Police say missing woman is endangered

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A woman who has not been heard from since Sept. 1 may be endangered, according to police.

Police say Kathleen Haley, 37, last spoke to her family on Sept. 1 and has not been seen since Aug. 22. Haley's family told WAVY.com it took two phone calls to police to file a missing persons report Sept. 7.

"[The officer] felt under the circumstances that it was not at that point a missing persons [case]," Haley's mother said. A second call to police from Haley's family and another officer looking into the case classified it as a missing persons case.

NEWPORT NEWS — Police searched the apartment of Kathleen Haley after her family reported her missing, and they found her entire bed was missing. And there were more details noted in court documents.

A section of carpet had been cut out and removed.

A substance thought to be blood was found on a wall.

Haley's computer was missing.

And what was left behind raises more questions — several pairs of rubber gloves and cleaning supplies found in the bathroom, according to the court documents.

After searching the apartment, a detective wrote "it appeared that there may be more to the scene than a missing person," according to an affidavit for search warrant filed in Newport News Circuit Court.

On Tuesday police released a composite sketch of a man seen in the area of her apartment on Sept. 4 and who might have information in reference to Haley. Newport News police spokeswoman Holly McPherson said police still classify the investigation as a missing person case.

NEWPORT NEWS POLICE: Woman From Area Still Missing

Over the weekend, the Newport News Police department in Virginia put up a posting on Facebook about an endangered missing woman. Investigators say Kathleen Haley, 37, is in danger and no one has seen or heard from her since Aug. 22. Authorities say the last time anyone spoke to Kathleen was on Sept. 1. A missing person report was filed six days later.

“Police believe that Ms. Haley may be endangered because no one has seen or heard from her since September 1, her vehicle is parked at her residence and hasn’t been moved and items are missing from her residence,” said the release on Facebook.

Haley is short, only 5 feet tall and she weighs about 110 pounds. She has hazel eyes and brown hair. Haley’s last known address was in the 2800 block of West Avenue.
