at Bellevue hospital and facing serious charges.

Family believes body found in Stearns County is Mandy Matula

The remains of Mandy Matula, the 24-year-old Eden Prairie woman who disappeared in May, may have been found in Stearns County on Saturday.

A hiker discovered human remains about 1 p.m. in a shallow grave in Mississippi River Park, roughly eight miles north of Sartell, according to Eden Prairie police.

"We're hoping for the best, but praying for closure," Mandy Matula's father, Wayne Matula, said Saturday night. "It's been a long six months."

Eden Prairie police said Saturday that the identity and gender of the remains have not been confirmed.

But Wayne Matula said authorities had found bones alongside a University of Minnesota Duluth warmup jacket with No. 14 embroidered on it. Matula graduated from UMD in 2011, and her fast-pitch softball jersey from the school was No. 14 -- a number that stuck with her since her birth on Jan. 14, her father said.

"By putting two and two together, (authorities) believe these are the remains of Mandy," her father said.

UPDATE:

Mandy Matula's remains found in park, officials confirm

By Raya Zimmerman
rzimmerman@pioneerpress.com

Posted: 10/27/2013 12:01:00 AM CDT | Updated: a day ago

On the last night of her life, Mandy Matula got into the car of her ex-boyfriend, and she would not be seen again for nearly six months.

Search parties scoured her hometown of Eden Prairie, surrounding counties and the Mississippi River in search of her. The police's only suspect, Matula's ex-boyfriend David Marshall Roe, fatally shot himself in the head May 2, the day she was reported missing.

The search for the 24-year-old Matula was growing cold, until Saturday.

Human remains were found in a grave in a Stearns County wooded area Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, Eden Prairie police confirmed it was Matula.

Eden Prairie police visited Wayne and Lisa Matula’s home Sunday afternoon to tell them what they already knew in their hearts: The body found in a shallow grave Saturday was that of their only daughter, Mandy, who had been missing for almost six months.

Wayne Matula said officers told him his 24-year-old daughter had died from a single bullet to her head and that the Ramsey County medical examiner had identified the remains through dental records.

Found: David Welch, 54, Kansas

" ... SALT LAKE CITY -- A missing Kansas man spent his final days trapped in the wreckage of his van in a rural Utah ravine -- writing goodbye letters to the family he unexpectedly left in early September.

David Welch, 54, was found on Oct. 18 by a hitchhiker who spotted the crash in a desolate stretch of eastern Utah more than 50 miles from any town, said Utah Highway Patrol trooper Gary Riches.

They found Welch trapped inside his mangled minivan at the bottom of a 50-foot ravine -- with hand-written notes to his wife and four adult sons...."

Missouri man poised to be released after appeals court overturns conviction in 2001 murder

Ryan Ferguson, 29, has maintained his innocence in the death of Missouri newspaper editor Kent Heitholt. After reviewing evidence, an appeals court ruled that Ferguson must be released if Boone County prosecutors don’t file for a retrial within 15 days.

Ryan Ferguson takes an oath before taking the stand in his own defense during a 2005 murder trial at the Boone County Courthouse in Columbia, Mo.

A Missouri man imprisoned almost a decade ago for a murder he says he didn’t commit is poised to go free.

An appeals court on Tuesday overturned the conviction against Ryan Ferguson, who is serving a 40-year prison sentence in the 2001 strangulation death of a newspaper editor.

Following a September hearing — one that Ferguson described as “the last real opportunity we have” — a panel of judges has ruled that he didn't get a fair trial. As a result, he must be released if prosecutors don’t file for a retrial within 15 days.

But Ferguson, 29, could be let out even sooner now that his lawyer says she plans to file for a bond motion.

“The ruling is great,” attorney Kathleen Zellner told the Daily News. “We’ve always had a lot of confidence in the court and that it would undo this travesty.”

Conviction of Ryan Ferguson overturned by appeals court (Video)

Posted on: 9:30 am, November 5, 2013, by Melanie Moon, updated on: 10:26pm, November 5, 2013

KTVI) – A Missouri appeals court has overturned the conviction of  29-year-old Ryan Ferguson. He was convicted in the 2001 strangulation death of a Jefferson City newspaper sports editor named Kent Heitholt.  Ferguson was convicted in 2005 and received a 40-year sentence.  But, there was no physical evidence linking him to the crime.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch it’s not clear if the state will seek to retry Ryan Ferguson after Tuesday’s ruling.

Court documents say, “Writ of Habeas Corpus is issued. Ferguson’s convictions are vacatedand Ferguson is ordered discharged from the custody of the department of corrections unless the State elects to retry him.”

Bizarre Murder Conviction Based On 'Dream-Like' Memories Gets Tossed — After Man Spends 8 Years In Prison

ERIN FUCHS | NOV. 6, 2013, 5:53 PM

Developing Stories - Page 14 Heitholt

Ryan Ferguson waits for proceedings to start, Friday, April 23, 2004, in Columbia, Mo. Ferguson is charged in the 2001 murder of Columbia Daily Tribune sports editor Kent Heithol.

A Missouri court has vacated the murder conviction of a man whose friend turned him in for murder based on "dream-like" memories of the two of them committing the crime.

The victory for Ryan Ferguson, 29, comes eight years after a jury convicted him of murdering a newspaper sports editor, largely based on the testimony of Ferguson's friend, Charles Erickson.

Columbia Tribune sports editor Kent Heitholt was beaten and strangled to death in the newspaper parking lot on Halloween night of 2001.

Kathryn Stalbaum Missing: Teen Disappeared While Bicycling To School

Wisconsin authorities are searching for a missing 15-year-old girl who disappeared while riding her bicycle to school.

Inspector Eric Severson of the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department said Kathryn J. Stalbaum left her Genesee home at about 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, after she texted a friend saying she missed the school bus.

Stalbaum told her friend she was going to ride her bicycle to school, but she never arrived and her current whereabouts are a mystery. The teen’s mother reported her missing in the afternoon, when she failed to return home after school.

Investigators said the teen does not have a history of running away and they are concerned because of the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.

"This particular missing teen [case] has some peculiarities that cause us some elevated concern ... Her family has a good close relationship with her where she maintains contact. The fact that she’s been gone for the time frame that she has is unusual,” Severson said.

WAUKESHA CO. (WITI) — Waukesha officials say the bicycle of a missing 15-year-old Town of Genesee girl has been located because of a citizen tip. That development was revealed in a news conference on Thursday afternoon, November 7th.

Kathryn Stalbaum, a freshman at Kettle Moraine High School, was last seen around 6:15 a.m. on Tuesday, November 5th at her Town of Genesee residence.

Officials said in the news conference they are looking over the bike for any evidence that might help lead to Stalbaum. But they would not say where the bike was located.

Officials also said they located Stalbaum’s teal backpack. It was found in her school locker.

Secret Searches: 43% of San Diego warrants kept secret from public

Posted: Nov 08, 2013 5:25 PM CST Updated: Nov 08, 2013 8:02 PM CST

By David Gotfredson, Field Producer

By Phil Blauer, Anchor/Reporter

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) -- Almost half of local search warrants authorizing officers to enter homes and seize private property are blocked from public scrutiny, despite state law mandating the records be open to inspection after the warrant is executed.

At the San Diego County Superior Court downtown, judges seal 43% of search warrants in advance of the warrant being served, according to a CBS News 8 review of the court's search warrant records.

Even after officers execute the search warrants, the records remain sealed indefinitely, in most cases forever, because there is no process in place to assure legal review of the sealed records.

"It's very surprising and disturbing that such a large number search warrants and judicial records are being kept from the public," said David Loy, attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of San Diego & Imperial Counties.

Detroit — The 19-year-old woman who was and killed by a Dearborn Heights homeowner Nov. 2 was shot in the face and not at close range, according to an autopsy report issued Monday.

The weapon was a shotgun, according to the report.

According to the autopsy report, McBride’s clothing was wet. The young woman, who is described in the report as 5’4,’’ was wearing a blue jacket, black undershirt, black pants and a pair of white socks. There was no mention of shoes.

By Anthony Galloway and Nick Johnson, NBC News

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri's attorney general has dropped all charges against Ryan Ferguson, who was convicted 10 years ago of brutally beating and strangling well-regarded newspaper editor Kent Heitholt on a fateful  2001 Halloween night in Columbia, Mo. The state will not retry Ferguson.

“We are on our way to Missouri. We will not leave until Ryan Ferguson walks out of the front door of the Jefferson City Correctional Center,” tweeted Ferguson’s attorney, Kathleen Zellner, Tuesday afternoon.

"Dateline NBC's" Keith Morrison first profiled Ferguson in 2011, six years after his 2005 conviction, and sat down with him hours before the announcement of his release. "Dateline's" new interview will air later this week.

If I remember correctly, I posted many articles about this family on Developing Stories at The Hinky Meter.

The remains of the McStay family have been found.  The parents have been identified via dental records.  Their 2 boys have not been positively identified yet; pending DNA tests.

McStay family remains found in desert, mystery remains

By Rick Rojas and James Rainey

Los Angeles Times -Los Angeles, CA

Nearly four years ago, the McStays left their snug home in suburban San Diego County on a chilly February evening. Piling into their Isuzu Trooper, parents Joseph and Summer and young sons Gianni and Joseph Jr. left behind two dogs, two bowls of popcorn and, soon, a mystery.

Snipped:

About 1,374 days later and about 100 miles to the north, San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies uncovered the skeletal remains of the parents and two small bodies believed to be their boys, authorities said Friday. An off-road motorcyclist had noticed a few scattered bones four days earlier, near what turned out to be a pair of shallow graves on the edge of the desert outside Victorville.

After years of false leads and purported sightings from around the nation and into Mexico, San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon put part of the mystery to rest when he announced that the four McStays were homicide victims. But the sheriff said it would take more investigation before detectives would have any hope of saying how or why the family died

A Massachusetts couple found dead along with their two infant sons inside a Massachusetts home Monday were having marital problems, a family member has revealed.

The bodies of 43-year-old Scott Jones, his wife 43-year-old Mei Kum Jones and their sons Colt and Cameron were discovered in a two-story, multi-family home in Arlington, a Boston suburb north of Cambridge, after police were asked to do a well-being check on the family. The twins would have turned a year old on Nov. 26.

Authorities have released few details about the deaths, but Mei Kum Jones' brother, Ben Li, said in an interview with Boston's WBZ-TV that the couple had recent marital problems.

Authorities say the case appears to be an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public. The deaths are being investigated as homicides.

Missouri serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin was executed by lethal injection on Wednesday after the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for him to be put to death for murdering a man outside a synagogue in 1977, a corrections spokesman said.

Another story about women being held for long periods of time. I don't understand how this happens!

Three women claiming to have been held in captivity as domestic slaves for 30 years have been rescued from a house in London and a man and a woman arrested, police and charity workers said on Thursday.
Police officers from a human trafficking unit took the man and woman, both aged 67, into custody at their home in south London early Thursday.

Something very wrong with this story!!

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. - Authorities say a car veered off a rain-slicked highway ramp in suburban Minneapolis, landing in a nearby holding pond and trapping five children underwater for several minutes until a tow truck could pull it out.
The conditions of the children haven't been released, although a St. Louis Park city spokeswoman says said they were unresponsive when they were pulled from the car Thursday morning.
State Patrol spokesman Lt. Eric Roeske says the children — ages 1, 5, 5, 6 and 7 — were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center.
The 23-year-old driver made it out on her own as the car sank and was in stable condition.
Roeske says the driver's relationship to the children wasn't immediately known. Names have not been released.

This is about the case(s) where the murderer selected his victims by the victims' having matching first letter of first name to first letter of surname. From Northern California.

Judge set to sentence convicted serial killer Naso
Posted: Nov 22, 2013 2:13 AM CST

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (AP) - Joseph Naso, the 79-year-old former photographer convicted of the decades-old killings of four women in Northern California, is scheduled to be sentenced Friday. Naso will face a possible death sentence when Marin County Superior Court Judge Andrew Sweet delivers his order as jurors voted for the death penalty. Naso was convicted of fatally strangling four prostitutes with matching initials: Roxene Roggasch, Carmen Colon, Pamela Parsons and Tracy Tafoya. wrote:
But prosecutors presented a trove of evidence collected from Naso's Reno, Nev. home, including photographs of partially nude women appearing dead or knocked out, and a journal describing rapes of numerous underage girls and women dating back to the 1950s. Investigators also found a "List of 10," featuring descriptions and references to the killings and the rural areas where the bodies were dumped. wrote:

Five Kids Survive Submersion in Icy Pond for Up to 45 Minutes

Five small children survived in near-freezing water for as long as 45 minutes after the car in which they were riding plunged off a highway into a holding pond near Minneapolis early this morning. All five children were unresponsive at the time of the rescue, but are alive. They were taken to hospitals, but their current condition is not yet known. Bystanders who saw the four-door sedan careen off the highway tried to help, swimming into the icy pond as the car slipped below the surface. wrote:

Patrol: Driver in pond crash lacked valid license

Roeske said rescuers pulled the children out one by one. The first child was pulled from the water about 25 minutes after the crash was reported, and the last one was in the water for about 45 minutes. Authorities confirmed Friday that two of them — 5-year-old Zenavia Rennie and 7-year-old Alarious Coleman-Guerrido — had died. The other three children were identified as Aliyana Rennie, 1, Amani Coleman-Guerrido, 5, and Zarihana Rennie, 6. wrote:

From above link...
http://news.yahoo.com/patrol-driver-pond-crash-lacked-valid-license-213443152.html

The intersection near this ramp has seen 18 crashes from 2010-2012, including one last year in which another vehicle went into the same storm water pond, said Minnesota Department of Transportation spokeswoman Bobbie Dahlke. She characterized the figure as "relatively low" for an intersection with signals and noted that the data includes the whole intersection, not just the ramp where Thursday's crash occurred. The Transportation Department is planning a $60 million Highway 100 reconstruction project that will remove that entrance ramp and build a new one on the south side of Highway 7. She said the ramp at issue is being relocated to maximize the merging distance for vehicles on Highway 100, not because of safety concerns. wrote:

Thank you Freckles… those stories freak me out…there have been so many cases where it was deliberate. Although not having a licence is deliberate.. So sad that children had to die because of lack of foresight and stupidity!! Breaks my heart!

This is so wrong! A juvi sent5 to an adult prison, kept in solitary for way over a year!!! No charges EVER filed... Welcome to the New World Order...

A teen who spent three years in a notorious New York jail without ever having been convicted or put on trial is coming forward after filing a lawsuit against New York City. In June, charges against Kalief Browder were mysteriously dropped and he was released, as first reported by WABC-TV. Browder was a 16-year-old sophomore in high school walking home from a party in the Bronx when he was arrested on a tip that he robbed someone three weeks earlier. He was hauled off to Rikers Island, a prison known for punishing conditions and overuse of force, and was held because he couldn’t pay the $10,000 bail. Browder went to court on several occasions, but he was never scheduled for trial. After 33 months in jail, Browder said a judge offered freedom in exchange for a guilty plea, threatening that he could face 15 years in jail if convicted. He refused. Then one day, he was released with no explanation. “They just dismissed the case and they think it’s all right. No apology, no nothing,” he told WABC-TV. Now at age 20 with his teen years behind him, Browder is first faced with finishing his GED and trying to make up for three years of his teen years lost. Browder says he spent more than 400 days in solitary confinement, was deprived of meals, and was assaulted and beaten both by officers and fellow inmates. Browder attempted suicide at least six times. Last month he filed a lawsuit last month against the city and several agencies. The Bronx District Attorney’s office has declined to comment. wrote:
