FBI joins search for 10-year-old in Belding; chief calls disappearance 'suspicious'

Authorities are searching in Belding after Devon Morrison, 10, went missing on Saturday, Sept 14.

BELDING, MI — A large, multi-agency search continues in Belding for missing Devon Morrison, who was last seen near his home on Saturday with a fishing pole headed toward the Flat River.

Authorities, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Michigan State Police, have searched the river near downtown with boats and helicopters for the 10-year-old boy, whom police say is well known in this small town community.

The disappearance is considered suspicious, said Belding Police Chief Dale Nelson.

BELDING, MI — Authorities in Belding are searching for a young boy who went missing yesterday after telling his parents he was going fishing.

A dive team has been called in to search the Flat River for missing Devon Morrison, whom Ionia County sheriff’s dispatchers say went missing Saturday, Sept. 14 in Belding.

Morrison left his home near Harrison Street and North York Street on Belding's northeast side to go fishing alone on Saturday and never returned. His mother reported he was last seen wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and black jeans.

The large-scale search of local parks and neighborhoods is being conducted by a coordinated group of police and fire department personnel from the area.

FBI Involved In Belding Boy’s Disappearance

BELDING, Mich- Belding Police Chief Nelson confirms that the FBI has been called in to investigate and foul play is being considered as a possibility in the disappearance of 10 Year old Devon Morrison.

Chief Nelson says a search of the river by a search and rescue team, volunteers and the MSP helicopter has not turned up any sign of the 10 year old. Family members are being questioned by the FBI at this time. The last confirmed sighting of the boy was at 2:30 Saturday afternoon on Harrison street near his home and 2 blocks from the Flat river.

"Morrison was last seen by a neighbor about 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. He left his home near Harrison Street and North York Street on Belding's northeast side about 10:30 a.m. to go fishing alone, as he often does, said Nelson.

Family members reported him missing at 6:15 p.m. after he did not check-in with them on a regular two-hour basis.

A dive team from Kent County was called into search the river with sonar, and a Michigan State Police helicopter conducted infrared imaging of the river and nearby railroad beds during the night.

At 2:30 a.m., a pair of shoes were located in the river by the train trestle near the old Gibson Building site. Nelson said family members are “pretty sure” they belong to Morrison, who was last seen wearing a red hooded sweatshirt with the words ‘starter’ in white, and black jeans."

Currently, authorities are going door-to-door in the city. Community members gathered at the VFW Hall around noon were sent canvass state land north and west of town, but were asked to leave the door-knocking to police.

“You’re looking for anything: clothes, blood, tools, anything that doesn’t look to you like it belongs there,” Ionia Sgt. William Hoskins told the large search party that left in cars to search those areas about 11:45 a.m.

“If you find a fishing pole, we need to know it.”

BELDING, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Police and dozens of volunteers have been the searching for a missing 10-year-old boy.

Police say Devon Morrison went fishing on the Flat River Saturday morning and never returned home. He was last seen around 2:30 p.m. Saturday near his home at the intersection of Harrison and North York streets.

Search crews have been along and in the river since Saturday night. According to Belding Police Chief Dale Nelson, officers are using searching from the air, land and water. A dive team is using sonar. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been questioning family members near the scene.

Police say they plan to continue searching through the night Sunday.

Police say an Amber Alert has not been issued since Morrison does not meet the age specifications and they do not think he was abducted.

BELDING, Mich. (WOOD) - Dozens of members of the Belding community, as well as the FBI, are looking for a missing 10-year-old boy who hasn't been seen since Saturday morning.

Devon Morrison was last seen near Harrison Street and North York Street at his home Saturday. Around 6:30 p.m., the family called authorities to report the boy's disappearance .

Saturday night, police searched the Flat River with Infrared technology, but found nothing. Michigan State Police flew a helicopter in the area Sunday morning and searched the length of the river. Authorities currently believe Devon is not in the river.

BELDING, Mich. (WOOD) - Authorities have put up crime scene tape in an area near the home of a missing 10-year-old Belding boy.

A 24 Hour News 8 crew went to the house Sunday evening to speak with the family. When they arrived, they found police sealing off an area around Devon Morrison's home and police searching the home. Authorities have not told 24 Hour News 8 what they are searching for or why the area is being taped off.

This is happening hours after dozens of members of the Belding community, as well as the FBI, spent the day looking for the missing 10-year-old boy who hasn't been seen since Saturday morning.

Authorities have been speaking with members of Devon's family since Saturday. Devon's mother and his grandfather were held by police for questioning Sunday. It is unknown if they have been released.

It is unknown if Devon's father or his mother's boyfriend have been questioned.

Authorities say they have no suspects at the time, but they are calling the disappearance 'suspicious'. Police say they have looked into sex offenders in the area, but currently, they have been ruled out as suspects.

As the evening went on, more law enforcement vehicles game to the house. At least a dozen agents from various law enforcement agencies went into the house. Some were searching while others were taking pictures inside. It is unknown what the authorities were taking pictures of.

BELDING, MI — Efforts to locate missing 10-year-old Devon Morrison are expected to diminish overnight and resume early Monday with dive teams and K-9 units.

Steve Van Holstyn, a 911 supervisor who was among those running a search command center, said the search will continue after dark Sunday, albeit on a smaller scale.

"There'll still be people out there," he said.

Channel 8 reported police were searching Morrison's home.

A worker in the police investigation command center said the tape was up to keep media and others away during the search.

As of early Sunday afternoon, Belding police Chief Dale Nelson said Morrison's family members had been interviewed, but no suspect or suspicious persons were identified.

Nelson did not return messages seeking comment Sunday evening.

UPDATE 11 P.M. (WZZM) -- Police have removed crime scene tape from around the home of 10-year-old Devon Morrison, who has been missing since Saturday.

UPDATE 10:00 p.m.: Police put tape up outside the Belding home of 10-year old Devon Morrison. Officers are searching the home, as well as the property behind it.

A group of 15 people are standing outside the taped-off area holding a vigil. We'll have more on WZZM 13 news at 11:00.

BELDING, Mich. (WZZM) - Police and rescue crews will be expanding their search Monday for Devon Morrison, 10.

Belding Police Chief Dale Nelson told gathered media Monday morning that the search in the Flat River will be expanded, using more technology, including sonar, and divers to check areas searched on Sunday.

Police are asking that people looking to volunteer in the search not to come out today. Chief Nelson asked that everyone check their own yards and garages and report anything that may be of help to investigators. Anyone with tips is asked to call Ionia Silent Observer at 616-527-0107, Belding Police at 616-794-1900 x.226, or Ionia Central Dispatch at 616-527-0400.

The chief also said that police did put up crime scene tape around the Morrison residence while they performed a search last night to gather more information and materials. The tape was primarily used to preserve the scene so that K9 units could get a fresh scent to use in the search for Devon.

BELDING, Mich. — While considering for now the disappearance of 10-year-old Devon Morrison as suspicious, Belding Police Chief Dale Nelson seemed reluctant to think of foul play as part of the disappearance.

Chief Nelson spoke to reporters in a news conference around 9:45 a.m. Monday.

When asked about foul play, Nelson said police continue the investigation as a suspicious incident. The last confirmed sighting of Devon was around 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

A pair of Devon’s shoes was found in the waters of the Flat River during the earlier search.

No tips have panned out, he said.

UDPATE - BELDING, Mich. (WZZM) - Search and rescues crews in Belding, looking for Devon Morrison, 10, have closed off the bridge over Ashfield Road and have moved media and bystanders back from the scene.

WZZM 13's crew at the scene report that the dive team is active in the area.

Police have scheduled a 2:00pm press conference to update us on the search.

BELDING, Mich. - Authorities on Monday said they had found the body of a 10-year-old west Michigan boy who disappeared over the weekend after leaving home to go fishing.

The FBI and state police had been aiding the search, which was about 25 miles northeast of Grand Rapids. Authorities had been searching the river with boats and helicopters.

Nelson said investigators are still piecing together exactly what happened and couldn't yet elaborate on whether the case would be considered criminal or not.

BELDING, MI -- The body of 10-year-old Devon Morrison was found about 12:30 p.m. today near one of his favorite fishing spots, Belding police Chief Dale Nelson said.

Morrison went missing Saturday afternoon and police and volunteers searched unsuccessfully for him since Saturday night.

Today, however, divers found his body near the Ashfield Street bridge.

Nelson would not definitely say the death is accidental, pending an autopsy and "taking care of evidence," but said there are no suspects in the case.

Two memorials were held in Belding last night for the young boy who drowned in the Flat River.

Devon Morrison's mother says her 10-year old son loved to fish.

Shauna Smith says she's trying to deal with a future without Devon in it, telling WOOD TV that her son would sneak off to go fishing.

She finds nothing suspicious about his drowning, but the police will not close the case until the autopsy can conclude there was no other cause of death.

Missing Boy’s Custody File

IONIA, Mich. — Police and community members continue to look Devon Morrison. FOX 17 has obtained copies of the custody file for the missing 10 year old through Ionia County.

The file shows various hearings involving ‘parenting time’ and child support. Danny Morrison and Shauna Smith are listed as Devon Morrison’s parents. Smith and Morrison share custody, but Smith has Devon the majority of the time. Danny Morrison was ordered to pay child support.

The case file stems from Roscommon County and dates back to 2008. In 2010, the custody file was transferred to Ionia County since Smith and Morrison had both moved from the Roscommon area.

Preliminary Findings Show Accidental Drowning in The Death of Devon Morrison

BELDING,Mich. — An autopsy was performed on Devon Morrison Tuesday September 17 at Blodgett Hospital. Preliminary finding from the examination shows the death as accidental drowning. Final results will be released when they become available.

Morrison was last seen the morning of Saturday September 14 and search crews from several organizations, including the FBI, were investigating.

According to police, Morrison’s body was discovered near his favorite fishing place by the Ashfield Street Bridge.

Funeral Plans Set For Devon Morrison

BELDING, Mich. — Funeral arrangements for Devon Morrison, 10, have been set.

The boy’s body was found Monday in the Flat River. He’d been missing since Saturday. Devon’s mother said he went fishing earlier in the day. Police said preliminary results from an autopsy indicate that Devon’s drowning was accidental.

Viewing is scheduled for Thursday, September 19, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. It will be held at the Houghton Lake Christler Funeral Home.

Morrison’s funeral will be held Friday, September 20 at 11 a.m. at the same location.

The family established the Devon Morrison Memorial Fund, and donations can be made at any Independent Bank in Michigan. This will help the family pay for funeral and burial expenses.

FOX 17 learned that a memorial will be held Monday, September 23 at 7 p.m. in Belding.

A family friend of Morrison’s said the viewing, memorial, and funeral are all open to the public.
