State, local, and federal authorities are searching for a 14-year-old girl who disappeared two days ago near her high school in Conway, N.H.
Abigail Hernandez was last seen around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday near Kennett High School, according to the FBI, which is participating in the search.
“We are here for one reason: to find Abby,” said Associate New Hampshire Attorney General Jane Young at a news conference this afternoon. “We are trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together. … We are coming together to find this little girl.”
Hernandez was last seen wearing black leggings/yoga pants, a gray-striped, multi-colored sweater, and black leather boots, according to information posted by the FBI on its website. She is 5-foot-4 and weighs 118 pounds, with long brown hair and brown eyes.
Young said Hernandez went to school Wednesday and there were “some indications” she went home afterward. Investigators, who are searching from the air, on land, and on water are focusing on the path she took home, Young said.

Kieran Ramsey, the assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s New Hampshire office, said the FBI’s Child Abduction Rapid Deployment Team was working on the case, along with other FBI units, with agents arriving from as far away as Virginia.
He urged the public to send in tips to the 1-800-CALL-FBI tip line or submit them online at www.tips.fbi.gov.

Mom Pleads for Missing Daughter's Return
NORTH CONWAY, N.H., Oct. 13, 2013
By MICHELE McPHEE
Four days after Abigail Hernandez vanished after school in picturesque Conway, her mother wished her missing daughter a happy 15th birthday through tears as she pleaded for information about the teen's disappearance.
"Happy Birthday Abi,'' Zenya Hernandez said in front of the Conway police headquarters where the intensive search for her daughter is being orchestrated.
Hernandez's voice shook as she looked at a bank of reporters' cameras and delivered a message directly to her daughter: "Please come home. We miss you so badly."
~Snipped~
The FBI is now leading the search for the teen -- last seen wearing black yoga pants and a gray sweatshirt -- which has been conducted by air, over rough wooded terrain, and in the nearby Sacco River.
On Saturday dozens of searchers "line-searched" the woods around Cranmore Mountain ski resort, which involved shoulder-to-shoulder police officers navigating four square miles of mountainous terrain, said Major Kevin Jordan of the Maine Fish and Game department.
Jordan said police hovered overhead with a Massachusetts State Police helicopter and a borrowed FBI fixed-wing aircraft as part of the search and have combed more than 1,000 acres of wilderness on foot. There has been no sign of Hernandez, but searchers did recover human remains belonging to another person reported missing "years ago," Jordan told reporters.
"We are nowhere near done," Jordan said. "We are here to find Abi and to bring her home."

Abigail Hernandez Missing: Authorities and family members searching for N.H. teen missing five days
October 14, 2013 2:20 PM
By Iris Carreras
(CBS/AP) NORTH CONWAY, N.H. - Police and family members continue searching for Abigail Hernandez, a North Conway, N.H., girl who went missing October 9. Her mother made an emotional plea Saturday, the girl's 15th birthday, asking the public for help.
The teen was last seen leaving Kennett High School around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Police say she made it home but when her mother returned later, Abigail was gone.
~Snipped~
Local, state and federal agents have searched for Abigail by land, water and air. Police have meticulously combed four square miles on land, scoured parts of the Saco River and paddled over Pudding Pond.
The medical examiner was called twice to the scene on Saturday but neither time was related to Abigail's disappearance: One was for a hiker who died Saturday and another was after the discovery of human bone fragments from several years ago, police said.

Many resources being employed to help find Hernandez

CONWAY — As of Wednesday, Abigail Hernandez topped the FBI's list of "kidnappings and missing persons," which contains about 70 names.
Hernandez, a Kennett High freshman, was reported missing at 7:17 p.m. on Oct. 9. She was last seen around 2:30 p.m. leaving school, but when her family arrived home that evening she wasn't there. She is described by police as a white girl of Hispanic descent with brown hair, brown eyes and light olive complexion, 5-foot 4-inches tall, 118-pounds.
FBI special agent and spokesman Greg Comcowich, who works out of the FBI's Boston office, said in his experience names are put on that list in the order they are received. The list does appear to be in rough chronological order. The case directly below Hernandez involves a young girl named Aliayah Lunsford who disappeared in late 2011. Another person near the top of the list, Alexis Tiara Murphy, was last seen in Virginia in August.
Normally, the most recent (case) goes right on top." said Comcowich.
Employees at the FBI had to work around furloughs caused by the federal shutdown in order to put Hernandez on the online list. The FBI's list labels Hernandez as a "missing person."
"Regardless of the furlough, we made a special effort to make sure we got it done," said Comcowich.

1 week later, still no sign of missing N.H. teen
Officials are seeking help in finding 15-year-old Abigail Hernandez’s cellphone
By Derek J. Anderson | Globe Correspondent October 16, 2013
After eight days of searching and more than 500 tips, investigators are still looking for a 15-year-old girl who disappeared in Conway, N.H, and they are now asking the public to be on the lookout for her cellphone.
“Day eight in our search for Abigail Hernandez,” said Kieran Ramsey, an FBI special agent, during a press conference in Conway Wednesday evening. “Day eight in our plea to the community of Conway and the viewing public to help us with any information that could help us locate Abigail. Day eight in our hopes for Abby’s mom, Abby’s sister, and other loved ones that we can return her home safely here in Conway.”
Abigail Hernandez was last seen Oct. 9 leaving Kennett High School and walking on a powerline trail, authorities said. On Wednesday, investigators released a timeline detailing Hernandez’s last known whereabouts and cellphone activity in hopes that it would help the search process.
Authorities are looking for Hernandez’s cellphone — a white iPhone 5 in a pink and gray case. Specifically, they are asking businesses to check their lost-and-found holds to see if the phone might have been unclaimed, said Jane Young, associate New Hampshire attorney general.

FBI Releases New Information In Search For Missing NH Girl
By Michael Rosenfield, WBZ-TV
October 16, 2013 11:20 PM
NORTH CONWAY, NH (CBS) – The FBI has released new details in the search for 15-year-old Abigail Hernandez who went missing last week in New Hampshire. A timeline has been put together from interviews and surveillance video gathered along the route from Kennett High School toward Abby’s home.
Investigators say they have received over 500 tips since last week. They now say despite their initial reports, it’s unclear if she ever made it home after she left school last Wednesday.
CHECK: Map Of Area | Timeline
Abby was seen leaving school at 2:29pm last Wednesday and exchanged a series of texts with a classmate between 2:23 and 2:53pm. At 2:35pm, she was seen walking on the power line trail from Eagle’s Way.
There were multiple unconfirmed reports of someone matching Abby’s description between 2:40 and 3:30pm walking on the North-South Highway.
Her last cell phone activity was at 3:07pm when she sent a text message to the same classmate on the west side of Cranmore Mountain.

Cranmore Mt. is just east of North Conway.
I was visiting in the area (Jackson) a few years ago.
Lots of moose! lol
Heavily wooded area, lot of little resort towns catering to outdoor sports. White Mtn is popular especially in the winter.
It would be very cold this time of year.
Traffic would be light to non-existent.

FBI offers $20K reward in case of North Conway, NH missing teen
Thursday, October 17, 2013, 4:31pm
(NECN) – Officials held another news conference in Conway, N.H. to update the public on their search for Abigail Hernandez, who disappeared on Wednesday, October 9.
Zenya Hernandez, Abby’s mom, made a statement Thursday. She said we’re not giving up hope.
She also spoke directly to her daughter, telling her they truly, truly, truly miss her.
Zenya also told Abby to stay strong, to not give up and to continue fighting.
She also thanked the community for help and support thus far and asked them to not give up. She urged anyone with any piece of information to call.
Kieran Ramsey with FBI also spoke. He announced a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to the recovery of Abby, or information, identification, arrest and conviction of any person or persons responsible for her disappearance. He asked the community to call 1-800-CALL-FBI or visit Tips.fbi.gov with any information. He said it’s their hope that the reward offered will generate new leads and new tips that they can then safely return Abigail.

Abigail Hernandez was last seen leaving Kennett High School at 2:30 p.m. last Wednesday afternoon. Police said the next day that she made it to the town house she shared with her mother about two miles away and when the mother returned home later, Abigail was gone.

CONWAY — A Granite State organization — LostNMissing Inc. — is doing its part to assist in the search for missing local teen Abigail Hernandez and has gone nationwide with the effort.
The Londonderry non-profit has created a video named "Video of Hope: Love to Abby Hernandez" and posted it on Youtube. The four-minute video set to Train's "Calling on Angels" shows a collage of pictures of Hernandez along with photographs from the search; a missing person poster; and heartfelt messages of hope from the community.
The lyrics are also powerful:
"I need a sign to let me know you're her
"All of these lines are being crossed over the atmosphere
"I need to know that things are gonna look up
"I won't give up if you don't give up
"When children have to play inside so they don't disappear"

FBI increasingly concerned after 10 days searching for missing girl
Community works to spread information about Abigail Hernandez
UPDATED 6:18 PM EDT Oct 18, 2013
By Nick Spinetto, News Reporter
CONWAY, N.H. —FBI investigators said Friday they are frustrated and concerned that they haven't received the number of tips they hoped for after announcing a reward in the search for a missing girl.
Abigail Hernandez, 15, of North Conway, was last seen Oct. 9 when she left high school. An intense search has been undertaken since, and Thursday, officials announced a $20,000 reward for information that leads to Abigail.
FBI officials said they are grateful for the tips that have come in, but they're frustrated they haven't been able to develop strong leads. They said they also hoped that more tips would have come in.
Missing-person fliers continue to be printed as the Conway community donates its time, materials and money to help locate the missing teen.

In search for Abigail, 'time is of the essence'

CONWAY - As Kieran Ramsey looked around the law enforcement command center at the police department Thursday, he saw lots of familiar faces.
Ramsey, an FBI agent assigned to the Boston field office who is leading the bureau's part of the search for Abigail Hernandez, saw Senior Associate Attorney General Jane Young, many senior state police and New Hampshire Fish and Game officers whom he has worked with on child-abduction cases. They are part of a team of about 100 law enforcement agents, including 35 or so FBI agents, trying to find Abigail, 15, last seen Oct. 9.
So far, searches of more than 3,000 acres and 5 square miles of town haven't turned up a trace of Abigail or her missing iPhone, which last transmitted a data update at 3:07 p.m. Oct. 9, he said.
There is no evidence to suggest she was abducted or ran away, Ramsey said.

Missing Teenager Case Has Small N.H. Town On Edge
October 20, 2013 5:47 PM
NORTH CONWAY, N.H. (AP) — A dark-haired, dark-eyed girl peers out from a letter-sized poster taped to the doors of businesses lining Main Street in this tourist town.
Missing, it says.
What happened to 15-year-old Abigail Hernandez, who disappeared Oct. 9, has people on edge in the town of 2,300 residents in Mount Washington Valley. There are shades of the still-unsolved killing of another young girl from rural New Hampshire two years ago: 11-year-old Celina Cass disappeared from her West Stewartstown home, and her body was recovered a week later in the Connecticut River.

FBI: 'NO PIECE OF INFORMATION IS TOO SMALL' IN SEARCH FOR ABIGAIL HERNANDEZ
Published Date: Thursday, 24 October 2013 05:57
By Daymond Steer
CONWAY – The FBI's top agent in the search for missing teen Abigail Hernandez says he's pleased with the cooperation law enforcement has gotten from the community but wishes people weren't so shy about sharing information for fear of annoying investigators.
Hernandez, 15, a Kennett High freshman, was reported missing at 7:17 p.m. on Oct. 9. She was last seen around 2:30 p.m. leaving school, but when her family arrived home that evening she wasn't there.
The FBI's Kieran Ramsey, when reached Wednesday evening, insists that he'd rather get the same information from multiple people than risk not getting it at all.
"We continue to have people call into us and say, 'You know, I knew A, B and C and think it may be related, but I didn't want to call because I didn't want to bother you guys,'" said Ramsey.

CONWAY — A group of former law enforcement agents and missing persons' specialists converged at the Cranmore Mountain base camp over the weekend, joining the search for 15-year-old Abigail Hernandez.
Twelve dog teams with 60 volunteer searchers arrived Friday from The Mission for the Missing, a Boston-based non-profit group created in 2009 that works independently or in conjunction with law enforcement with the mission of bringing loved ones home, according to the group's leader, Alan Tate.
They were searching for personal items that her mother said she likely had with her when she disappeared: an oversized camouflage-colored book bag, a cream-colored purse, and a silver-colored necklace with a heart-shaped pendant that has a blue stone in it.

CONWAY — Zenya Hernandez's life has been turned upside-down.
Since her daughter, 15-year-old Abigail Hernandez, disappeared after leaving school on Oct. 9, she's been on an emotional roller coaster.
"We try to keep our hopes up. Every day they say they have new clues, but nothing ever comes from it," Zenya Hernandez said Monday at her home.
"I keep thinking, she'll be found, I need to keep up hope, but then I think about the terrible things that could have happened. It's tough, each day."

NORTH CONWAY — As one missing persons case is actively being investigated by law enforcement agents in town, another is likely about to be solved.
While search crews were combing the woods near Cranmore Mountain Resort on Oct. 12 in the early days of the search for 15-year-old Abigail Hernandez, who disappeared after leaving school on Oct. 9, they came upon human remains of someone who authorities said had died several years ago.
State Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas A. Andrew said investigators are in the final stages of testing and obtaining medical records before making a firm declaration of finding in the case.
But they have a sole “person of interest” in the case, identified by Andrew as John Sweeney of Mechanic Street in Conway, who was 50 when he disappeared in 2006.

CONWAY — While authorities investigating the disappearance of 15-year-old Abigail Hernandez say they have found no distinct direction to follow in the case, residents in the area are making a clear statement.
"We aren't giving up," said Jonathan Goodwin, owner of Gemini Signs in Conway, who just donated a $1,200 sign with Hernandez's photo, personal details, and the FBI's contact number on it.
The sign is on a billboard visible from the northbound lane of Route 16 in Albany. The use of the billboard was donated by Ambix, a local company. The sign will stay on the billboard, Goodwin said, until Hernandez is found. She was last seen leaving Kennett High School in North Conway on Oct. 9.
"I think everybody feels pretty shattered. It's a horrible, horrible thing," Goodwin said. "But at the same time, this is a sweet little girl, and we won't give up on her. We will never give up, she's out there somewhere."

A father, desperate to find his missing teenage daughter, has made a public appeal for the girl to communicate a secret Bible passage known only to them to indicate if she were alive and had run away.
In an open letter posted to Facebook, Ruben Hernandez, father of missing 15-year-old Abigail Hernandez, asked the girl to reach out to family or law enforcement and let them know she is alive.
“We don’t know if you ran away, but if you did it’s important for you to know, sweetheart, that nobody is angry with you, and you are not and will not be in any trouble. I just need to know that you are OK,” he wrote. Abigail Hernandez was last seen walking out of her high school in Conway, N.H., three weeks ago.

Police: Get Pics of Abigail Hernandez Out Before Thanksgiving
11:10 am Sun November 24, 2013
By AMANDA LODER
As Thanksgiving approaches, North Conway police are asking people to post more photos of 15-year old Abigail Hernandez throughout New England. She’s been missing for more than six weeks--since shortly before Columbus Day. Police say Thanksgiving is important because some people visiting the area when she disappeared could return for the holiday.
In a news conference Friday, Abigail’s mother, Zenya Hernandez, read from a statement.
“Abby, you matter to me. I believe you’re alive, and I know that hope speaks louder than fear" Hernandez said. "It is my hope that you can reach out to me. I feel your absence every day, and I want you home with me.”

POLICE HOPE HOLIDAY TRAVELERS WILL HELP IN ABBY SEARCH
Published Date: Tuesday, 26 November 2013 02:41

CONWAY – Law enforcement officials say the Thanksgiving holiday creates an opportunity to spread information about missing teen Abigail Hernandez. They hope the information will reach those who could provide a clue about her disappearance.
Hernandez, 15, of Conway, was last seen walking on the power line trail from Kennett High School's Eagle's Way on Oct. 9 just after 2:30 p.m. The last known contact between her cell phone and the cellular network was on the west side of Cranmore Mountain at 3:07 p.m. The phone has not been found.
Last Friday, officials held their first press conference in about six weeks. No new information was released. Hernandez's mother, Zenya Hernandez, made an appeal, reading a letter to her daughter.
"Dear Abby, I believe you are out there somewhere, watching and listening to me right now," Zenya Hernandez said. "I believe you are alive, and I know that hope speaks louder than fear. It is my hope that you can reach out to me."

Missing New Hampshire Teen Abigail Hernandez Sent Mom Letter
Dec. 6, 2013
More...A missing New Hampshire teen sent her mother a letter that was postmarked weeks after she disappeared, authorities said today. The letter from Abigail Hernandez, 15, was postmarked on Oct. 23 and received on Nov. 6, according to the FBI and New Hampshire Attorney General's Office. "When we received this letter, I will tell you it was unprecedented. It gave us hope," FBI special agent Kieran Ramsey said. Mom Pleads For Missing Daughter's Return Investigators said they decided to come forward with the existence of the letter because they fear the teen may be in "grave" danger and could perhaps be used for sexual exploitation if she is still alive. While it was unclear if Hernandez left willingly or was abducted, Ramsey said investigators' "worst fear" is "someone may now be coercing her." wrote:

Police have charged a 34-year-old man with kidnapping Abigail Hernandez, the New Hampshire teen who vanished on her walk home from school nine months before she returned home last week, authorities said.
Nathaniel Kibby was arrested at his home in Gorham, New Hampshire, this afternoon. He is charged with felony kidnapping, according to the New Hampshire Attorney General's office.
His arrest comes after the teen walked into her mother's home in the town of Conway -- which is 34 miles away from Gorham -- on July 20.
Girl Who Vanished for Nine Months Is Very Weak, Malnourished
Associate Attorney General Jane Young told ABC News that the investigation is ongoing and there may be more arrests if evidence reveals more suspects, but for the time being they are not actively pursuing other suspects. There is a news conference planned for Tuesday for after Kibby is arraigned, officials said.

Collared: Nathaniel E Kibby, 34, was arrested Monday in connection to the nine-month disappearance of New Hampshire teen Abigail Hernandez, who reappeared alive in her hometown last week
An arrest has been made in the mysterious case of a New Hampshire 15-year-old girl who went missing nine months ago and reappared home last week.
Nathaniel Kibby, 34, was arrested at his home in Gorham Monday afternoon and charged with the felony kidnapping of Conway teen Abigail Hernandez.
The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office said in a press release that Kibby confined Hernandez on October 9, 2013 'with purpose to commit an offense against her.'
'Hernandez provided police with details of her kidnapping sufficient to warrant (the) arrest,' investigators added.
Kibby was allegedly arrested without incident and is set to be arraigned in Tuesday at Conway District Court.
Neighbor Donald Stgermain, 76, was at home at the time Kibby was arrested and described the scene to MailOnline.
Mr Stgermain said he was making food around noon when law enforcement showed up outside his neighbor's house, 'dressed in battle gear with rifles'.
He says about an hour later FBI agents showed up at his house, asking if he knew Kibby or had ever seen a young girl near the house. Mr Stgermain said he never had, and never noticed anything strange happening at Kibby's house.
