Elaina Steinfurth, 18 Month Old, Missing Since June, 2, 2013-- East Toledo, OH

I realize my "dissertation" didn't have much to do with articles or facts, aside from the bit about Peter's blog.  Those things were just on my heart, and it all came tumbling out.

My husband "follows" these cases, too (I put that in quotes because his following really only involves him absorbing what I tell him when I'm reading about them).  He wants me to post, though, what he just had to say about this particular case:

Soprano's husband says:
"Equally as important to the welfare of children in dating relationships, is that the boyfriend (or whomever isn't the parent of the kids at hand) be aware of the place he ought to take when he invades a family unit, even with the best intentions.  I knew your kids would be your first priority, and if I wasn't willing to accept that, and make them my first concern, as well, I had no business being in that relationship.  Any man who isn't willing to join the mother in putting the kids first, has no right to involve himself with a mother.  The kids come first, and their protection and well-being are central, because they are the primary interest of YOUR new-found interest. If you want her, you'd better be man enough to love those who come with her."

As all here do, we hope and pray Elaina is found safely, and we pray for her sister and father and maternal & paternal grandparents to press on for the sister's sake and for what we hope is Elaina's safe return to her daddy.

Soprano, I applaud your husband for realizing and accepting his role in your children's lives. And you, for setting the bar high in the first place for any man that would be in your children's lives.

I do think the "dropped" Elaina is an alibi for any trauma on her body when she is found. (Reminds me of the Baby Katherine Phillips case here at RC. Sean Phillips-I yanked and ripped the car seat out of the car, didn't notice unsecured Kate until she went bouncing across the Wendy's parking lot, head first, oops.)

If there is such a thing as good news in the case of a missing child, here it is: the disappearance of Elaina Steinfurth is still officially a missing persons case. Police in Toledo, Ohio say they haven't reclassified it as a homicide investigation. Now for the bad news: the missing toddler's own grandfather has said publicly that he thinks his granddaughter is dead.

Little Elaina Steinfurth will be missing two weeks as of Sunday.

Her mother is in custody for child endangerment, but still no word on the one-year-old's whereabouts.

Saturday, hundreds searched streets and riverbanks and even garbage cans looking for any sign of the little girl.

One of searchers was Risa Smith, the organizer of 'Justice For Nevaeh.' Four years ago, Naveah Buchanan disappeared from her Monroe home, only to be found buried near the River Raisin two weeks later. Autopsy reports showed the child may have been buried alive. No one has been prosecuted for her death.

About 100  people fanned out across the area today from Perrysubrg to the Maumee Bay State Park looking for missing 18-month old Elaina Steinfurth. Search efforts were organized by the group ‘Justice for Nevaeh.'

Divers with FBI comb Maumee River for missing toddler

Divers with the FBI today are searching the Maumee River for 18-month-old Elaina Steinfurth, who has been missing for more than two weeks.

Shortly before noon, FBI divers arrived at the river near the Anthony Wayne Bridge in East Toledo, a place where divers have searched before.

In addition to the FBI, a U.S. Coast Guard boat was on scene, along with some Toledo police and Toledo fire personnel.

As dive teams searched the Maumee River for any sign of Elaina Steinfurth Monday, the missing 18-month-old’s father revealed new details about the day of her disappearance.

In an exclusive interview with HLN’s Nancy Grace, Terry Steinfurth Jr. described what happened when he went to pick his two daughters up from his estranged wife on June 2 and he discovered that Elaina was missing.

Angela Steinfurth, Elaina’s mother, had stayed at her ex-boyfriend Steven King’s house the previous night. When Terry went to the Federal Street home of King’s family to get the girls, he says he found Angela sitting on the porch smoking a cigarette.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions in the case. Elaina's mother remains behind bars and is still being questioned.

After unsuccessful searches in the Maumee River, police say they are now focusing on other efforts to uncover information on Elaina's whereabouts, including applying pressure to people they feel may have insight. They say this investigation is far from over.

Shouting match follows court appearance by missing toddler's mother

A shouting match nearly escalated into a physical fight between the estranged husband and stepfather of Angela Steinfurth today outside Toledo Municipal Court.

The parties were in court today as Mrs. Steinfurth, 25, appeared for a preliminary hearing before Judge Amy Berling.

The case was continued to Monday, as requested by the Toledo Police Department through the prosecutor.

Both the mother and her boyfriend know exactly what hell was visited upon that little one. Both of them! A mother does not wake up to discover her child with a bump on the head, a black eye, and blood in a nostril without demanding an answer... unless she already knows the answer!

The mother sits outside and refuses to give the baby to her father.
Refuses and refuses while boyfriend goes inside.
Then, mother goes into the house and "discovers" the baby, 18 months old, is gone. AS IS THE BOYFRIEND.

Boy friend DOES return later to the house but, of course, the baby is GONE. 

Yep. They BOTH know where the little girl is.
A little girl who did not smile for pictures because there was nothing in her life to smile for.

Sweet, sweet child. May you be safely in trusting arms and with no more pain.

There are new details in the search for the missing East Toledo toddler.

Some volunteers put their own boat in the Maumee River Friday night to look for 18-month-old Elaina Steinfurth who was last seen on June 2nd.

These people care so much that many are not resting. They feel the need to keep moving and trying as the search nears the end of its third week.

She's charged with child endangerment. Police say she admitted to knowing that 18-month-old Elaina had serious injuries, but didn't seem medical help.

Day 22: Dozens gather at weekend's second vigil

There was another prayer vigil Sunday afternoon for missing 1-year-old Elaina Steinfurth.

On Saturday night, dozens of people gathered and lit candles at another vigil.

There was also another citizen search earlier in the day Saturday, but it turned up no new leads.

Family members are trying to remain optimistic as the days drag on.

"I'm still hoping for a happy ending but they say your odds are against you at this time. I don't want to loose hope. It's been a long three weeks," said Elaina's grandfather Terry Steinfurth.

Shouts of “Bring Elaina home!” echoed down Federal Street in East Toledo on Saturday evening as about 100 people took part in a vigil and walked a loop around the neighborhood where 18-month-old Elaina Steinfurth last was seen.

The weather did not dim the group’s enthusiasm, though the strong winds and light rain prevented lighting the many candles that were planned for the vigil.

The crowd, led by Elaina’s paternal grandfather, Terry Steinfurth, Sr., began the vigil with a prayer before marching through the neighborhood and closed with a prayer for her safe return.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -  Angela Steinfurth, the mother of an 18-month-old east Toledo girl missing since June 2, was indicted on one count of obstructing justice Monday by a Lucas County Grand Jury.

Police got involved in the young girl's disappearance on the afternoon of June 2, when Elaina's father, Terry Steinfurth, showed up at a home in east Toledo to pick up the girl and her older sister. Elania's grandfather says Angela allowed their oldest to go with him, but refused to let him see Elaina. He says he persisted, and she refused.

That's when he says the children's grandfather, Terry Steinfurth Sr., arrived on scene. He says he wanted to help Terry Jr. get Elaina when Angela wouldn't give her up. Steinfurth Sr. says when he showed up, Angela told him the baby [Elaina] was napping, and she didn't want to wake her.

TOLEDO, Ohio - Baby Elaina's father, T. J. Steinfurth, doesn't want his daughter forgotten.

It's been nearly a month since the toddler was reported missing. Today members of Elaina's family were at the High Level Bridge where volunteers have conducted numerous searches in recent weeks.

Elaina's dad says more needs to be done to bring his daughter home.

"To me it feels like it's just getting pushed onto the back burner. So, hopefully maybe now someone will see this and they will step up their game and actually get down here and help, because that's what we need."

The family is concerned because they think police may have found some new evidence Saturday. But T. J. Steinfurth says authorities tell him they won't put divers in the water until Monday.

A lock of hair pulled from the Maumee River could provide a new lead in the search for missing toddler Elaina Steinfurth.

A fisherman found the strands of brownish-blond hair on Saturday, according to the Toledo Blade.

He turned the evidence over to police, who have sent it away for testing to determine whether it is human hair, Toledo Police Department Sergeant Joe Heffernan told HLN. He said investigators hope to get those results in the next few days. If it is human, they will see if DNA can be recovered from it to examine for a possible match to Elaina’s DNA.

Toledo Police Sgt. Joe Heffernan says initial tests show hair found in the Maumee River by a fisherman over the weekend is human hair.

It is not yet known if the hair belongs to missing 1-year-old Elaina Steinfurth. Police say DNA tests to determine that could take weeks.

Toledo Fire and Rescue dive team crews went back in the river near the base of the Anthony Wayne Bridge for the first time in days. Crews had searched the area extensively in the weeks after the little girl disappeared, but called off searches in recent days.

Little Elaina Steinfurth's family did what they've been doing for weeks on Saturday. They searched and they held a vigil for the missing toddler.

The 18-month-old disappeared on June 2 and her family is still searching for answers as to what happened. Her mother Angela Steinfurth remains in jail, charged with lying to the police about their investigation into the child's disappearance.

Elaina's grandfather Terry Steinfurth said. "I wish we could bring it to an end. I really do. We all need closure and somebody's got to know. We just need to find a way to make them talk."

He says police haven't told the family anything new. Right now they're waiting to find out if human hair found by a fisherman in the Maumee belongs to Elaina. The DNA results could take weeks.

Day 45: Baby Elaina's family still hopeful but scaling back search for missing girl

TOLEDO -- 45 days after authorities, family and volunteers started searching for 18-month-old Elaina Steinfurth, her father has announced his family will scale back their civilian efforts to find her.

"Obviously I still have high hopes she is going to come home safe... Right now, I just got to take a step back and make sure my other daughter is getting the help she needs and getting through everything...I'm just trying to have somewhat of a normal life" Elaina's father T.J. Steinfurth said at a candlelight vigil on Wednesday night.

Elaina's adult cousin, Ginger Smith, added that Elaina's family has now moved into what they are calling the "recovery stage" of their efforts to find baby Elaina.

"We have searched every possibility...but if we get a tip we wont stop...We're just searching the same places over and over," Smith said.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Another vigil was held Wednesday for missing one-year-old Elaina Steinfurth.

Elaina went missing at the beginning of June, and although family members say they are not giving up hope, they need to be realistic about the situation. They say they are now slowing down their search efforts and focusing on recovery.

"I gotta kind of take a step back and make sure my other daughter is getting the help she needs, and is getting through everything the way she needs to, and just trying to have somewhat of a normal life," said TJ Steinfurth, Elaina's father.

After 45 days of searching and waiting and praying, the family announced their decision to focus on their own recovery.

"Most times in situations like this, a child would surface within 72 hours, and it's day 45," TJ said.

Steven King has just been arrested in connection to the case of missing toddler, Elaina Steinfurth.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Steven King has been arrested in connection to the case of missing baby Elaina.

He is charged with felony obstruction of justice.

As reporters fired questions at King regarding baby Elaina's whereabouts, King replied we would all know the answers when he is found innocent.

Police say King has been impeding on their investigation and knew something about what happened to Elaina.

"Every day since this happened we've been out, interviewing, searching, trying to find out what we can verify as truth, and untruth. So I think this arrest helps move this case forward, in that respect. And like I said, expect more to come on this case," said Sgt. Joe Heffernan with the Toledo Police Department.

It's been 51 days since anyone saw Elaina Steinfurth, 1.  But family and neighbors have not given up searching for the little girl.

Her grandfather, Terry Steinfurth says, "its the unknown, I still want to believe she's out there and we're going to bring her home safe."

Monday, Toledo Police made another arrest in the case.  Steven King Jr, the boyfriend of Elaina's mother, was taken into custody.  He's charged with obstruction of justice.

"It was a surprised to me," Terry Steinfurth said.  "None of us were expecting it.

The arrest has sparked a new sense of hope for the toddler's family.  For them, this is one step closer to finding her.

His attorney, Pete Rost, pushed for a lower bail, saying his client continually cooperated with police. Rost says King was only arrested after finally telling the FBI Monday that he wouldn't be speaking with them anymore.

Still, his bail was set at $250,000 and is not eligible for 10 percent bond.

Meanwhile, family and friends prepare for another prayer vigil for baby Elaina at night.

Case against Angela Steinfurth will continue in August

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Angela Steinfurth, the mother of missing 1-year-old Elaina Steinfurth, was back in front of a judge Wednesday at 9:00 a.m.

The judge set her next court appearance for August 14th.

Steinfurth is charged with obstruction of justice in connection to the disappearance of her daughter.

In her last court appearance, Steinfurth's attorney asked the judge to grant her supervision instead of going back to jail. That request was denied.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - A grand jury has indicted Steven King on obstructing justice.

On July 22, King was arrested in connection to the case of missing 1-year-old Elaina Steinfurth. He was charged with felony obstruction of justice. He appeared in court the next day, where the judge set his bond at $250,000.

King has been on the radar since the investigation into Elaina's disappearance began June 2. After several weeks, the prosecutor's office was finally able to secure charges. Police say King has been impeding on their investigation and knew something about what happened to Elaina.

Elaina's mother, Angela, has also been charged with obstruction of justice in the case. She has made multiple courtroom appearances, and is scheduled to appear again mid-August.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Day 68 - Aug. 8, 2013:

While Steven King was arraigned in Lucas County Common Pleas court on felony obstruction of justice charges, the case of missing Elaina Steinfurth took a new turn.

An assistant Lucas County prosecutor says the case is now being investigated as a homicide.

Judge Ruth Ann Franks ordered King to remain in jail on $250,000 bond. His arraignment was continued until Aug. 15.

In asking that an East Toledo man accused of lying to police over the disappearance of a missing toddler remain in jail, an assistant Lucas County prosecutor said today that the case is now being investigated as a homicide.

“The allegations are the defendant lied to police in the course of what is regarded now as a homicide investigation,” Brad Smith told the court.

Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Ruth Ann Franks then ordered that Steven King II, 23, of 704 Federal St., remain in the Lucas County jail on $250,000 bond.

TOLEDO -- Steven King appeared in court Thursday morning in connection to the case of missing baby Elaina Steinfurth, a case prosecutors now call a homicide.

King, the ex-boyfriend of Elaina's mother Angela Steinfurth, was arraigned on a charge of obstruction of justice. He was indicted by a Lucas County Grand Jury last week.

WNWO spoke to Steven King's attorney, Peter Rost, who claims this charge is being used as a tactic for King to confess.

"There are no homicide charges pending against anyone at this point," Rost said.

Baby Elaina's family addresses court postponements and homicide label

TOLEDO -- Nearly 2 and a half months since 1-year-old Elaina Steinfurth was last seen, in an East Toledo neighborhood, her family is still holding out hope that she is alive.

On Wednesday night, Baby Elaina's family and their supporters gathered at the corner of Federal and Leonard for another bi-weekly prayer vigil.

Since June 2nd, the day Elaina was reported missing, her family has been on an emotional roller coaster as they attend every court hearing for the two people charged in the toddler's disappearance.

One of those people is Elaina's mother, Angela Steinfurth, who appeared in court on Wednesday on a charge of obstructing justice.

Again, the hearing was postponed but this time at the request of Steinfurth's attorney who asked for more time to review nearly 30 hours of video interviews taken with Steinfurth and Toledo Police.

Elaina was reported missing by her father June 2. Police arrested Elaina's mother, Angela Steinfurth, ten days later for obstruction of justice.  Fifty-one days after her disappearance police made a second arrest. Angela's ex-boyfriend, Steven King, was charged with obstruction of justice.

In a court proceeding in early August, prosecutors said the case is now being considered a homicide.

The group "Team Elaina" is preparing for a march. On Sunday, they will march around the Lucas County jail with their battle cry to bring Elaina home.

The family says it will be a peaceful march. Team Elaina will meet Sunday in front of the Lucas County Common Pleas courthouse for a short vigil. Then they plant to march from the courthouse to the jail where Elaina's mother and her ex-boyfriend are locked up.

If this is now considered a homicide I wonder what evidence the police have been able to discover. IMO both the Mother and boyfriend are guilty. I think they believe " no body no case". Hopefully they can get justice for this little girl.

Suspected human remains were found Thursday in a computer box, stored in a detached garage on the property where missing toddler Elaina Steinfurth was last seen about three months ago.

“We have received a box that appears to contain human remains,” said Dr. James Patrick, Lucas County Coroner.

Dr. Diane Scala-Barnett, a deputy coroner, went to 704 Federal St. in East Toledo after police notified the coroner’s office about a discovery in the garage.

“She felt that initially that’s what it appears to be,” Mr. Patrick said of Dr.. Barnett’s findings.

An autopsy is scheduled for today. Toledo police also have scheduled a news conference at 10:30 a.m.

Package with human remains removed from garage near King home (Video)

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - On Thursday Toledo Police removed a box containing human remains from a garage near the home of Steven King, which is located at 704 Federal Street in east Toledo.

An exclusive Toledo News Now source with knowledge of the investigation said investigators removed a package from a garage in an alley off Prentice Street in east Toledo. The person could not say what was in the package, but said it was turned over to the Lucas County Coroner's Office.

Lucas County Coroner James Patrick confirmed just before 6:30 p.m. Thursday that the box did contain human remains. He says Dr. Diane Barnett, Deputy Lucas County Coroner was with Police when the remains were found. Dr. Patrick says those remains will be autopsied Friday morning.

The Toledo News Now source said Steven King was removed from the Lucas County Jail Thursday afternoon and was at the Safety Building talking with police.

Toledo police say they executed a search warrant at the King residence based on new information received Thursday. They will hold a press conference Friday based on the results of this search.

Facebook posts say Elaina's body found

An unconfirmed post on Facebook has stated the body of missing 1-year-old Elaina Steinfurth was found on Thursday.



A Facebook user posted to the page of Elaina's father TJ Steinfurth, saying her heart was breaking for her cousin TJ, and "RIP Baby girl! You will always be in our hearts!"

Another Facebook user asked if Elaina was found, and the cousin replied, "Yes, they found her buried in a box."

This has not been confirmed by officials or the Steinfurth family at this time, but the Lucas County Coroner has confirmed that a box with human remains was removed from a garage near King's home by police.

I had hopes...

In order for the LE to go back to the garage, someone had to tell them.
LE made a bee line just to the garage.
LE told media they had been given info.
Then, LE recover the box and pull the bf, S King, in for more questioning.
This tells me the person who gave the info fingered S King.
My guess is the mother wants to get out so she is going to blame the bf whether it is true or not...
Mother was in the know and withheld info.

I am curious as to when the box with baby Elaina's little body was put into the garage? Hope that box is fingerprinted... Many boxes also have time/ID stamps from the manufacturer's. Hope this one does.
