ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - The case against Casey Anthony heads back to court today. Today's status hearing starts at 2:00 p.m. but Anthony will not be there.

Anthony's death penalty trial is scheduled to begin in May. In court the prosecutors and her defense team will speak with Judge Belvin Perry to give a status update in the case.

Meanwhile The Orlando Sentinel reports that Anthony's lead defense attorney Jose Baez has paid a $583.00 contempt of court fine but the paper says another defense attorney, Cheney Mason, wrote a letter asking the courts to wait to cash the check. Mason still wants to argue a motion to reconsider the fine.

Last week Judge Belvin Perry found Baez in contempt for not handing over specific information about defense experts to the prosecution.

Status conference today in Casey Anthony case

A status conference in the Casey Anthony murder case is set for 2 p.m. today in front of Chief Judge Belvin Perry.

The proceeding will likely deal with logistical issues for the prosecution and defense going forward toward the scheduled May trial of Casey Anthony.

No motions are scheduled to be heard today, but that does not necessarily preclude the issue of the sanction against Anthony attorney Jose Baez from being heard during the proceeding.

Baez, the defense lawyer for murder suspect Casey Anthony, has paid a $583.73 penalty for failing to turn over witness information to state prosecutors, records show.

However, a letter written by co-counsel Cheney Mason and dated Wednesday asks Assistant State Attorney Jeff Ashton hold onto the check while Mason asks Perry to reconsider the punishment imposed against Baez.

Earlier this week, Mason filed a motion with the court seeking reversal of the penalty.

In his letter to Ashton, Mason writes, "As you recall when we talked, I think there is a good faith reason to not oppose the reconsideration, given the potential future impact of the contempt citation on Mr. Baez, his youth and relative experience in these matters."

Mason added, "I believe it would be the right thing to do, but that decision is certainly yours and, I guess, Lawson's [referring to State Attorney Lawson Lamar]."

Perry handed down the penalty last week after finding Baez in "willful" violation of his court order requiring the defense to provide specific information on the experts.

Ashton, who wanted the information to help him prepare for pre-trial questioning of witnesses, asked the court to impose sanctions after he grew frustrated with the lack of specific information turned over about the defense experts and their testimony.

Anthony, 24, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee Marie in 2008. The trial is scheduled for May. She faces the death penalty if convicted.

She is not expected to be in court today.

Jose Baez Humiliation Continues...

As if courtroom antics, unprepared questions, foolish boastings, getting caught canoodling with Casey, false promises of a live Caylee, foreclosure, unpicked up photocopies, caught lying on tape, and a parade of quitting nightmare team attorneys wasn't enough to humiliate Jose Baez, take notice of the latest news story (see link for full article)

Not a mention of "sanctions"...But...I did hear Jose ask for 30 days to complete something...Judge Perry ought to give him 30 days allright...30 days in the slammer...Lets see just how prepared JB will be when it comes jury selection time...Will he or won't he be the one to question prospective jurors...Perhaps he'll pass it to Cheney...

Whaaaa??? Has he spent all his unemployment check from the Florida taxpayers already...Next thing you know he'll be in line wanting a food stamp account...

Since the hearing today 1/24/2011 is in a different courtroom, it will not be televised per WESH TV...They will have audio later...Today is all about the 12 K the defense wants for xtra investigative hours...It should be interesting to hear what JAC and Judge Perry have to say and also Team Casey's explanations of rectification of those extra hours...I wouldn't be surprised if our favorite judge says that he will grant some but not all of it....

Jose is dancing ( figuratively ) about expert witness statements...wants to set a date of feb 21...SA Jeff Ashton objects...says it is way past the due and acceptable time...

Judge just ammended Rodriquez statements due now till Feb 21, 4PM.....This is painful for Bozo...Has more hypothetical questions...

Ooooh! We have to wait nearly two whole weeks to get a ruling from Judge Perry on the Miranda/Agents of the State deal! It must be extremely important to HHJP for him to be so very cautious with it. To me, its simple-Casey wasn't in need of the Miranda rights read to her at that time-the imaginanny was, tho! And the Anthonys were not agents for the state-they just wanted to know where their granddaughter was.

LE was called because Cindy wanted Casey arrested, then questioning a mother about a missing child should not require miranda rights to be read.........they will be asking questions if you are reporting a missing child........31 days later or not!

I knew it...I overslept...just got up...missed the first hour...

Judge Perry has reminded Jeff several times to let the attorney finish the question before he objects...Casey's team brought in the BIG GUNS today...It's a good thing these questions are being asked today cause with all these objections it surely would lengthen the trial...This lady...The one that lives on a boat...sure has her shit together...I can't even imagine Bozo asking these intelligent questions..
