A 5-year-old boy from Colorado City, Arizona, was reported missing Thursday from a Coconino County campsite, authorities said.
At about 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jerold Williams was reported missing from a campsite about 12 miles south of Jacobs Lake near Highway 67 off of Forest Service Road 241 in the Kaibab National Forest.
The campsite is in a remote location near a few small ponds at an elevation of about 7,000 feet. Gerry Blair of the Coconino County Sheriff's Department said that there is no cellphone reception in the area so crews are establishing a satellite phone system to help them communicate with each other and with Flagstaff personnel.
Coconino County sheriff's deputies spoke with the missing child's mother who said she and her son were with 15 to 20 other friends and family members camping in the area. At around 1:30 in the afternoon, the pair were 100 to 200 yards away from the camp site and the boy was chasing grasshoppers when his mother lost sight of him, she said. She and other members of the camping group searched for Jerold for four hours before they decided to call authorities, according to CCSO.

Searchers combed the area where Jerold was believed to be missing from Thursday night on foot and in vehicles driving on dirt roads. There is concern that the boy was outside overnight when it was chilly.
Jerold Joseph Williams is described as a 5-year-old white male who is approximately 3 feet 6 inches tall who weighs roughly 35 pounds, authorities said. He has brown eyes and brown hair that is cut very short. Jerold's mother described him as having a thin build and a light complexion. Jerold had visible facial abrasions and was last seen wearing a size 4 gray or tan shirt and a pair of size 4 blue jeans, hiking boots and white, long underwear.
Anyone with information regarding the possible location of Jerold Williams or the circumstances leading up to his disappearance is urged to call the Coconino County Sheriff's Office.

Multiple agencies have been searching for the boy since he was reported missing, working overnight from the ground and the air.
The search for 5-year-old Jerold Williams continues in the northern part of the Kaibab National Forest after the boy was reported missing on Thursday evening. According to the Coconino County Sheriff's Department, Williams wondered off from his family's campsite located about 12 miles south of Jacobs Lake in a heavily wooded area near the entrance to the north rim of the Grand Canyon.
"We have no indication there’s been any foul play or anything suspicious," said Sergeant Aaron Dick of the Coconino County Sheriff's Department's Search and Rescue unit.
Multiple agencies have been searching for the boy since he was reported missing, working overnight from the ground and the air. On Friday, heavy rain, lightning and temperatures in the mid-50s slowed operations and presented increased dangers for the missing boy and search crews. Authorities are working a few leads, including a foot print, and are hopeful they will find him.
~Snipped~
The search will continue overnight into Saturday where the weather is expected to clear up. Williams is described as 3'6" inches, weighing 35 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a tan or grey t-shirt and blue jeans.
The Coconino County Sheriff's Department is asking anyone who may have seen the child to contact them at (928) 774-4523.

ST. GEORGE – The search continues Saturday for 5-year-old Jerold Joseph Williams who was reported missing Thursday by his family while camping in an area about 12 miles south of Jacob Lake in Arizona’s Kaibab National Forest.
Coconino County Sheriff’s Office posted a notice Friday night on its Facebook page that the case is still active and ongoing with ground and air resources. The post noted that radio and phone communication is limited in the search area, which may account for limited updates.
The Jacob Lake camping area where Jerold went missing is located near Highway 67 off of Forest Service Road 241.
The typical Kaibab National Forest area is high mountainous area, Kane County Director of Emergency Services Alan Alldredge said.
~Snipped~
According to a Friday release from the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, Jerold and his mother were approximately 100-200 yards from the unimproved campsite they were using. Jerold was chasing grasshoppers when she lost sight of him.
The group of 15-20 family members and friends searched for Jerold for four hours before calling authorities at 5:30 p.m. MST., according to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office release.
~Snipped~
No indication has been reported that authorities suspect foul play, but preserving evidence would be something any command of a search and rescue operation would consider, Alldredge said.
“Maybe that’s the cop in me,” he said, “everything is always a crime scene until you rule it otherwise, everything is: preserve evidence, you treat it cleanly.”

Deputies described Jerold as 3 feet, 6 inches tall, 35 pounds with short brown hair and brown eyes. His mother said he has a thin build and a light complexion. He was last seen wearing jeans, hiking boots, and a gray or tan shirt, the Sheriff's Office said.
U.S. Air Force helicopters with night vision equipment will continue scouring the rugged terrain in a remote area north of the Grand Canyon, Sheriff's Office spokesman Gerry Blair said. Community volunteers, law-enforcement officers, state, local and federal agency personnel and specialized search and rescue teams all worked to find Jerold on Sunday.
A team of nine Air Force Pararescuers have been providing detailed night searches with thermal imaging and infrared systems trying to locate the boy. An additional air resource was provided on Sunday by a Maricopa County Search and Rescue member with a privately owned helicopter.
~Snipped~
With nightfall approaching by the time authorities were notified, initial search efforts focused on driving roads in the area and setting up a perimeter, Blair said.
“We didn’t get this thing until 5:30 p.m (Thursday),” Blair said. “We did as much as we could with both operations on the ground and in the air, but we were short on daylight.”
Blair said it’s not unusual for families to not immediately contact law enforcement if a child is lost.
“We don’t get an immediate call because they think they can find him,” he said.

Blair said it’s not unusual for families to not immediately contact law enforcement if a child is lost.
“We don’t get an immediate call because they think they can find him,” he said.

JACOB LAKE, AZ (KPHO/KTVK) - More than 400 searchers, many of them volunteers, continued scouring an area south of Jacob Lake in Coconino County Sunday for a missing 5-year-old boy.
The Coconino County Sheriff's Office was alerted about the disappearance of Jerold Joseph Williams at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
Many of the volunteers are from Colorado City. They joined law enforcement officers, state, local and federal agency personnel and specialized search and rescue teams deployed in the area of Highway 67 off of Forest Service Road 241.
They are conducting line and grid searches.

Jerold apparently was with his mom and 15 to 20 friends and family members at an unimproved campsite about 12 miles south of the lake. The area lies within the northern portion of the Kaibab National Forest.

CCSO said it does not need additional volunteers at this time, but the agency is taking names should that change.
If you would like to be on that list or, more importantly, if you know anything about where Jerold might be, call CCSO at 928-226-5012.
Anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts are asked to call the Coconino County Sheriff's Office at 928-774-4523 or 1-800-338-7888. Here's the number for Silent Witness: 928-774-6111.

5 days missing: Search continues for 5-year-old Jerold; family asks for prayers (Video)

JACOB LAKE, Ariz. – Search efforts continue near Jacob Lake for 5-year-old Jerold Williams, a Colorado City boy who has been missing in Kaibab National Forest since Thursday afternoon.
“We are here checking people in for the fifth day of our search,” Gerry Blair, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office public information officer, said Monday morning.
Nothing conclusive has been found so far in the search for Jerold. Family members of the boy said Sunday night that searchers found a child’s footprints, but it is unknown whether they were Jerold’s.
An area was also found where somebody had bedded down for the night; but, again, it is not known at this time whether that somebody was the little boy.

Autopsy: 5-year-old Arizona boy likely died from exposure

JACOB LAKE, Ariz. — A 5-year-old Arizona boy found dead five days after vanishing from a campsite north of the Grand Canyon likely died from exposure, authorities said Tuesday.
The Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office in Flagstaff performed an autopsy on Jerold Joseph Williams a day after his body was found by a search crew off a forest service road.

"He was found fully clothed with no obvious external injuries and there was no evidence of foul play indicated at the scene," county sheriff's spokesman Gerry Blair said in a statement.
"The weather had turned inclement early during the time he was missing" and the medical examiner's preliminary findings "appear to be accidental death due to environmental exposure," Blair added. "Based on the environmental conditions Jerold was exposed to, it is unlikely he survived the first night."
Blair said the boy's body was found around 4:30 p.m. Monday by a group of volunteer searchers from Colorado City.
The group was driving in a pickup truck along Forest Service Road 240 when they spotted a body on the ground around 15 to 20 feet off the road.
The body was found nearly 4 miles from the place the boy was last seen.
