Another Alleged Confession Made in Holloway Case
http://www.aol.com

(Feb. 23) -- Joran Van der Sloot, a longtime suspect in the disappearance of U.S. student Natalee Holloway, has allegedly made a second confession about disposing of her body. The confession reportedly came during an interview Van der Sloot gave to the German news agency RTL.

According to the news agency, Van der Sloot said that Holloway's body is hidden in a swamp in the Caribbean island of Aruba. He also allegedly told the agency he is afraid of being prosecuted for the crime.

These most recent revelations come nearly three years after Van der Sloot made a similar confession during an undercover operation by reporter Peter R. de Vries. In that confession, Van der Sloot was caught on camera saying that Holloway had died accidentally and that he had dumped her body at sea. Prosecutors later decided that confession did not constitute legal evidence because the statements were a mixture of "lies and fantasy."

Natalee Holloway was 18 when she disappeared on May 30, 2005, while vacationing in Aruba. Her fate has been a mystery ever since. Authorities believe she is dead, but her body has not been found.

Holloway was last seen leaving a nightclub in Aruba with Joran Van der Sloot, center, and brothers Satish Kalpoe, left, and Deepak Kalpoe, right. All three were arrested but never charged in her disappearance. RTL, a German news agency, recently reported that Van der Sloot said in an interview that he disposed of Holloway's body in a swamp in Aruba.

In January 2008, Dutch TV aired footage from a hidden camera that showed Van der Sloot saying that he was with Holloway when she apparently died and that a friend with a boat took her body out to sea. Van der sloot, here with his father, Paulus, in December 2007, later admitted making the comment but said he was lying. Police have long suspected that Paulus Van der Sloot knew something about the case, but he died earlier this month.

Natalee Holloway confession branded ‘fantasy’
Suspect claims he dumped missing Ala. teen’s body in swamp on Aruba

updated 8:44 a.m. ET, Tues., Feb. 23, 2010

Natalee Holloway -- Missing 5/30/05 G-cvr-100222-vandersloot-10p.h2
Joran van der Sloot's claim that he disposed of Natalee Holloway's body in a marsh was dismissed as "very unbelievable" by Aruba's chief prosecutor.

LONDON - The suspect in the disappearance of American student Natalee Holloway has confessed to disposing of her body in a swamp on the Caribbean island of Aruba, according to a Dutch tabloid newspaper and Aruba's chief prosecutor.

Joran van der Sloot made the statement in a sit-down interview with a television journalist, De Telegraaf reported Tuesday.

However, Aruba's chief prosecutor Peter Blanken told NBC News that the suspect's story was "very unbelievable."

Holloway, from Mountain Brook, Ala., was 18 when she was last seen leaving a bar in the Aruban capital on the final night of a high school graduation trip in May 2005. Her body has never been recovered.

Authorities in Aruba reopened the investigation after they found out about the alleged confession, which is believed to have been recorded in August.

"The locations, names and times he gave just did not make sense," Blanken told NBC News.

'Lies'

De Telegraaf quoted Blanken as saying that van der Sloot's statement was "held together by lies and fantasy."

The interview was not aired by German broadcaster RTL because of doubts about whether van der Sloot was telling the truth, Blanken added.

Van der Sloot claimed that Holloway had died accidentally and insisted that he did not kill her, Blanken said.

In 2008, the suspect was secretly taped saying that Holloway had died after suffering a seizure on a beach and that he had dumped her body in the sea.

Van der Sloot later said he had been lying in a bid to impress the man he was talking to.

He also told a U.S. journalist that he sold Holloway to a man on a boat for $10,000. However, he subsequently insisted he had also made up that story.

Holloway disappeared on May 30, 2005. She was last seen getting into a car with van der Sloot and two of his friends.

The three men have been questioned repeatedly by police but have never been formally charged.

I bet the criminals in the U.S. wish that prosecutors didn't believe them when they confessed. He keeps changing his story, but he most likely did have something to do with Natalie's disappearance and/or death.

How long can he keep dreaming up these scenarios without having to answer to somebody?
He's an arrogant pathalogical liar, there are probably bits of truth in each one. I think the word "boat" is key. And I believe his father more than likely helped him, in one sense or another.

J4A, I agree with you about the criminals in our country. And I also agree that he most likely was involved.... no, better than that... I'll say I believe he killed her.

Piper, it does seem really unbelievable that he can walk around with that smirk on his face, saying whatever he wants... and seemingly gets away with it. I, too, believe his father helped him.... dispose of Natalee's body.

I remember watching this case, day after day, week after week, month after month. I thought for sure that she would be found. Nothing, nothing was found. It's so sad for her parents, family & friends, not to mention the rest of us.

I believe his father had LOTS to do with "nothing" ever being found. I would bet my last dollar that there were clues found, just never reported upon. I can't imagine as island as small as that one, could conceal a missing young woman without the help of their "so called" LE. With "daddy" being a lawyer & Judge, I feel things were hidden, destroyed, etc.

Sad things is, though I was/am hopeful that now that "daddy" is gone, maybe, just maybe, someone or something will be found out about this poor young woman.

Another Alleged Confession Made in Holloway Case

Chief prosecutor Peter Blanken told the Dutch newspaper Telegraaf that Van der Sloot might be giving false versions of the story in an attempt to hide the truth. Blanken did admit, however, that if Holloway was dumped in a swamp, "chances of finding her are extremely small."

Holloway went missing on May 30, 2005, during a graduation trip to Aruba. Van der Sloot was one of the last people to see her alive, and her body has never been found. The case received international media attention and sparked a made-for-TV movie by the Lifetime TV network.

Van der Sloot's father, attorney Paulus van der Sloot, unexpectedly died earlier this month while playing tennis. Police have long suspected that he may have had information about the case, but whatever knowledge he might have possessed went with him to the grave.

Van der Sloot is expected to give a second interview to RTL later this week.

New Holloway Details Emerge in Alleged Confession

(Feb. 26) -- New details have emerged in the alleged second confession of Joran Van der Sloot, a longtime suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway.

As reported earlier his week, Van der Sloot allegedly made the second confession during an interview last August with the German news agency RTL. The alleged confession details the death of Holloway, an American teen who disappeared on a trip to Aruba five years ago. RTL said it didn't air the interview because it doubted its veracity.

Now, the Dutch newspaper Telegraaf reports that it has viewed a recording of the alleged confession.

According to the tabloid, Van der Sloot names an accomplice and says the pair took Holloway to a friend's house, where they drank and used drugs. Holloway then purportedly climbed up onto the rim of a balcony and began dancing.

"They both had just taken some coke." Van der sloot allegedly says. "I think she was pretty drunk, so she was just kind of dancing a striptease."

Van der Sloot says he walked over to Holloway and grabbed her by the hips, Telegraaf reports, at which point she "fell" from the balcony.

"We looked down and saw her lying there. Yes, there was blood. I think she fell on the ground with her head first." Van der Sloot is quoted as saying. "Her chin was to one side and I turned it the other way. There was blood on the ground too. There was no life."

Van der Sloot says he hid Holloway's body in a swamp because he was afraid of being prosecuted for the crime, the Telegraaf reports.

According to ABC News, the justice department in Aruba has also dismissed details of this most recent alleged confession, stating they are "entirely unbelievable."

Despite the Aruba government's take on the alleged confession, Holloway's father, Dave Holloway, told CNN Headline's Nancy Grace that he is willing to search the swamp.

"I would probably be willing to get a search team together and go search all of it," Holloway told Grace during a Tuesday phone interview.

Holloway went missing on May 30, 2005, during a high school graduation trip to Aruba. Van der Sloot was one of the last people to see her alive, and her body has never been found. The case received international media attention and sparked a made-for-TV movie by the Lifetime TV network.

Van der Sloot's father, attorney Paulus van der Sloot, died unexpectedly earlier this month while playing tennis. Police suspected he may have had information about the case that he took with him to the grave.

The full Van der Sloot interview is expected to air on RTL this Sunday.

Why Does Suspect Keep Talking in Holloway Case?

(March 3) -- Investigators aren't paying much attention to a newly released confession by Joran van der Sloot, a longtime suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. But what would motivate him to talk to the media -- and to feed the press such contradictory accounts?

"Joran is a spoiled, arrogant, cocky fellow who is confident the law will never touch him because it hasn't," criminal profiler Pat Brown told AOL News. "He likes the power he has to enthrall people with his tale and manipulate them into believing what he says is true, especially because it isn't the truth."

Holloway, 18, from Mountain Brook, Ala., disappeared May 30, 2005, while on a trip to Aruba to celebrate her high school graduation. Her body has never been found. The case received international media attention and inspired a made-for-TV movie aired by Lifetime in 2009.

Holloway's classmates said they last saw her leaving Carlos 'n Charlie's nightclub with van der Sloot, then a 17-year-old Dutch honors student living in Aruba, and his two friends, Surinamese brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe. All three young men would be arrested in the case but all three were released without charge.

From the onset of the case, van der Sloot's stories have varied significantly.

During a June 9, 2005, interview with police in Aruba, van der Sloot said Holloway left the nightclub with him and the Kalpoes. He said they went for a car ride but then dropped the tourist off at her hotel, a Holiday Inn. He said he last saw her stumbling toward the lobby.

Roughly five days later, van der Sloot gave another statement to police. In this one, he said he and Holloway had gone to a beach not far from the Holiday Inn, where they made out. He said Holloway insisted on being left on the beach when he decided to catch a ride home with Deepak Kalpoe.

He said he had lied in his previous statement because Deepak Kalpoe had told him it would "be better if we would say that the three of us dropped off the girl at the Holiday Inn hotel." He said he decided to tell the truth after speaking with his father, prominent lawyer Paulus van der Sloot.

Despite her family's efforts to keep the investigation going, the case eventually went cold. Then, in February 2006, a Dutch television station aired a hidden-camera confession that van der Sloot had made to Aruban businessman Patrick van der Eem. In it, van der Sloot claimed Holloway had died of a drug overdose on the beach, and that he and a friend had dumped her body at sea.

"He went out to sea and then he threw her out, like an old rag," van der Sloot said.

Following the broadcast of that confession, van der Sloot called the Dutch television program "Pauw & Witteman." He acknowledged making the comments, but said they were lies.

"That is what he wanted to hear, so I told him what he wanted to hear," van der Sloot said in reference to van der Eem.

Prosecutors later decided that the confession did not constitute legal evidence because the statements were a mixture of "lies and fantasy."

Van der Eem was reportedly paid about $35,000 by the program that broadcast the alleged confession.

Two years later, van der Sloot and reporter Zvezdana Vukojevic published a book, "The Case of Natalee Holloway." In it, van der Sloot gives his perspective on Holloway's disappearance and apologizes for his initial untruths, but maintains his innocence.

What, if anything, van der Sloot made from sales of the book remains unclear.

In November 2008, van der Sloot gave an hourlong interview to Fox News host Greta Van Susteren, during which he allegedly told her he had sold Holloway for $10,000 to a man he met in a casino. After the interview, van der Sloot called Fox and said he had been lying.

When Van Susteren discussed the interview during a Nov. 25, 2008, episode of "On the Record," she played a recorded conversation between van der Sloot and his father regarding allegations that the younger man was involved in human trafficking.

During the program, van der Sloot's attorney, Joe Tacopina, questioned Van Susteren about paying the young man for the recording, which he had made with his father. Van Susteren said she did not "buy" the recording, but acknowledged that Fox did "license" it.

"That's what the media does. You license photos, you license recordings, you license tape," she said.

Van Susteren did not comment on how much van der Sloot had been paid for licensing the tape, but some sources claim it was upward of $10,000.

Yet another statement van der Sloot made to the media was made public last week. This one was filmed in August 2009, but German news agency RTL said it had not aired the interview because it doubted its veracity. Nevertheless, the Dutch newspaper Telegraaf said it had viewed a recording of the interview.

According to the paper, van der Sloot named an accomplice and said the pair had taken Holloway to a friend's house, where they drank and used drugs. Holloway then allegedly climbed onto the rim of a balcony and began dancing.

"They both had just taken some coke," van der Sloot said, according to the Dutch newspaper. "I think she was pretty drunk, so she was just kind of dancing a striptease."

Van der Sloot said he walked over to Holloway and grabbed her by the hips, Telegraaf reported, at which point she "fell" from the balcony and was killed. He said he hid Holloway's body in a swamp because he was afraid of being prosecuted, the report said.

According to ABC News, the justice department in Aruba dismissed the most recent details, calling them "entirely unbelievable."

Several sources have told Alabama's NBC13 that van der Sloot was paid for the RTL interview. NBC13's Linda White confirmed this to AOL News, but said that her sources "did not know how much" he was paid.

Jasper Teijsse, a senior corporate adviser for RTL, told AOL News his news agency did not make any payments to van der Sloot. However, he did say that money was exchanged between RTL and the producer.

"RTL paid a production fee to the producer of a number of interviews, including a lie-detector test with van der Sloot," Teijsse said.

The question has since been directed to the producer, Jaap Amesz, but he has yet to respond.

It's difficult to trace whether van der Sloot is making much of a profit on these interviews. But Brown, founder of the Pat Brown Criminal Profiling Agency, said that the young Dutch man may be a "psychopathic personality" who is looking for attention. She has two possible explanations for why his stories are so changeable.

"One is that it isn't the truth, so there is not one exact replay of what happened for him to relive. Instead, he has to make up a new video of the event each time," she said.

"Secondly, he is the director of this 'film,' and he wants his audience to be engaged, and so he cuts what he realizes is not working or loses the interest of the person or he just suddenly gets a 'good idea' that he thinks will make a better story," Brown said.

"Psychopaths often do not think out the consequences of their actions or understand how others view their actions; he does what amuses him and makes him feel good."

Unless Holloway's body is found, it is highly unlikely anyone will ever be charged in her disappearance. And her family will never know exactly what happened.

"Because there was no body, no physical evidence, [Aruban authorities] do not feel they can win with just a half-baked story," Brown said.

Couple finds 'skeleton' in Aruba picture

Mar 18, 2010 00:06 EST

Natalee Holloway -- Missing 5/30/05 Cecpic10

Patti Muldowney was busy snapping pictures of colorful fish during her snorkeling dive off the coast of Aruba last fall. She didn't notice what else was on the sea floor.

"We only discovered it after we got the film developed," the 62-year-old Rapho Township woman said.

Flipping through the prints in December, the Muldowneys realized Patti had photographed more than just underwater scenery.

One picture appears to show a human skeleton.

"You can see a fish. You can see some rocks. And then you can see this body lying on its back, facing up," said her husband, John Muldowney.

They showed friends. They showed the local police.

All agreed: It looks like human bones.

"I showed my doctor," John Muldowney said. "He said it looks like it's weighted down with some rocks."

Skeleton. Aruba. Could it be? The Muldowneys wonder.

•••

The Muldowneys forwarded copies of the photo — which they had enlarged — to the FBI field office in Philadelphia, but investigators won't say what, if anything, they're doing with it.

John Muldowney has a gut feeling the skeleton could be that of Natalee Holloway, the 18-year-old Alabama honors student whose mysterious disappearance in Aruba in May 2005 continues to make international headlines.

"It just seems so strange that that girl never showed up, and here we are right off the shoreline, right where she disappeared, and there's a body lying there," said John Muldowney, 78, a retired propane inspector with the state Department of Labor and Industry and owner of the Pinch Pond Family Campground.

"I hate to say I wish it was her, but it would give that family some closure."

Muldowney said he contacted this newspaper about the photo because he was getting nowhere with the FBI.

"I've called Quantico" — the agency's training academy in Virginia — "so much the receptionist said, 'We've got to stop meeting like this,' " he said.

The FBI in Philadelphia sent the picture to its senior investigators who work in the Caribbean.

"We did receive that photo, and it was sent to the lead agent down in Miami who handles that area in the Caribbean," said Special Agent Frank Burton Jr., a spokesman for the FBI's field office in Philadelphia.

It is unclear what happened to the photo after that. The FBI in Miami said it has no record of getting it, and neither does the agency's legal attaché in Barbados, which has jurisdiction over Aruba.

•••

Holloway was last seen on May 30, 2005, during her high school's graduation trip to the Dutch Caribbean island. Her classmates reported seeing her leave the Carlos 'n Charlie's in the capital city of Oranjestad.

The case remains unsolved, though a man once suspected of involvement in Holloway's disappearance has recently claimed to have disposed of her body.

Joran van der Sloot, 22, said in an interview with RTL Nieuws that Holloway accidentally fell from a balcony and he disposed of her body in a swamp. He previously told an undercover reporter that she died unexpectedly while they were kissing and he dumped her body in the ocean.

Aruban prosecutors say they lack evidence to charge Van der Sloot.

Holloway's family has offered a reward of $250,000 for help solving her disappearance. It has also offered a $1 million reward for information leading to her safe return.

Since her disappearance nearly five years ago, tourists have reported finding skeletal remains on the island. Tests have shown them be those of shipwrecked sailors, however.

•••

The Muldowneys were on a seven-day cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Adventure Of The Seas, whose first port was Oranjestad.

They and another couple from Lititz had taken a catamaran out to a snorkeling site. "It was far enough out that we couldn't see land," remembers family friend Ken Dimm.

The couples remember the site was near a shipwreck, though which one of the numerous wrecks off the western coast of Aruba is unclear. The most popular snorkeling and scuba site there is near the Antilla, a German freighter that was scuttled in World War II.

Patti Muldowney went snorkeling with the Dimms while her husband stayed above on a catamaran. She had purchased a disposable camera and was taking pictures from just under the water's surface.

"It was kind of hard, my first time taking pictures. You can see a little bit of the wreckage, so I saw it down there and snapped it," said Patti Muldowney, who works in the billing department at Luther Acres.

Only two months later, in December, did she realize there was more to that picture.

Evette Dimm noticed it first.

"She looks at the one picture, and you can see a fish in it," remembers John Muldowney. "Then she says, 'God, that looks like a skeleton or a corpse.' "

Patti Muldowney wonders whether the skeleton is that of Holloway.

"The thing is, they haven't found her yet," she said. "So, for the parents' sake, I would hope that this picture does help.

"But we have not heard anything. I hope they do look into it. It would be good if the parents have finality.

It looks like a skull to me, but most the people commenting under the article seem to think it is just rocks, and that the saltwater would have broken down the bones. I still think the FBI should check into this.

I've heard talk of it being rocks and coral. And also people have stated it's not uncommon for skeletons to be found in those waters due to shipwrecks. I wonder just how many, if any, they came across during searches for Natalee. I never heard of any being found.

It would be nice for all involved IF it were Natalee, for closure purposes but I find it highly unlikely that it's would be that intact, after five years. Then again, it sure would be sweet justice IF it were her, Daddy's gone & can't protect Juran.

Aruban authorities are dispatching a dive team to investigate a Pennsylvania couple's underwater photograph that may show skeletal remains of Natalee Holloway, an Alabama high school student who went missing on the Caribbean island five years ago.

A Pennsylvania couple on a snorkeling vacation in Aruba believes they inadvertently photographed what may be the skeletal remains of Natalee Holloway, an Alabama high school student who went missing on the Caribbean island five years ago.

Ann Angela, a spokeswoman for the public prosecutor's office in Aruba, said she was not authorized to say when or where the dive would take place, except that it will happen "in the very near future." Officials likely will have the results of the preliminary investigation by Sunday or Monday.

The underwater photograph of the sea floor depicts a rough outline that the couple believes resembles a human skeleton, according to the Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era, which first published the photo on Thursday.

It sure looks like a skull to me - and for the locals, would be a good place to dump a body most likely because they KNOW there are skeletons found there often and they are all assumed to be ship wrecked victims...
I'm just hoping for closure - I wish Joran would be held accountable for his comments - how many times does the guy have to confess??? I know his story changes every time, but I believe that every story has some truth to it - it's impossible to break it down and analyze which is truth and which is fantasy - but it's obvious that he has spent great lengths of time fantasizing about her murder. Part of me holds out hope that his involvement in the sex trade in Hong Kong might indicate that she could still be alive - but that's a long shot I know... and I wouldn't want anyone to endure being held as a sex slave for 5 yrs - Natalee would be another Jaycee Dugard if that was the case, but hopefully one day she'll be found...

It is a miscarriage of justice that Joran hasn't been charged with anything after confessing more than once. It makes me wonder if Casey Anthony would still be free if the Anthonys lived in Aruba instead of Florida. I hope Natalee is still alive. Even though it doesn't seem likely, I always try to hold out hope that the victim is still alive when a body hasn't been found.

Search for Natalee Holloway's remains called off

March 24, 2010, 9:40PM

Aruban authorities have called off plans to dive in search of the remains of Natalee Holloway, CNN reported tonight.

Adolpho Richardson, the chief investigator in the case, confirmed that information to The Birmingham News late Wednesday.

Divers went out Saturday and Sunday after a Pennsylvania couple said they believe they discovered Holloway's remains while snorkeling in Aruba. Holloway disappeared there in 2005 while on a trip with fellow graduates of Mountain Brook High School.

A spokeswoman for the Aruban prosecutor told CNN the search has reached "a dead end."

"We're assuming the photo is of coral," CNN quoted spokeswoman Ann Angela as saying.

The report could not be independently confirmed, as efforts to reach Aruban officials were unsuccessful Wednesday night.

Authorities in Aruba said Tuesday that police plan to dive again later this week in hope of finding new evidence in the case.

I'm hoping Tim Miller/EqquSearch try one more time... I know they have repeatedly combed those waters, but maybe if the ppl who took the photo could go along to help they might get somewhere...

I guess I'm not to surprised w/ the Aruban authorities at this point... they get a viable lead and give it - what a week at the most? and then give up??

Natalee Holloway's Father Thinks Aruba Photo Shows Rocks, Not Daughter's Remains; Police Seem to Agree

March 25, 2010 5:15 PM
Posted by Barry Leibowitz

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS/AP) The father of Natalee Holloway, the Alabama teen who disappeared in Aruba in 2005, says he doesn't think an underwater photograph shows his daughter's remains. Dave Holloway says he's sure the picture, taken by a Pennsylvania couple on vacation last fall, is not Natalee, but rather, a natural formation.

Holloway told CBS affiliate WHTP, "When I first looked at the picture, I too thought it was her. But the more I looked at it, I became convinced it was a rock formation."

Holloway went on to say, "I know people mean well, and I would not want to discourage anyone from forwarding evidence because I could be wrong."

Prosecutors in Aruba say police have found nothing but rocks and coral in two recent days of underwater searching based on a photo provided by John and Patti Muldowney of Manheim, Pa. CNN is reporting the latest search has been called off.
A prosecutor's spokesman says police believe the photo likely shows coral that looks like a skull and bones.
The 18-year-old Holloway, of Mountain Brook, Ala., disappeared while on a high school graduation trip to Aruba in May, 2005. She was last seen leaving a bar with Dutch national Joran Van der Sloot, then 17, who has been detained in the case several times. However, Aruban prosecutors say they lack the evidence to charge him.

Natalee Holloway: search at standstill

http://www.whptv.com/news/local/story/Natalee-Holloway-search-at-standstill/1jgUgKqCrE2_K104K23fMw.cspx

A prosecutor in Aruba says he's still looking for the tour guide who took a Lancaster County couple on a snorkeling trip.

They took pictures of what they say could be the remains of Natalee Holloway. The prosecutor tells CBS 21 news dive crews will not go back out into the water until they can find theexact location where the picture was taken.

He also says he believes that the formation is coral and not Holloway's remains.

Natalee Holloway Center to Open in D.C.: Crime Prevention, Help Families of Missing, Among the Goals

Natalee Holloway -- Missing 5/30/05 Image613

Washington DC (CBS) Five years ago, in May 2005, Alabama high school student Natalee Holloway disappeared during a senior class trip to Aruba. Next week the Natalee Holloway Resource Center (NHRC) will open in Wash., D.C., in a joint effort between Holloway's mother and the National Museum of Crime & Punishment.

PICTURES: Natalee Holloway: Paradise Lost

The center, according to The Washington Post, will be a nonprofit operation designed primarily to assist families searching for missing relatives.

The center's web site says the Holloway Center will be a crisis clearinghouse for families of missing persons in the U.S.and abroad, but also focus on education and crime prevention. The facility will offer guidelines for children and adults to travel safely, including creating a national network of college volunteers who will promote the group's safe travel program to high school and college students.

The opening on June 8 is a continuation of the relationship formed between the Museum of Crime & Punishment and the Holloway family. Last year Holloway's case was added to the museum's "Cold Cases" exhibit.

Holloway, of Mountain Brook, Ala., was 18 when she was last seen leaving a bar with Dutch national Joran Van der Sloot, then 17. He has been detained in the case several times but Aruban authorities have said they don't have enough evidence to charge him.

Holloway suspect accused of $250K extortion in Ala

By KENDAL WEAVER
The Associated Press

Natalee Holloway -- Missing 5/30/05 Ph201010

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- A Dutch man suspected in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway in Aruba was charged Thursday in Alabama with trying to extort $250,000 in return for disclosing the location of her body.

A criminal complaint by the U.S. Attorney in federal court in Birmingham also accused van der Sloot in May 2010 of promising to describe the circumstances of Holloway's death in return for the money. According to a sworn statement, van der Sloot got a partial payment of $15,000 wired to a Netherlands bank soon after.

He has long been a suspect in Aruba in the disappearance of Holloway, an 18-year-old from Mountain Brook, Ala., who was on a graduation trip to Aruba with other seniors when she turned up missing as they flew home. Her mother still lives in Alabama.

The name of the person paying the money was not given. A call to U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance was not immediately returned. She said at a news conference that her office would not be releasing any more details.

Van der Sloot was arrested Thursday in Chile as a suspect in the death of a 21-year-old Stephany Flores of Peru. Her neck was broken Sunday, five years to the day after Holloway disappeared, and her body found by a maid Tuesday in a Lima hotel room registered to van der Sloot. Police believe he met the University of Lima business student for the first time the previous night at a nearby casino.

The two-count complaint in Alabama also charged van der Sloot with wire fraud stemming from the $15,000.

A statement from Holloway's mother, Beth Twitty said that she "extends her deepest sympathy to the family of Stephany Flores Ramirez and prays for swift and sure justice." She said that she was grateful for the prayers and support she's received.

A message left for Van der Sloot's attorney, Joe Tacopina of New York City, was not immediately returned.

Aruban authorities didn't prosecute van der Sloot in Holloway's May 30, 2005, disappearance even after he was caught on video saying he had asked a friend to dump her body.

He told investigators he left her on a beach, drunk. That's the last anyone saw of her. Van der Sloot was twice arrested in her disappearance - and twice released for insufficient evidence.

It never ends with this guy. What a piece of work. At least he will start paying for his crimes. He really messed up this time seeing that he isn't in Aruba and daddy isn't around to protect him anymore. It is reprehensible that he was trying to extort money from Natalee's mother, and he probably would have given her false information if she had paid him the full amount.

Joran van der Sloot Charged with Fraud and Extortion in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM—Federal prosecutors in Birmingham have filed a criminal complaint against JORAN VAN DER SLOOT, a citizen of the Netherlands, on wire fraud and extortion charges in connection with his soliciting money in May on promises he would reveal the location of Natalee Holloway’s remains in Aruba and circumstances of her death, U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and FBI Special Agent in Charge Patrick Maley announced today.

“We are committed to protecting citizens from unscrupulous individuals who attempt to financially exploit a person’s deepest fears and greatest loss,” Vance said.

The wire fraud and extortion charges are unrelated to the ongoing murder investigation in Peru, in which van der Sloot is an alleged person of interest.

Vance said her office filed the two-count criminal complaint today in U.S. District Court in Birmingham.

The complaint charges that van der Sloot, on May 10, extorted $15,000 from an individual as partial payment toward his promise to reveal the location of Natalee Holloway’s remains for $250,000. The maximum sentence on the extortion count is 20 years in prison.

The complaint also charges van der Sloot with wire fraud for causing the $15,000 to be transferred by wire from a Birmingham bank to a bank in the Netherlands in furtherance of his scheme to defraud. The maximum sentence for the wire fraud count is 30 years.

Vance thanked Aruban authorities for the assistance they provided in this investigation.

Members of the public are reminded that the criminal complaint contains only charges. A defendant is presumed not guilty.

I must say, I actually feel sorry for his mother. I bet she had no idea that even though "accused", I would bet she believed Joran & his father. I do think his father knew & maybe even helped get rid of Natalie's body. Surely he helped in covering & keeping the heat away from his son. (IMO)

Jorans mother must feel horrible, knowing now what she does, and so alone.

I think Paulus helped Joran too. I've even thought Joran didn't know where Natalee was dumped because he was left out of the loop in case he couldn't resist bragging.

I heard on NG too that Anita had been upset over Joran's behavior for a while and she didn't have any idea where he was from day to day, that she and her other 2 sons had gone on with their lives without Joran. Don't know when this started, like if it was before or after Paulus died....they didn't say. They said she didn't know he was in Peru.

Jossie Mansur said the people in Aruba who had been on Joran's side before are now completely against him and believe he probably did kill Natalee too.

The people of Peru were waiting at the border when Joran crossed over in custody from Chili....and they were screaming at him etc...which is why they decided to put a bullet proof vest on him.

I'm loving how much Joran is not being loved these days!

I do feel sorry for Anita...a mother's love doesn't die no matter how horrible your child is. She has to be so torn though and miserable for what he's done to Stephanie Flores and facing the probable reality that he fooled her about his involvement with Natalee and was really the monster behind that one too. I wouldn't want to be in her shoes.

Aruban Authorities Speak to CBS42

Contributor: Veair Green
Reported by: Cynthia Gould
Last Update: 12:50 am

Birmingham, AL (WIAT)- Jossy Mansur, editor of Diario newspaper in Aruba, spoke with CBS 42 by phone, Sunday afternoon. He said there are two planned searches on the island. He says one will be near the bird sanctuary and the other near the dam. Mansur says the two other suspects in the Holloway case, Deepak and Satish Kalpoe, are still believed to live on the island. They have kept a very low profile. He believes they should be worried Joran may try to implicate them in the disappearance of Natalee to get a better deal in Peru.

Joran van der Sloot will spend next week at police headquarters in Peru. He faces more questioning, and officials are testing a tennis racket and bloody clothes, for d-n-a linking him to the death of a young woman.

The two were caught on tape entering his hotel room, the day she was killed. As you can imagine, this is the talk of Aruba where Natalee Holloway disappeared five years ago. Joran van der Sloot is still the prime suspect in that case.

DAVE HOLLOWAY ON HIS WAY TO ARUBA

June 8, 2010 – 6:36 am

Dave Holloway is on his way to Aruba. He will be meeting with his attorney, prosecutors and investigators. I will keep you posted..

EXCLUSIVE: VAN DER SLOOT’S HAND-DRAWN MAP OF WHERE NATALEE’S BODY IS. DOES “X” MARK THE SPOT??

June 7, 2010 – 2:36 am

I have just received a hand-drawn map that Joran Van Der Sloot drew, indicating where he now claims he disposed of Natalee Holloway’s body.

The map came from “Jaap,” a former friend of Joran Van Der Sloot. Dave Holloway put us in touch. Joran befriended Jaap after he won a reality show in the Netherlands, and a large sum of money. Just like he met Stephany Flores in the Casino in Peru. It’s Van Der Sloot’s MO to befriend people with money. Stephany had won $5,000.00.

Japp produced a documentary on Van Der Sloot, and Van Der Sloot told him yet another version of what happened to Natalee that night. He drew a map, and now I have the map. Because Jaap was in contact with Joran in the midst of the sting operation I mentioned in the last post, his communications were being monitored by the FBI. When Japp contacted me and informed me about the tapes he had, his house was raided that night, and investigators seized Japp’s computers, cell phone and the tapes he shot of Joran. I was able to get the map.

Tim Miller from Texas EquuSearch is here. I have given him the map and he is working on the search as I write this. It’s a stretch but Miller says, “We have to follow every lead, and we can’t afford not to do this.”

I saw on the news today that Aruban officials are going to research 2 areas for Natalee that they feel they didn't search well enough before.

Natalee Holloway -- Missing 5/30/05 Empty Joran Van Der Sloot: A Growing Link to Natalee Holloway?

Joran Van Der Sloot: A Growing Link to Natalee Holloway?
Dutch Playboy Caught Counting 'Extorted' Money That Financed Trip to Peru

By JOHN QUINONES and SARAH NETTER
June 9, 2010

The Dutch playboy who has reportedly confessed to last month's murder of a Peruvian woman was caught on tape counting the cash widely believed to have financed his trip to Peru , Greta Van Susteren, host of Fox News' "On the Record," told "Good Morning America" today.

Fox News' Greta van Susteren discusses the extortion case against Van der Sloot. The money was extorted from Natalee Holloway's family in what was supposed to have been an FBI-led sting, U.S. authorities have said.

Van Susteren said the FBI's failure to arrest Joran van der Sloot after $15,000 was wired from Holloway's hometown in Mountain Brook, Ala., to the Netherlands was "a blunder."

Van Susteren said he was given $10,000 in cash and was caught on camera counting and then recounting the cash. Sources have said that an additional $15,000 was wired to a Dutch bank.

Van der Sloot is being held in a Lima jail for the alleged murder of Stephany Flores Ramirez , 21. The two met while gambling and drinking at a Lima casino, officials said. Police believe she was killed May 30, the five-year anniversary of Holloway's disappearance in Aruba.

Flores' battered body was found three days later, her neck broken. Van der Sloot, who had crossed the border into Chile, was nabbed there and extradited back to Peru.

Van Susteren called the entire chain of events a "huge embarrassment" for U.S. authorities.

"I don't know why they didn't arrest him and I'm sure the FBI feels horrible about what happened," she said.

In Peru, investigators are leaning on van der Sloot to give them information about Holloway's 2005 disappearance in Aruba during a school trip. He has been arrested twice in Aruba and remains the prime suspect, but has never been charged.

Master hackers hired by Peruvian authorities to examine his laptop have reportedly found pictures and other information relating to Holloway.

Investigators in Lima are also pressuring van der Sloot to take then to the hotel where Flores was killed to retrace his steps.

Police investigators told Lima's La Republica newspaper that van der Sloot's bombshell confession came late Monday night when he tearfully admitted that he grabbed Flores by the neck when she began reading articles about him on the Internet.

"I did not want to do it. The girl intruded into my private life," he told investigators, according to La Republica. "She had no right."

"I confronted her," he continued. "She was frightened, we argued and she wanted to get away. I grabbed her by the neck and I hit her."

A must read! kh

"...............An Interpol document says that in exchange for the money, van der Sloot showed the intermediary a house where Holloway's remains were supposedly hidden, CNN reported.

But records soon showed that the house wasn't even built when she disappeared -- and van der Sloot immediately confessed that he had been lying, the news channel said

He might not be lying....maybe the house was built over her. It was said early on in the case that Joran had been seen driving in this neighborhood where houses were being built.

But I'm not buying any story Joran tells. That stuff about the new construction neighborhood was in the news just like all the other stories he 'used' to 'tell where Natalee is'. Joran seems to be playing off what has already been speculated about where Natalee is.

I don't think Joran knows where Natalee is! I think he handed this baby off with the bathwater to his daddy and daddy wasn't stupid enough to tell Joran what he did with her.

Well, Tim Miller just said tonight on NG that the house Joran was talking about was the one they suspected way back in 2005! Tim said at the time that house was only a concrete slab and a driveway. Tim said they did radar on that area and didn't find anything back in 2005. So he thinks Joran is using old stories.

Me and Tim, eh? LOL
