Character witness for Jodi Arias pulls out, citing threats and inner turmoil

A woman who planned to testify as a character witness for Jodi Arias in a bid to spare her life decided Monday that she couldn’t go through with it, saying she had received death threats and was deeply conflicted about the case.

Lawyers for Arias, who was convicted earlier this month of the frenzied murder of an ex-lover, quickly asked for a mistrial in the sentencing phase on the grounds that a witness had been intimidated. The judge denied the request.

The potential witness, Patricia Womack, is a childhood friend of Arias who planned to testify about Arias’ abusive childhood. Besides the threats, she said that her heart went out to the family of Travis Alexander, whom Arias was convicted of killing.

“I couldn’t do it,” she told NBC News in an email. “I feel there is so much good in Jodi to be saved but then also someone’s dear life was taken.”

Justanopinion, I used a well known quote to say how she should go from MY life. I agree that SHE should really suffer. I just don't want to be part of it. I hope she disappears from the limelight immediately after getting the DP. Sorry I wasn't clear.

Glazier, my thoughts exactly about the mitigation expert. I posted earlier about it. What a waste. As for your being angry...I think that is the emotion that Jodi brings out in everyone. She brought it out even in Travis (his one e-mail). I try not to get that mad because it takes so much energy and SHE is not worth it. I am not successful every day but I sure try because I don't want her to sap my energy at all.

Because she and her attorneys know THIS jury will give her death. Period.

So they set up the drug using Patty to take the fall. They KNEW she would not withstand Juan. They could then pull this whole sham. Mistrials and withdrawals.

All strategy for either a new jury panel or for her appeals later.

The only slim chance in the future would be an appellate court commuting her sentence to life.

Well, I watched this whole video interview of Darryl Brewer and while he seems like a "nice" man, IMO he is living in a dream world, and is NOT telling the WHOLE TRUTH. Jodi had many problems with lying, manipulating, spying and stalking BEFORE SHE EVER GOT INVOLVED WITH BREWER. I don't believe that Jodi was quite the pollyanna that Darryl says she was. By her own admission, in her past she also had issues with her temper, hitting walls, etc., and I believe that Darryl had gotten a glimpse of that as well.
IF Darryl was so interested in testifying, why did the DEFENSE decide not to call him? IMO, there are secrets there that would not stand up well under cross examination.
At best, I feel this guy is and always has looked at Jodi through rose colored glasses. Classic case of love is blind.
I also feel that Jodi was NEVER passionate about Darryl, and was basically biding her time. As Dr. D. said, she needs to be in a relationship and to be the center of attention. I think Darryl was a convenience for her.
No matter what he may say, Jodi told co workers that she was not happy in her relationship with him OVER A YEAR BEFORE SHE EVER MET TRAVIS.
Darryl also says that they had "friends" who all loved Jodi. When asked why none of them were testifying, he said the defense "had never contacted them"! Preposterous tale.

Poor DB, he is deluded... and can not admit to himself that he was able to be snowed; manipulated; lied to... he was close to asking Hodi to marry him!! and I find it very strange that he wouldn't testify on camera but now he is all over the damn TV! Must be really tough for an old man like him to think he failed twice... so now he lies to himself!

Pianist, actually I should be the one who apologies... playing catch up leaves me with getting all the information in a short time and makes me agitated.. so when I vented using your post I should have been clearer and I apologize for that.. Yes I also want the media skank to disappear from the limelight as well. I enjoy reading your posts as you are very insightful and thought provoking.. What are the odds that JAA says nothing today. Crickets...with all the chaos yesterday, no mitigation, and a potential for blabby mcStabby to perhaps "zip it", what does that mean for appeals.

Someone upthread said that maybe in HER pea brain that she thinks her best chance is to take DP and then go for appeals. I'm beginning to think that is exactly what the strategy is....

In the article about DB it says something about an appeal issue when you can't put on a full mitigation phase like the Dt is saying they can't... Piece work doesn't count, it has to be a full picture and if you can't then there can be an appeal so I think that's KN's angle. I think JA will get up there just because she likes too be the center of attention but the Dt will tell her not to because it will be testimony and used against her next time around...

So they claim bias, unfair, prejudicial, boo hoo hoo....but is the legal aspect of this plan going to pass muster?

My understanding of the appeals process is that it is very very very difficult to get a conviction overturned, new trial, etc.

I was wondering what the mit. specialist actually did. Was it her job to provide DT with all sorts of things past and present that would give reasons to spare the life of JA? The fact that she could come up with NOTHING other that she can color within the lines is pitiful. ( I want that job) Will the jury try to come up with one (albeit not enough) reason to find a redeeming quality? I was thinking if I were in this position (just for speculation purposes mind you) who would be there for me. My parents are long gone. I have one sister, she would be there, neices, nephew, my kids, Pastor, friends....there is a list I can count on. I know I have some redeeming qualities (non of which is staying in the lines), how sad that she has No One who will come forward. Since she is calling the shots in this circus, you would think that she would want her mother at least to come forward. It is then that she could muster some real tears and it would be all about her. I suspect she is a bit afraid that mother would either knowingly or unknowinly throw her under the bus. No friends, siblings, Pastor, nobody. that speaks volumes.

I really don't think we have to worry about an overturned conviction for Jodi. She has the right not to call for any mitigation witnesses if she so chooses. She was checked out by the shrinks and the court did all the right things. She can't call foul on any of this.

from reading that DB article it made sense to me... JA's family is out of the picture, they have their reasons and aren't an option so we have to leave them out... There was no abuse and they aren't going to lie and say there was and live in the real world getting beat up about it... So with what they could get was Patti, DB and JA... That was they're 3 piece package. My understanding is by appeal rules they don't have to pick and choose their pieces because of upsets, if they can't do it all because something got out of control then it's a mistrial and that's KN's angle , all or nothing. KN seems to think several different things got to PW and that caused her to back out and one of those was JM being mean to her with the truth... Next is the death threats, if they're true then they happened after she would have testified. then came pleading the 5th which would have stopped her testimony anyway... so it seems she voided herself out... I think an appeal could would see it the same way... KN is taking a gamble because he has nothing to begin with so he has nothing to lose, he either wins JA another chance or she stays put... Given what they have to work with, I'm surprised they have anyone to speak in the mitigation phase for JA...

Since she is calling the shots in this circus, you would think that she would want her mother at least to come forward. It is then that she could muster some real tears and it would be all about her. I suspect she is a bit afraid that mother would either knowingly or unknowinly throw her under the bus. No friends, siblings, Pastor, nobody. that speaks volumes.

Does anyone think she will get up there and ask the jury to give her the death penalty with the idea being she is trying for reverse psychology? She really doesn't get normal thinking so I was wondering if she wants to be the contrite person who says she would prefer death than living any longer in this world.

I'm a control freak when it comes to my environment... very OCD like... TP has to be over not under, shampoo on the left, extra pillow case flap folded under (the list is HUGE)... these little things drive me crazy and i will take the time and make sure the things that bother me are correct where I am. I don't go in my kids bathroom or i'll die... lol... I feel stress, uneasy and closterphobic(?)... But you know what... If i was facing her future I think I might suck it up a little and just ask my Mom to be gentle about it... Cause guess what? Dr. D already let us know you have issues and we were told how you acted and saw what you did... we are not blind...

I do think Jodi will get up and speak today. I think that Kurt and JW did not want her to, and that is one reason for the motion asking the judge to allow them to withdraw.
I think Jodi will start speaking and ultimately it will degenerate into more blame being heaped on Travis. I think she will refer to him as 'her abuser' just as she did in the interview.
Jodi Arias is a liar to her core. I don't think she can stop herself from painting herself as the victim and even if it costs her her life I think she enjoys the satisfaction of stabbing Travis again metaphorically by trashing and re-trashing his reputation. In her twisted thinking, she sees this as she's winning a victory over mean terrible Travis who rejected her!
I think her defense team knows what is coming and are powerless to stop her.
She may have even reassured them saying she would only say certain things, but we know and THEY KNOW she is lying!

JM will probably have a copy of her script and will make a note every time she goes off and will question her on it...

I'm waiting for KN to request a mistrial on the grounds that is client is an idiot... and JSS would say you know legally I can't but personally I completely feel for you... lol
