You’d be forgiven for thinking that the lawyers making their case in the murder trial of Aaron Hernandez care more about what was on witnesses’ feet than what’s on their minds.

Matthew Kent, a runner who discovered the dead body of Odin Lloyd in an industrial park in June 2013, said he wore Nike sneakers. David Swithers, the president of a company near the crime scene, testified that he wore orthopedic shoes. North Attleborough police captain Joseph DiRenzo, who investigated the crime scene, said he wore both sneakers and boots.

The emphasis on footwear stems from footprints found at the industrial park where Lloyd, a 26-year-old semi-professional football player, was shot and killed in June 2013. Prosecutors say the footprints at the crime scene come from a pair of retro Nike Air Jordans worn by Hernandez, who is charged with orchestrating Lloyd’s murder in the remote area.

FALL RIVER — The judge presiding over the Aaron Hernandez murder trial has granted the prosecution's request to give his fiancee immunity to testify.
 
Judge E. Susan Garsh issued her order in Fall River Superior Court giving Shayanna Jenkins immunity from prosecution to testify against him, according to a court document made public today.

Prosecutors alleged she got rid of evidence after getting phone calls from Hernandez the day after the slaying of Odin Lloyd on June 17, 2013 in the North Attleboro Industrial Park.

The fiancée of Aaron Hernandez has been granted immunity from prosecution to testify against the former New England Patriots tight end at his murder trial..

A judge signed the immunity order Tuesday, ensuring that when Shayanna Jenkins is called to the witness stand she will not be able to invoke her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.

Prosecution documents detail Jenkins' actions the day after Lloyd's slaying, when she was seen on surveillance footage carrying a black trash bag that appeared to contain a heavy object out of the house, putting it in the trunk of her sister's car, and pulling out of the driveway. The court filings refer to cell phone records that indicate she drove to meet Ernest Wallace, Hernandez's "right-hand-man" from Bristol, who also faces a murder charge in the Lloyd case.

A day after Bristol County (Mass.) prosecutors granted immunity to Aaron Hernandez’s fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins, Jenkins was back at Bristol County Superior Court on Wednesday to continue her visible support of Hernandez. Jenkins’ courtroom behavior, which reportedly included exchanging smiles and giggles with Hernandez, is a preliminary indication that she will not cooperate with the government. Prosecutors believe that Hernandez ordered Jenkins to hide or destroy the .45-caliber Glock pistol allegedly used to kill Odin Lloyd. As explained last night in an SI.com legal analysis of Jenkins’ immunity, Jenkins is not obligated to testify merely because she has been granted immunity. However, she would likely face jail time if she refuses. If Jenkins testifies that Hernandez told her to get rid of the gun, Hernandez’s attorneys would need to dramatically revise their legal strategy. They are likely breathing a sigh of relief to see Jenkins back in court and smiling in the direction of Hernandez.
