Oscar Pistorius has admitted he had "no reason" to fire the shots that killed his girlfriend as a prosecutor grilled him about another incident in which a gun went off in his possession.

The Paralympic sprinter insisted he killed Reeva Steenkamp by accident at his home on Valentine's Day last year, but could not explain why he pulled the trigger.

Pistorius, 27, spent a full day under gruelling cross-examination by prosecutor Gerrie Nel at the high court in Pretoria, South Africa. Pistorius claimed he thought he had heard an intruder, but repeatedly refused to say he intended to shoot anyone.

Nel challenged him: "We know for a fact there were no intruders in your house that night, we know for a fact there was no ladder against the wall. We know for a fact that you had no reason to shoot, objectively speaking."

Pistorius told the judge: "That's correct, my lady."

Pistorius Prosecutor Blasts Apology as 'Spectacle in Court'

The prosecutor grilling Oscar Pistorius scoffed today at his explanations for what happened the night he killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, saying it was "so improbable" that no one could believe it was true.

During a day of questioning that was at times testy and sarcastic, prosecutor Gerrie Nel got Pistorius to repeatedly deny blame for killing Steenkamp or having a gun discharge in a restaurant and denying an accusation that he once fired a gun out the sunroof of a car.

After recounting how Pistorius did not think it was "negligent" to have left his gun wrapped in a towel on a boat while he went swimming, Nel exclaimed, “It’s the strangest day today. You just don’t take responsibility for anything. You just don’t do anything wrong.”

Earlier, Nel ridiculed Pistorius for opening his defense with an apology to Steenkamp's family, saying he had no regard for the feelings of Steenkamp’s relatives and could have apologized in private -- but instead he waited more than a year, wanting to create a spectacle at court.

The prosecution alleges that the couple had fought and that Steenkamp ran screaming to the toilet and locked herself in before Pistorius shot her.

Nel relentlessly painted a portrait of a self-absorbed man who wouldn't take responsibility for wrongdoing, was negligent with firearms and ammunition and didn't recognize a police officer's right to confiscate a loaded gun that Pistorius had left unattended on a car seat.

"Pistorius said his gun safe "possessed items that belonged to me and my father," including .38-caliber ammunition for which he had no license. At another point he said a Glock pistol in his hand fired by itself at a restaurant, and he repeatedly insisted he had never pulled the trigger. A ballistics expert has testified that the gun cannot fire unless the trigger is pulled.

When the prosecutor told him it was illegal to keep the ammunition in his safe without a license, Pistorius responded, "It's not my understanding of the law."

"This is the second time today," Nel mockingly replied, referring to the possession of the ammunition. "First we had the miraculous discharge of a gun. Now when I say it's illegal, you won't accept it."

Pistorius has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Steenkamp; to unlicensed possession of .38-caliber ammunition; and to two counts of recklessly discharging the firearm, at a restaurant and from a car.

Pistorius said his late girlfriend "exaggerated" in a WhatsApp message to him complaining that he threw public tantrums, frightened her and picked on her incessantly.

"I didn't pick on her in any way. I was good to Reeva," the athlete said. "Reeva was never scared of me."

Nel also suggested that after a disagreement at a function with Steenkamp, the athlete asked a friend in the car to put on an album by musician Kendrick Lamar, with the track "Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe," upsetting Steenkamp. She mentioned in a WhatsApp message to Pistorius after the row that "I am not some other bitch you may know trying to kill your vibe." Pistorius said he couldn't remember what song upset his girlfriend.

What does it mean to fire a gun “accidentally”? If you point a gun at the door to a tiny cubicle, believing, you say, that a person is behind it, and fire four shots, can you also say, “I didn’t shoot at anyone. I didn’t intend to shoot at someone.… I didn’t shoot or intend to kill anyone”? That is the testimony of Oscar Pistorius, who is on trial for murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. In a remarkable few days of cross-examination, Pistorius, an Olympian and a Paralympic sprinter, has, according to press accounts, placed the blame for his legal predicament on the police, his friends, his father, an ex-girlfriend, his own lawyers, and Steenkamp herself, who was behind the door when he shot. His defense is that he thought she was a burglar. Addressing the judge, he said, “My lady, I wish she had let me know she was there.”


But, then, guns behave strangely in Pistorius’s hands. As he tells it, they have an eerie autonomy. “I didn’t have time to think,” he has said, over and over again—only to pull the trigger, and pull it three more times again—as if the absence of thought attached to that act, the power of the gun, was an absolution. And sometimes, the trigger even pulls itself. Pistorius is being tried for Steenkamp’s murder, and for two other incidents in which he allegedly fired a gun. One was in a restaurant, when he asked to see a friend’s gun and took it from him under the table. While it was in his hands, and no one else’s, a bullet was fired. On the stand, he said that his friend was “stupid” to give him a loaded gun—and that, anyway, he, Oscar Pistorius, didn’t fire it. “I physically didn’t discharge it. It went off when it was in my possession, but I did not have my finger on the trigger,” he said.

Nel: Pistorius rushed to danger

PRETORIA - Prosecutor Gerrie Nel on Friday asked Oscar Pistorius why Reeva Steenkamp did not scream out that she was in the bathroom after he shouted there was an intruder in the house.

Speaking in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, the prosecutor, known as the ‘bull terrier’, asked the athlete whether Steenkamp screamed when he opened fire.

“How can you say that nobody screamed during the shots,” Nel asked.

“I cannot say no-one screamed during the shots. I can say no-one screamed. There weren’t women screaming. There wasn’t a woman screaming or shouting,” Pistorius said.

Pistorius testified Steenkamp never screamed when he fired the four shots through the door.

The athlete said he screamed very loudly while in the bathroom for the intruder to get out and again for Steenkamp to call for help.

Pretoria - Oscar Pistorius on Friday told his murder trial he never looked at Reeva Steenkamp before he rushed to confront a suspected intruder and fired the shots that killed her.

Pistorius testified that he "whispered" to his girlfriend to ring the police, in the belief that she was still in bed, but kept his gaze away from her to the passage door.

Oscar Pistorius has denied that his girlfriend was standing behind a door talking to him when he shot and killed her, during a floundering performance under cross-examination at his trial in Pretoria.

In a rare intervention that is likely to worry the defence, at one point the judge, Thokozile Masipa, asked Pistorius why he was making mistakes on the stand.

The prosecutor, Gerrie Nel, gradually zeroed in on the critical moment when the athlete crept into his bathroom with a 9mm pistol and shot four times. Forensic experts have testified that Reeva Steenkamp was probably standing behind the locked toilet cubicle door when she was hit by the first bullet, then fell backwards.

Pistorius asserted that when he entered the bathroom he shouted to Steenkamp to call the police, so Nel demanded to know why she did not respond, describing it as the "most improbable" part of his story.The prosecutor said: "At that stage when you shouted at Reeva to phone the police, she was three metres away from you in the toilet, but she didn't say anything. Thirty-one seconds – that’s how long Oscar Pistorius was silent for when asked by Prosecutor Gerrie Nel if he heard Reeva Steenkamp scream after he fired the first of four shots that killed her.

Late on the second day of what has been a sustained and brutal cross-examination, Nel said: “Are you sure, Mr Pistorius, that Reeva didn’t scream after you fired the first shot?”

Oscar slumped back in his chair and kept quiet for 31 seconds. Court GD in Pretoria was ­utterly silent.

On the audio recording, all that can be heard is Nel again asking “Are you sure?” after five seconds of silence had passed.

Eleven seconds later, a man can be heard taking a deep breath and slowly exhaling. Surprisingly, it is Nel who breaks the silence to come to Pistorius’ rescue, saying: “My Lady, I’m ­giving the witness time to console himself, he is distressed”.

“I wouldn’t have done that,” said an ­experienced former prosecutor.

“I would have kept quiet and counted and then when he finally said something, I would have said: ‘That took you four and a half minutes. What were you thinking about?’’’

The athlete, who earlier said he was tired and struggling under the relentless interrogation, leaned back in the witness box and remained silent. The wood-lined courtroom in South Africa was hushed and expectant on Friday. Was Pistorius thinking through an answer, or was he on the verge of an emotional outburst, or was he reflecting on his predicament and Reeva Steenkamp, the girlfriend he killed in his home last year?

After a tense pause, the Olympic athlete said he wished Steenkamp had let him know she was in the toilet cubicle where he shot her — by mistake, according to his account. He said she did not scream, but also that his ears were ringing with the gunshot and he would not have heard screams.

The sister of Reeva Steenkamp has told how her quiet life in a Cambridgeshire village was shattered after finding out her “baby sister” had been shot dead by her boyfriend Oscar Pistorius.

Simone Steenkamp – who, up until Reeva’s death, lived in Cambridgeshire – was woken in the early morning of Valentine’s Day last year with the news.

She said: “It was 6am and I was hearing that my little sister had been shot dead. I just froze, I was dazed. I got up and went outside in my pyjamas, shivering from the cold and the shock.

“A neighbour called to ask if I was all right and I said I didn’t think so. I couldn’t stop shivering, then I phoned my mother and began to realise this terrible nightmare was really true.”

Cape Town - After a harrowing week in court and being cross-examined in the dock, Oscar Pistorius has now also been accused of lying to the public by the Sunday Times newspaper.

According to the newspaper, Pistorius, who was desperate to protect his public image and his lucrative sponsorship deals, lied to cover up an assault in December 2012 and also lied about his relationship in January last year with Reeva Steenkamp.

World-famous murder-accused Paralympian athlete, Oscar Pistorius admitted in the Pretoria High Court on Friday he has never reported a crime at a police station. This was in spite of evidence previously given in court that he has been a frequent victim of crime. He told the court he believed there was no need to report the numerous criminal incidents to the police because they would not have been able to do anything about the crimes.

State prosecutor Advocate Gerrie Nel (above), asked why he had never “complained about a crime” since he has consistently maintained he has been exposed to so much crime. Pistorius replied that when his house was broken into he did not have insurance and so there was not reason to go and report the crime. When he was shot at on a busy highway he did not report the matter to the police because he did not think they would be able to do anything about it. When he was assaulted in December 2012, he said he did not want to go to the police because he had been told the assailant “had connections at the police station.” On this occasion he reported the incident to the Hawks, South Africa’s special investigating unit set up to get rid of corruption and organized crime. When someone kicked his dog in the yard of a previous house he owned, he called the police but did not open a case because there had not been a break in.

Alternatively, even if Pistorius was genuinely mistaken in respect of all of the requirements of the attack, he may also be convicted of murder if he foresaw the possibility that one of the requirements of the response may not have been satisfied. He can be convicted of murder if the state can show that he foresaw the possibility (and reconciled himself to that risk) that he was not acting against the supposed attacker, that force was not necessary, or that the extent of force used was not necessary and reasonable......"

This explains WHY advocate/atty Nels, prosecutor, keeps drilling home the fact OP was NOT in any danger as it was Reeva in the toilet area. There were NO intruders in the home at that time.

When OP was supposedly stalked, etc., did he NOT have a legal duty to report the activities to PD authorities in order to protect others from similar behavior?

PRETORIA, South Africa -- Reeva Steenkamp, the 29-year-old model and girlfriend of South African Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, had a sports bag packed with her clothes, ready to leave his house, the night he fatally shot her, prosecutor Gerrie Nel told Pretoria’s high court Monday.

The only items not yet packed were a pair of jeans and a pair of flip-flops. Pistorius, on trial for murder, denied there had been a quarrel and she was about to leave.

Pistorius, who contends he shot at the enclosed toilet in which Steenkamp had locked herself because he believed an intruder was there, told the court he screamed at the imagined stranger to get out of his house.

As he recounted the words, Pistorius broke down, weeping in a high-pitched tone. Nel suggested that Pistorius screamed at Steenkamp to get out of his house, a claim the athlete denied.

Wow! I missed this today!!!
I had speculated this, ".... he screamed at the imagined stranger to get out of his house....." and he had, in fact, yelled at REEVA to get out of his house! Once the witnesses started coming forth, however, he might have been concerned they heard his words to Reeva so he quickly backtracked.
