Toledo police are looking for a 1½-year-old girl who is missing from an East Toledo residence.
Elaina Steinfurth was allegedly last seen Sunday at a residence in the 700 block of Federal Street where her mother -- Angela Steinfurth -- was staying for the night, police said in a report filed about 10 p.m. Sunday.
Police responding to a call of a missing child arrived at the residence about 3 p.m. and were told that Terry Steinfurth, the girl's father, had gone to the address to pick up his two daughters, a 4-year-old and a 1 1/2-year-old, but was allowed access to the 4-year-old only, police said.
Police said Mr. Steinfurth then left and picked up his father to be a go-between to keep things peaceful, with Ms. Steinfurth finally agreeing to allow him to have Elaina.

The days and hours seem to drag in the east Toledo neighborhood, where Elaina Steinfurth was last seen.
"There are no answers and we want answers," Debbie Russeau, a family friend told 13abc.
Toledo Police, the FBI and surrounding departments scoured the area on Tuesday. Officers searched abandoned homes, alley ways and garbage cans looking for signs of the one year old.
"I've been shaking for three days," Angela Steinfurth, Elaina's mother said. "It gets scary the longer we wait. I don't know if she's alive. I just want to know that she is ok."

East Toledo is trying to comfort stunned members of Elaina Steinfurth’s family while a lack of clues into the little girl’s disappearance has forced them to wait for answers.
Five hours before a planned vigil on Tuesday night, one of the family’s friends, Leon Oldham of Toledo, led a short prayer near Federal and Leonard streets. About 50 people stood nearby, including Elaina’s father, Terry Steinfurth.
“I just asked for Elaina’s safety and for her to be returned to the family safely and that she’s blessed and content and protected by the Lord,” Mr. Oldham said.
Elaina’s sister, Kylee, 4, was there too.

TOLEDO, Ohio - It could be a break in the case of a missing east Toledo toddler. A tip on Thursday morning from the family of 18-month-old Elaina Steinfurth led investigators to a full day of combing a spot on the banks of the Maumee river.
The toddler was last see Sunday, according to her mother.
While searching some woods on the East Toledo side of the Maumee River near the High Level Bridge, Angela Steinfurth says she found a diaper that she says is the same brand and size as her daughter wears. Detectives went back to the spot and did not leave for several hours.
The Toledo Fire Department put its boat and divers into the water. Investigators stood on the banks. It's not clear if they have any new evidence. But on Friday 13abc saw investigators take two brown bags of evidence into their vehicle. It's not clear if the diaper was taken away.

Police say they have no new leads in the search for little Elaina Steinfurth. The 18-month-old was last seen Sunday June 2 when her mother says she disappeared during a custody exchange.
TPD says there were no extended search efforts on Saturday because they have no new leads to follow.
There were no more door-to-door or water search efforts on Saturday, though detective and officers were still patrolling the area in hopes of finding new leads.
Elaina's family didn't want to talk on camera, but her grandmother says they are frustrated. They don't understand how Elaina could have disappeared from her home in the 700 block of Federal without being seen.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - No search efforts were made by Toledo Police for missing 1-year-old Elaina Steinfurth over the weekend, so people formed their own citizen search parties and fanned out across the area.
Efforts stretched from East Toledo to Genoa to Curtice, even to Pearson Metropark in Oregon.
Elaina Steinfurth has been missing since Sunday, June 2nd, when her family reported her missing during a custody hand-off.
Today's search was organized by Kim Bundick of Maumee.
She had been involved in similar massive search efforts three years ago for Nevaeh Buchanan, a missing Monroe, Michigan girl who was eventually found murdered.

The toddler was reported missing last Sunday when her father came to pick her up at her mother's home for a custody exchange and her mother could not find the little girl.
Police and the FBI conducted extensive searches throughout the week, including a water search of the Maumee River. But so far, they've found no clues.

Where’s Elaina? Search for toddler enters day 9
by Elizabeth Reed
Posted: 59 mins ago
Nine days have passed since 18-month-old Elaina Steinfurth disappeared from a Toledo home, but community members aren't giving up.
The 18 month old disappeared June 2 after her father came to a Federal Street home to pick her up. Since then, family and community members have gone door to door handing out flyers and posting information on trees.
Search parties continued to canvas East Toledo and an area under the High Level bridge over the weekend, but didn't find any new leads.
Anyone with information that could lead to finding Elaina is urged to contact Crime Stopper at (419)-255-1111.

It bothers me that besides the picture of Elaina when she was younger in the walker, she isn't smiling in any of the other pictures.

Mother of Missing Ohio Toddler Jailed

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - The mother of a missing 1-year-old girl in northwest Ohio has been taken to jail on a felony child endangering charge.
The Lucas County jail said 25-year-old Angela Mories was taken into custody Wednesday. In a Thursday morning press conference, police say interrogation and interviews with Elaina's mom led them to charge her.
Questioning her also led them to Wednesday night's search of homes and a van located on Federal Street, where Elaina was reportedly last seen. Investigators also said that they believe the baby was injured at some point, though they didn't reveal the extent of the injuries she may have suffered.
snipped:
Police got involved in the young girl's disappearance Sunday afternoon when Elaina's father, Terry Steinfurth, showed up at a home in east Toledo to pick up the girl and her older sister. The children had been with their mother, Angela, and her boyfriend Steven King. Terry says Angela had taken the girls to the home, belonging to Steven's mother, Julie King. "She told me she was staying at her father's house," Terry explained, but that wasn't the case. "I went to pick them up Sunday…they told me she was back over [at Julie King's house], where she promised me they weren't going to be."
According to Julie, Angela called Saturday evening, asking if she and the girls could stay at Julie's for the night. Julie tells WTOL 11, Angela claimed they had no place else to go. "I believed everything she told me, I thought she didn't have a place to stay," Julie said. "She lied to us."
Julie says she allowed them to stay the night, but says she didn't see baby Elaina all day Sunday. When Terry came to pick up his daughters, he says Angela allowed their oldest to go with him, but refused to let him see Elaina. He says he persisted, and she refused. That's when he says the children's grandfather, Terry Steinfurth Sr., arrived on scene. He says he wanted to help Terry Jr. get Elaina when Angela wouldn't give her up. Steinfurth Sr. says when he showed up, Angela told him the baby [Elaina] was napping, and she didn't want to wake her. "I heard [Angela] inside, [crying and screaming], ‘I don't wanna give him my baby, I'll never see her again,'" he said. Eventually they talked her into letting them see the baby. "Twenty minutes later, she comes running out, [saying,] ‘The baby's not in the house, the baby's gone.'"

The mother of missing toddler Elaina Steinfurth is in the Lucas County Jail on a child endangering charge.
Angela J. Mories, 26, was booked into the jail at 10:55 p.m. Wednesday.
The charge is a third degree felony.
~Snipped~
Shortly before the arrest, the FBI and Toledo Police Department searched multiple homes in the 600 block of Federal Street for the missing 18-month girl, suspending the search about four hours later.
The search for Elaina at 660 Federal St. -- just blocks from where she was last seen June 2 -- started at about 5 p.m. Most investigators left the scene by 9 p.m. Three other residences alongside that home were also searched.
Authorities did not comment on the search, which included a cadaver dog brought in from Geauga County Sheriff's Office, and a visit from the TPD chaplain. The dog searched a GMC Safari van parked on the street multiple times, before the van was towed away by authorities.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Angela Steinfurth, mother of Elaina Steinfurth, faced a judge in Toledo Municipal Court this morning with tears streaming down her face. She was arraigned on one charge on child endangering.
Judge Robert Christiansen set her bond at $250,000.
Angela was crying while Judge Christiansen read her charge to her for her arraignment.
According to court documents, Angela did admit to officers that she was aware that Elaina sustained a "serious physical injury." The documents go on to say Angela knew Elaina needed medical treatment but failed to ensure she got the necessary medical treatment for that injury.
Elaina Steinfurth still has not been found.

Angela wasn't crying when she was being interviewed at a vigil for Elaina, she was devoid of emotions. But she was crying when she was being arraigned in court this morning.
I just found out that Elaina's mother told the police that Elaina sustained a serious physical injury that necessitated medical treatment and she failed to seek medical attention. These are very disturbing and upsetting news.
I believe now that Elaina is dead and her body was disposed of.

An arrest affidavit filed in the case states that Elaina's mother "did violate her duty of care, protection and support with respect to her minor child [redacted] 18 months of age."
"Steinfurth did admit to law enforcement officers that she was aware that her minor child had sustained serious physical injury and that her minor child required medical treatment ... [Elaina's mother] further admitted that she failed to ensure that her minor child received the necessary medical treatment for that said injury," the document continued.
Angela Steinfurth reportedly called her stepfather, Richard Schiewe, from jail Wednesday night after her arrest. Schiewe has made a grim assessment of the missing child's fate. "Nobody is saying if [Elaina] is alive," Schiewe said. "I told detectives last week we are not going to find her alive and that's what my gut is telling me.

During the news conference at the downtown police Safety Building, police Capt. Wes Bombrys said the investigation is ongoing.
He said Mrs. Steinfurth told investigators Wednesday she knew the girl, Elaina Steinfurth, had been injured and that she did not seek medical attention.
“The condition of the baby and the severity of the injuries, I can't tell ya,” the captain said. “We don't know. The location of Elaina, we still don't know, and that's why we say it's still an ongoing investigation.”
The captain said the investigation is still a missing persons case and has not been reclassified as a homicide.
No other charges have been filed.
The captain declined to comment on who possibly injured the young girl or if Mrs. Steinfurth had any role in injuring the toddler.
Additional charges could be filed, he said.
“We've charged her at this point with what we believe is appropriate,” he said. "Additional charges? Possibly. May not. … Wherever our investigation leads us, we're going to continue searching for her.”

After the arraignment, Mr. Schiewe said his daughter should have cooperated with police from the start.
“My daughter made a huge mistake and she’s got to pay the consequences,” he said.
Mr. Schiewe said he hopes Elaina will be found alive. But he has believed the girl is dead since Mrs. Steinfurth reported finding a freshly used diaper — the same size and brand as Elaina’s — along the banks of the Maumee River on June 6.
“She’s guilty of not taking care of that baby like she should have,” Mr. Schiewe said. “She should have taken that baby to the hospital ... ”
Mr. Schiewe said Mrs. Steinfurth told him her boyfriend, Steven King II, dropped the girl. She reportedly told her stepfather she does not know where the girl is.

I wonder why Steven King II has not yet been arrested, apparently he was the one who drop Elaina's body.

I wonder if the police even believe her. Maybe that's why no arrest yet, I'm betting there will be one soon, of the boyfriend. When will these moms learn that boy friends don't love your children? I feel like there should be a campaign to inform women of this.

She needs to be tried and so should her boyfriend. I have a very hard time understanding these types of people. They truly aren't PARENTS. They don't care what these little tykes go through; do they? SAD

This is another bitch that has a special place in hell reserved for her! In all her interviews, all she could talk about was herself hardly mentioning Elaina by name. I despair for the human race when WOMEN are killing babies and getting away with it!! What have we become? MOO

Yes. I was afraid to write those thots.Julie wrote:It bothers me that besides the picture of Elaina when she was younger in the walker, she isn't smiling in any of the other pictures.
She appears so intimidated, scared, reserved in most of the pics.
My own children would be laughing and bubbling and clowning for the camera.
This little sweetie was just too tense at such a young age.
Curious to see what others will be saying in the days ahead.
I pray this little one is found and she has a chance just for a little bit of happiness in her life.

The picture is such a "me-me-me" snap as the mother tries to work up the tears, the outrage.
Book her and take away the other child. (I had read there was an older child.)

I hope she's found safe too, but at this point I don't think so. That "dropped" Elaina part bothers me. Is dropped CYA for expect to find head trauma, broken bones? How do you "drop" an 18 month old?
My kids pictures were usually all pretty happy and smiling too. At least they didn't have that vacant look.

Julie, that has me quite concerned, too; the part about the "dropping" being an alibi for what may be found when the baby is located. I really think that's a strong possibility.
A transcript posted by a regular on Peter Hyatt's blog, states that Elaina and her sister were both living with their father, and were only at their "mother's" house for a weekend visit because the father was working third shift. So, with what all we have so far learned, this is, AT BEST, at horrifically neglectful mother (not that mothers without primary custody would be neglectful - far from it; only, that it would appear that, combined with the fact that the boyfriend's mother publicly disapproved of her son dating Angela because of how Angela treated her children, and the fact that medical attn was not sought immediately for ANY injury to the child, and various and sundry other details that speak to Angela's clear negligence and possibly abuse of her kids, that there may have been a REASON this mother did not have primary custody of her daughters).
I'd like to add another point in, because it was brought up, and I have the experience to comment with particular knowledge.
Upthread a ways, "lostyou" commented about boyfriends and how they don't love the mother's children. My experience gives me two opinions on this, and while the first seems to be in disagreement with your premise, please forge ahead to my conclusion.
When I took my children and the dog and left my abusive husband, I knew I would not date a man at any point that I had not known for 5 years or more. I said, "KNOWN." And, I didn't mean, I met him once a few years ago. I mean't KNOWN. That was my rule - not that everyone must follow it to be a responsible parent, but it was my personal rule.
I was well aware that, whether or not a boyfriend would love my children or help me care for them at some time in the future, it was not his RESPONSIBILITY to do so, and I should never assume that he will automatically take on the role of protector and provider.
When I did begin dating (a man I'd known for 25 years, who I'd grown up with, "dated" in the 8th grade, was close with from age 5 until we graduated high school), I watched him carefully, no matter how long I'd known him. Some things that stood out to me were:
- (before he met my daughters) he took particular care, without my mentioning it first, to know my children's activities schedule, so that he could plan his trips into town when it wouldn't conflict.
- he took it in stride without batting an eye, when I had to cancel plans because of anything involving my family, and instead, helped take care of my dog or suggested that he run errands, pick up groceries, do laundry, etc, so I wouldn't have those things to hassle with when we came home.
- he asked about my girls all the time and was interested in their activities and hearing about things we did, enduring the endless stories I had, as mothers have about their darlings. He even purposely became familiar with some of the things (Disney characters, games, activities, and such) that the girls liked, so that if our relationship progressed to him meeting the kids, he'd have things to talk to them about and connect with them over.
- (after meeting them, several months into our dating relationship)...from the day he met my children, every single outing, except for on a handful of "occasions" (as in, I can count them on two hands) included the girls...going to the parks, riding bikes, bowling, the zoo, botanical gardens, Disney movies...etc.
- he coached my youngest's basketball team and baseball team for 4 years, and never missed a single one of my oldest's soccer or basketball games.
- helped care for and provide for my daughters for 5 years, until we married this year in January.
- (this was a biggie for me) studies the Bible and prays daily with my daughters, and has done so for our whole relationship.
This man loves my children. He considers them to be his children. My youngest daughter has had him in her life since she was 4 (she is now almost 10), and she considers him her father, and has for a few years now. He will be the one to fill all the traditional "father" roles for the rest of her life, and, I know many women who have very similar experiences with their second husbands, as I know most of you know women like that also, or may be in just such a situation, yourselves. He has regarded himself as one of their parents for the entire time that he's helped care for and raise them, and I have no doubt in my mind that he has loved them and had their best interests at heart from the day he met them.
HERE'S WHY I GAVE THE LENGTHY BACKSTORY:
EVEN WITH my experience, knowing that my boyfriend (now husband) loves my daughters as his own, I still agree with what "lostyou" said.
If women with boyfriends think theirs is the "exception" to the rule...well, I am married to the exception, and while there ARE other men that are of his caliber, there is no excuse for just assuming that some man who had no hand in creating your babies is going to love and protect them like a father should. Some men WILL, but you cannot know that immediately, and if you think you can, you are wrong.
I agree with "lostyou" further, that there should be a campaign to inform the growing number of single mothers of this. We've seen too many mothers recently who have protected their boyfriends when their children are injured or missing, or even dead. I read here daily, and only comment once in a while. But I read of these poor children whose mothers want a relationship more than they want to protect their kids. It's despicable. Such women have no business having children to begin with, and sadder still, is that in so many cases (this one included), there is a loving father left to mourn the loss of his precious child all because some court thought it would be detrimental to cut the mother out of the child's life. I know the reverse is all too true, also, as in the heartbreaking case of the Powell boys.
But, mothers, I cannot stress this enough: your boyfriend is NOT your child's protector; YOU ARE. Your boyfriend is NOT your primary concern; YOUR KIDS ARE. Your boyfriend may be amazing, but your kids MUST be the most important thing TO YOU. He doesn't HAVE to love them; they're not HIS. You OUGHT to love them, because you chose to bring them into the world. If you love your boyfriend more, then please let Dad or grandparents or your siblings, or SOMEONE ELSE raise your children, because you are not fit to do so. If, at any time, my then-boyfriend had given any indication whatsoever that the physical, emotional, and spiritual welfare of my daughters was not paramount to him, our relationship would have come to a screeching halt. I watched for it. I didn't expect it, because of my extensive knowledge of who I knew him to be, but I watched closely, nonetheless. My kids are worth my being skeptical and scrutinizing about who is around them...even if some think it's over-the-top. My children have never been hurt at the hands of the man I chose to date, so my "over-protection" served its purpose. I only wish more mothers believed what "lostyou" has to say. It would have saved so many children.
