Robert Durst, the subject of the HBO series "The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst," has been arrested on a capital murder warrant issued by police in Los Angeles related to the death of his friend, Susan Berman, his attorney said today.

Durst, 71, was arrested by FBI agents Saturday afternoon at a New Orleans hotel, a day before the final episode of the HBO series airs, a law enforcement source briefed on the investigation told ABC News.

FBI agents believed Durst may have wanted to leave the country, as he registered under an alias at the hotel, paid with cash, and was found with fake documents, said the source.

Robert Durst, scion of one of New York's largest real estate empires, has been arrested in New Orleans on a murder warrant issued by Los Angeles County, the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office said.

Durst, born in 1943, is known for life twists that led him to be questioned but not charged in the mysterious deaths of his first wife Kathleen Durst in 1982 and a longtime friend in 2000.

The New York Times reported last week that the district attorney in Los Angeles had recently reopened an investigation into the December 2000 killing of Durst's friend Susan Berman, and was tying it to the case of Kathleen Durst, who went missing from New York and was eventually pronounced legally dead.

The investigation could be bolstered by new evidence shown for the first time in a six-part HBO documentary series about Durst called "The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst," the New York Times said.

(CNN)—New York real estate heir Robert Durst has been arrested in a 14-year-old slaying in Los Angeles, police said Sunday.

The 71-year-old millionaire was arrested without incident in New Orleans, where he had been staying at a hotel, Saturday night in connection with the 2000 slaying of his longtime friend, crime writer Susan Berman, Los Angeles police said.

Berman was was found shot to death in her home in Beverly Hills in December 2000.

Durst was jailed without bond in New Orleans on an outstanding warrant from Los Angeles County and was awaiting an extradition hearing Monday morning.

Robert Durst, the subject of both an HBO series and law enforcement scrutiny, asked himself off-camera in the closing moments of the final episode of the documentary tonight, “What the hell did I do?” before answering, “Killed them all, of course.”

Filmmakers asked Durst about similarities in handwriting in a letter he wrote and another linked to one of the killings to which he has been linked, The Associated Press reported, before he wore his microphone into the bathroom.

That’s when he apparently said to himself, "There it is. You're caught" and "What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course."

Durst, 71, has never been charged in connection with the unsolved 2000 murder of Berman in the Hollywood section of Los Angeles, who was killed as cold-case detectives prepared to question her in the 1982 disappearance of his wife, Kathie.

He was acquitted in the 2001 dismemberment death of his Galveston neighbor, Morris Black, because he said the killing was in self-defense.

Defense lawyer Chip Lewis, who successfully defended Durst in the Black killing, said his client will waive extradition and be transported to Los Angeles to face the charges.

"He's maintained his innocence for years," Lewis said. "Nothing has changed."

He is being held with bond.

Lewis, the attorney, said the arrest was orchestrated by Hollywood to come before the final episode.

"No doubt," he said. "It's all about Hollywood now." Lewis said he was familiar with the Berman killing and wasn't surprised by the arrest because of the number of emails and calls he got after last week's episode aired.

He said new evidence touted by producers, however, was something he was already familiar with.

"I know all about this case," Lewis said. "I have no doubt we will present a most compelling defense."

Suspicion has shadowed Robert Durst at every odd, bloody turn.

Three times people close to the eccentric – some have said mentally ill – New York real estate scion have vanished or been killed. He has played the role of suspect, person of interest or defendant, each time confounding authorities as they have tried and failed and tried again to build murder cases against him.

Now, once again, police think they have the goods on him.

“As a result of investigative leads and additional evidence that has come to light in the past year, investigators have identified Robert Durst as the person responsible for Ms. Berman's death,” the LAPD said in a statement issued Sunday.

Durst, accompanied by two attorneys, appeared briefly Sunday before a judge in a New Orleans courtroom. The judge ordered him held without bail and set a hearing for Monday morning to address Durst’s extradition to Los Angeles.

Real estate heir Robert Durst will be heading back to California to face a first-degree murder charge after waiving extradition during a hearing Monday.

Durst, 71, appeared before a judge in New Orleans. He was arrested Saturday in New Orleans on murder charges the night before an HBO documentary broadcast audio of him muttering "What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course."

Durst was taken into custody by FBI agents at a J.W. Marriott hotel for the 2000 murder of Susan Berman in her Beverly Hills, Calif. home, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said.

Durst had been laying low in the hotel to avoid the growing attention at his Houston home, his lawyer said.

He shuffled into the courtroom with his hands shackled at his waist, wearing sandals and an orange jumpsuit. He appeared to fall asleep just before the hearing started and later answered "yes" to questions from the judge about whether he was waiving extradition.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A police report says wealthy eccentric Robert Durst was in possession of a revolver when he was arrested at a New Orleans hotel on a murder charge in the death of his friend in Los Angeles.

Durst waived extradition Monday and is expected to be taken to Los Angeles to face the murder charge. His attorney says the extradition is being delayed because prosecutors in New Orleans are considering charges.

It's not clear what those charges are. The district attorney's office is not commenting.

Why Robert Durst’s “Killed Them All” Confession Won't Work in Court

Sure, this may sound like a confession to the two murders and one disappearance (also a likely death) to which allegations have linked Durst. However, as a legal matter, these words may not stand in court due to the hearsay rule, which has already become a point of contention among legal experts. Alternatively, the defense could try to use the audio bite to its advantage, as evidence of its client’s insanity.

Durst’s lawyer, Chip Lewis, couldn’t be reached for comment, but during an appearance on Fox News Channel's Justice With Judge Jeanine he said: "You've said things under your breath that you probably didn't mean.”

HOUSTON (AP) — Police on Tuesday were searching the Houston home of millionaire Robert Durst after his arrest over the weekend in New Orleans.

Durst, 71, is charged with murder in a Los Angeles killing 15 years ago, and has been suspected — but never charged — in the disappearance of his first wife in New York. In 2003, he was acquitted of murder in a dismemberment death in Texas.

On Tuesday afternoon, a marked Houston police car and three unmarked cars were in front of a 17-story building in Houston's Rice Village neighborhood where Durst has three condominiums. At least five plainclothes officers were working inside the guarded building. Two of the officers were seen walking to a nearby unmarked car, retrieving a small bag from the trunk and returning to the building.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A magistrate has ordered that millionaire Robert Durst be held without bond on weapons charges in Louisiana.

Magistrate Harry Cantrell said that based on what he heard in Monday's bond hearing and on court documents, the 71-year-old Durst is both a flight risk and a danger to others.

Durst was seated beside his lawyers, his hands shackled to his sides in padded cuffs. He has been in a prison's mental health unit for nearly a week. Officials have called him a suicide risk.

Robert Durst Appears in Court But None of His Lawyer's Witnesses Show Up

A shouting match erupted in court today during a hearing for Robert Durst and the various charges he faces relating to his arrest in New Orleans last month.

... Today's court appearance in New Orleans was slated as a preliminary hearing relating on whether or not Durst should be tried in Louisiana for the gun and drugs charges or if he will be extradited to California to face the murder charge.

Durst's defense team, who have repeatedly proclaimed that he is innocent of Berman's murder (though they have not yet had to enter a formal plea), had subpoenaed the FBI agents and state trooper related to his arrest, along with a former New York district attorney who had been involved with the investigation into his first wife's disappearance.

But none of those witnesses showed up -- leading state prosecutors to shout at Durst's defense attorney Dick DeGuerin.

That's when the judge decided to call for a postponement, pushing the hearing back to next Thursday, at which time the FBI agents and others subpoenaed could face contempt of court charges.

REPORTING FROM HOUSTON - Attorneys for embattled real estate millionaire Robert Durst have asked a judge to find that there was no probable cause for authorities to pursue charges in Louisiana and that they should now release him for extradition to California.

In court paperwork filed Friday, Durst's attorneys allege that Louisiana officials failed to establish probable cause to indict Durst at his preliminary hearing Thursday, presenting an arrest warrant but calling no witnesses in a "misguided attempt to conceal the facts from the court, the defendant, and the public."

At the hearing, Asst. Orleans Parish Dist. Atty. Mark Burton repeatedly challenged Durst's defense team to call witnesses themselves other than the three law enforcement officials who stopped and arrested their client. The trio - two FBI agents and a Louisiana state trooper - had been subpoenaed by the defense, but succeeded in delaying their appearance until next week.

Robert Durst’s involvement with the HBO documentary series “The Jinx” wasn’t the first time that the now-jailed real estate heir opened up about his connection to a pair of unsolved cases -- the disappearance of his first wife and the murder of his friend, for which he is now charged.

Durst spoke at length during a DVD audio commentary for the 2010 film, “All Good Things,” loosely based upon his life story -- and reacted as he apparently watched a fictionalized version of his life play out before his eyes.

Durst noted during the commentary for the DVD, which first came out in 2011, how some scenes, including disturbing ones showing fights he allegedly had with his wife, were remarkably “close” to how he said they happened in real life.

Durst now is being held in a Louisiana jail after being arrested for the murder of his friend, Susan Berman, and facing weapons and drug possession charges stemming from items found during his arrest. Durst and his lawyers have maintained his innocence in Berman's killing.

A grand jury charged Durst with possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of both a firearm and an illegal drug: 5 ounces of marijuana, said Assistant District Attorney Chris Bowman, spokesman for the district attorney.

Real estate heir Robert Durst pleaded not guilty to a federal gun charge Tuesday in New Orleans, leading one friend and employee to believe Durst will never be extradited to face a murder charge in California.

...His arraignment on the California arrest warrant was postponed Monday and transferred to the same court that will handle his next hearing on the state gun charges May 7. His federal trial date has been set for June 22.

Murder suspect Robert Durst — who is worth about $100 million, according to the FBI's estimate — is demanding that authorities return $161,000 seized after his arrest.

In court papers filed Thursday, lawyers for the subject of HBO's "The Jinx" said the cash "is not needed as evidence, is not contraband, and is not subject to forfeiture" and should be returned.

When FBI agents apprehended the real-estate scion at the J.W. Marriott hotel in New Orleans on March 14, they found stacks of hundred-dollar bills totaling more than $44,000. They also found a tracking number for a UPS parcel, which they intercepted; it contained another $117,000. Authorities say they believe Durst, 71, was amassing cash for a life on the run.

But a resolution of the case for which multimillionaire real estate scion Robert Durst has been a suspect the longest — the Jan. 31, 1982, disappearance and presumed death of his first wife Kathie — has eluded law enforcement. What evidence do Westchester investigators have against the Scarsdale native and what are they lacking?

WHAT THEY DON'T HAVE

A Body: Not a deal breaker for a murder prosecution but close. There's inherent reasonable doubt — "What do you mean he killed her? Prove she's dead." Westchester prosecutors won a murder conviction against Werner Lippe in the 2008 death of his wife, who was believed to have been burned in an oil drum. But in Lippe's case, he confessed and prosecutors used some of his activities in the wake of her disappearance to corroborate the confession.

...WHAT THEY HAVE

Durst's Lies: Durst remains adamant about putting Kathie on the 9:17 Manhattan-bound train in Katonah on Jan. 31, 1982. But he has acknowledged lying to police about later speaking with her by phone. It was a key detail that, along with a dubious sighting of her later that night, kept New York City detectives from looking at the South Salem cottage.

"I don't know how he killed her but I don't think she ever got on the train, that's for sure," Edward Murphy, a senior investigator with the Westchester District Attorney's Office, said on the documentary.

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - The trial of real estate scion and accused murderer Robert Durst on a federal weapons charge in New Orleans has been delayed until September after his lawyers requested more time to prepare his defense, court records show.

Durst's lawyers had sought his speedy extradition to Los Angeles County, where prosecutors want him in connection with the 2000 killing of a longtime friend, Susan Berman, in a case recently chronicled in the HBO documentary series "The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst."

But by asking for an extension in the weapons case, in which Durst has pleaded not guilty to a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm, Durst's lawyers appear to have conceded he will be in Louisiana for the foreseeable future.

Louisiana gun charges against real estate heir Robert Durst were dismissed Thursday, clearing the way for federal proceedings in New Orleans in a similar case.

Durst, a millionaire who also faces a murder charge in an unrelated California case, remains jailed without bond in Louisiana. Durst was arrested at a New Orleans hotel in March. Authorities said he had a gun and marijuana in his room.

Millionaire murder suspect Robert Durst may soon be scrounging for money.

The Post has learned his brother, real estate giant Douglas Durst, settled a lawsuit against filmmaker Andrew Jarecki, confirming that Robert was the source of leaked materials about the family for “The Jinx,” the HBO documentary that led to the accused killer’s recent arrest.

The deal, inked Thursday, means Douglas can move to freeze $74 million of his older sibling’s $100 million fortune.

A source told The Post during litigation seeking to determine Jarecki’s sources that if Douglas could prove Robert Durst leaked the information, “the next step is freezing his money.”

...After the airing of the second-to-last episode of a recent HBO documentary miniseries about Durst — an episode that law enforcement authorities believe prompted his departure from Houston under an assumed identity — a Campbell Hall, New York, woman who is not his wife leapt into action to help him. But Susan Giordano, who has previously been described simply as a longtime friend of Durst, disputes the agency’s characterization of the pair’s relationship as romantic.

“We were just good friends. We still are,” she said Thursday. “I don’t know where they got that. We’ve been friends for decades. Like I said, we’re just really close friends.”

Lawyers for Robert Durst plan to challenge handwriting analysis that links the millionaire murder suspect to the so-called "cadaver" note that alerted police to the death of a friend of Durst in 2000, records in federal court in New Orleans indicate.

The two-line note, addressed to police in "Beverely Hills" and postmarked the day Susan Berman was shot dead in her home, has been trouble for Durst: the block-letter script looks like the scrawl Durst used in a note to Berman and other correspondence.

Robert Durst asks to delay trial on federal gun charges

Attorneys for Robert Durst have asked to delay his New Orleans trial on a federal gun charge by one to two months. Last week's motion comes as Durst's team is engaged in a multi-front battle to knock down key evidence in the case.

It stems from a search of Durst's hotel room in March. FBI agents found a loaded pistol in Durst's room at the JW Marriott hotel, but Durst's attorneys say the search was illegal. They say that as the Sept. 20 trial date nears, they are still awaiting rulings on whether evidence from the search will be allowed.

Armed with Robert Durst’s stunning admission in a TV documentary, the family of his first wife is now suing the cross-dressing millionaire over her murder 33 years ago.

James McCormack filed papers in Manhattan Surrogate’s Court on Thursday asking for authority over the estate of his sister, Kathleen Durst, who disappeared in 1982, so that he could sue Durst, who has been the only suspect in her death.

Robert Durst Expected to Plead Guilty to Weapons Charge

Next month, New York real estate heir and suspected murderer Robert Durst is expected to amend his initial plea on a federal gun charge.

According to court records obtained by PEOPLE, Durst, 72, will appear during "change of plea" hearing that is scheduled for Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. He initially pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The unusual and dated “right to sepulcher” case was filed by Kathleen’s three sisters and 101-year-old mother​,​ Ann McCormack​,​ in Nassau County Supreme Court Monday.

Kathleen Durst's family on Thursday asked a judge to declare her legally dead, 34 years after she disappeared while married to real estate heir — and alleged killer — Robert Durst.

Kathleen Durst's sister, Carol Bamonte, asked the Manhattan Surrogate’s Court to fix the date of her death at January 31, 1982, when she disappeared just a few weeks shy of graduating from medical school.

Durst's other two sisters, Mary Hughes of Manhattan and Virginia McKeon of Hampden, Mass., said the family is more convinced than ever that their brother-in-law killed his wife at the couple's weekend retreat in South Salem and disposed of the body.
