State lays out plan in Shunick, Pate cases
8:39 AM, Aug 3, 2012
" Stutes also provided a list of 13 statements from people Lavergne allegedly spoke with about Shunick, including statements he supposedly made on or around June 14 to family members.
The dates of those statements clarify a few things about alleged injuries that Lavergne sought treatment for. It was previously reported that he sought treatment at Ochsner Medical Center in Jefferson Parish on May 19 for stab wounds he claimed occurred when an unknown man attacked him at a New Orleans gas station when he asked for directions.
A deputy with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, on the evening of May 19, interviewed Lavergne about the alleged attack, noting that he was stabbed in the chest, back, neck and hand.
The documents seem to confirm that Lavergne also sought treatment in Opelousas. Stutes said Lavergne made statements on May 23 to people at OGMC, which is probably Opelousas General Medical Center.
On May 25, Lavergne allegedly made statements to people at the office of someone identified only as G.P.
Law enforcement obtained a search warrant Lavergne’s medical records on file with Dr. Gary Porubsky, who is an orthopedic/hand surgeon in Opelousas.
It also appears law enforcement may have placed a tracking device on Lavergne’s white pickup truck while he was working offshore. The search warrant, obtained from the 25th Judicial District Court in Plaquemines Parish, allowed officials to place a tracking device on Lavergne’s 2009 Chevrolet Silverado. "

LAFAYETTE -- A day after police found the body they believe is missing college student Mickey Shunick, the scientific work needed to confirm her identity has begun.
Wednesday morning, the remains found Tuesday in Evangeline Parish were taken, along with Shunick's dental and medical records, to the LSU Forensic Anthropology Computer Enhancement Services lab for identification, said Keith Talamo of the Lafayette Coroner's Office.
Positive identification of the remains, described by Talamo as badly decomposed, could come today or Friday.

I had prayed for a positive outcome.
Heartbreaking.
The people of LaFayette really showed the rest of us how people should unite and look out for each other. Mickey, although her time was short, had awesome friends. Their faith never waivered, they never lost hope. This news is devastating for them, keep them in your prayers.

I am very glad they got Lavernge off the streets.
There's no telling how many more victims he had/would have had. I hope that was MIckey who knifed him up. I'll bet that was a surprise! Big ole oalf~

That is so sad. I too am grateful that Lavernge is off the streets. Condolences to all that knew her.
I sincerely hope that the death penalty was not removed in exchange for the location, but I fear that it has been. Hopefully, they can nail that slimebag with the DP for one of the other identities they found in his home.

At least that tiny little girl sent him running to the hospital and she didn't go down without a fight. Not that that's any consolation to her family and friends right now. Tough girl she must have been. It's a shame she's gone and he gets to take another breath and open his eyes another morning.Calypso wrote:I am very glad they got Lavernge off the streets.

Too bad she didn't cut him a little deeper in the neck area.
I believe we are all here, in life, for a reason. I'm not sure all what Mickey's purpose was during her short life, but I do know if it wasn't for Mickey, Lisa Pate and her family wouldn't have justice.
If it wasn't for Mickey, this scumbag would still be on the street, free to ravage and murder whoever. Her sacrifice may have saved countless lives.
We know he is responsible for taking the lives of these two women, there's no telling how many other victims he has- dead or alive.
I hope now Mickey and Lisa can rest in peace and their loved ones can have closure and begin to heal.

No telling. If there are others, I hope investigators can find the evidence. This is a news article from Houston, TX re: missing teenager Ali Lowitzer and how they are trying to see if there is any link.

Probably a long shot that it's him, but glad they are at least looking into it.

(KCEN) -- After 82 days of searching the body of the missing Louisiana student Mickey Shunick is recovered.
But now some are questioning if Shunick's disappearance could be connected to the disappearance of a Spring teenager back in 2010.
Sixteen-year-old Ali Lowitzer disappeared while getting off a school bus just feet from her home.

Public still speculating if Lavergne struck deal

It may be a hot topic of discussion in the community, but attorneys and investigators close to the Mickey Shunick case remain mum on the subject of whether accused killer Brandon Scott Lavergne led them to Shunick's body Tuesday.
They also won't say whether a deal was reached in which Lavergne would plead guilty if prosecutors agree not to seek the death penalty.
~Snipped~
"Before a guilty plea can be accepted, the court has to be convinced he's competent," said Kevin Stockstill, a Lafayette attorney who has been involved with capital cases. That means the judge must be sure Lavergne understands all the rights he's giving up, including the right to a trial, the right to confront and cross-examine witnesses and the right to appeal.
Lafayette attorney Tommy Guilbeau, who has defended clients in more than a dozen capital cases, believes a plea date would be set quickly.
"Certainly it would be taken up in the immediate future," Guilbeau said. "It's certainly not something that would drag around."

P.I. in Lowitzer case says it's "just too coincidential"

As the Shunick, and Pate cases, get underway in Lafayette, Agencies in Texas and Louisiana are looking into the possibility Lavergne's arrest could lead to answers in other cases. The private investigator in the case of missing Texas teen, believes just that.
~Snipped~
Ali has been missing for nearly two years, and although there is no concrete evidence linking Brandon Scott Lavergne to her daughter's disappearance, Jo Ann Lowitzer remains hopeful.
"I'm just doing what I hope every parent out there would do for their own child. Never giving up hope for them returning home one day," said Lowitzer.
Since Lavergne's arrest., she has been contacted by law enforcement, requesting she not do any more interviews because of new developments in her daughter's case.

**SNIPPED:
Lavergne signed statements that say he followed Shunick, a 21-year-old University of Louisiana at Lafayette student, down St. Landry Street in his truck. He intentionally hit her bike and persuaded her into his vehicle. She was able to mace him, grab his knife, and stab him several times, giving him what were described as "life-threatening cuts."
He said he grabbed the knife back and stabbed Shunick four times until she fell over.
Lavergne said he assumed Shunick was dead at that point, but when he brought her to a secluded cane field in Acadia Parish she jumped up and regained control of the knife. Shunick stabbed him in the chest.
That's when Lavergne says he grabbed a semi-automatic handgun and shot Shunick in the head, killing her instantly.

The coroner's report confirmed that Mickey died from a gunshot wound to the head. It listed multiple stab wounds as a contributing factor.

I apologize if I have offended with this comment.
It was all I could think as I read what he did to her.

Since Lavergne is locked up for life anyway, prosecutors should see if they can get him to plea to other murders he may have committed in exchange for taking the death penalty off the table in those cases. Of course, it's possible that he has murdered in multiple states, so it could get complicated.
He may have had something to do with Ali Lowitzer's disappearance and an inmate says Lavergne was questioned about multiple murders seven years ago when he was locked up.

A former inmate who served prison time with Lavergne recently spoke publicly about the accused killer. He said investigators questioned Lavergne about multiple murders when he was locked up seven years ago in Dequincy, LA.
"It was somebody very serious," said the man, who wished to remain anonymous. "It was a police agency and they come and questioned him for several hours about the murder of two or three women in the same Lafayette area. He come back several hours later and spoke to me and he was scared to death."
"[I] said, 'Brandon, did you do this?' A heads up question - basically, did you do it? And, instead of saying yes or no, he come back and said, 'I'm not going to tell you that or I can't tell you that,'" the former inmate added.

I'd be willing to bet he is responsible for more than just 2 or 3 murders.
I'm glad Mickey fought him off as hard as she did. I just wish it could have been enough. She should be here, and he shouldn't be.

Every time I see a notice there has been additional comments
on this thread I cringe.. I don't really want
to know, and sometimes I sit here and leave the link alone
until I can scrounge up the courage to check the latest posts.
I just cannot imagine how anyone could kill like this.
I sort of get a murder where people know each other
and there is anger.. not that it is acceptable, but this
guy obviously chose victims he did not know in any way.
I have to wonder why these people are damn afraid
to die. They want the death penalty "off the table"...
Chickenschidtbastards anyway... They can kill, but
are such low life scum they want their own lives spared.
Just not right.

I always heard that people like him want full control and when they loose that they can not accept that fact. That is why he would take a deal so he would be back in full control again and have the last laugh by not getting put to death. It is a mind game he plays in his sick little mind which none of us understand and prayer will never do. Maybe they need to come up with a shot that is given at birth that would stop all of our evil thoughts from that point on. One can dream for a better and safe world but until then maybe carrying a knife like Mickey did is a good idea. It did not save her life but put an end to his sick little games so really in the end she saves more lifes from becoming his next victim. My husband gave my girls little pocket knifes to carry with them when they started driving and to this day they still carry one for protection.

I also carry a pocket knife.
I have given my grand daughters pocket knives
as well.
Of course they really don't need them as they all
grew up being rough and tough and can handle
about any situation.
My Dad was simply not dressed unless he had a
pocket knife, a pair of pliers,a pencil, and a tape
measure. He was a farmer and carpenter. Anyway,
I have those things with me in my car, but the knife
is in my pocket or purse. I also have a screw driver.
Guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to have at least a
small screw driver in ones purse as well.

My daughters wear a curved knife that is sheathed inside a pendant style necklace. The necklace is beautiful and pagan looking and you can not tell there is a wicked blade hiding inside. They both also carry mace in their purses.

Re: Mickey Shunick -- Missing 5/19/12
snipped from page 2 at above link:
Lavergne also pleaded guilty to the murder of Pate, whose body was found in Acadia Parish in 1999. Court documents say Lavergne and Pate checked into a hotel for several days shortly after they first met in Lafayette. Pate eventually told Lavergne she wanted to leave and see her children but Lavergne refused to give her a ride or let her borrow his vehicle to return home.
Court documents say Pate attempted to surreptitiously grab Lavergne’s keys and wallet while he was asleep, but Lavergne caught her and bloodied her face and nose. Pate died a little later and fellow inmates of Lavergne have said Lavergne confessed to suffocating a woman with a plastic bag over her head.
Lavergne later moved Pate’s body to Acadia Parish, where remnants of a plastic bag were found around the body’s skull.

I SO wish Mickey had something like this.
This is a backpack with screaming alarms and flashing lights for children and adults.
Very sturdy and most affordable. Stylish.
Please. Think of investing in something like this for your self or those you love.
And don't forget the college student!

Brandon Lavergne's plea deal doesn't preclude him from future cases
4:14 PM, Aug. 18, 2012
LAFAYETTE -- Brandon Scott Lavergne's guilty plea in the murders of Lisa Pate and Mickey Shunick does not exclude him from prosecution in any other cases that may come forward.
Officials in several surrounding jurisdictions said earlier this summer that they were taking a closer look at some of their unsolved cases. In addition, a private investigator in Texas believes Lavergne may be tied to the April 2010 disappearance of 15-year-old Ali Lowitzer, based on similarities between the truck Lavergne was driving at the time and the one seen near Lowitzer just before she disappeared.

ABSOLUTELY!
And, in those other cases, if they do make the connection, he will still be a candidate for the death penalty.
What a wasted life.

I wish more of these POS would plead guilty and let these families heal. At least with a funeral and memorial this family can start to have some closure. It is so important to be able to say goodbye. My heart is with these people in this very difficult time. I pray for them to have peace!
