I'm looking for current articles on her trial as I understand a jury has been seated, so I assume opening statements should start tomorrow.

TAMPA — Emotions flared on Thursday as attorneys began to question a pool of 90 prospective jurors in the trial of Julie Schenecker, the New Tampa mother accused of murdering her two teenage children in 2011.

Two female jurors began to cry. Separately, they told Pruner that they wanted to have children, but hadn't been able to conceive.

"We don't have any children and not for lack of trying, just no luck," said one woman.

After jury selection ended Wednesday, she went home and thought about the case, she said. The prospect of spending two more weeks immersed in the story of a woman accused killed her own children was too much to handle.

Both of the women were excused.

Schenecker murder trial opening statements set to begin

TAMPA — Opening statements in the murder trial of Julie Schenecker, the Tampa mother accused of killing her two teenage children in 2011, were scheduled to get underway Monday morning in a Hillsborough courtroom.

The trial portion of the case began last week with five days of jury selection. By Friday, the jury of seven women and nine men, including four alternate jurors, had been seated.

Schenecker, 53, faces two counts of first degree murder. Police say she shot her son, Beau, 13, in the family's van after taking him home from soccer practice. She's accused of shooting her daughter, Calyx, 16, in the head while the girl was working on her homework upstairs in the family's home.

Julie Schenecker trial: Jury hears graphic details in double murder trial

TAMPA, Fla. - Day two of testimony is underway in the Julie Schenecker murder trial.

The second day began with the continuation of testimony from the Tampa Police Department's crime scene technician,  Matthew Evans, reading photographs of the handwritten notes in Schenecker's journal.

In the notes, Schenecker referenced her depression and her medication usage. "The meds never kicked in," she wrote. "Might have made a difference."

Schenecker wrote that she should have gone into the psych ward instead of being treated for alcohol or drug abuse. "I believe my brain is trashed," she wrote. She also wrote that no one came to help when she was in her room for seven weeks and that her former husband, Parker Schenecker, never taught the children compassion.

TAMPA — Without ever taking the witness stand, Julie Schenecker told a jury and a courtroom full of family members on Wednesday that she'd planned to kill her children three years ago.

Prosecutors played audio from a 2011 recording of Schenecker made after she was taken to Tampa police headquarters, where detectives interviewed her for over an hour. Seated near a woman whose body shook, whose hands had blood on them, and whose mind occasionally latched onto the idea that her children were still alive, detectives asked the same question that parents everywhere were asking each other: Why would a mother kill her children?

Schenecker had a half-dozen half-formed replies. She'd loved her children until they reached the age of 6, she told the detectives. But in the last few years, her 16-year-old daughter, Calyx, had become "mouthy" and her 13-year-old son was following suit. "They were really mean," she said, recalling how Calyx threatened to go away to college and never see her mother again. The remark had made her cry, Schenecker said.

Fla. mom lashes out during trial for killing teens

TAMPA, Fla. May 9, 2014 (AP)

A Tampa woman on trial in the slaying of her two teenage children while her Army officer husband was overseas yelled, "Liar!" at a psychiatrist who was testifying Friday that he had told her not to drink while taking drugs to control her bipolar disorder.

Julie Schenecker lashed out at Dr. Demian Obregon from the defense table after he said he had warned her that the alcohol-drug combination could be deadly. She interjected that he had approved her having a couple drinks.

Judge Emmett Battles immediately stopped the hearing, ordered the jury out and admonished Schenecker, telling her she would be restrained if she had another outburst. She slowly nodded "yes" when asked if she understood.

Defense attorneys have said that besides bipolar disorder, the defendant suffered from depression. Obregon, a University of South Florida psychiatrist who treated Schenecker, is a key defense witness to establish Schenecker's mental state. She has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A woman accused of shooting her two teenagers called herself "a failure" because she didn't succeed at committing suicide after killing her children, a psychiatrist testified Monday.

Dr. Eldra Solomon testified in the trial of Julie Schenecker in Hillsborough County Court. The doctor was called to the stand by the defense team, which is trying to prove the 53-year-old was insane in January 2011 when she shot her 16-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son.

Solomon told the jury that she reviewed all of Schenecker's medical records and spent some 20 hours with her following the slayings.

She detailed how Schenecker was molested by a neighbor when she was 7, and how she had thought about suicide since she was 12 — and tried to commit suicide twice. Schenecker had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder with psychotic features on many different occasions, by several doctors, throughout her life

The state rested its rebuttal case. Court in recess until 9:45 a.m. Thursday morning, Eastern time.

This was an interesting case to follow.
I was sure of JS' mental illness and that ultimately lead to her murdering her children.
Sure until I heard the closing arguments.
Based upon the written journal evidence and the camera shots of her as she picked up the gun, and the notes on the door/calendar...
based upon her ability to drive and accurately shoot the gun...
based upon JS's written info re when the mother and children would supposedly be home (Tues, the day hubby was due back)...
and so much more...

IMO, JS was SANE but presented herself as insane at the time of her arrest. She finally documented her frustrations with her husband and her children even stating long in advance of ther desire to kill her daughter. And killing her dau was NOT because of her desire to take them with her, to give them a better life in heaven, etc., but because she did not want to stop drinking (as husband ordered her to do) and because she was afraid of her husband divorcing her leaving her alone.

She was astute enough to have charged the gun purchase to HER credit card where the husband would not see it in advance of her murdering the kids.

I do not doubt JS has mental illness.
I do not doubt mentally ill CAN plan crimes.
I just do not think she did not know her actions would result in the death of another, were unjustified, and were against the law.

I surprised myself...

May I add 25 years on each count as well for the gun.
I cannot tell you how happy I am that the jury could see what we saw. She did her own self in with her own words in her journal. She does love to talk. Her allocution was nothing but self serving. She moved on in her life right after she killed her kids.

IMO, JS does have mental illness. How else to justify her actions?
She is intelligent and had a military history.
Where to draw the line?
When she knew the difference between right and wrong and proceeded to selfishly destroy lives of her children in order to strike back at a perceived "injustice" from her husband.
What was this "injustice" she felt?
She was told to not drink as it was interfering with her medications;
she continued to drink.
When her husband told her he would not allow it and the resulting behavior around his children, she felt it was unjust.
When she saw the relationship her husband had with the children, she became envious and angry and that started her plotting.
She wanted her bottle above her children even knowing it might eventually lead to the divorce from her husband.
That scared her as she had no true friends, family, and no clear occupational skills or even hobbies.
Without the attention and duties to her family, she had nothing.
Based upon her fear of losing it all, she elected to destroy her husband by killing his children....

My concern:
The jury was out for a total of two hours and five minutes.
Is this sufficient time to select a jury foreman, take a straw vote, a committing vote, fill out the forms?
Had there been prior discussion before they were discharged to begin deliberations?
What/when were the deliberations?
Odd no one held out for mentally insane for insanity WAS a part of her life.

I am concerned with the appeals....better had they not returned a verdict for 4 hours....

So how could she kill her own flesh and blood? Over the span of our two-hour meeting, the former military intelligence officer, who never took the stand in her trial, tried to shed light on her unthinkable actions.

"When you woke up that morning, did you know that you wanted to kill your kids?" I asked.

"No," she said. "I was only going to kill me. I went to get a gun, but the store wouldn't let me take it home that day. So, I had to wait. If I had gotten it the day that I went to the gun store I would have killed myself that day." ...."

"....She told ABC Action News what she does remember, including killing her 13-year-old son first.

"My Beau," she said in a whisper.

They had just pulled into the garage. While still strapped in his seatbelt, she said, Beau glanced at her before she pulled the trigger.

"He was putting on his shoes or something, I don't know," Schenecker said.

And then, in a hushed tone, as if to make sure no one else could hear, she told me, "He did see the gun."

I asked if Beau said anything.

"I think so, but I don't know for sure," said Schenecker.

She does know she went to find Calyx next. She shot her 16-year-old in the head while she did homework.

“She did not see the gun, no she did not see the gun,” Schenecker said. ..."
