Annapolis Man's Phone Records Sought in DC Mansion Murders

Authorities found flaws in story of Annapolis driver who delivered cash while family was held hostage. He is not a suspect, police say.
By Ethan Levine (Patch Staff) June 18, 2015

The former personal driver of Savvas Savopoulos, one of four victims in the recent D.C. Mansion Murders, told authorities he did not pick up a $40,000 ransom and drop it off at Savopoulos’ home, the scene of the murders.

However, police are not buying that story, according to court documents related to the case, and they’re now seeking a warrant to search the driver’s phone records as a result.

Yeah, right, W-1 is "not a suspect"! It's only a matter of time until LE has what they need to charge him with murder. His actions and changing stories leave me little choice but to believe that he was VERY involved with this plot.

Thanks for providing this link, CP. Once I started scrolling down I realized that the document provides a play-by-play of what the initial investigation has uncovered so far.

Hmm, do you think that they might have used the lime green construction vests as a ruse to gain access to the home, perhaps, saying that they were there to repair something?

Unexpected choice in hiring attorney for suspect in quadruple killings

By Keith L. Alexander June 21 at 8:05 PM

The e-mail that arrived in the inbox of Fairfax attorney Sean Hanover said simply: “We need help with the D.C. mansion murders.”

Hanover dashed off to court, asking one of his assistants to follow up. When he returned, his assistant told him that the note was from family members of Daron Wint, the man charged with first-degree murder in the May killings of three members of the Savopoulos family and their housekeeper, whose burned bodies were found in the Savopoulos’s Northwest Washington home.

“Oh, that case,” he remembered thinking.

The next day, Hanover met with Wint’s mother, two sisters and brother for more than two hours — and they hired him. It was an unexpected choice. Hanover has built his practice primarily on immigration cases and has handled only one other murder case. The former jeweler has been practicing law since 2008, the year he graduated from law school at the University of the District of Columbia.

WASHINGTON -  There was some movement around the Savopoulos home in northwest D.C. Monday when a large rental truck, and workers who appeared to be movers, were packing up furniture and other items in the garage.

Savvas Savopoulos, his wife, Amy, their son, Philip, and their housekeeper, Vera Figueroa, were found dead on May 14 after firefighters discovered them while responding to a fire at their burning home on Woodland Drive.

One suspect, 34-year-old Daron Wint, has been arrested for the murders in this case.

Wint and his new lawyers are due to appear in court on July 2nd.

A grand jury has been convened in the mansion murders case after the deaths of Amy, Philip and Savvas Savopoulos and their housekeeper Veralicia Figueroa. More charges could be coming. We're also hearing a new audio recording from the family for the first time. Meagan Fitzgerald has the story, only on News4. (Published Friday, Jun 26, 2015)

Updated at 11:25 PM EDT on Friday, Jun 26, 2015

Audio recordings obtained by News4 reveal some of the final communications of the Savopoulos family, three members of which were found dead with their housekeeper in a Northwest D.C. mansion on May 14.

The recordings may help investigators understand the events that led to the horrific murders of Savvas Savopoulos, 46, his wife, Amy, 47, the couple's son Philip, 10, and housekeeper Veralicia Figueroa, 57.

~Snipped~

A source close to the family said Savvas Savopolos received a call from his wife on Wednesday, May 13 asking him to head home.

Investigators believe Amy, their 10-year-old son Philip and Figueroa were already being held hostage inside when that call was made.

~Snipped~

A grand jury has been convened in D.C., which could lead to more felony charges. Only Wint has been charged in connection with the crime, though others are believed to have been involved.

Daron Wint Claims He Was Framed in DC Mansion Murder Case

The new attorney for accused D.C. mansion killer Daron Wint has handled sex crimes, gang violence, attempted murder and corporate malfeasance, but only once before has he handled a first-degree murder case.

Even so, attorney Sean Hanover, 41, a former businessman and teacher, said he felt compelled to take the case after meeting Wint's mother, sister and brother.

~Snipped~

Wint, 34, remains the sole suspect in custody in the May slayings of Savvas Savopoulos, his wife, Amy, their son, Philip, and their housekeeper, Veralicia Figueroa.

Police have said they have DNA evidence linking Wint to the house, but also believe other accomplices are still at large. At a recent news conference, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier declined to comment on the case, saying only, "It is still under active investigation."

Hanover has met with Wint in jail three times.

Sword, duct tape among possible evidence collected in Savopoulos killings

By Keith L. Alexander July 1, 2015

The assailant or assailants who killed three members of the Savopoulos family and their housekeeper in May are believed to have used a sword that belonged to the family, according to two people familiar with the investigation.

The sword, which was part of Savvas Savopoulos’s martial arts collection, was found at the scene with what appeared to be blood on it, according to the people. Authorities also found bits of duct tape that police think was used to subdue the victims. Tape remnants were on the body of Savopoulos’s wife, Amy, and on a chair where housekeeper Veralicia Figueroa was found, according to one official familiar with the case. That person said the tape also was stripped across a doggy door that led to the kitchen, keeping the family’s two dogs in the back yard.

...Multiple bags containing hundreds of items have been collected as possible evidence from the home. The items are being analyzed by D.C. police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Secret Service.

Hearing on D.C. Mansion Murders Delayed After Wint Fires Lawyer (Video)

Updated at 4:29 PM EDT on Thursday, Jul 2, 2015

A court hearing for the man charged with the slayings of a wealthy family and their housekeeper inside a Washington mansion was delayed Thursday when the defendant fired his lawyer.

Daron Wint's lawyer, Sean Hanover, was dismissed before the hearing began. Outside of court, Hanover said the reason was a "dispute between him and his client."

But Hanover reiterated that he felt his client was set up. He had just been hired by Wint's family in June.

Wint was given a public defender. The hearing was rescheduled for July 20.

Suspect in DC mansion slayings fires his defense attorneys

By BEN NUCKOLS
Associated Press
June 2, 2015

WASHINGTON (AP) - A man accused in the slayings of a wealthy family and their housekeeper inside a Washington mansion fired his defense attorneys on Thursday and will once again be represented by public defenders.

Daron Wint, 34, made the decision at the start of a scheduled preliminary hearing, which was then postponed.

~Snipped~

Defense attorney Sean Hanover said he and Wint "had a difference of opinion" that led Wint to dismiss him and a colleague who was handling immigration matters. He did not detail what the disagreement was about.

Hanover also said he believes there are multiple people who were involved in the slayings who are still at large, and he said he thinks Wint was "set up," although he did not elaborate. Police have said in court documents that they believe more than one person was involved in the elaborate crime, but no other suspects have been identified and no one else has been arrested.

~Snipped~

Hanover said Wint had expressed sorrow over the victims' deaths. One of the Savopouloses' daughters, 19-year-old Abigail, was in the courtroom on Thursday, watching stoically as Wint conferred with his attorneys and the judge. The daughter, who like her sister was away at boarding school at the time of the slayings, did not speak to reporters.

Savvas Savopoulos, Veralicia Figueroa brutalized before being murdered in quadruple homicide

July 20, 2015

Victims were beaten before being strangled to death.

By Raif Karerat

WASHINGTON, DC: Savvas Savopoulos and his family’s housekeeper, Veralicia Figueroa, were beaten and strangled on the early morning of May 13, a D.C. homicide detective testified Monday during a D.C. Superior Court hearing.

~Snipped~

Owens also testified Monday that the defendant’s DNA was found on a construction vest that was inside a blue Porsche that was owned by the Savopoulos family and found burned in New Carrollton, Maryland.

According to the Washington Post, Owens stated that Wint’s DNA wasn’t the only evidence found on the vest. Savvas Savopoulos’s DNA along with a third, unknown person’s DNA were also found on the vest, the detective said.

Under cross examination by Wint’s public defender Arthur Ago, Owens testified that a witness told police about seeing a man with a close, “edged” haircut, speeding down New York Avenue Northeast, weaving in and out of traffic in a blue Porsche around 1:30 p.m. on May 14, reported The Post.

Owens acknowledged during testimony that Wint, the defendant, has long braids and does not match the description given by the witness, reported CBS News, implicating another collaborator in the quadruple homicide.

DNA from vest, money links suspect to slayings of DC family

Associated Press
By BEN NUCKOLS

WASHINGTON (AP) — DNA from a man accused in the slayings of wealthy Washington family and their housekeeper was found on a construction vest inside a car stolen from the family's home, and a man driving the car was seen wearing a similar vest in the aftermath of the slayings, a detective testified Monday.

A judge cited the DNA and other evidence against 34-year-old Daron Wint in finding probable cause that he committed first-degree murder and ordered him held without bond pending further court proceedings. Wint is charged in the deaths of Savvas Savopoulos; his wife, Amy; their 10-year-old son, Philip; and a housekeeper, Veralicia Figueroa.

DNA of 3rd person found in DC mansion slayings (Video)

Associated Press, WUSA 9 Staff and Bruce Leshan, WUSA 8:44 p.m. EDT July 20, 2015

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- DNA from an unidentified person was found during investigations into the slayings of a wealthy family and their housekeeper inside a Washington mansion.

~Snipped~

In court, we learned that police found DNA not only from Daron Wint and Savopoulos but a third person on a vest in a burned Porsche.

During his last appearance, Wint fired his defense attorneys. He's now being represented by public defenders. His new attorney suggested at court that the courier kept two stacks of money. Police say they have recovered more than $30,000 of the money.

On Monday, a judge found probable cause to charge Wint with the murders. Wint's attorney said a knife was found in the trash outside the mansion. Wint's attorney also said there is no evidence tying him to the bloody bat and missing samurai swords.

~Snipped~

A daughter of the Savopoulos couple is in the courtroom, listening intently to the arguments.

Prosecution: Possible more than 1 person involved in Savopoulos murders

...In court, prosecutors asked the judge to delay the hearing until mid-December.

The only discussion came when Wint's lawyer asked prosecutors to reveal the name of a witness who apparently saw someone driving a Porsche stolen from the home along New York Avenue. The witness described the person in the car as having short hair.

The prosecution refused and an assistant U.S. attorney told the judge, "It is quite possible more than one person is involved."

...The next hearing for Wint has been scheduled for December 17.

$40,000 ransom? Mystery deepens five months after wealthy family, housekeeper murdered

Posted 6:33 pm, October 20, 2015, by CNN Wire Service

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Five months have passed since a wealthy Washington family and their housekeeper were murdered, and the mystery has only deepened.

...All for a $40,000 ransom?

That’s how much investigators say the killer or killers escaped with. A substantial amount of money — tens of thousands of dollars — was left behind somewhere in the home, along with millions of dollars in art and jewelry, according to multiple sources close to the investigation.

Why would the killer have Savvas Savopoulos arrange to have $40,000 in ransom money delivered to the house — and then knowingly leave behind tens of thousands of dollars?

“I’m sure that Savvas would have given everything away to save his family,” said longtime friend Laurie Diamond.

Former FBI Assistant Director Ron Hosko said the evidence makes him think this was about more than money.

D.C. mansion where four were murdered is up for sale (Video)

By Mary Kay Mallonee, CNN
Updated 1:24 AM ET, Tue November 3, 2015

Washington (CNN)—The red brick mansion in which a wealthy D.C. family and their housekeeper were held hostage, tortured and murdered this past spring is now up for sale.

~Snipped~

The five-bedroom, six-and-a-half-bath property on Woodland Drive NW is for sale for $3.25 million. Its windows are still boarded up, the fire damage still clearly visible from the street.

Days after the bodies were discovered, police arrested Daron Wint, 34, and charged him with murder in the case.

Court records have indicated a $40,000 ransom was delivered to the house while the four victims were being held hostage for more than 18 hours. CNN also learned tens of thousands of dollars were mysteriously left behind in the home, along with millions of dollars in art and jewelry.

Police and prosecutors have said repeatedly they believe others beside Wint were involved in the crime but have so far not named any additional suspects.

Demolition to begin at the Savopoulos home after being sold

By STEPHEN TSCHIDA, ABC7 Wednesday, January 13th 2016

WASHINGTON (ABC7) — The D.C. mansion that was the scene of four chilling murders almost a year ago could soon be a pile of rubble if a 'raze permit' is approved.

...Now the new owner has applied for a permit to tear down the house. Today a crew was there stripping away anything salvageable. They took cabinets, doors and other pieces of the structure to resell.

Prosecutors list evidence turned over to defense in DC mansion murders case

WASHINGTON - New evidence has been released in the brutal quadruple murder that took place inside a northwest D.C. mansion last year.

The man accused in the case has yet to go on trial. Darron Wint was indicted by a grand jury on 20 felony charges that include first-degree murder while armed, burglary, kidnapping, extortion, arson and theft in the deaths of Savvas and Amy Savopoulos, their son Philip, and their housekeeper, Veralicia Figueroa—all of whom were found killed inside the family’s home on Woodland Drive last year.

Police and prosecutors have revealed some of the evidence in the case, but a new court document shows a large number of files are still under seal and being kept secret from the public.

"I think they are turning over an awful lot mostly out of an abundance of caution," said Jim Trainum, a former D.C. police homicide detective with experience investigating complicated murder cases. "There has been a lot of controversy recently about prosecutors intentionally or unintentionally not turning over evidence that might help the defense, and in this case, they are turning over what they can turn over and they are turning it over early."

D.C. mansion murders suspect indicted on 20 felony counts

Last Updated Feb 18, 2016 10:45 AM EST

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The man accused of killing four people inside a Washington, D.C. mansion after holding them against their will for hours has been indicted on 20 felony counts, according to the office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.

The indictment, returned by a D.C. Superior Court grand jury Wednesday, charges Daron Wint with counts including first-degree murder while armed, burglary, kidnapping, extortion, arson, and theft, prosecutors say. He's accused of killing forty-six-year-old business executive Savvas Savopoulos; his 47-year-old wife, Amy; their 10-year-old son, Philip; and the family's housekeeper, Veralicia Figueroa in May of 2015.

The indictment includes 12 counts of first-degree murder while armed, prosecutors say, including four counts of first-degree murder while armed in the course of a kidnapping; four counts of first-degree murder while armed in the course of a burglary, and four counts of first-degree pre-meditated murder while armed. The indictment specifies "aggravating circumstances," including a finding that the murders were especially heinous, atrocious or cruel, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Wint also faces one count each first-degree burglary, extortion, arson, and first-degree theft. The indictment was announced by U.S. Attorney Channing Phillips and D.C. Metropolitan Police Department chief Cathy Lanier.

Daron Wint Pleads Not Guilty to 20 Felonies in Brutal DC Mansion Slayings (Video)

Indictment charges Darron Wint with 12 counts of first-degree murder

The suspect in the gruesome deaths of a couple, their young son and their housekeeper pleaded not guilty Friday to the 20 felony charges he's facing in the brutal crime.

The victims -- Savvas Savopoulos, 46; his wife, Amy, 47; their 10-year-old son, Philip, and housekeeper Veralicia Figueroa, 57 -- were found dead inside the Savopoulos family's multi-million-dollar Northwest D.C., mansion last May.

A grand jury returned a 20-count indictment Wednesday against Darron Dellon Dennis Wint, including 12 counts of first-degree murder while armed.

Members of both the Figueroa and Savopoulos families were in court during Friday's arraignment for Wint.

He is next due back in court for a hearing May 20.

It’s Been a Year Since DC’s Mansion Murders. Why Hasn’t Anyone Else Been Arrested?

By 8 o’clock in the morning, the driveway of Savvas and Amy Savopoulos’s house in DC’s Massachusetts Avenue Heights was usually empty.

Amy normally hopped into the Porsche to drive her ten-year-old son to St. Albans, just up the road. Savvas would take either the Range Rover or the Bentley to American Iron Works, his family’s construction firm in Hyattsville.

Last May 14, though, neighbors noticed something unusual along Woodland Drive, an elegant winding road lit by azaleas and dogwoods: The cars were still in the driveway.

Massachusetts Avenue Heights is an elite enclave where people notice little things. Just across Massachusetts Avenue from the Vice President’s residence, it’s home to political royalty, corporate brass, and ambassadors. Homes behind the wrought-iron fences, tall hedges, and brick walls run as high as $12 million. Little changes.

~Snipped~

So many questions remain open: Could one person have held four captives for so long? If not, who were the other assailants? How could an assailant spend so much time in a house and leave only a single drop of saliva? And yet—at least beyond the friends, neighbors, and children in Massachusetts Avenue Heights—the mystery behind what many seasoned cops consider the most gruesome crime against a family in DC history is little discussed.

Now, with Wint preparing to face trial on 20 counts—including arson, kidnapping, and murder that was “especially heinous, atrocious, and cruel”—the questions are more than salacious. If the detective is right, it means killers are on the loose.
