Drew Peterson police pension hearing begins
Saturday April 25, 2015 12:01 AM
CHICAGO—Bolingbrook officials held a hearing Friday to determine whether former Sgt. Drew Peterson should lose his annual $79,000 police pension after being convicted of murdering his wife, but they haven’t come to any conclusions yet.
...The five-member pension board — which includes three of Peterson’s former law enforcement co-workers — will act almost like jurors in the case. At Atwell’s request, the board has filed a subpoena for Peterson to give a deposition in prison. Greenberg objected, and the board will meet again in June to determine whether it has this authority.

Drew Peterson's lawyers appealing murder conviction
Published May 21, 2015 · Associated Press
OTTAWA, Ill. – A state appeals court is hearing arguments from lawyers seeking to overturn the murder conviction of former suburban Chicago police sergeant Drew Peterson in his third wife's 2004 death.
The Chicago Tribune reports that attorneys for the ex-Bolingbrook officer are challenging his 2012 conviction. They claim prosecutors shouldn't have been allowed to present secondhand evidence and Peterson's previous lawyer provided ineffective counsel.
The arguments are Thursday in the Third District Court of Appeals.

Drew Peterson Case Hits Appellate Court -- Lawyer Says 'Boneheaded' Move Should Trigger New Trial
By Joseph Hosey (Patch Staff) May 21, 2015
...Brodsky and Peterson, along with a Florida-based publicist, entered into a media contract soon after the disappearance of Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, in October 2007, Greenberg said. He argued that the ill-conceived idea to make money and gain fame was improper and against Peterson’s self-interest.
Greenberg also criticized Brodsky’s decision to call Savio’s divorce attorney, Harry Smith, to the witness stand. Brodsky had apparently hoped Smith’s testimony would sully Stacy’s character. Instead, Smith repeatedly hammered home to the jury that Stacy told him Peterson killed Savio. Jurors later said Smith’s testimony clinched the guilty verdict.
“It was so frankly boneheaded to do,” Greenberg said of Brodsky’s trial strategy.

Peterson accused of accused of trying to murder prosecutor from behind bars

(CNN) - If you thought wife murderer Drew Peterson was done with the legal system, think again.
Peterson is now accused of trying to murder -- from behind bars -- the prosecutor who put him there. This summer, he's scheduled to be back in a courtroom, this time on two counts of murder solicitation.
Peterson has pleaded not guilty to the charges that he hired someone to kill James Glasgow, a renowned Illinois prosecutor who won the conviction in 2012 that sent Peterson away for 38 years. The former Chicago-area police sergeant was found guilty of murdering his ex-wife, Kathleen Savio.
To this day, questions still loom about Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy Cales Peterson, who disappeared in October 2007.
A CNN special report, "Married to a Murderer: The Drew Peterson Story," takes a fresh look at how Peterson went from a police officer to a convicted killer.

CHESTER – A southern Illinois judge closed the start of a pretrial hearing for convicted murder Drew Peterson in a murder-for-hire case to consider whether prosecutors can submit certain evidence of his past conduct.
The former suburban Chicago police officer is accused of soliciting a prison inmate to kill Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow, the prosecutor who helped convict Peterson of killing his third wife. Peterson has pleaded not guilty in the case.
The Randolph County Herald-Tribune reported the trial judge closed the Tuesday hearing for more than one hour at the request of Peterson’s defense lawyer to avoid influencing the opinions of potential jurors in advance of the mid-November trial.
The judge did not immediately rule on several motions submitted by lawyers on both sides.

Peterson’s attorney wants recordings tossed in murder-for-hire case
September 17, 2015
The lawyer representing Drew Peterson in a murder-for-hire case will argue later this month that recordings of conversations should be barred from the trial.
...Lucas Liefer, Peterson’s attorney, has filed a motion raising concerns about the way the eavesdropping orders were obtained, including the authorization form signed by Glasgow, the target of the alleged murder-for-hire plot; the judge meeting with the informants nearly three months before the application for the eavesdrop was filed; and documents missing from the sealed eavesdrop file.
“The State’s actions of impropriety on almost every level in pursuing the eavesdropping order offends society’s sense of fair play and decency,” Leifer wrote. “The conduct of the state’s attorney, chief deputy and chief judge shocks the conscious to the extent that justice can no longer be served in this proceeding.”
“Defendants can make any allegation they wish,” said Randolph County State’s Attorney Jeremy Walker. “We will be happy to prove the veracity of those recordings in court.”
...Liefer and Walker will argue the motion in the latest case on Sept. 29 before Randolph County Judge Richard Brown.

Drew Peterson loses appeal; court upholds murder conviction, sentence
By Stacey Baca
Updated 2 hrs 4 mins ago
OTTAWA, Ill. (WLS) -- An Illinois appellate court affirmed Drew Peterson's conviction and sentence on Friday. The former Bolingbrook police sergeant is serving a 38-year sentence for the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio.
...In the Savio case, the third district court wrote this week that the "...evidence was sufficient to prove defendant guilty beyond a reasonable doubt..."
...Peterson's attorney already plans to appeal. Nick Savio says he expected that, and still feels confident.
"They have failed three times already now, and I have faith they will fail a fourth time," Nick Savio said.
Peterson's attorney said he will file an appeal with the Illinois Supreme Court by the end of the year.

Snip The Illinois Supreme Court has agreed to hear an appeal in the case of Drew Peterson, the former police officer who was convicted in 2012 of murder in the death of his third wife.
Lawyers for Peterson asked the high court to toss the murder conviction earlier this year, arguing he was denied a fair trial due to the use of so-called hearsay statements and other allegedly critical errors during court proceedings in Will County.
Just getting a hearing is rare: legal experts say the Illinois Supreme Court rejects 95 percent of requests.
"It's a big deal. Realistically, I would be somewhat optimistic if I was Mr. Peterson," said Richard Kling, a clinical professor of law at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law. End Snip

Brown hears arguments on Peterson motions
By Pete Spitler, Staff Writer
Posted Apr. 22, 2016 at 2:42 PM
With less than a month to go before jury selection for his murder-for-hire trial, Drew Peterson was back in Randolph County Court on Friday.
Attorneys on both sides of the case argued three motions - to limit the impeachment of Individual A, to suppress evidence from allegedly inaudible portions of the recordings at the center of the case, and to clarify a decision from Circuit Court Judge Richard A. Brown on a motion from April 2015.
...During a lengthy discussion on Friday, Brown allowed the prosecution to use Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow - who prosecuted Peterson’s original murder conviction and whom Peterson is accused of trying to find someone to kill - as a witness during the prosecution’s opening statements of the trial.
...The parties agreed to return for a final pretrial conference on May 13 at 9 a.m.

Recordings: Drew Peterson tried to keep authorities guessing on wife's whereabouts
By Matthew Walberg
Chicago Tribune
May 25, 2016, 1:11 PM |CHESTER, Ill.
Drew Peterson believed authorities were listening to conversations with his murder trial attorneys and would say things about his missing wife's whereabouts to keep them guessing, according to recordings played in court Wednesday.
Peterson is on trial in Randolph County, accused of trying to hire a hit man to kill Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow. Menard Correctional Center inmate Antonio Smith worked with authorities to record conversations between Smith and Peterson over several days in November 2014.
~Snipped~
In a conversation from Nov. 16, 2014, Peterson talked about making authorities think Stacy Peterson was in Peoria and that she might show up to testify at his murder trial.
"You know how many times me and my lawyer knew they were listening? And we were telling them like, 'She's in Peoria,'" Drew Peterson says on the recording played in court Wednesday.
"The next week, they were there. They were tearing up (expletive) Peoria."
Peterson then says he "had them believing Stacy was going to come and testify" and claims Glasgow and the prosecution team were "on the edge waiting for this to happen."

CHESTER, IL — The prison snitch who secretly recorded Drew Peterson for the FBI claimed the disgraced former cop told him he didn’t care whether or not a prosecutor’s killing was done “execution style.”
The snitch, 25-year-old Antonio “Beast” Smith, failed to catch that damning statement on the recording device he had been provided by the FBI. So far, after three days and hours of recorded conversations between Peterson, Smith and other prisoners, Peterson has yet to order Glasgow’s murder.
