CBS/AP) CAMPO, Calif. - An Amber Alert was in effect early Tuesday for the two missing children of a woman whose body was found inside a burned rural house near the U.S.-Mexico border, and authorities said the man suspected of killing the woman may have abducted the kids.

Authorities are trying to locate Hannah Anderson, 16, and Ethan Anderson, 8, whose mother, Christina Anderson, 44, was one of two people found dead by authorities sent to extinguish the fire Sunday night, a San Diego County sheriff's statement said.

The body of Christina Anderson and a dog where found in the house while the the body of a child was found in the rubble of the house's detached garage. The identity and manner of death of the child remained undetermined. Authorities who released the news of the deaths Monday night wouldn't say whether the body may have belonged to one of Anderson's children.

A San Diego man is the subject of a nationwide manhunt, the suspect in a double murder and double kidnapping.

Neighbors of James Lee DiMaggio were shocked to learn two people as well as a dog were found dead inside DiMaggio’s log-cabin style home Monday.

Ethan Anderson and Hannah Anderson, both siblings, were still missing on Wednesday–a day after an Amber Alert was activated across California. San Diego County authorities said they may have been abducted by a Boulevard, Calif., man who is a suspect in their mother’s death.

Officials said that James Lee DiMaggio, 40, is heading to Canada or Texas. The body of his neighbor Christina Anderson, 44, was found in his burned-down house.

Brett Anderson, the father of the two children and husband to Christina Anderson, sent a message to DiMaggio. “I can’t fathom what you were thinking. … Let my daughter go, you’ve taken everything else,” he said.

LAKESIDE, Calif. (AP) — A man suspected of abducting a 16-year-old girl told her he had a crush on her and would date her if they were the same age, a friend of the girl said Wednesday as police searched for the man who is also wanted in the death of the girl's mother and possibly her 8-year-old brother.

James Lee DiMaggio explained that he didn't want the girls to think he was weird in an effort to defend himself after noticing they exchanged glances, 15-year-old Marissa Chavez said. She said he spoke while driving them home from a high school gymnastics meet a couple months ago.

Hannah Anderson asked Chavez to join her from then on whenever DiMaggio, 40, drove her to meets.

"She was a little creeped out by it. She didn't want to be alone with him," Chavez said.

Anna Kooiman updated us this morning on the manhunt in southern California for at least one child and suspected kidnapper, James Lee DiMaggio. Hannah Anderson, 16, and her 8-year-old brother, Ethan, are missing after their mother, Christina Anderson, was found dead at DiMaggio's burned-out home in a rural area 65 miles east of San Diego.

A child's body was also recovered, but further tests are needed to determine whether it is Ethan Anderson.

The father of the two children, Brett Anderson, tried to relay a message to his teenage daughter.

“Hannah, we all love you very much. If you have a chance, you take it. You run. You’ll be found."

Oregon state police said there was a possible sighting of James Lee DiMaggio's blue Nissan Versa in northeast California near Alturas on Wednesday, followed by another about 50 miles along the same highway near Lakeview, in south-central Oregon.
Investigators have said DiMaggio may be headed to Texas or Canada with 16-year-old Hannah Anderson and possibly her 8-year-old brother, Ethan, though investigators said a charred body discovered along with the mother could be the boy.

Gore says the vehicle identification number of the car matched the one police are looking for. It was found near a trailhead covered by brush about six miles from Cascade at 9 a.m. Friday. The pair was spotted about six miles away from where the car was found. They were wearing backpacks and appeared to be camping in the area. The girl's brother, 8-year-old Ethan, was not seen with the pair.

The car must now be assessed for safety because of concerns DiMaggio may have booby-trapped the vehicle with explosives.

Since the Amber Alert had not been activated in Idaho at the time, the riders didn't report it. Once the Amber Alert went into effect Friday, witnesses contacted police immediately.

"As far as we know, it didn't look like she was being held against her will," said Gore.

Gore said DiMaggio had recently bought camping equipment and investigators say evidence suggests he may have planned this, but at this point it's speculation.

Numerous officers from local, state and federal law enforcement agencies have converged upon the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness area, which is very remote and is not easily accessible.

Law enforcement teams are stationed at multiple access points around the wilderness area to monitor people coming and going from the area.

Earlier today, an Amber Alert was issued in Idaho for two abducted children from California.

(CNN) -- The national manhunt for California Amber Alert suspect James DiMaggio and his alleged 16-year-old captive girl has moved to the Idaho wilderness after horseback riders saw a man and a girl fitting their description, authorities said Friday.

Investigators subsequently found DiMaggio's car hidden by brush, with its license plates removed, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore told reporters. Authorities confirmed the car's ownership by its vehicle identification number, he said.

The vehicle was located in the remote River of No Return Wilderness area in Cascade, Idaho, Ada County sheriff's spokeswoman Andrea Dearden said.

Not aware of the manhunt at the time, the campers and hikers on horseback saw the man and girl Wednesday, but they called police after they saw news account that evening, police said.

"It is a wilderness and extremely difficult terrain to navigate," Gore said.

The Idaho wilderness where a group of horseback riders believe they encountered Amber Alert suspect James Lee DiMaggio and 16-year-old Hannah Anderson is 'extremely rugged' and unforgiving, said one longtime wilderness guide.

Cheryl Bransford, 62, operates out of Ya-Hoo Corrals at Payette Lake, north of Cascade, near where authorities found DiMaggio's abandoned blue Nissan Versa.

A group of people on horseback told local authorities they spoke to two people believed to be DiMaggio and Anderson on Wednesday morning. After they notified authorities, the search intensified in that area.

The vehicle was found about 8 a.m. Friday and was covered in brush, Gore said. The license plates had been removed.

Bransford, who's been leading groups of riders into the backcountry of Valley County in Idaho since 1978 -- described the terrain as very steep, with areas of "almost jungle-like" thick vegetation. "It is extremely rugged," she said.

The River of No Return Wilderness contains more than 2 million acres of federally-designated land, marked by rivers, deep canyons and rugged mountains.

Asked whether she thought the pair, led by DiMaggio, who officials describe as an avid outdoorsman -- could make it for any extended period in the backcountry, Bransford said it could be done "if you had the right skills." Especially if DiMaggio had a gun for killing game, the knowledge to track down fresh water and ability to start a fire, Bransford said. Overnight temperatures this time of year typically hover in the high-40s, she added.

Local, state and federal authorities, including the FBI, Idaho State Police, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Marshals and Valley and Ada county sheriff's offices, are helping with the search, San Diego authorities said. Mike Milne, spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said agents were focusing on outbound vehicles from the U.S. at the two crossings on the Canadian border, which he said were 200 miles from where DiMaggio's car was found.

But assuming the pair hadn't found another mode of transport, they would probably stick to a trail, Bransford said. And with ample water, they could easily hike 10 to 15 miles a day, she added.

Along the way, DiMaggio and Hannah Anderson would also probably encounter vacation lodges or outfitting posts, where they would have access to food and other supplies, she said.

The second body is so badly burned that carrying out a DNA test is proving difficult, authorities said. The sheriff's office is treating Ethan as a missing person until they can identify the body.

A search of DiMaggio's burned-down house led law enforcement to this conclusion: "We don't hold anything past this person," as one official put it.

"We think that he's capable of anything at this point," said Capt. Duncan Fraser of the San Diego Sheriff's Office.

I speculate...
Could the perp, when he had Hannah over for the few days prior to her missing and the deaths in the burned out home...
Could he have told her he had planned a "surprise" special camping trip for her?

When the mother went to the home to get her dau, could she have been greeted with a note telling her to wait, they would be right back?

Could he have rigged the house to explode using a timer so he was long gone when it blew/burnt?

I am hopeful we get some answers. Right now, I will settle for the safe return of Hannah..

A California murder suspect and his 16-year-old kidnap victim have been spotted hiking together deep in the wilderness of the Idaho mountains - 1,000 miles from his San Diego County home where the teen's mother and little brother were found dead.

Police in San Diego revealed today that two riders on horseback believe they saw James DiMaggio and Hannah Anderson in the rugged 'River of No Return Wilderness' outside Cascade, Idaho, on Wednesday.

Hannah appeared healthy and safe, leading San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore to conclude: 'As far as we know, it didn't appear she was being held against her will.'

DiMaggio's Nissa Versa car was found this morning in a remote, hard-to-reach area. It was covered in brush in an attempt to conceal it and its license plates were removed.

Sheriff confirms that California murder suspect James DiMaggio is dead and his 16-year-old kidnapping victim Hannah Anderson is safe.

California murder and kidnapping suspect James DiMaggio has been killed and teen Hannah Anderson is safe, San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore said at a press conference.

DiMaggio was shot and killed by an FBI tactical agent assigned to a FBI headquarters unit at the north end of Morehead Lake in Idaho at 4:22 p.m. PST. Hannah was with DiMaggio and was rescued safely.

"It truly was a joint effort and I am pleased to stand here today and say that Hannah was successfully rescued and appears to be in pretty good shape," Gore says.

Hannah's father was notified. "Obviously he's elated that we found his daughter is alive and plans are being made now to reunite him with his daughter hopefully tomorrow morning," Gore says. "He was very relieved and very excited and looking forward to being reunited with his daughter."

DiMaggio's car was found Friday morning about 40 miles east of the tiny town of Cascade, parked where the dirt road ends and the Sand Creek trailhead enters the wilderness area.

Detectives with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department finished searching DiMaggio's car Saturday afternoon. They had the vehicle towed to a garage in Cascade for further processing.

The discovery of the car came about two days after a horseback rider reported seeing the man and girl hiking in the area. Ada County Sheriff's department spokeswoman Andrea Dearden, who is helping the Valley County sheriff's department handle the case, said the rider didn't realize the pair were being sought until he got home and recognized them in news reports.

"Hannah is safe and that was our first priority from the beginning," Valley County Sheriff Patti Bolen told reporters at a press conference held Saturday evening outside the Cascade Fire Department.

A few hours later, Brett Anderson, Hannah's father, told Geraldo Rivera on Fox News that he planned to come to Idaho Sunday and be reunited with his daughter.

Many details of the rescue and shooting remained unclear Saturday, pending a review of the shooting by an FBI team from Washington state.

FBI agents in either a plane or a helicopter spotted James DiMaggio and Hannah Anderson near Morehead Lake at about 5:20 p.m., according to officials in Cascade. But San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore said DiMaggio and Anderson were spotted Saturday morning by three members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.

DiMaggio and Hannah were only a short distance from where the pair were spotted Wednesday afternoon by a Gem County man riding his horse in the wilderness.

Same here.  Thank goodness the horseback rider checked out the news when he got home and recognized them.  That seemed to be the tip that law enforcement needed.

Yep, the fact that he created a situation that would culminate in his death on the day of his father's suicide sounds suspiciously like something he was hoping for.

Jim Hass, who has served as Cascade's fire chief for 37 years, was one who believed DiMaggio and Hannah could not have gotten far. "It's rough, rocky, steep terrain," Hass said Saturday from inside the Cascade Fire Department station. "It's not for the faint of heart or a day backpacker."

The Frank Church is filled with steep, rugged mountains, gorges deeper than the Grand Canyon, and a pair of rivers that attract white- water enthusiasts from across the country.

"You have to be physically fit. There's a lot of up and down," Hass said.

In town, the Cascade Airport sits at an elevation of 4,734 feet. Hikers through the wilderness climb peaks that reach 9,000 feet. "Five miles would take all day," Hass said.

Carol Arnold is co-owner of Cascade-based Arnold Aviation, which has flown through the wilderness for 40 years ferrying recreation enthusiasts and delivering groceries, fuel, building supplies and mail. She said anyone camping there would run out of food quickly.

She wondered whether DiMaggio had scoped out the land ahead of time. "It's hard to think that anyone just wandered into an area like that," Arnold said.

DiMaggio's car was found Friday morning about 40 miles east of the tiny town of Cascade, parked where the dirt road ends and the Sand Creek trailhead enters the wilderness area.

Detectives with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department finished searching DiMaggio's car Saturday afternoon. They had the vehicle towed to a garage in Cascade for further processing.

The discovery of the car came about two days after a horseback rider reported seeing the man and girl hiking in the area. Ada County Sheriff's department spokeswoman Andrea Dearden, who is helping the Valley County sheriff's department handle the case, said the rider didn't realize the pair were being sought until he got home and recognized them in news reports.

The suspect knew the family for over 16 years--- had known the teen girl since the day she was born. He was called "Uncle Jim" by the children.

Suspect's home was being repossessed. May explain the despondency and the burnt out home.

Suspect was employed at Scripps in La Jolla. That is not shabby employment, IMO.
