Family of Woman Murdered in Hawaii Call Mystery 'Surreal' (Video)

Dec. 15, 2013

By ABC NEWS via GOOD MORNING AMERICA

The parents of a young California woman murdered in Hawaii and the sister of her missing boyfriend -- now a key suspect in her death -- have called the mystery "surreal" and expressed concern that he was also murdered.

Family members of Brittany Royal, 25, and her boyfriend, 22-year old Boaz Johnson, have broken their silence after the body of Royal was discovered May 28, strangled and dumped in the ocean near Hawaii's Big Island. The couple had been living at a campsite in a remote town in the area, and Royal had told her parents that she was pregnant.

"They were excited about them being pregnant and kind of starting this new adventure and new life," Brittany Royal's mother Julie Royal told ABC News.

A real estate agent told ABC affiliate KITV the two were about to close the deal on 10 acres of land in the lava fields in Kalapana.

Hawaii cops still seek pregnant California woman's killer seven months later

Brittany Jane Royal was two months pregnant when a fisherman found her floating off the coast of Kalapana in late May. Missing but immediately branded a suspect was her boyfriend, Boaz Johnson. Brittany Royal, expectant mother, was killed in Hawaii in May. Her boyfriend, Boaz Johnson has been missing since Royal’s body was found strangled and dumped in the ocean.

Seven months after a pregnant California woman was found dead in the water off Hawaii, her boyfriend, the baby's dad, remains missing — and cops appear no closer to cracking the mysterious case.

Brittany Jane Royal, 25, was two months pregnant when a fisherman found her May 28 floating off the coast of Kalapana, a town known for its lava flows on Hawaii's Big Island. A coroner ruled the yoga teacher, originally from California, had been strangled to death.

Missing but immediately branded a suspect was her boyfriend, Boaz Johnson, now 23, who has not been seen since the day Royal died.

Cops have not relented in their search for Johnson. Last month they named him one of the top three "most wanted" people in Hawaii.

Hawaii Murder Mystery: Pregnant Woman Killed, Boyfriend Missing

by Fox News Insider// Dec 16 2013 // 12:18pm
As seen on America's Newsroom

The family of a murdered pregnant woman is now speaking out about the bizarre mystery surrounding her death. Twenty-five-year-old Brittany Royal had been living with her 22-year-old boyfriend, Bo Johnson, on a Hawaiian campsite before being found strangled to death.

Her body was dumped in the ocean near Hawaii’s Big Island. Johnson is still missing and authorities suspect him in her death.

Julie Royal, Brittany’s mother, doubts that he was involved, citing speculation that both Brittany and Bo were murdered and Bo’s body just hasn’t been found. “In my heart of hearts, I believe that Bo is also dead.”

According to Royal, there was a lot of outrage among locals in the community that Brittany and Bo wanted to purchase ten acres of land and open up a business.

"Where is my nephew?" Sandrino Oliver demanded to anyone who would listen. "Where is he?" …………….The results of Friday's search at the Oliver home were not available in court Tuesday. Vigil to honor slain North Carolina teen turns violent

DEC 20

by The Stream Team

Armed police in Durham, N.C. clashed Thursday night with a group of about 150 people holding a vigil for Jesus "Chuey" Huerta, a 17-year-old who died in custody last month. Local reports said that police arrived in riot gear, used gas to disperse the crowd, and made six arrests after firecrackers were lit and a bottle was thrown.

The following video shows police approaching a group holding a sign that accuses them of killing Huerta.

Huerta was arrested on November 19 by Durham officer Samuel Duncan and died from a gunshot wound in the back of Duncan's patrol car, raising concerns from the community. On November 22, a protest demanding answers from police turned violent.

Durham police chief Jose L. Lopez held a press conference on December 11, saying Huerta died from a self-inflicted gun shot to the head. The gun, according to Lopez, was not owned by the Durham police. Lopez also said that he did not know how the gun ended up in the patrol car, since Huerta had been searched and handcuffed before being put in the back of the car. The case is still under investigation.

~Snipped~

In a statement to the press on Friday afternoon, Huerta's sister Evelin called for Lopez's resignation and a federal investigation:

“The actions of the Durham Police Department, led by Chief Lopez, last night were a tried and true tactic to intimidate and spread fear in our community. The Durham Police cannot be trusted to investigate my brother’s death, and we need a federal investigation. We call on Chief Lopez to resign immediately in light of his leadership that put dozens of armed police on the streets to scare residents and turned a memorial vigil into a war zone last night. We will not be intimidated by Chief Lopez and the Durham police department’s tactics.”

Jahi McMath, Girl Left Brain Dead From Routine Tonsillectomy, To Be Kept On Life Support

Nailah Winkfield, mother of 13-year-old Jahi McMath, cries before a courtroom hearing regarding McMath, Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, in Oakland, Calif. | ASSOCIATED PRESS

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A 13-year-old California girl declared brain dead after complications from a tonsillectomy should be kept on life support for the time being, a judge has ruled.

The family of Jahi McMath says doctors at Children's Hospital Oakland wanted to disconnect life support after Jahi was declared brain dead on Dec. 12.

Friday's ruling by Superior Court Judge Evelio Grillo came as both sides in the case agreed to get together and chose a neurologist to further examine Jahi and determine her condition. The judge scheduled a hearing Monday to appoint a physician.

The girl's family sought the court order to keep Jahi on a ventilator. They left the courtroom without commenting.

After her daughter underwent a supposedly routine tonsillectomy and was moved to a recovery room, Nailah Winkfield began to fear something was going horribly wrong.

SAMANTHA HENRY | December 21, 2013 11:23 AM EST | AP

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Four men have been arrested on charges of murder, conspiracy and other counts in the carjacking death of a man shot in front of his wife outside an upscale mall in northern New Jersey last weekend, authorities said Saturday.

The suspects were identified as 29-year-old Hanif Thompson, of Irvington, and 31-year-old Karif Ford, 32-year-old Basim Henry and 33-year-old Kevin Roberts, all of Newark.

They are accused in the Dec. 15 carjacking and killing of Dustin Friedland outside The Mall at Short Hills. The 30-year-old lawyer from Hoboken was shot in the head in the mall parking garage after being confronted by two carjackers, authorities said. The assailants drove off in his silver Range Rover, which was found the next morning in Newark, about 10 miles from Short Hills.

Husband Wants Pregnant Wife Off Life Support

Erick and Marlise Munoz, both paramedics in Tarrant County, Texas, had talked a lot about end-of-life decisions, including the importance of do-not-resuscitate orders. So when doctors put her on life support after suffering a suspected pulmonary embolism last month, her husband says, he knew her wishes.

Marlise, 33, had lost a brother years before and told her husband she never wanted to be kept alive by machines, he says.

But Marlise is pregnant, and Texas state law puts the rights of a fetus over the wishes of its mother. The baby Marlise is carrying is now closer to 18 weeks, but Munoz says doctors have no idea what effects the oxygen deprivation Marlise has suffered will have if the baby is delivered.

~Snipped~

Marlise, who with her husband has a 1-year-old son, has been on life support at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth since Nov. 26, when Munoz found her collapsed on the living room floor. He performed CPR and then called 911. She never regained consciousness and her husband says she is now "simply a shell."

But the fetus still has a normal heartbeat.

Munoz told ABC News that he knows his desire to end his wife's life support is unpopular with many people

Dead infant found in duffel bag

December 23, 2013 : Updated: December 24, 2013 8:20am

SAN ANTONIO — The body of a dead infant was found in a blue duffel bag Monday afternoon by a recycling center employee sorting items on a conveyor belt.

Officials did not say whether the infant was a boy or girl, but police Sgt. Daniel Gonzales said the infant was believed to be between 1 and 10 days old. If an autopsy shows that the child was killed prior to the body being discarded, the case could become a capital murder investigation, he said.

Gonzales said the East Side recycling center's manifest showed that the baby likely came to the center with items collected between Saturday and noon Monday. The body could have come from San Antonio or an outside county, he said.

This story is so tragic. My heart goes out to this family. The hospital is trying to cover up what ever they did to cause this. I'm happy that the court ruled to keep her alive for the time being.

A San Diego mall parking lot outside of a Macy’s store was the site of a Christmas Eve tragedy that has turned into a bizarre mystery. A 22-year-old woman is dead, and her male companion, also 22, was left critically injured after someone shot the pair as they sat in a car at about 1:15 Tuesday morning, San Diego’s CBS News Channel 8 reported.

A third man vanished without a trace.

So far, police have no idea who shot the pair or why. The identity of the victims only deepens the mystery. The woman, who somehow called 911 before dying though she had been shot in the head as well as the upper body, was Ilona Gregorievna, who goes by the name Ilona Flint, of Provo, Utah

Time short to find new facility for California girl declared brain dead after tonsillectomy

Sunday, December 29, 2013

Associated Press

OAKLAND, CA -- The family of a California girl declared brain dead after complications from tonsil surgery was running out of time Sunday to find a new facility to take her in and keep her on a ventilator.

A judge's ruling will allow Children's Hospital Oakland to remove 13-year-old Jahi McMath from life support at 5 p.m. Monday unless her family appeals.

The family is now pinning its hopes on a New York facility after two California care homes withdrew offers to accept the teen.

~Snipped~

The hospital wants to remove her from life support, but the family said they believe she is still alive.

Hospital spokesman Sam Singer said Sunday in an interview with KRON-TV that Children's Hospital will facilitate a transfer if the family finds an outside physician to insert breathing and feeding tubes.

"We'll do our best, if it is within the confines of things that are legal and medically correct, to be of assistance to them," Singer said.

"At a certain point, they have to be able to look themselves in the eye and realize that this young lady is dead and is not coming back under any circumstances."

That is harsh to say the least. This young lady is their child fps. How can anyone dictate how a family has to come to terms in a case like this. This forced death for this child at this time is uncalled for. Let the family come to terms with it on their own in their own time.
Secondly I hope the family files a malpractice lawsuit against those involved in this case.
I feel very, very sorry for this family.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Legal counsel for a California hospital and the family of a 13-year-old girl declared brain dead after sleep apnea surgery began discussing the possibility of moving her to another facility, after a judge laid out the conditions for such a transfer.

The judge said Friday that the mother of the child may remove her from an Oakland hospital if she assumes full responsibility for the consequences.

It was unknown when the girl might be moved or if she would be, since her family still is trying to finalize where she could be taken and find a medical team to carry out the transfer. A court injunction prohibiting Children's Hospital from removing the ventilator that has kept Jahi's heart pumping since her Dec. 9 surgery expires at 5 p.m. Tuesday, and Dolan said the family would work to get her relocated before then.

Lawyer: Brain dead girl moved from Calif. hospital

By Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The 13-year-old California girl declared brain dead after a tonsillectomy has been taken out of Children's Hospital of Oakland, her family's attorney said late Sunday.

Jahi McMath left the hospital in a private ambulance shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday, Christopher Dolan told The Associated Press.

She was taken by a critical care team while attached to a ventilator but without a feeding tube, Dolan said. Her destination was not immediately disclosed.

~Snipped~

David Durand, the hospital's Chief of Pediatrics, said the girl was released to the coroner. The coroner then released her into the custody of her mother, Nailah Winkfield, as per court order, Durand said in an email.

~Snipped~

The Alameda County coroner's office issued a death certificate for the girl Friday but said the document is incomplete because no cause of death has been determined pending an autopsy.

"They may have issued one but we don't have it. We don't think she's dead," Dolan said. "We got all the necessary legal paperwork in order to get Jahi out of there."

I recall horror stories out of the 1960s.
Soldiers, in body bags and believed to be dead, suddenly moving within the body bag. (My brother-in-law told me of this being almost routine in Vietnam.) The worst case? A young soldier transported back to the USA in a body bag in the cold cargo compartment of the airplane suddenly waking on the autopsy table as they had just cut the femoral artery....he lived! Reports were he had been kept so cold it reduced his vitals beyond the ability of the measuring instruments...

I can understand the reluctance, the hope of the family for their daughter. They are asking for time to determine IF it possible for their daughter to still be alive... miracles have happened.

Blessings for them.

Richard Shahan, pastor arrested for murdering his wife

Published On: Mon, Jan 6th, 2014

Developing Stories - Page 16 Richard-Shahan

A Christian pastor was arrested for the murder of his wife after he was attempting to board a plane to Germany.

Police believe that Richard Shahan, age 53, was attempting to flee to Russia by way of Germany when Homeland Security ICE agents caught him before he boarded an airplane out of the country, WTVF-TV reported.

~Snipped~

Shahan was a pastor at First Baptist Church of Birmingham until he resigned on Dec. 31, the day the new arrest warrant was issued.

“All of us were saddened by the unexpected news that Richard Shahan was arrested by Homeland Security just moments before his planned flight departure for Frankfurt, Germany. There, he was to assume his new role working with the Children’s ministry of Bible Mission International, primarily in Kazakhstan,” read a statement on the church’s Facebook page.

Baptist Preacher Arrested For Wife's Murder

Jan. 5, 2014

By GILLIAN MOHNEY via GOOD MORNING AMERICA

A Baptist preacher has been arrested for his wife's murder after he attempted to board a plane to Germany.

Richard Shahan, of Homewood, Ala., was arrested on New Year's day after customs officials had been instructed to be on the look out for his passport. He was wanted out of Jefferson County, Ala. for homicide, according to an arrest affidavit.

"Once he got over to Germany or Russia, the chances of extraditing him are pretty nil," Homewood Police Chief Jim Roberson told reporters. "We can't get Snowden back, probably wouldn't get him back either."

Shahan was flying out of the Nashville airport when he was stopped by police. He will make his first court appearance at an extradition hearing on Tuesday.

~Snipped~

Shahan's wife Karan was found stabbed to death in their home on July 23. After the murder Shahan was taken into "investigative" custody for 48 hours and questioned by police but never charged.

~Snipped~

Wendell Sheffield, Richard Shahan's attorney, said that Shahan had been public about the planned trip for weeks.

"All that would have had to been done is to tell us that there's a warrant," said Sheffield. "We would have turned him in. Heck, we would have turned his passport in."

The police have yet to officially charge Shahan with the murder of his wife. He is being held without bond.

WORCESTER — Worcester dentist Roger Desilets Jr., charged with manslaughter and assault and battery in his wife's 2011 death at the couple's Princeton home, was released on $5,000 cash bail after entering not-guilty pleas this morning in Worcester Superior Court.

~Snipped~

Dr. Desilets' lawyer, Edward P. Ryan Jr., told Judge James R. Lemire that he and Assistant District Attorneys Daniel J. Bennett and Sarah Richardson, who were not present when the case was called, had agreed that his client's bail be set at $5,000 cash and that the case be continued to Feb. 5.

Assistant District Attorney William E. Loughlin, who stood in for his fellow prosecutors, had asked Judge Lemire to delay the arraignment until Ms. Richardson could be present, but the judge denied the request after Mr. Ryan said he wanted to proceed immediately because of the deteriorating weather conditions.

Several members of Mrs. Desilets' family were in the district attorney's office at the time and missed the arraignment, according to Paul Jarvey, a spokesman for District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.

I thot of little Emma when I read this on Bonnie Minter.

Man starts online campaign to keep his mother's rapist and murderer in prison 37 years after he witnessed the horrifying attack

'He personally raped my mother. He personally shot my mother. He laughed about it as he left the house,” Minter told the New York Post. 'I heard him as he got into the (getaway) van and joked about his sexual prowess. 'He thought it was funny,' Mr Minter added. 'He’s a monster who should never ever get out of prison.' As of Tuesday night, Mr Minter's campaign had nearly reached it's goal of 3,000 signatures. He hopes the petition will stop the parole question once and for all. 'To have to do this every two years is torturous,' Mr Minter told DNAinfo. The last link is the recollection of Jason who was present in the home when his mother and her friend were raped and shot to death. He found his mother and her friend and had to get help. He had a loaded gun put to his head by one of the murderers. Jason is asking the three men continue to serve the life sentences they were given. The convicts families are asking for early release....

Excerpt from last link:

"... I sat with my sister, Lucas and his sister on the bed, frozen in silence. After a few minutes, we heard what I knew had to be gunshots—one, two, three, four shots—but no screaming. The men, I thought, were probably trying to scare our moms. But why? Then I heard footsteps running down the stairs followed by the sound of a car quickly taking off in the driveway.

Good, I thought, they were gone. The other kids and I sat on the bed; we waited for our mothers to come get us. When they didn’t, I decided that, since I was the oldest child there, I would go by myself to the other bedroom, just to make sure that all of the men were really gone. I walked into the room...."

Yarmouth resident Matthew Chicoine charged with attempted murder following alleged attack on pregnant girlfriend

By Robert Rizzuto, The Republican

WEST YARMOUTH — A Yarmouth man is behind bars following what police say was a violent attack on his pregnant girlfriend in front of their young child.

~Snipped~

Around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, police were called to the Tidewater Motor Lodge on Route 28 to investigate a domestic dispute. Upon arrival, police say they found Chicoine enraged, standing in the middle of the room, while the victim was on the bathroom floor.

Police say the victim, who is 5½ months pregnant, reported that Chicoine hit her in the face multiple times, ripped the phone from the wall when she tried to call for help, and choked her to the point of blacking out, twice.

This case seems strange… too many unanswered questions…

Rachel Cyriacks

On Wednesday, the Sanborn County Sheriff wanted to talk with Cyriacks husband, Bradley Cyriacks.

A protection order filed by Rachel Cyriacks in August alleged domestic abuse in the relationship and said the couple was in the middle of a divorce.

The Sanborn County Sheriff says they have talked with Bradley Cyriacks in the last 24 hours. Sheriff Tom Fridley says he is not a suspect and had no information on where his wife might be.

Sanborn County authorities say a 30-year-old Woonsocket woman has been missing for more than a month and they're hoping to talk to her husband about the disappearance.
Rachel Cyriacks was last seen working at a temp job at Performance Pet Products in Mitchell on November 11. Her parents reported her missing Monday.

The 1995 Chevy pickup that Cyriacks was reported to be driving was found at the home that her ex-husband, Bradley Cyriacks, was staying at. Law enforcement looked into that lead, but it was unfounded.

Search resumes for missing 7-week-old Memphis girl

By ADRIAN SAINZ | 17 hours ago | AP

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Police have named as a suspect the mother of a 7-week-old girl who went missing from her home under suspicious circumstances in northeast Memphis.

Aniston Walker was reported missing Thursday morning, and ever since, police have been using cadaver dogs to search homes, backyards and a pond in the neighborhood where she lived with her mother and two siblings. Friday's search proved fruitless, and police were resuming the search on Saturday.

According to police, her mother, 33-year-old Andrea Walker, said she left the baby at home with her 3-year-old son while she took her 5-year-old son to school Thursday. When she returned, the baby was gone, but the 3-year-old was still in the house.

After interviewing Walker, police charged her with neglect and abuse. She is jailed on $500,000 bond.

Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong said she is a suspect in the disappearance.

Pregnant, and Forced to Stay on Life Support

FORT WORTH — The diagnosis was crushing and irrevocable. At 33, Marlise Munoz was brain-dead after collapsing on her kitchen floor in November from what appeared to be a blood clot in her lungs.

More than a month later, Mrs. Munoz remains connected to life-support machines on the third floor of the I.C.U., where a medical team monitors the heartbeat of the fetus, now in its 20th week of development. Her case has become a strange collision of law, medicine, the ethics of end-of-life care and the issues swirling around abortion — when life begins and how it should be valued.

Albuquerque Police are now trying to help find a missing teen girl from Washington thought with an older man, in danger and spotted in the metro-area.

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Albuquerque police are trying to help find a missing teen girl from Washington thought to be with an older man. It's suspected she's in danger and was spotted in the metro area.

Monica Helberg, 16, has been missing for four days and investigators from Washington state believe she was in Albuquerque on Saturday night. Investigators say Albuquerque police also found evidence that she or the man she's thought to be with may have tried to change how they look.

"We don't know where she is, we haven't heard from her, not a call, not a text, not anything,” said Lisa Helberg, Monica Helberg’s mother.

According to sheriff’s deputies in Grant County, Wash., Monica hasn’t been seen since last Wednesday night when she was in her home city of Royal City, Wash.

"She was discovered missing the next morning,” said Kyle Foreman, public information officer for the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

Trial underway for man accused of killing his daughter in 2008

By Steve Schmadeke
Tribune reporter

8:48 p.m. CST, January 14, 2014

Perhaps 20 minutes after she was seen running home with her older brother on an isolated, dead-end street on the South Side where the neighbors all knew each other, 9-year-old Mya Lyons was dead.

She was beaten so badly her skull was fractured and stabbed so violently her organs protruded through a gaping hole in her abdomen.

People were still out on the Auburn-Gresham street the night of July 18, 2008 — a man was walking his dog and a couple were parked outside the home where Mya was staying — but no one saw or heard how the girl who loved pink and had just finished the third grade in west suburban Addison was killed.

One piece still missing from puzzle of fatal theater shooting: Why?

By Steve Almasy and Ashley Fantz, CNN
updated 10:07 PM EST, Tue January 14, 2014

On Tuesday, Curtis Reeves, 71, made his first appearance in court for a charge of second-degree murder. Reeves' attorney, Richard Escobar, tried to persuade Circuit Judge Lynn Tepper that the former police officer was actually the victim in the incident and that Oulson was the "aggressor."

Police said despite Reeves' claim that he was in fear of his safety, this was not a case for Florida's "stand your ground" defense.

"Working with the state attorney's office it was determined that stand-your-ground does not fly here in this case," Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said.

Developing Stories - Page 16 Empty NC: Amanda Hayes trial ( Laura Jean Ackerson murder) starts next week with jury selection on 1/21/14 -

Post by Ann - Tx Thu Jan 16, 2014 10:16 pm

Okay trial watchers . . . . .

The Amanda Hayes trial starts next week in North Carolina with jury selection to begin on 1/21/14.

Judge Donald Stephens will be the presiding judge. He presided over the Grant Hayes trial.

If you watched the Jason Young trial (2012 - found guilty of murdering his wife, Michelle), Judge Donald Stephens was the presiding judge.

I assume WRAL - Raleigh, NC will stream the trial "live" and archive like they did during the Grant Hayes trial a few months ago.

Grant Hayes did a telephone interview with WTVD today.  I posted the Link on Laura Jean Ackerson's thread.  Click this Link:

PD: Mesa teacher punished kindergartner by taking her top off

" ...Officers said Washburn told the girl to take her face out of the shirt and when she did not comply, he went to her and completely removed her shirt, leaving her naked from the waist up in front of her classmates for about 10 minutes.

The girl broke down crying, police said. Washburn eventually returned her clothing.

"Total humiliation," said Daniel Mercado, who has children who attend Adams Elementary. "What is she going to do now - from first grade on? What are the parents going to think of this? Not only her parents but other parents, other parents at the school like myself? I think he went too far. He went way too far." ..."

" ... A profile of Washburn on the school's website quotes Washburn saying, in part:

"Having been certified for foster care and licensed for adoption, I am looking forward to becoming a single father for the first time and am waiting the placement of children in my home. In the meantime, I have enjoyed the opportunity of taking care of several children on a respite basis."..."

Cyber Security Firm Says Target-Style Attacks Are Ongoing Against Six Other US Merchants, More US Merchants May Also Be Under Seige

By Meagan Clark
on January 17 2014 1:13 PM

At least six U.S. retailers were under a massive cyberattack Friday, which employed the same software used late last year to steal credit-card data from some 40 million Target Inc. (NYSE:TGT) customers and personal data from another 70 million Target customers, said cybersecurity firm IntelCrawler.

Andrew Komarov, IntelCrawler’s chief executive, said his firm knows the identity of two of the companies but has not yet publicly disclosed their names. He has been working with law enforcement, Visa Inc. (NYSE:V), and intelligence teams from several banks to combat the cyberattack and identify the stores, as their names are not available through only the public IP addresses.

Neiman Marcus computers were hacked as far back as July: NYT

(Reuters) - Hackers breached the computer networks of luxury department store chain Neiman Marcus as far back as July, an attack that was not fully contained until Sunday, the New York Times reported, citing people briefed on the investigation.

Neiman Marcus said on Friday that hackers may have stolen customers' credit and debit card information, the second cyber attack on a retailer in recent weeks.

Neiman Marcus had said it first learned in mid-December of suspicious activity that involved credit cards used at its stores.

However, in a call with credit card companies on Monday, Neiman acknowledged that the attack had only been fully contained a day earlier, and that the time stamp on the first intrusion was in mid-July, the paper said.

(Reuters) - Target Corp and Neiman Marcus are not the only U.S. retailers whose networks were breached over the holiday shopping season last year, according to sources familiar with attacks on other merchants that have yet to be publicly disclosed.

Smaller breaches on at least three other well-known U.S. retailers took place and were conducted using similar techniques as the one on Target, according to the people familiar with the attacks. Those breaches have yet to come to light. Also, similar breaches may have occurred earlier last year.

SCRAPING MEMORY

Target has not disclosed how the attackers managed to breach its network or siphon off some of its most sensitive data.

The sources who spoke to Reuters about the breaches said that investigators believe the attackers used similar techniques and pieces of malicious software to steal data from Target and other retailers.

One of the pieces of malware they used was something known as a RAM scraper, or memory-parsing software, which enables cyber criminals to grab encrypted data by capturing it when it travels through the live memory of a computer, where it appears in plain text, the sources said.

'Killing fields' families hoping for justice for victims with upcoming murder trial

Updated at 07:44 PM - January 17, 2014

KTRK - Houston, TX

GALVESTON, TX (KTRK) --  New evidence could help solve three cold case murders connected to the notorious "killing fields." The father of one of those victims spoke with abc13 about what this could mean for the families still seeking justice for their loved ones.

Snipped:

Miller's determination could soon pay off at the upcoming trial of Clyde Hedrick, 60. Hedrick was just charged eight months ago with the 1984 murder of Elena Rae Beasom. Prosecutors say they could present evidence tying Hedrick to Laura Miller's murder in 1984, and the 1983 murder of Heide Faye. Both girls were found in the so-called 'killing fields' off I-45.

"I wasn't surprised about the information," Miller said.

Hedrick used to live two doors down from the Millers.

Snipped:

That trial is scheduled for March 24, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 7.

The Texas "Killing Fields" are as scary as the interstate killing of the young college boys whose bodies are usually found in a a body of water near a tavern or bar where the student was last seen socializing with others. Thanks for the updates, Ann. (I had to wonder if the killing of Mickey S could have been related to the Texas killing fields. IIRC, the burnt out truck fit into the vicinity...)

Finally, some exposure on this predator.
Why did this remain hidden so long creating new victims?

'BBC staff ignored up to 1,000 attacks on children by predatory DJ Jimmy Savile' according to new damning report lifting the lid on entire scandal

An unnamed source close to the inquiry told The Observer that the report's conclusions will overshadow the investigation led by Nick Pollard, former head of Sky News, which sought to uncover why the BBC dropped its Newsnight programme on the Savile allegations. The source said: 'It will go right to the heart of how Savile was able to get away with the most heinous of crimes under the very noses of BBC staff for more than 40 years.'
