The 17-year-old boy accused of killing Jessica Ridgeway likely will be the first high-profile teenage defendant to test a new law designed to make it more difficult to charge juveniles as adults.

Austin Sigg on Tuesday will be formally charged related to the abduction and death of 10-year-old Jessica and likely for the attempted abduction in May of an adult jogger near Ketner Lake.

Jefferson County District Attorney Scott Storey anticipates charging Sigg, who will turn 18 on Jan. 17, as an adult.

"That's the appropriate thing to do," Storey said Thursday.

GOLDEN, Colo. -- Prosecutors say a teenager who allegedly confessed to killing a 10-year-old Colorado girl and attacking a runner also sexually assaulted the girl.

Seventeen-year-old Austin Sigg was charged as an adult with 17 counts in both cases Tuesday. They include four murder charges.

In charging documents, prosecutors said Sigg acted alone in kidnapping, robbing, and sexually assaulting Jessica. The robbery charge involved Jessica's backpack and water bottle, which were found in another suburb three days after she disappeared while walking to school Oct. 5.

"Austin Reed Sigg unlawfully and feloniously, acting alone, committed sexual assault, and in the course of or in furtherance of that crime, caused the death of Jessica Ridgeway," according to court documents.

" The 17-year-old who allegedly confessed to the murder of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway was formally charged as an adult today in Jefferson County, Colo., court.

Austin Sigg was charged with 17 counts. Eleven of the charges were related to Ridgeway's disappearance and subsequent death, including first-degree murder with deliberation, felony murder, second-degree kidnapping, sexual assault on a child, and robbery.

The other six charges pertained to Sigg's attempted abduction of a 22-year-old jogger in May 2012, and included attempted first-degree murder, sexual assault with criminal intent and second-degree kidnapping.

If he's convicted, Sigg faces a minimum of 40 years in jail before he can be considered for parole. "

I must have been under a rock... I wasn't aware that the autopsy report was back stating that Jessica has been sexually assaulted.. That poor child .

I have to question what the 3 hash marks are on the cross that was found with her body! I don't want to jump to assumptions, but it has been nagging at me since we learned of the cross.

I agree Freckles he should be charged with the mutilation of a corpse and illegal transport of a corpse.

I hope that the younger brother is having a psychological work up done on him to ensure that there is no deviance in his psychological make up.

Yeah, makes you wonder if he was keeping score of his victims. Then again, it could just be symbolic of the 3 crosses at Golgotha, not that I expect him to be that religious.

GOLDEN - Austin Sigg will now be housed in the special housing unit at the Jefferson county detention center.

He is the first juvenile detainee in three years to be housed at the detention center.

Jacki Kelley, a spokeswoman for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department told 9NEWS that Sigg will be escorted everywhere by a deputy.

Sigg will be kept away from all other adult prisoners. He will not be able to see or hear them. When being moved around the facility, the jail staff will have to lock other inmates down while Sigg is in that specific part of the facility. The restrictions will be in place for 53 days, until Sigg turns 18 in January. Then the jail staff will assess what's safe for him.

Was Jessica's body found? Or just trying him because he said he did it? I have not follow this story much, but since he has been charged with killing her, this story needs to be moved out of the missing threads and the title needs to be changed.

GOLDEN | A teen charged with kidnapping and killing a 10-year-old Colorado girl and attacking a runner is scheduled in court Wednesday.



Austin Sigg, 17, has been charged as an adult, including a murder charge in the death of Jessica Ridgeway, who disappeared Oct. 5 as she was walking to school in the west Denver suburb of Westminster. Sigg also is accused in an attack on a 22-year-old woman, who escaped, in Jessica’s neighborhood in May.

The hearing was expected to provide prosecutors and defense attorneys an opportunity to argue procedural matters involving the case. The major issues have already been decided after a judge last month ruled that Sigg would be tried as an adult and that he would be incarcerated in an adult jail.

Sigg, who turns 18 next month, is charged with four counts of murder, two counts of kidnapping, and one count each of sexual assault on a child and robbery in Jessica’s abduction and slaying. He’s charged with attempted murder, attempted sexual assault and attempted second-degree kidnapping in the attack on the runner.

Jessica's body was retrieved from a field.
A landscape crew, picking up trash, found an unusual bag near a water culvert.
Her body was placed inside.

Under his home other items were found relating to this case.

WESTMINSTER - Westminster Police have made an arrest in the Jessica Ridgeway case.

9Wants To Know has confirmed that partial remains were found at the house where the suspect in the Jessica Ridgeway murder was arrested.

The suspect, 17-year-old Austin Reed Sigg, was taken into custody on Tuesday night. Sources tell 9NEWS the mother of Sigg somehow found out about his possible involvement in Jessica's disappearance. Sigg's mother called the police Tuesday night to turn him in.

Investigators interviewed Sigg for about six hours. 9Wants To Know has learned he provided them specific details about the crime that only someone intimately involved would know.

GOLDEN, Colo. — A Colorado teenager told a 911 dispatcher last fall that he kidnapped and killed a missing suburban Denver school girl and hid her remains in a crawl space at his mother's home, according to a recording played by a prosecutor in court Friday.

The recording was played at a preliminary hearing at which a judge decided there's enough evidence for Austin Sigg to stand trial in both the death of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway and an attack on a jogger at nearby Ketner Lake in May.

Westminster police Detective Michael Lynch testified at the hearing that Sigg first confessed to his mother, telling her that he kidnapped Jessica as she walked past his car, bound her arms and her legs, placed her in the back seat, drove around for a little bit, then took her to his house.

GOLDEN, Colo. -- A search that set parents in the Denver area on edge last fall, had neighbors casting a suspicious eye on neighbors, and left a family grieving the loss of a 10-year-old ended with the teen suspect telling a 911 dispatcher: "I murdered Jessica Ridgeway. I have proof that I did it."

He told the 911 dispatcher that some of Jessica's remains were in the crawl space at his mother's house, according to a recording of the Oct. 23 call played in court during his preliminary hearing Friday. Fifth-grader Jessica disappeared Oct. 5 after she left her house to meet a schoolmate two blocks away so they could walk to school together.

A judge ordered Austin Sigg, 18, to stand trial and be held without bail for Jessica's slaying and a May attack on a jogger at Ketner Lake, which is across the street from Jessica's elementary school. In the attack on the jogger, investigator Michael Lynch testified that Sigg used homemade chloroform concocted with a recipe found on the Internet to attempt to subdue a woman.

GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) - A Colorado teen pleaded not guilty Friday to murder and kidnapping in the kidnap-slaying and dismemberment of a 10-year-old girl that panicked Denver-area residents last fall – despite police testimony that the youth had confessed to the crime.

Austin Sigg, 18, stunned a courtroom by entering the not guilty pleas in the death of Jessica Ridgeway in the Denver suburb of Westminster. Sigg also pleaded not guilty to a May attack on a 22-year-old jogger at a lake in Jessica's neighborhood.

Sigg's not guilty pleas came despite his alleged confession and the discovery of some of the girl's remains at his home. He also confessed to the jogger attack, police say.

Trial was set for Sept. 23.

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — It’s been almost a year since the body of Jessica Ridgeway was found dismembered in a Denver Colorado suburb. The man accused of killing her will soon head to trial.

Opening arguments are scheduled for October 3 in Austin Sigg’s murder trial in Colorado. Jessica lived there when she died, but has family in Independence, Mo.
They plan to travel to Colorado for Sigg’s trial.

Ridgeway’s family is still scraping together the money they need to make the trip. While they don’t think justice will truly be served in the case, they say they want to make sure Sigg won’t be able to hurt anyone else.

GOLDEN — Nearly one year after 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway disappeared on her way to school, Austin Sigg pleaded guilty on Tuesday in her kidnapping, murder and dismemberment.

A judge accepted the plea, which was entered against the advice of Sigg's attorneys. The plea on just the first-degree murder charge will send him to prison for life with the possibility of parole after 40 years.

A two-day sentencing hearing has been scheduled to start on Nov. 18. Prosecutors said they would argue for consecutive sentences for some charges.

Sigg, 18, pleaded guilty to 15 counts less than 72 hours before opening statements were scheduled to begin in his murder trial.

In July, Munsinger severed the two charges connected with the attack at Ketner Lake — attempted kidnapping and a violent crime involving a weapon — and ruled that those charges will go forward as a separate trial.
