Kelli Stapleton, Michigan Woman, Accused Of Trying To Kill Autistic Daughter (Video)
By COREY WILLIAMS 09/05/13 09:34 PM ET EDT / AP
DETROIT — A northern Michigan mother – who had chronicled in an online blog the challenges her family faced caring for their autistic 14-year-old daughter – has been charged in a warrant with attempted murder in what police believe was a failed attempt at killing herself and the girl.
Kelli Stapleton, 45, was expected to be arraigned in the coming days after her release Thursday from a Grand Rapids hospital where she was treated for carbon monoxide poisoning.
Police said she and her daughter, Isabelle, were found Tuesday evening unconscious in the family's van in a rural part of Benzie County. Coals had been burned in the van and the windows were rolled up, state police Lt. Kip Belcher told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Re: Developing Stories
http://gma.yahoo.com/public-school-offers-86k-keep-autistic-boy-130414447.html
Public School Offers $86K to Keep Autistic Boy Out
Public school officials offered a California mother $86,000 to settle complaints about the previous treatment of her autistic, mute and diabetic son , to move him to a private school and to keep her from filing any further complaints about his care.
Heather Houston alleges that her 21-year-old son, David Swanson, was force-fed and discriminated against at school. She previously filed a complaint with the office of civil rights and says she plans to sue, but she still wants him to attend class because he's entitled to free public education until he turns 22.
David's education plan, which includes learning to write his name on a piece of paper, may not seem like much, but he has a right to it, Houston says.
"The law says he's allowed access to education," Houston told ABCNews.com. "I don't want their money. I never wanted their money."
Houston says she received the settlement offer two weeks after Yuba City, Calif., school officials turned David away on Aug. 15, the first day of classes.
"I don't get it, because he's a wonderful child," said Annette Armstrong, the private duty nurse who accompanied David to school that day to monitor his diabetes. "David had a desk in there. We were where we were supposed to be."
Read about the problems autistic children face after high school.
According to the federal Department of Education, public school districts are required to provide free appropriate public education, or FAPE, to students with disabilities until they age out of the system. If a district can't handle a particular students' needs, it can refer that student elsewhere, but the district is still responsible for paying for the alternative education, ensuring that it is appropriate for the student and providing transportation.
The unsigned settlement offer letter, obtained by ABCNews.com and dated Aug. 27, offers Houston $86,000 in exchange for waiving David's right to attend public school, for which he is eligible in California until he turns 22 in spring 2014. The letter also explains that if Houston accepts the money, she must drop her complaints against the school district and county superintendent's office and not file any new complaints or lawsuits against the school district or the county superintendent's office.
Yuba City School District's lawyer, Kim Bogard, acknowledged the existence of the settlement agreement offer, but would not comment on specifics regarding David's care or education.
Armstrong has cared for David for five years, helping him communicate with his iPad, monitoring his diabetes and administering his insulin as a nurse employed by the school district, Houston said. But Armstrong and Houston said the district found a reason to fire her after she complained about a teacher force-feeding David last year.
"They don't like me because they know I'm going to tell the truth," Armstrong said.
So Houston hired Armstrong as a private nurse for David because she was so good at caring for him and understanding when he was uncomfortable. Since David can't speak, Armstrong knows what's ailing him when he hums, puts his fingers in his ears or hops up and down.
The trouble began last school year, Armstrong explained. Even though helping David eat is one of her nursing duties, she says one teacher decided to teach David table manners. David didn't respond well because the teacher was forcing him to eat with a metal fork instead of a plastic one, Armstrong said. But they say David's autism renders him extra sensitive to metal, and he becomes agitated by the way metal forks feel against his teeth.
When Armstrong said she tried to intervene, the teacher ignored her, she said. When David spit the food out, she says the teacher pushed it back into his mouth and he eventually vomited.
"She would push his head in the bowl, make him spit in the bowl and stir it up and make him eat it," Armstrong said. "Her methods are bizarre."
Armstrong says she complained to her supervisor, and David stopped eating with the teacher.
But when a review of David's education plan came up and Houston wanted Armstrong present, Armstrong believes she was punished for her complaint. Armstrong said her bosses told her to call in sick that day.
She later learned that his education plan included learning hygiene, how to write down his name and phone number in case he ever gets lost, and how to communicate more words with his iPad, Armstrong said. There was nothing in it about table manners.
Armstrong said she learned more about the school's attitude toward David when an administrator expressed doubts that David could actually express himself with the iPad at all.
"He knows what we're saying right now," Armstrong said, speaking to ABCNews.com on the phone in the same room as David while his brother looked after him. "He's just not verbal."
Someone at the school eventually broke David's iPad by forcing him to leave it out in the rain for fear that he was bringing a recording device into the classroom, Houston said.
"They don't like her and they don't like him," Armstrong said.
The incident last year that most upset Armstrong, however, was a simple class party in which the teacher brought cupcakes for every student in the class.
Every student, that is, except for David, she says.
Not realizing that the teacher hadn't brought him one, Armstrong asked David if he wanted a cupcake, and he answered "yes" on the iPad. The teacher then said she wouldn't give David one because of his diabetes. Armstrong says she reminded the teacher that all she had to do was adjust his insulin levels, and he could eat it.
"I can even tell you what color he'll choose: red. If there's no red, orange," Armstrong said. "I always have tried to … advocate for David and just try to get through the day. Why do we have to make the kid so upset that he pukes on his shoes?"
The district had sent Houston a previous settlement agreement letter in June for $50,000, which she told ABCNews.com she rejected before she sent David back to school this month.
Bogard said Houston's lawyer didn't reject the first settlement agreement as Houston claims. Instead, Houston's lawyer responded with a counter offer asking for more money.
Houston said she did not authorize her lawyer to submit a counter offer. The lawyer, who has since quit, sent the district an itemized list to explain why the $50,000 wouldn't cover the costs of David's education, Houston said. She said it was a rejection, not a counter offer.
"Any offer made was part of ongoing confidential settlement discussions in which David's counsel fully participated," Bogard said in a prepared statement on behalf of the district. "The settlement offers that Ms. Houston refers to are no longer valid."
Bogard said the district denied any wrongdoing, but said she couldn't comment further, citing pending litigation.

Father of girl, 8, grandmother charged in girl's July murder in Austin
6:47 p.m. CDT, September 16, 2013
Warning: This story is extremely disturbing, on many levels
Snipped:
-----
When paramedics found 8-year-old Gizell Davis on the floor of her bedridden father's blood-spattered room, they saw wounds arching across her cold body, according to Cook County prosecutors.
Davis' grandmother was charged soon after with the strangulation and beating that left Davis dead in her family's South Austin home July 12. On Monday, a Cook County sheriff's deputy pushed the girl's gaunt father into court in a wheelchair to face first-degree murder charges of his own.
Andre Ford, 28, is not accused of inflicting any of the wounds on his daughter at the family home in the 5200 block of West Adams Street. Instead, prosecutors charged that he failed to try to stop the slaying and, in fact, took part by directing his mother's abuse of the girl. He told his mother to tie the girl to his bed, where she was allegedly forced to stand for four days straight. When the girl urinated on herself, Ford ordered that she be held down and forced to suck the urine out of the carpet, prosecutors said.

CBS/AP) ELLENWOOD, Ga. - Police are searching for a 14-year-old girl after they say home invaders abducted her from her house south of Atlanta.
Police early Tuesday morning were stopping cars and checking them during an all-out search for Ayvani Hope Perez.
Clayton County police say the two men entered the Ellenwood home through a back door around 2:15 a.m. Tuesday.
Officer Phong Nguyen said the home invaders demanded money and jewelry from the girl's mother. When the woman said she didn't have any, one of the men shot and killed the family dog.
Police say they then took the girl, described as Hispanic, with brown eyes and black hair. She's 4 feet, 9 inches tall and 93 pounds. She was wearing pajama bottoms and a "Superheroes" shirt.
Police say the men left in a grey Dodge.

ELLENWOOD, Ga. — As law enforcement agencies all around Georgia search for 14-year-old kidnapping victim Ayvani Perez, one of her best friends is praying for her safe return.
"I want to tell her that I love her," said Perez's friend and classmate Ariana Soeun. "I hope that she comes home because she knows everybody misses her."
A Levi’s Call alert has been posted for Perez, who authorities said was abducted from her family’s Ellenwood home Tuesday about 2 a.m. Police released sketches of the two armed men they believe took her during the home invasion on Brookgate Drive. Police said the mother tried to hide her two children, but the suspects found the family, along with the family’s dog, and demanded money and jewelry.

Law enforcement released these composite sketches of the men suspected of taking Ayvani Perez.

Illinois reporter in contempt of court for not revealing source

The online reporter who has been embroiled in a first amendment fight because of his refusal to divulge his sources for a story on a grisly double murder was found in contempt of an Illinois court on Friday.
Will County judge Gerald Kinney issued the decision and ordered Joilet Patch reporter Joe Hosey to disclose his source within 180 days, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Hosey, a 10-year veteran journalist known for reporting on the Drew Peterson case, has said he will go to jail rather than give up the source. Kinney has earlier ruled that the matter is not protected by the state's shield law, and that Hosey must comply or face an indefinite term behind bars.

CNN) — An appellate court on Thursday ordered a new trial for a Florida woman who was sentenced to 20 years in prison for firing a gun to scare off her allegedly abusive husband, ruling that a jury was improperly instructed on self-defense.
Marissa Alexander’s case will be retried because the jury was wrongly told that — for her to claim self-defense — she needed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that her husband was about to seriously harm her, the appellate court said.
Rather, the appellate court pointed out, the prosecution had the burden to prove that Alexander herself was guilty of aggravated assault.

Rainey had lacerations to his head and a skull fracture. Both of Rainey's arms, six ribs and his left hand were broken. He died of his injuries later at a hospital.
According to an affidavit obtained by CBS Denver, Owen described the beating to police and said she went to the alley where he slept and attacked him after learning of the molestation.

EIGLARSH: {Snipped as unrelated} But first, this woman, 33-year-old Forsythia Owen. She`s been charged with first-degree murder. Police says she beat a homeless man to death with a baseball bat as he slept in an alley. Why? She claims it`s because he sexually assaulted her little girl.
But there`s so much more to this story. Take a look.
- Spoiler:
- (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: According to police, the man was 42-year-old Denzle Rainey. He had been beaten and was left in the garage.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: After some alcohol struggles at home, he became homeless and often slept in that alley.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The victim suffered a cracked skull.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Forsythia Owen charged with first-degree murder --
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Demonstrated how she struck Rainey over and over again.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Owen was walking around claiming Rainey had inappropriately touched a 4-year-old girl.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I don`t believe it. I just want to know why she did it. Why she hit him so hard.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: He never bothered anyone, never stopped anyone, never said anything to anyone.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: My husband is the most lovable, caring person that I know.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: From my understandings of looking at her, you could tell she was on something.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She was just babbling and babbling.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: He doesn`t deserve to be dead right now.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
EIGLARSH: In just a few minutes, I`m going to be talking exclusively to the victim`s wife. Naturally, she is outraged. She calls the sexual assault claim a complete lie.
But right now on the phone, I have KMGH reporter Jaclyn Allen.
Jaclyn, what`s the very latest with this?
JACLYN ALLEN, 7NEWS REPORTER (via telephone): Hi, Mark, thanks for having me.
Owen will be in court tomorrow on a long list of charges, including first-degree murder after deliberation. And the judge is going to allow cameras in the courtroom for that. And we`ve seen immense public interest in this case here because this young Englewood woman claims that she killed a homeless man she believed was a pedophile.
But police arrested Forsythia Owen after they found Denzle Rainey`s body in the alley behind her home Sunday. And the arresting officer says that she confessed that she heard, she demonstrated to officers how she hit him over and over with a baseball bat.
She told police that she did it after a little girl said she`d been sexually abused by Rainey. Rainey has been homeless and sleeping in that alley there for a few weeks, working through what his family called a rough patch and dealing with alcoholism. And we found he does have a criminal history, but that`s mostly alcohol related.
Forsythia Owen on the other hand, she`s the one with the violent criminal past, including multiple assault charges. She was convicted of stabbing an ex-boyfriend in the chest. Also, court records showed she`d been diagnosed with a mood disorder and abused alcohol, meth and cocaine.
So, we`re definitely looking at some credibility issues there as indicated by the premeditated murder charges that she is now facing -- Mark.
EIGLARSH: Yes, there`s no question there`s going to be some attacks to her credibility.
Jaclyn, I certainly thank you for joining us.
Tonight, we`ve got Lauren Lake from TV`s "Paternity Court", HLN`s Lynn Berry, CNN legal analyst Danny Cevallos and Judge David Young, former criminal court judge, I know, I`ve been in front of him a number of times, and host of "Justice with a Snap."
OK, let`s get serious for a moment.
Here`s a list of these injuries that led to his death -- listen to this - a skull fracture, six broken ribs, which cut his liver, two broken arms, a broken wrist.
Lynn, let`s start with you. Obviously, the defense lawyers are going to argue she was clearly justified because this guy was allegedly a pedophile. You think somehow that`s going to fly?
LYNN BERRY, HLN HOST: You know, what`s difficult in this case is there`s allegations that a child was molested. But police have not come out and said a child has been molested, and her violence how incredibly brutal this murder was goes to something so much deeper than just I`m trying to stop a man that harmed my child.
This was violent to a different degree. And her criminal history, her multiple assaults are going to come into play. No doubt about that.
EIGLARSH: Well, let`s talk about that. This mother has been arrested on multiple assault charges in the past, including stabbing her ex- boyfriend in the chest.
Lauren Lake -- what does that say to you, Lauren Lake?
LAUREN LAKE, ATTORNEY: Mark, you know, it doesn`t sound good. I`m a straight shooter. It`s not what you want to hear when you`re a defense attorney and you`re trying to say your client just lost control because she heard this ridiculous, incredible, disgusting news that this homeless person had in some way molested her child.
However, with that kind of background, it`s an issue. Ultimately, I want to know where was the bat? Did she bring it with her to the alley? Was it in the alley?
There`s several facts I want to know to figure out whether this was premeditated, whether it was this kind of heat of passion in the moment. Did the child point the man out and then just in that moment she attacked him?
There`s so many facts I want to know. I haven`t gotten there yet.
EIGLARSH: Right. Let`s go to Danny Cevallos. Danny, the good thing about being in the big box and hosting, is I get to put you all on the spot.
So, Danny, we haven`t planned this out. But you now are defending this woman. You`re giving your closing argument. What are you going to say?
DANNY CEVALLOS, CNN LEGAL ANALYST: Well, I`m going to hope I can convince a jury to forget the fact this is hardly a self-defense case as it is.
Number one, any danger had already passed. If the man was in the alleyway, he didn`t pose any immediate threat. And that`s going to be a real hurdle to get by. I`m going to have to hope I can draw on the jury`s heartstrings and make them forget this is not a good self-defense case at all, and to have them thinking about defensive child, little child. He may or may not have done something inappropriate with a child.
So, that would have to be any defense attorney`s approach because bottom line, this is a terrible self-defense case. The self-defender steps into the shoes of the person they`re protecting and the child was nowhere nearby. Not in danger at the time.
EIGLARSH: Judge Young --
(CROSSTALK)
EIGLARSH: Go ahead -- Samantha --
BERRY: They`re going to have to overcome the fact that she also -- there are also court records that says she has a mood disorder and she has a history of meth, cocaine, drug abuse, alcohol abuse. That`s going to be hard to overcome.
EIGLARSH: I want to ask Judge Young. Listen, I`m smelling a clear jury pardon request where the defense turns to the jury, somehow blames the victim and says, you know what, you`ve got to excuse this conduct. Is that what you`re seeing, Dave?
JUDGE DAVID YOUNG, FORMER CRIMINAL COURT JUDGE Probably, Mark. But, you know, I could tell you I have a body like Mario Lopez and you`re not going to believe it. Just like this woman --
EIGLARSH: No, I`m saying --
YOUNG: Listen, without any more evidence, I think this woman is delusional and I think that -- you know, I just thought of something. Have you ever seen that woman and George Zimmerman together at the same time? Do you think she might be George Zimmerman with ovaries? Could be. Could be.
EIGLARSH: Very interesting thought. I had not thought of that. Samantha, what do you think?
All right. Let me do this. We need to talk about how she was acting the day after the beating. Apparently, we`re hearing from neighbors that she was acting extraordinarily bizarre and strange. Listen to this.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: From my understandings of looking at her, you could tell she was on something. That`s why my little sister and I would stay away from her.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She was babbling and babbling, something about her being molested or something like that, you know? I mean, she was kind of incoherent about everything. She was talking and talking and rambling and rambling.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
EIGLARSH: So, Lauren Lake, sounds to me like we`re going to hear possibly some elements of drug abuse, maybe mental illness. Is that what`s at play here?
LAKE: Well, possibly, Mark. But then the issue is, OK, if she has a mental defect, did it in some way affect her ability to know right from wrong the time of her actions if she knew I beat up this homeless man because my daughter said or I heard that he`d molested my daughter. That is contrary to the mental defect.
This is -- this case is a mess for her, because she`s bringing so much baggage to the table. As the defense attorney, you`ll have a difficult time.
EIGLARSH: Yes, Cevallos, this is your fake client, I`m putting you on the spot here. Are you going to get her out on bond? Any chance of that?
CEVALLOS: On bond on this case?
EIGLARSH: Yes.
CEVALLOS: That`s not going to happen. What Mark is saying --
EIGLARSH: Come on, what kind of lawyer are you, man? Of course, it`s going to happen, make the argument.
CEVALLOS: Oh, make the argument. She`s not -- yes, I`ll make the argument. The argument is this --
EIGLARSH: Please?
CEVALLOS: She`s not a threat to society, an immediate threat. She`s not a risk of flight. Her parents are here, they`re putting up their house.
EIGLARSH: Danny, there`s more passion -- Danny, there`s more passion in this chair that I`m sitting in.
Judge Young, any chance you`d give her a bond.
CEVALLOS: Let her out.
EIGLARSH: David, Judge Young, are you going to let her out?
YOUNG: I wouldn`t let her out on one of my worst days.
OK. This woman has so many negatives against her. And, you know, but you have to remember, mark if this is true, then if I were the defense lawyer, I would try to get a lesser charge instead of first-degree murder in which she can be put to death and maybe you can get for involuntary manslaughter, temporary insanity, do something to save her, because that`s the only way this woman is going to be saved, if she had a true belief this guy did something horrible to the 4-year-old kid, otherwise, done.
EIGLARSH: All right. Well, listen, stick around, panel.
Coming up, the victim`s wife is here exclusively. I can`t wait to talk to her. What she knows about this.
And then, later, George Zimmerman`s wife must really have it in for him. Wait until you hear what she said about the man she married.
Back right after this.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
EIGLARSH: Welcome back. I`m sitting in for my buddy Dr. Drew.
My co-host is the lovely and intelligent Samantha Schacher.
SAMANTHA SCHACHER, CO-HOST: Thank you.
EIGLARSH: And my panel -- you`re quite welcome. Well-deserved.
Now, we were talking about a homeless man beaten to death in an apparent revenge killing. That`s what they`re calling this. The admitted killer is this woman. Take a look.
She claims that he sexually assaulted her daughter. But her credibility obviously has been called into question.
Joining me now exclusive by phone is Lisa Rainey. She`s the wife of the victim who was brutally beaten to death.
Lisa? Lisa you there?
LISA RAINEY, WIFE OF THE VICTIM (via telephone): I`m here.
EIGLARSH: OK. Lisa, first of all, thank you for joining us. We appreciate it.
The first question I have to ask you is your husband was living on the street, apparently. First question, why was he homeless?
RAINEY: Why he was homeless?
EIGLARSH: Yes.
RAINEY: Because of his drinking.
EIGLARSH: His drinking was a problem for you, for him? What happened?
RAINEY: His drinking was -- he had an alcohol problem and me and my kids had to leave.
EIGLARSH: OK.
RAINEY: And that`s why he was homeless.
EIGLARSH: OK. When he was homeless, was he still having contact with the children?
RAINEY: No.
EIGLARSH: How long has he been homeless?
RAINEY: Three weeks.
EIGLARSH: OK. What can you tell us -- other than him being an alcoholic, what can you tell us about your husband?
RAINEY: Well, my husband was an amazing father, amazing husband. He loved his three kids. He loved me. And he would do anything for anybody that would ask him to do.
EIGLARSH Did you know this woman who attacked your husband?
RAINEY: Yes, we did. She lived above on Sherman Street where we used to live at.
EIGLARSH: What do you know about her?
RAINEY: Well, I just know her that when she comes up and down she says hi to us. I thought she was a cool person until all of this coming out. What she`s talking about my husband, it`s not true.
EIGLARSH: Lisa, the panel has questions for you.
Lauren, we`ll go to you.
LAKE: I just wanted to know, was there any concern in your relationship with your husband. Had you ever seen anything? Witnessed anything that would suggest your husband maybe had issues, maybe sexually assaulting any other child, inappropriate behavior towards a child -- anything that you know about?
RAINEY: No. My husband never harmed a child.
LAKE: OK.
RAINEY: Because if somebody hurt our three kids, he would go out there.
LAKE: Any sexual issues. Maybe -- I`m just asking -- addictions to pornography, anything that you think may be an issue sexually?
RAINEY: None whatsoever.
EIGLARSH: All right. Let me go to Samantha. You had a question.
SCHACHER: Lisa, first of all, my condolences, I`m sorry. I want to follow-up to Lauren was stating.
If you believe that he`s had no history, no prior history whatsoever, why do you think these allegations were brought up against him?
RAINEY: Because she`s -- I think she`s hiding for somebody else that was with her. And if there was somebody with her -- because I know for a fact that my husband would never hurt any child.
EIGLARSH: Well, Lisa, he was allegedly violent with you. Did you file a restraining order against him? Lisa?
RAINEY: Not for myself.
EIGLARSH: I`m sorry?
RAINEY: Not for myself.
EIGLARSH: Was he violent with someone else?
RAINEY: No.
EILARSH: OK.
Any other questions -- Lynn, go ahead.
BERRY: Yes, Lisa, you mentioned you think there was a second person involved. Why do you think she`s covering for a second person? She admitted to doing it herself.
RAINEY: Because I don`t think she could do that much damage to my husband.
BERRY: You don`t think she`s strong enough?
RAINEY: No.
EIGLARSH: Judge Young, what did you want to say?
YOUNG: Yes. You know, ma`am, you said you love your husband and he loved his kids and his kids loved him. Someone who loves somebody doesn`t let them stay in the streets for three weeks. How do you explain that to America? How do you explain that to the world?
RAINEY: He was an alcoholic. He went to treatment for it but he decided on his own to leave the treatment.
EIGLARSH: All right. Lisa, we thank you very much for joining us. We thank you again for that exclusive. We appreciate the insight.

Missing U student Anarae Schunk’s trail ends in Rosemount (Video)
Article by: PAT PHEIFER , Star Tribune | Updated: September 27, 2013 - 2:33 PM
Missing U student Anarae Schunk went to a woman’s house with her ex-boyfriend, now a murder suspect, charges against the two said.
Anarae Schunk, 20, was last seen with the suspect in a fatal shooting at Burnsville bar on Sunday. The HelpFindAnarae Facebook page shared this selfie of Schunk. The photo was most likly taken in a mirror making the logo read in reverse.
After a fatal shooting outside a Burnsville bar, Anarae Schunk went to a Rosemount townhouse with the suspect and the woman accused of harboring him, the woman told investigators. But both of the accused are silent about what happened to the missing 20-year-old after that.
Family and friends spent a fifth day Thursday in an increasingly urgent attempt to find her, even as police continued to say public participation in searches could compromise a crime scene.
“What we are asking now is … an official embrace of public engagement in the recovery efforts,” a statement from Schunk’s family said. “With the criminal charges now public record, the greatest potential contaminant of the … investigation is time. We are fighting against the clock and need all hands on deck to bring her home safely.”
Murder charges were filed Thursday against Anthony Lee Nelson, 31, in the fatal shooting early Sunday in the parking lot of Nina’s Grill in Burnsville.

Ambassadors, generals with many stars, senior White House officials and closely read columnists — all would walk past the yellowing kitchen, which looked as if it hadn’t been updated since the Ford administration, and down a narrow flight of stairs into the dimly lighted dining room. Guests were arrayed around the table according to rank, with the most important ones squeezed in the center. Although the Old World meals could be quite elaborate — venison paté, duck in bitter orange — they were prepared and served entirely by the host, a stickler for protocol named Albrecht Muth."

German man says he's ready for DC murder trial
Updated: 3:20 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, 2013 | Posted: 3:19 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, 2013
By ERIC TUCKER
The Associated Press
WASHINGTON — A German man charged with killing his 91-year-old wife has told a judge in a handwritten note that he is "willing, able and ready" for the murder trial despite a fast that he acknowledges has physically weakened him.
Albrecht Muth, 49, also reiterated in his letter his plans to represent himself, in place of his court-appointed lawyers, at his December trial in D.C. Superior Court.
Though his intermittent starvation has in the past left him hospitalized, postponed court proceedings and "is somewhat weakening" him, Muth wrote that he plans to continue fasting for religious purposes and in keeping with the "Holy Orders of the Eternal Father."
"As I said on my last visit with you, you live in your secular world. I live in my religious world. Do let us have the two meet in December," Muth, in an apparent reference to his upcoming trial, said in the letter to Superior Court Judge Russell Canan. "You should not force me to give up my religious fast to acquiesce to secular demand, thus violating a key tenet of my religious life, which is at the core of my being. My active participation in my trial should not be predicated on violating my religious life."
Muth is awaiting trial in the August 2011 killing of journalist Viola Drath, a fellow expatriate who wrote often on German affairs and regularly hosted dignitaries for dinner in the row home the couple shared in Washington's posh Georgetown neighborhood.

Missing 5-Year-Old Boy Returns To Arkansas After Mom’s Arrest (Video)
Posted on: 7:37 am, October 10, 2013, by Larry Henry and Shain Bergan, updated on: 06:03pm, October 11, 2013
The missing Sebastian County 5-year-old boy who was recovered by the FBI following his mother’s arrest in New Mexico arrived back in Arkansas on Friday morning and reunited with his custodial grandparents.
The boy was found safe following an Amber Alert and a major police search Thursday that culminated with an FBI search near Albuquerque.
Rainy Rhae Whitsitt Rouse, 25, of Rio Rancho, N. M., was suspected by police of taking her son, Quinn Whitsitt, from the Central City home where he lived with his grandparents early Thursday morning, officials said.
She has been arrested in New Mexico on a warrant issued from Sebastian County, Ark., and faces a felony charge in Arkansas of interference with child custody, said Daniel Shue, Sebastian County prosecuting attorney. That is a Class D felony punishable by up to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine, he said.

NM authorities say 1 boy from youth camp back home
"...The search comes after the Albuquerque Journal reported last week that state authorities were investigating claims that teenage boys were beaten and forced to wear leg shackles and handcuffs for minor violations of rules at the unlicensed program.
A search warrant was executed Friday as part of the investigation of abuse at the Tierra Blanca High Country Youth Program, located at a 30,000-acre compound in high desert country, about seven miles from Hillsboro. Officials said that the teens, ages 13 and 17, weren't at the property in Sierra County, nor was program operator Scott Chandler, who has been named a person of interest in the case. ... "

8:00 a.m
One or more of the boys has been returned to his parent’s, according to State Police. However, police said that until they are in a position to “physically confirm” the boys’ safety the Amber Alert will still be active.
Police are also asking that parents of the missing teens contact State Police, who will give parents directions on how to proceed. That number is 575-382-2500.
State Police issued an Amber Alert on Friday evening for nine residents of a southern New Mexico ranch for troubled teens who are being sought as witnesses and victims in connection with a state child abuse investigation.
The alert names the nine boys and also asks for help in locating the owner of the program, Scott Chandler, and said State Police believe the boys are in danger because “of the nature of this abduction.”
Law enforcement officers from state and local agencies were searching by air and ground for the teens Friday afternoon.
The search was directed at two areas, one in the remote area of the 30,000 acre Tierra Blanca Ranch High Country Youth Program spread near Hillsboro and the other in the Deming area along I-10. Part of the ranch is in the rugged Black Range, a forested and mountainous area.
Social workers from the state Children, Youth and Families Department and State Police raided the ranch Friday morning with court orders allowing them to take custody of the boys, but found headquarters empty except for a lone ranch hand.
Gov. Susana Martinez said Friday afternoon that officials were concerned the teens had been moved to keep them out of state custody.
“They need to know law enforcement is looking for them,” Martinez said. “I don’t know what would cause them to flee.”
According to public court documents, CYFD claims to have found significant evidence of pervasive medical neglect, systematic emotional and psychological abuse, potential criminal sexual contact and penetration of children and the shackling, handcuffing and hooding of children – in some cases for periods of months.
Chandler and his attorney, Pete Domenici Jr., have denied any abuse. They say parents who voluntarily placed boys at the ranch agreed to allow the ranch to impose appropriate discipline.
Scott Chandler, owner of Tierra Blanca Ranch, seen here Thursday, is being sought by State Police.
(Dean Hanson/Albuquerque Journal)
Domenici issued a statement late Friday in which he said the boys are safe and would be turned over to their parents but did not say when that would happen. Domenici’s statement said the boys were on a “previously scheduled activity away from the ranch for several days” and that the parents of the boys would contact State Police Deputy Chief David Martinez to confirm the safety of their sons.
That didn’t satisfy Deputy Chief Martinez. “Our priority is still to find that the children are safe and identify where they are at,” he said. “We still are working on this.”
The Amber Alert identified the boys as Charlie Lamb, 13; Ryan Sibbett, 16; Bryce Hall, 17; Mayson Myers, 13; Peter Adams, 16; Michael Rozell, 15; Oscar Ruiz, 17; David Easter, 17; and Evan Kogler, 16. No other information about the boys was included in the alert.
CYFD officials were there to serve sealed court orders to take nine residents of the program into protective custody at the same time State Police served sealed search warrants looking for evidence of child abuse.
They were unable to contact or locate Chandler, according to officials.
The court orders to take the minors into custody might not be enforceable on the parents since the documents were directed at Chandler and his ranch program, according to some officials.
State officials began their latest investigation into the program in September after a former resident was killed in a single-vehicle traffic accident on the ranch.
On September 30, a dozen teens in the program at that time were interviewed by police and CYFD workers. Two of the teens were taken out of the program by parents and a third turned 18 years old, taking him outside CYFD’s jurisdiction.
State officials were concerned that Chandler was trying to have the parents of the teens, most of whom live outside New Mexico, take custody to thwart the investigation into possible abuse.
Gov. Martinez said law enforcement personnel from Sierra County and surrounding areas had joined State Police in the search for the teens but that ranch headquarters appeared to have been evacuated on Thursday night.
“We don’t know what their plan is,” the governor said during her afternoon press conference.
Domenici in his press release blamed CYFD for escalating the situation.
Asked earlier in the day about complaints by Chandler that the CYFD investigation was biased and designed to close the program down, Martinez said she would not apologize for the state’s actions.
“I will never apologize for investigating allegations of child abuse,” Martinez said. “I will never apologize for making sure children are safe.”
The sealed search warrants and custody orders were approved by judges this week after the ranch failed to obtain a temporary restraining order to halt the investigation by the Children, Youth and Families Department.
State Police and CYFD have had several investigations into child abuse at the ranch dating back to 2006.
According to reports, investigators often found that the teens they wanted to talk to were camping in remote corners of the ranch, which borders the rugged Black Range.
CYFD Secretary Yolanda Deines called the situation “extraordinary. We have a lot of concerns about the treatment of these children.
“We normally investigate abuse within the home. In this case, we have the children currently at the ranch and have no sense as to how many kids may have been abused in the past.”
Deines said CYFD needed to interview the teens away from the ranch and have them given medical exams.
The ranch, in a lawsuit filed this week, complained that the state investigation was biased and denied allegations that children were abused in the program.
Chandler, at a press conference Thursday, said state officials were interfering in the rights of parents to make decisions on how to raise their children. He said the program used “restraints” only in dire circumstances to protect students and others.
The ranch has operated the youth program for 15 years and until 2006 took in teens referred by CYFD."

Keep this is mind when dealing with missing children:
" ... 1. ‘Stranger’ abductions of an infant from a family home almost never happen. In such cases of ‘missing’ young children, we always need to examine whether the family may be involved
Sadly, throughout the world, every year, many infants and young children die in their own homes, due to accident, neglect, negligence or a deliberate act. In some cases, especially where very young children are concerned, parents decide to hide the body, claiming their child has been abducted. Statistics have been kept in some countries about the proportion of alleged ‘stranger’ abductions of an infant from a family’s home (or from a temporary residence elsewhere, such as being on holiday). They show that in the vast majority of cases of so-called ‘stranger abductions’ of infants from a family home, it later turns out - when the full facts emerge - that a member of child’s family has been involved in the child’s death, having tried to cover it up by falsely claiming their child had been abducted. We give some suggestions for further reading on this subject in Appendix 2 (page 56).
Last year (2007), for example, there was the case of two-year-old ‘Baby Grace’, whose body was found battered and decomposing in a plastic box on sand dunes near Galveston, on the Gulf Coast of the U.S.A. Eventually, DNA tests linked the body to parents in the U.S. who, months earlier, had told police that their baby had been abducted, sparking a massive nationwide search. Then there was the case of the dead baby found by police hidden in the attic of a couple’s home. Once again, the guilty parents had falsely claimed their baby had been abducted. ..."

She killed her two kids, was only given a sentence of 6 years and only had to serve 10 months????? Is it ok to murder your kids in Canada? What did they mean 'the death does not look to be suspicious. Does that mean her death was of natural causes, or was it suicide? If they don't know how she ended up under a bridge, I would say that was very suspicious.

The youngest was 10 months so she may have been able to use Post-partum depression and that may be why she was in a Psychiatric Hospital if she was medicated and stabilized she may have been given an early release... I don't know the case but I can say that Murder is very serious here. I am thinking that they are ruling her death a suicide and there may have been a note or id in her pocket as the report said they know it is her. Maybe she stopped her meds and did herself in!! Just saying....sitemama wrote:She killed her two kids, was only given a sentence of 6 years and only had to serve 10 months????? Is it ok to murder your kids in Canada? I looked up the story and it seems like the Crown did not present enough evidence and the woman should never have been given custody of the children because of past mental health issues! Sucks when people don't do their jobs and children are not protected. I argued with a co-worker once and almost was fired because I took a very harsh stand in a similar case... someone needs to pay the price for a childs death... if the mother is postpartum then the father, doctor ... I don't know who ... but someone should have to pay!!

(CBS/AP) NORTH CONWAY, N.H. - Police and family members continue searching for Abigail Hernandez, a North Conway, N.H., girl who went missing October 9. Her mother made an emotional plea Saturday, the girl's 15th birthday, asking the public for help.
The teen was last seen leaving Kennett High School around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Police say she made it home but when her mother returned later, Abigail was gone.
Local, state and federal agents have searched for Abigail by land, water and air. Police have meticulously combed four square miles on land, scoured parts of the Saco River and paddled over Pudding Pond.
According to CBS Boston, the FBI tracked Abigail's cell phone activity around the time she went missing. The Union Leader reports the final call on the teen's phone was made near Cranmore Mountain Resort, about two miles from her home.
Officials reportedly said the call was made four hours after the last sighting.

Story and vid:
Student Punished for Driving Drunk Friend Home
" ...Erin Cox was just trying to be a good friend when, two weeks ago, she drove to a party to pick up a girl who had called Cox asking for a ride because she had been drinking. But just after Cox got there, the police arrived. According to CBS Boston, the 17-year-old didn't end up in hot water with police—though they initially lumped her with a group of underage kids who were told they may have to appear in court for drinking, she ultimately didn't have to, and an officer acknowledged, in writing, that she had not been drinking and didn't have any alcohol on her. But her Massachusetts high school reacted a little differently. North Andover High told the senior honor student she had violated the district's zero-tolerance alcohol and drug policy, and as a result, she lost her role as captain of the volleyball team and was suspended for five games. ..."

I guess the principal would rather she had left her friends to drive drunk... and dead would have been the end result for someone. Right. Sometimes, peeps, thinking IS required in life and not aimlessly following someone's silly rules...
