George Zimmerman trial: Defense team makes its final pitch to jury, deliberations could begin today

11:33 AM, July 12, 2013

SANFORD, FLA. — George Zimmerman's defense attorney began his final arguments Friday, telling jurors he will show them the neighborhood watch volunteer's "pure, unadulterated innocence" of second-degree murder when he fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Attorney Mark O'Mara told jurors the burden was on prosecutors, and he said they hadn't proven Zimmerman's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. O'Mara said prosecutors built a case on a series hypothetical "could've beens" and "maybes."

"If it hasn't been proven, it's not just there," O'Mara said. "You can't fill in the gaps. You can't connect the dots. You're not allowed to."

O'Mara just told the jury, "If Trayvon would have been shot through the heart, and would have survived, what do you think he would have been charged with? Aggravated assault, aggravated battery?"......

George Zimmerman Defense: Trayvon Wasn’t Injured, ‘Except for the Gunshot’

Jul 12, 2013 11:23 AM EDT

A dramatic video re-enactment, four minutes of silence, and a tribute to Thomas Jefferson. Jacqui Goddard on the George Zimmerman team’s final pitch before the trial goes to the jury.

Jurors were shown a video re-enactment of the fight that ended in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin on Friday as George Zimmerman’s lawyer blamed the teenage victim for having started the violent confrontation that led to his own death.

During the closing speech by defense counsel Mark O’Mara at the end of the three-week trial in Sanford, Florida, the court sat through four minutes of silence as he demonstrated the length of time that he says Martin would have been free to run from the armed neighborhood watch volunteer after the two came face to face on the night of February 26, 2012.

“The reality of what happened is very straightforward, and it proves absolute innocence, because for four minutes Trayvon Martin did something that led to his confronting George Zimmerman,” said O’Mara. Not that he was suggesting that Martin “did something bad,” he said, but “I’m not going to allow you or the state to ignore the realities of what happened that night.”

That reality, he said, was that Zimmerman came away with injuries that proved his story; that Martin punched him on the nose and then dragged him to the ground, wrestled and pummeled him until he was left with no option but to shoot in self-defense.

George Zimmerman Closing Prompts Trayvon Martin's Mother to Leave Courtroom

By SENI TIENABESO and MATT GUTMAN
SANFORD, Fla., July 12, 2013

George Zimmerman's attorney implored the all female jury today to acquit his client, calmly assuring them Zimmerman acted in self defense when he shot and killed Trayvon Martin.

"You want to take away somebody's liberty? They've got to prove their case. The burden is on the state," said Zimmerman's lawyer Mark O'Mara

In a closing argument that was markedly more understated than the state's fiery presentation on Thursday, O'Mara scoffed at the prosecution's claims that Zimmerman lied and was a wannabe cop who profiled Martin, 17, to be a criminal.

O'Mara punctuated his critique of the prosecution's case by repeatedly exclaiming, "Really? Really?"

"I don't think you should connect any dots at all. If the decision is made by the state to present additional evidence do not presume, do not assume, do not give anyone the benefit of doubt besides George Zimmerman," O'Mara said.

Towards the end of his more than two hour long closing argument, O'Mara held up a photo of Martin's lifeless body. It prompted Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, to get up and leave the courtroom.

Prosecution gives rebuttal in George Zimmerman trial; defense says case is full of gaps

By Associated Press, Published: July 12, 2013

~Snipped~

Prosecutor John Guy followed with a rebuttal, accusing Zimmerman of telling “so many lies.” He said Martin’s last feeling was fear.

“Isn’t that every child’s worst nightmare, to be followed on the way home in the dark by a stranger,” Guy said. “Isn’t that every child’s worst fear?”

Defense delivers closing statements in George Zimmerman trial: ‘Not guilty of anything but protecting his own life’

Attorney Mark O’Mara says prosecution has failed to prove Zimmerman, who fatally shot Trayvon Martin, didn’t act in self-defense and blamed Martin for the violence.

Defense counsel Mark O'Mara has George Zimmerman stand in the courtroom for the jury during closing arguments. “We know he had the opportunity to go home, and he didn't do that,” O’Mara said of Martin.

George Zimmerman’s lawyer said Friday that the neighborhood watchman is “not guilty of anything but protecting his own life.”

Attorney Mark O’Mara blamed the shooting victim, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, for sowing the seeds of his own destruction.

“Somebody decided that they were angry — that it wasn't over with the running,” he said. “We know he had the opportunity to go home, and he didn't do that. The person who decided to make the night violent was the guy who didn't go home when he had the chance.”

There were four minutes from the moment Zimmerman reported to a Florida police dispatcher that Martin was “running” through the development to the moment when a resident called 911 to report a fight in progress, O’Mara said.

"Guy said Zimmerman violated the cornerstone of neighborhood watch volunteer programs, which is to observe and report, not follow a suspect.

Zimmerman's account of how he grabbed his gun from his holster at his waist as Martin straddled him is physically impossible, Guy said.

"The defendant didn't shoot Trayvon Martin because he had to, he shot him because he wanted to," Guy said. "That's the bottom line."

One juror, a young woman, appeared to wipe away a tear as Guy said nothing would ever bring back Martin.

The six jurors could begin deliberating Friday. Because there were no eyewitnesses, the panel of six women will likely rely heavily on testimony - which was often conflicting - from police, neighbors, friends and family members. They will have to decide if they can determine who was yelling for help on a 911 call that recorded the shooting, and whether Zimmerman was a wannabe cop who took the law into his own hands or someone who was in a fight for his life, with his head being repeatedly slammed into the ground."

Bill Sheaffer:
GuestHomey: yes the judge has a range of penalties if it's manslaughter. 2nd degree murder is mandatory life. Manslaughter could be 15, 30 with a firearm, 25 to life with the 10-20-life.
So the least would be 15 years.. but the jury will decide the "enhancements".

'This case is not about race, it's about right and wrong': Prosecution make their final case against George Zimmerman before jury decides his fate

. Defense attorney Mark O'Mara tells jury he will prove Zimmerman is completely innocent of any crime
. Explains in detail what 'beyond a reasonable doubt' means
. Had the court sit in silence for four minutes to show the gap in the timeline, four minutes that Trayvon Martin had to 'plan'
. Jury will start deliberations today
. John Guy delivered an impassioned and powerful rebuttal
'This case isn't about standing your ground. It's about staying in your car'

The prosecution made a last-ditch and impassioned attempt to convince the jury in George Zimmerman's second-degree murder trial of his guilt, pleading with the six women to 'look into the heart of that grown man and the heart of that child'.

John Guy delivered his powerful rebuttal after the defense's lengthy and methodical closing argument, which painted Zimmerman as a completely innocent man, guilty only of protecting his own life.

He began by appealing to the emotions of the female jurors and he ended by addressing what has been at the heart of the case since Trayvon Martin was shot. Race.

'This case is not about race, it is about right and wrong.

'Trayvon Martin was a son, a brother and a friend and the last thing he did on this earth was to try to get home.'

Zimmerman case in hands of jury, after lawyers make final pleas

Published July 12, 2013 / FoxNews.com

George Zimmerman -- Trial for the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin --June 10, 2013 - Page 10 Reporter_keating_071213

George Zimmerman's fate rests in the hands of the Florida jury of six women, following closing arguments, in which his attorney portrayed him as a neighborhood activist who shot Trayvon Martin in self-defense and prosecutors attempted to paint him as a wannabe cop whose misguided suspicion about the teen resulted in death.

Jurors, who will deliberate through the weekend if necessary, can acquit the 29-year-old neighborhood watch volunteer or convict him of either second-degree murder or manslaughter in the death of the 17-year-old Martin. Zimmerman shot Martin as the two fought following a confrontation in the gated Sanford community where Zimmerman lives.

Earlier, Zimmerman defense attorney Mark O'Mara urged jurors to let the Florida neighborhood watch volunteer "get back to his life" by finding him not guilty of murder or manslaughter in the 2012 confrontation that ended in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, saying the state prove Zimmerman did anything other than defend himself.

I spose I could ask, Did GZ PROVE his case when he took away the life of Trayvon Martin? Where are HIS advocates? Where are HIS appeals?

Mr. West, you are correct: It is NOT " fair" but the unfairness does NOT pertain to your client but to the victim.

Trayvon was a normal kid. Messing around in school sometimes - but he was getting disciplined at home for it.

he had parents who LOVED him - in the VERB sense.

They taught him right - and didn't ignore him or leave him to the streets to figure out life.

Trayvon Benjamin Martin would have NEVER shut his mother's electricity off if he didn't like what she had to say.

Six women to decide Zimmerman's fate

By James Novogrod and Tom Winter, NBC News[/size]

George Zimmerman's fate is in the hands of the jury, six women who must decide whether the former neighborhood watchman committed a crime in fatally shooting 17-year-old Trayvon Martin or that he acted in self-defense.

~Snipped~

Here is what we know about the six women who began deliberations Friday:

Juror B-29: Originally from Chicago, she's been married for 10 years. The woman — who is either black or Hispanic and is the only juror who isn't white, according to prosecutors — has eight kids, one of them older than 18. This is her first time serving on a jury. The woman has been at her current job for three months, and when asked by prosecutor Bernie De La Rionda during jury selection if she belonged to any organization, she said "my house is my organization," eliciting laughter and understanding from the courtroom.

Juror B-76: A resident of the Sanford, Fla., area since 1975, she has two adult children. During voir dire she said her 28-year-old son is an attorney who practices in the county, but his specialty is foreclosures, divorces and contract law and he does not practice criminal law. Her daughter is a certified nursing assistant. This juror is unemployed after running a construction company for 15 years with her husband. She and her husband manage rental properties and are helping their kids build homes. Her passion is rescuing animals, and this is her first time on a jury.

Juror B-37: A local for 18 years, and the daughter of an Air Force captain, she has been working for the same company for 16 years. Her husband is a "space attorney," meaning he has worked with the shuttle companies and is now working with rocket companies. One of her kids, a 24-year-old, is a pet groomer and the other is a 27-year-old student at the University of Central Florida. She likes animals and rescued them until her husband told her, "Stop!" She has been called to serve on a jury four times, but said she was never seated because of "where I work."

Juror B-51: She's served on juries before, once as an alternate in the early 1990s, and again three years ago in Seminole County. She is unmarried and does not have kids. Now retired, she previously worked as a real estate agent. She was also the director of a call center with 1,200 employees under her. Asked by the prosecutor how she handled disputes in the workplace, she said, "You have to listen to all sides, and sometimes you just have to make the tough calls." A transplant from Atlanta, she has lived locally for nine years.

Juror E-6: A native Floridian, she has lived locally for two years. She has been married for six years and has two children, ages 11 and 13, and said she was proud to be raising them. She said said she was proud to be a member of a church. She is unemployed after being in school for nine months and working in financial services. Her husband is an engineer. She acknowledged that she was arrested in 1999 and told the court she was treated fairly, saying, "I deserved it." She has never served on a jury.

Juror E-40: She moved to the area from Iowa eight months ago. She is married to a chemical engineer and has one son, who lives in Western Pennsylvania. She told the court that in her spare time she likes to watch football, read and travel. She has worked as a safety officer, and served as a juror 20 years ago on a drug case in Pennsylvania. No verdict was reached in that case.

Also could someone here please post when they hear a verdict has been reached? I can't take the crap being said on tv anymore..frankly I am sickened beyond belief by how many people have shown their true hearts with the things they choose to say about this case...Geraldo was once a fav of mine a very long time ago but it is crystal clear that somewhere along the way he sold his soul to the devil.

JURY VERDICT WATCH

****
Jury sent a request for a list.
I believe this is an evidence list to help them identify evidence.
Judge and attys are reviewing the list prior to giving it to the  jury.

Comment From Logic and Truth
Disregard race at this moment. When someone (wrongful and unlawful) pursues another, with a gun, there most certainly is intent to harm. And he did. George Zimmerman wanted there to be conflict. Otherwise, he would have listened to the police correspondent.

dunno why they even need to study all the evidence again..it's fairly simple really..Did GZ get out of his truck and go around the back of them houses in the dark for the purpose of finding an address or TM?

IMO since he was a long time resident of that neighborhood he knew good and well there were no addresses to be found on the BACKSIDE of any one of them units.

You are absolutely right Carla. I live in a complex that has 3 streets, beside the main one at the entrance and I know the name of each one of them. I also can figure out the apt numbers, even from the back side, where there are no numbers displayed.

I've lived here on and off for 51 years and couldn't tell you the address of the house next door, which faces the other street. I would have to go around the corner to find out. Are you going to demand that I "Go Away" for speaking the truth? Nice......really nice. I guess the site rules about attacking folks don't apply to the RC clique.

Most cities have even number on one side of street and odd numbers on the other.

Beginning near the central point of the community are the lower numbers. As new housing is added, the numbers usually grow larger away from the older numbers, the "down town" area.

There are usually several "baselines" in a city.
Find the major streets and learn their numbers.

It can be interesting to explore the enumeration of a city.
Take a child along and it makes it fun to learn.

BTW, having done NW for many years, knowing the names of streets and the numbering patterns is almost expected as part of the duties. How else does one request assistance if not knowing where to send the help?

Knowing where the city/county/state roads and respective authorities is important for quality service.

Florida on alert as George Zimmerman ‘vigilante’ trial ends

Florida authorities were bracing themselves for disturbances as the trial of a Neighbourhood Watch volunteer who shot dead an unarmed black teenager drew towards its conclusion yesterday.

George Zimmerman’s lawyer implored the all-female jury to acquit his client, assuring them that he had acted in self defence when he killed Trayvon Martin. “You want to take away somebody’s liberty? They’ve got to prove their case. The burden is on the state,” said Mr Zimmerman’s lawyer Mark O’Mara.

Brandy's townhouse is located near the back entrance, Trayvon could have accessed the house  through the common backyard area.

Sorry- he was standing at the FRONT of houses where he could see address numbers everywhere (!!!) when he left to walk (towards Trayvon) two blocks away from his car - to a place with equally visible numbers where DID NOT STAY TO MEET THE POLICE- so he had NO REASON to GET THAT ADDRESS!! He already told cops to call him when they got there- he had no intention of sticking to one spot or giving cops that address.

Who did he fool with that one?

I'm not going to argue with you. I thought his explanation of going to look at numbers sounded confusing anyhow, but my point was that Z said the Front not the Back aka he never said he was getting numbers from the Back of apts regardless to if his story made any sense.

" 10 WTF moments in Mark O'Maras closing statement

Today marked the last day of the George Zimmerman murder trial.

Defense attorney Mark O'Mara presented his closing statements to the jury for more than three hours on Friday morning, working to convince the six jurors and four alternates that Zimmerman acted in self-defense, not ill-will and hatred.

But what was supposed to be a closing statement about Zimmerman's innocence ended up being a drawn-out lesson on law.

"You don't know how to apply a standard of reasonable doubt. Lawyers do, but jurors do not," O'Mara said.

After telling the jurors to be careful with their common sense, he told them not to make assumptions about the case. Then he quoted Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, telling the jurors that they were now living the constitution.

"This is a solemn matter...this is a serious serious matter for Mr. Zimmerman," he said, explaining to the jurors that the defendant's life was in their hands.

But, as is his job, O'Mara did pull evidence for the jurors to use in their deliberation and ended with:

"If you have a reasonable doubt as to whether George Zimmerman was justified in the use of deadly force, he's not guilty," O'Mara said.

However, that seemingly sane comment didn't come without some WTF moments during his statement. Here are the other comments that made us scratch our heads.

- After presenting the jury with a huge slab of concrete: "That is not an unarmed teenager with a bag of Skittles trying to get home."

- On Zimmerman's "asshole" comment: "He cursed towards those people" who burglarized the neighborhood.

- On Zimmerman running after Trayvon during the non-emergency 911 call: "The wind was up..." which caused the sounds in the phone.

- "I want to address some assumptions," O'Mara says about the crime scene computer animation. He said this just moments after he told the jury not to make any assumptions.

- "The only one that was injured at all, except for the gunshot was George Zimmerman."

- "Why didn't Trayvon Martin just go home?"

- On Trayvon Martin: "The guy who didn't go home when he had the chance" was the person who decided to make the encounter violent.

- When discussing the four minute gap of time, O'Mara says, "It was the guy who decided to lie in wait, I guess plan his move...it seems."

- On killing the teenager: "What other options did George Zimmerman have? None."

- After showing jurors a photograph of how dark it was on the night of the shooting, O'Mara tells jurors that Trayvon Martin stalked and planned to pounce on Zimmerman. "

15 Powerful Moments in John Guy's rebuttal statement

Today we heard the last of the closing arguments in the George Zimmerman murder trial.

After defense attorney Mark O'Mara gave his closing statements, prosecution lawyer John Guy approached the jury to present his emotional rebuttal.

"The human heart, it has a great many functions," Guy started. "But is not the most important purpose, is what it causes us to do."

He continued, striking down many of O'Mara's previous statements that Zimmerman is innocent and was acting in self defense.

"What was in Trayvon Martin's heart?" Guy said. "Fear."

Here are the 15 most powerful statements in Guy's rebuttal:

- "Isn't that every child's worst nightmare, to be followed on the way home in the dark by a stranger?"

- On Zimmerman exhibiting ill-will & hatred with his "assholes" and "fucking punks" comment: "If there was a window into that man's soul, it were the words that came out of his mouth."

- "If he [Zimmerman] really wanted the police to get Trayvon Martin, he would have stayed in his car...and waited for the police."

- "Trayvon Martin may not have defendant's blood on his hands but George Zimmerman will always have Trayvon's blood on his hands forever"

- "Four minutes is not the amount of time that Trayvon had to run home, four minutes was the amount of time Trayvon had left on this earth."

- On Trayvon Martin walking to his father's house: "That child had every right to do what he was doing...and did that child not have the right to defend himself from this strange man?

- "The defendant didn't shoot Trayvon Martin cause he had to, he shot Trayvon Martin because he wanted to."

- Guy on the position of Trayvon Martin and Zimmerman: "If Trayvon Martin was mounted on defendant he wouldn't have been able to pull out his gun. It's a physical impossibility."

- On Trayvon Martin allegedly holding his hands over Zimmerman's bloody nose and mouth: "Do you really think if that were true there wouldn't be Zimmerman's blood" on fingernail scraps. "That was a lie."

- "If Trayvon was the one on the hunt, would he still have been on his cell phone? Would his earbuds still be in his ears?"

- "In the end, this case is not about standing your ground, it is about staying in your car."

- "It's physically impossible that Trayvon ran behind those homes, came back and circled his car. Why did Zimmerman lie?"

- "To the living we owe respect, and to the dead we owe the truth."

- After showing the lifeless body of Trayvon Martin: "If there's an issue of who lost the fight? Ask yourself who lost the fight?"

- "Verdict is not going to bring Trayvon Benjamin Martin back. Your verdict is not going to change the past. But it will forever define it"
