Authorities in West Virginia say a 9-month-old sexual assault victim has died.  Jackson County Sheriff Tony Boggs said the girl died of her injuries at a hospital Wednesday.

Thirty-two-year-old Benjamin Taylor of Cottageville was charged Monday with first-degree sexual assault. Taylor is the boyfriend of the victim's mother but is not the child's father.

In a horrific turn of events, a 10-month-old girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted by her mom's boyfriend has died.

Now little Emmaleigh's family is left to make funeral arrangements for a child they will remember as the "most pleasant baby in the world."

The Adkins family calls alleged murderer Benjamin Taylor a monster. He has been charged in the child's death after police say he sexually assaulted her inside their family home.

On Monday, Emmaleigh's mother discovered her daughter's bloody and swollen body on the basement floor and called 911, WSAZ-TV reports.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- News that baby Emmaleigh Barringer died rocked her family Wednesday, even though they knew early on her brain damage was so severe only a miracle would save her.

"The only way justice is going to be served is if he feels every ounce of pain that he caused her too," explained Danielle Adkins.

Adkins is a first cousin of Emmaleigh's mother. The woman found her daughter on the basement floor Monday at her home in Ripley.

The baby girl was bloody and swollen. Left for dead after being physically and sexually assaulted.

Emmaleigh Barringer murder

Emmaleigh Barringer was murdered in what West Virginia police have called the most brutal case of sexual assault they had ever seen, and now the reeling family members of the 9-month-old girl are speaking out.

Barringer died on Wednesday, two days after the baby’s mother found her naked and bloodied body in the basement of their home. Police allege that 32-year-old Benjamin Taylor, the boyfriend of the girl’s mother, was responsible for sexually assaulting the girl and then leaving her helpless and alone.

On Thursday morning, shortly before authorities upgraded the the charges against Taylor to include murder, Emmaleigh’s family released their first public statement on her death.

We're learning new details about the gruesome death of a 9-month-old baby.

On Thursday, Taylor made his first court appearance, where we learned more about the alleged circumstances surrounding her death.

Taylor's girlfriend told deputies she found him in the basement with the toddler on Monday.

It was dark, and she allegedly found her boyfriend shirtless, his pants unzipped.

Emmaleigh meantime was found lying naked and unresponsive on a pile of blankets and laundry. Her body was previously described by investigators as being swollen and covered in blood.

Benjamin Taylor is charged with first degree murder after he allegedly sexually assaulted Emmaleigh Barringer.

The baby was rushed to the hospital for treatment. Doctors reportedly told investigators that Emmaleigh had been strangled and suffered extensive head injuries.

The baby died in her mother's arms on Wednesday.

Murder charge after infant girl dies following sexual assault

RIPLEY, W.Va. - A man accused of sexually assaulting a 9-month-old baby is now charged with murder in the child’s death.

CBS affiliate WOWK reports that 32-year-old Benjamin Taylor was charged with first-degree murder after the girl died of her injuries at a hospital Wednesday. Taylor is the boyfriend of the victim’s mother, but isn’t the child’s father.

He was initially charged Monday with first-degree sexual assault.

A criminal complaint shows the baby, Emmaleigh Barringer, had extensive bleeding. The complaint says the injuries indicated a violent sexual assault, as well as shaking or striking of the face.

Some news media are reporting that Emmaleigh is 10 months old; some are reporting she was 9 months old.

I read the police report and law enforcement state Emmaleigh was 9 months old.

Vigil held in Pasadena for infant killed in sex assault

PASADENA, Md. (WBFF) -- A 10-month-old girl is dead after what investigators are calling the worst sexual assault case seen in decades.

The suspect is Benjamin Taylor, who was dating the victim’s mother.

In Anne Arundel County, loved ones came together in Anne Arundel County Friday night for a candlelight vigil to remember the child. They gathered at Riviera Beach Park in Pasadena, many of them with mixed emotions.

“It’s heartbreaking,” said Denise Macdonald, a family friend. “It’s heart-wrenching. No mother should have to go through this.”

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — A petition to publicly hang Benjamin Taylor, the West Virginia man accused of brutally sexually assaulting a 10-month-old girl who died this week, was removed from the White House's website Friday after receiving tens of thousands of signatures.

The website did not specify a reason beyond stating that the petition violated its terms of participation. It was not immediately clear when the petition was taken down, but it had received at least 50,000 signatures before being removed.
