DOVER, N.H. — A martial arts instructor active in community theater was charged Saturday in the death of a 19-year-old University of New Hampshire student who disappeared days earlier.

Elizabeth “Lizzi” Marriott is believed to be dead, and law enforcement officials continued to search for her body, Assistant Attorney General James Vara said Saturday. Her car was found in a parking lot on campus in Durham.

Police charged Seth Mazzaglia, 29, of Dover, with second-degree murder, but Vara declined to say how the two knew each other or what led to his arrest.

DOVER, N.H. (AP) — A martial arts instructor active in community theater was charged Saturday in the death of a 19-year-old University of New Hampshire student who disappeared days earlier.

Elizabeth ‘‘Lizzi’’ Marriott, a marine biology major who volunteered at the New England Aquarium, is believed to be dead and law enforcement officials continued to search for her body, Assistant Attorney General James Vara said Saturday.

Seth Mazzaglia, 29, of Dover, who’s charged with second-degree murder, knew Marriott, Vara said, but he declined to say how or what led to Mazzaglia’s arrest. He said police had ‘‘credible’’ information leading them to believe Marriott is dead, though he wouldn’t elaborate.

‘‘This is the worst parents nightmare, a missing child and with an unfavorable outcome,’ Marriott’s family said in a statement Saturday. The family asked for prayers for rescue personnel who are looking for their daughter, saying they need to ‘‘bring her home.’’

University of New Hampshire student Elizabeth 'Lizzi' Marriott vanished on her way to visit a friend on Tuesday - police now believe she is dead

A 29-year-old aspiring model and actor who is also believed to be a martial arts expert with a black belt in karate has been charged with the killing of 19-year-old University of New Hampshire student Elizabeth 'Lizzi' Marriott.

Although her body has not yet been found, police announced that Marriott is believed to be dead, Assistant Attorney General James Vara said on Saturday.

And today, Seth Mazzaglia, 29, of Dover, was charged with the second-degree murder of the missing student as her distraught family were tragically told to call off their frantic search.

Aspiring actor and model Seth Mazzaglia is scheduled to appear on Monday morning at Dover District Court on a second degree murder charge.

During a press conference today to announce Mazzaglia's arrest, Assistant Attorney General James Vara said that the Dover Police Department have gathered enough credible information to believe that Marriott is dead - although they have not located her body.

A Dover, N.H., martial arts instructor has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the disappearance of missing University of New Hampshire student Elizabeth Marriott, a 2011 Westboro High School graduate.

In Westboro tonight, a vigil for Ms. Marriott, 19, was held at Bay State Commons Park Pavilion in downtown Westboro. Hundreds were on hand.

Seth Mazzaglia, 29, is scheduled to be arraigned in Dover on Monday in connection with Ms. Marriott's death.

Authorities are still looking for Ms. Marriott's body, according to Susan Morrell, senior assistant New Hampshire attorney general. Her car, a tan 2001 Mazda Tribute, has been found in a UNH parking lot in Durham.

“We are continuing to search for her body in the area by Pierce Island,” he reiterated. “We have information we are investigating at this point.”

Police investigated this piece of information beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. Friday night. Portsmouth and state police had Prescott Park cordoned off with yellow police tape and the bridge leading to Peirce Island was also blocked off by police cruisers.

Although news agencies were amassing at the scene and reporting police expected to recover a body in the area, those attempts Friday night were unsuccessful. Saturday's attempts to locate Marriott's body in this same area were also fruitless.

Citing an ongoing investigation, Vara offered minimal details in terms of Mazzaglia's role in Marriott's disappearance. Although he stated the two knew each other, he could not provide information such as Mazzaglia's address or where he works. Mazzaglia is a UNH alumnus.

Vara also declined to address whether police presence at an apartment on Mill Street in Dover late Friday night was also linked to Marriott's disappearance. On Friday, Marriott's uncle, Anthony Hanna, told Foster's his niece was heading to an apartment on Mill Street Tuesday night but never arrived.

“This is still an active and ongoing investigation,” Vara said, surrounded by representatives from the state police, attorney general's office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. “We will continue with any and all resources available to us.”

The Portsmouth police crime scene van and police cruisers left Peirce Island just after 4 p.m. Saturday and reopened the island to the public.

A frantic search that began after the 19-year-old marine biology student disappeared Tuesday night turned into a criminal investigation by Saturday, when authorities announced the arrest of Seth Mazzaglia, 29, who listed his address on his personal website as 1 Mill St., Apt. 341, Dover.

Mazzaglia, described by those who knew him as a man with an “odd” and “quirky” side, was charged with second-degree murder. He is a 2006 UNH graduate who knew Marriott, authorities said.

Assistant Attorney General James Vara would not confirm how the two were acquainted, but it's believed that Mazzaglia is connected to a female friend of Marriott's who lives at a Mill Street apartment in Dover. It's the same friend who family members said Marriott planned to visit after her class at UNH Tuesday night, but never showed up.

WESTBORO — Elizabeth “Lizzi” Marriott's violent death should not define her life, pastor John W. Taylor of the First United Methodist Church told his congregation yesterday.

The people in the pews included Robert E. Marriott, Ms. Marriott's father, who was sitting at the back of the church. He had met Rev. Taylor one day earlier, when the pastor prayed with Ms. Marriott's family and friends after they learned 19-year-old Ms. Marriott had been murdered. The group Saturday had been planning to drive to New Hampshire to search for Ms. Marriott, a University of New Hampshire student who had been missing since Tuesday evening.

DOVER — The day before he was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the disappearance of University of New Hampshire student Elizabeth "Lizzi" Marriott, Seth Mazzaglia was making suggestions about which video game someone should buy.

A picture of Mazzaglia has begun to emerge that suggests he was living his regular life while Marriott's family, friends and police from multiple communities frantically searched for the missing 19-year-old. Mazzaglia, 29, of Dover, was arrested Saturday and charged in the death of Marriott, even though authorities have yet to locate her body.

Mazzaglia is an accomplished actor, fight choreographer and martial artist, and his arrest has sent shock waves throughout the local theater community. Craig Faulkner, producing artistic director at Seacoast Repertory Theatre, said he knew Mazzaglia and had actually ran into him Friday at the Best Buy in Newington. Mazzaglia was working at the store, and Faulkner said that based on Mazzaglia's recommendation, Faulkner purchased a video game for the Xbox 360 titled "Dragon's Dogma."

Since Lizzi Marriott's body hasn't been found, I'm wondering what evidence is there to suggest that she was strangled or suffocated by the accused, Seth Mazzaglia.

Other than the Judge saying that it was the manner in which she was murdered, there isn't any other information to indicate how the authorities arrived to that conclusion.

I also wonder if Mazzaglia's apartment is the primary crime scene, and what kind of evidence the police was able to collect during an extensive search of the place.

I'm very puzzled by the fact that he has been charged with second degree murder without a body. There must exist sufficient evidence for him to be held without bail.

I would like to hear (read) everyone's input/opinion on this particular case.

DOVER, N.H. - A handcuffed Seth Mazzaglia, 29, of Dover, N.H., this morning appeared emotionless as Judge Stephen M. Morrison read the charge against him of second-degree murder in the death last week of Westboro native Elizabeth “Lizzi” Marriott.

Associate Attorney General Jane Young requested no bail because the charge holds a possible sentence of up to life in prison.

“I understand that (Mr. Mazzaglia) was not going to ask for bail at this time,” Ms. Young added.

DOVER, N.H. — The search for Elizabeth “Lizzi” Marriott will continue until her body is found, Associate Attorney General Jane Young said during a press conference this afternoon outside of the Dover District Court.

Ms. Young said the slaying was not random and Ms. Marriott and Ms. Mazzaglia knew each other. Both worked at the Target store in Greenland.

In the circumstances surrounding her death, she said Mr. Mazzaglia showed “extreme indifference to human life,” but would not elaborate on what is known about the alleged murder.

Ms. Young said “credible information” investigators received led them to focus the search for her body at a lookout point at Peirce Island in Portsmouth, N.H. Elizabeth “Lizzi” Marriott, a sophomore at UNH, was strangled and/or suffocated in the Dover apartment of Seth Mazzaglia, 29, Tuesday, Oct. 9, according to the second-degree murder complaint filed against Mazzaglia. According to Assistant N.H. Attorney General Jane Young, Mazzaglia’s apartment is located at 1 Mill St.

At the arraignment, Judge Stephen Morrison said the charge alleges Mazzaglia “recklessly caused the death of Elizabeth Marriott … under circumstances manifested in extreme indifference to the value of human life by strangling her and or suffocating her.”

Mazzaglia will be held without bail at the Strafford County House of Corrections until his probable cause hearing at 10 a.m. on Oct. 29. That hearing will allow the court to hear the basis of the prosecution’s case. The court will then decide if there is enough evidence for a trial; if not, the case will be dismissed.

The charge holds a possible sentence of life in prison.

Sexual encounter part of Lizzi Marriott murder investigation

DOVER — Foster's has learned the murder of University of New Hampshire student Elizabeth Marriott occurred during a sexual encounter.

However, Foster's has been unable to confirm whether the sexual encounter was voluntary or involuntary.

The 19-year-old sophomore was heading to a friend's apartment on Mill Street in Dover the night she disappeared. Family members said she was planning to visit a female friend who she met while working at the Target in Greenland. Family members said the woman lived at the Mill Street apartment with her boyfriend.

Mazzaglia operated an account on the dating website OKCupid.com under the username “DarkKaiser.”

The same user name was used by a 29-year-old Dover, N.H., man on the website FetLife.com, an online meeting place for bondage and fetish enthusiasts. The profile indicates the user was interested in a “lifetime relationship, a play partner, princess by day, slut by night, a sub.”

Young said she could not comment on additional suspects in the case, or reports that Marriott was planning to visit a female friend on the night of Tuesday, Oct. 9

“The police continue to examine evidence gathered to date," she said. "They continue to talk to numerous individuals, and we will continue, again, to make sure we have all of the information,” she said. “And if additional charges against additional people are warranted, they will be brought … We have to see where the evidence takes us.”

Missing UNH Student May Have Died During Sex Encounter

WBZ-TV has confirmed that police are investigating claims that Elizabeth Marriott was suffocated during a group sex encounter with Seth Mazzaglia and another woman.

DOVER, N.H. — A neighbor at the apartment complex where authorities say a 29-year-old man strangled 19-year-old University of New Hampshire student Elizabeth Marriott said she’s haunted by echoes of a blood-curdling scream she heard the alleged night of the senseless killing.

“It’s been emotional, wondering, ‘Was it her?’ ” said the woman, who has lived in the Sawyer Mill Apartments complex since August and refused to give her name. “I’ve been sad. I feel a little withdrawn. I don’t know what to think.”

“The thought of being so close to a violent crime and not realizing what it was, I just feel for that young girl’s family and I hope they find her soon so they can get some closure."

Associate AG: Not enough evidence yet for 2nd arrest in killing of UNH student

PORTSMOUTH — Associate Attorney General Jane Young said Wednesday that authorities do not have enough evidence to charge a second person in connection with the disappearance and death of University of New Hampshire student Elizabeth “Lizzi” Marriott.

“We bring a charge when there's evidence,” Young said. “What I maintain in this case, is if the evidence brings us to the fact that another person was or other persons were involved then other charges would be brought.”

A source within law enforcement speaking on condition of anonymity indicated to the Portsmouth Herald on Tuesday that additional arrests should be expected.

Lizzi Marriott's Body 'Could Be Anywhere'

The lead prosecutor in the Elizabeth Marriott murder case doesn't anticipate any additional arrests unless new evidence surfaces during the investigation.

New Hampshire Associate Attorney General Jane Young said investigators are looking at all angles connected with the murder of the 19-year-old University of New Hampshire student, but they do not have enough probable cause to charge anyone besides Seth Mazzaglia, 29, of Dover, who faces a second degree murder charge.

According to authorities, Marriott was murdered by Seth Mazzaglia, 29, of Dover after they say he strangled and suffocated her inside of his Dover apartment on Oct. 9. When asked Wednesday about media reports that Marriott was involved in a sexual encounter with Mazzaglia at the time of her death, Young said, "We have no comment."

Father of slain UNH student: Hug your parents

DURHAM — Bob Marriott, father of University of New Hampshire student Elizabeth Marriott, urged the university students to hug their parents and “spread the light that is Lizzi” during a vigil and remembrance ceremony held on campus Thursday.

Marriott’s daughter disappeared Oct. 9 and authorities believe she is dead, although her body has yet to be discovered. Seth Mazzaglia, 29, of Dover, has been charged with second degree murder for allegedly strangling and/or suffocating Lizzi Marriott in his apartment at 1 Mill St.

Hundreds of students and others from the UNH community gathered on the Great Lawn outside Thompson Hall to pay respects to Marriott. In coincidental moments that some described as eerie, the clock in the hall’s clocktower chimed 1 p.m. just as a speaker walked away from the podium, and a rush of leaves blew in front of a photo of Lizzi Marriott right at the end of a recording of her singing “Into the West.”

Search for Marriott's body to continue through weekend

PORTSMOUTH — Recovery efforts for the body of University of New Hampshire student Elizabeth Marriott will continue throughout the weekend, Associate Attorney General Jane Young said Friday.

"The search on the water continued (Friday) and will continue over the weekend," Young replied when asked if there were any plans to halt the search.

The search for Marriott's body has lasted throughout the week and has involved boats on the water around Peirce Island in Portsmouth and Maine Marine Patrol conducting aerial surveillance by flying out as far as the Isles of Shoals and along the Rye coastline.

Young has said authorities have "credible information" leading them to search the waters around Peirce Island. Marriott's body is thought to have been dumped there after she was allegedly strangled to death by Mazzaglia.

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — An intense search resumed Monday for the body of University of New Hampshire student Lizzi Marriott.

Investigators said they have evidence that Marriott's body is in the water off Peirce Island in Portsmouth. As Marine Patrol boats combed the area, local twin brothers Conrad and Perry McKinney, 70, said they felt compelled to help out.

"We know all the coves, all the inlets, and I figured the best thing for us to do is to go out there and just put our time in," said Conrad McKinney.

Fish and Game launch planned dive to find 'Lizzi' Marriott's body

PORTSMOUTH — Prescott Park and Peirce Island are closed off to public traffic today due to a planned dive to search for body of college student.

Jane Young, Associate Attorney General in N.H., reports the Fish and Game launched their planned dive today to search for the body of UNH student Elizabeth Marriott after her murder nearly two weeks ago.

“We haven't calculated the expenses yet,” Young, told Foster's Monday as the search for Marriott entered its 11th day following her disappearance Oct. 9.

She said right now “the focus is on finding Lizzi.”

PORTSMOUTH — “In cases where the body of the murder victim is not available the prosecution has the burden to prove that the death occurred,” Charles Putnam, codirector of the Justice Works program at UNH, said, though admitting it doesn't mean a conviction is impossible.

PORTSMOUTH — The dog park at Peirce Island was shut down for a few hours Tuesday afternoon as divers searched offshore for what Associate Attorney General Jane Young described as "items of evidentiary value" in the search for Elizabeth "Lizzi" Marriott.

Underwater divers with New Hampshire Fish and Game joined the search for Marriott, 19, on Tuesday, two weeks after she was allegedly murdered at the hands of Seth Mazzaglia, 29, of Dover in his Sawyer Mill apartment.

Multiple divers were seen around the island, which was partially shut down starting around 11:30 a.m. due to the investigation. Portsmouth police assisted by closing the road to the dog park area of the island, with Sgt. Rich Webb noting that "multiple agencies" were present for the search.

I must wonder if the car's GPS system showed a trip to the waterfront prior to it being abandoned in the parking lot. Perhaps there was evidence in the car of the perps being there as well.Maybe, a telephone text message indicating other evidence?

NEWINGTON, N.H. (AP) — The search for the body of a University of New Hampshire student who disappeared Oct. 9 has expanded to a new section of the Piscataqua River.

The New Hampshire Marine Patrol has been searching the waters around Fox Point in Newington for the body of 19-year-old Elizabeth ‘‘Lizzi’’ Marriott of Westborough, Mass. That’s up the river in tidal waters northwest of where they had been looking, near Peirce Island in Portsmouth.

In NH, authorities to discuss future of search for body of 'Lizzi' Marriott

Associate Attorney General Jane E. Young said this morning authorities will discuss Friday if the search for Elizabeth “Lizzi” Marriott’s body will continue off Peirce Island.

Today, a helicopter and Marine Patrol continue to search the waters, Ms. Young said.

“We have a plan through the end of the week,” she said. “We assess it on a daily basis.”

Authorities have not yet discussed ending the search that is now in day 13, she said, but will look at that option at the end of the week.
