Utah discovery thought to be grave of mother missing since December 2009

DELTA, Utah — A search in the Utah desert for a missing mother is expected to resume Friday at a site that authorities said contained human remains but had not turned up any body parts or clothing.

Cadaver dogs discovered the location Wednesday amid a renewed search for Susan Cox Powell, and investigators earlier declared that they had found human remains.

But authorities said as they shut down excavating for the day at 6 p.m. MDT (8 p.m. EDT) that no bones or clothing had been found. Digging is scheduled to resume 9 a.m. Friday, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

Police did not say why they earlier stated that they had found human remains when they had not seen any.

"Right now, we haven't found anything except for these scents that these dogs are picking up," said West Valley City Police Lt. Bill Merritt. "We have not come across bones."

Topaz Mountain • Undeterred by their failure to find any tangible sign of missing West Valley City mother Susan Cox Powell during seven days of searching, police vowed Sunday to continue their efforts in the desert near Delta.

The number of searchers on Sunday climbed to about 100 — the largest group yet to assemble in the area near Topaz Mountain — as the focus expanded from the east side of the popular rock-hounding area to the west side of the range.

But at the end of the day, there were no new discoveries.

Charred wood in Susan Powell case could bring answers

As investigators continue to comb the Juab County desert for signs of missing West Valley City mother Susan Powell, experts are examining charred wood police found there and believe was used to burn human remains.

Last week, cadaver dogs alerted their handlers to the presence of human remains in an area where about 100 small pieces of wood were discovered buried near Topaz Mountain.

Lab work on the recovered wood would generally take three days — but perhaps longer depending on a number of factors, said Tim Kupferschmid, executive director at South Salt Lake-City based Sorenson Forensics, who has more than 20 years of experience in forensic DNA testing.

Washington state authorities Thursday arrested the father-in-law of missing West Valley City woman Susan Cox Powell but said the arrest is not related to her disappearance.

Pierce County Jail records showed Steven Powell, 61, was booked about 11:30 p.m. MST on suspicion of 14 counts of voyeurism and one count of possessing depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Bail was not immediately set.

The Tacoma, Wash., News Tribune reported that detectives found more than 2,000 images of girls and women in Powell’s Puyallup, Wash., home during a search last month. Washington deputies and West Valley City police served a search warrant at the home of Steven Powell looking for evidence related to the December 2009 disappearance of the 28-year-old mother of two. Josh Powell, her husband, and their two children are living at the Puyallup home too.

The two boys reportedly have since been taken into protective custody by Washington state child welfare officials.

I could tell from the first time I heard him talk about Susan being sexual with him that he was putting on her his own deviant behavior. I wonder if Susan found out about him (perhaps one of her children complained about grandpa?) and she confronted him on it. I would not be surprised if he murdered her.

Judge prohibits publication of Susan Powell's diaries

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash.—

A Pierce County, Wash. judge Friday ordered that Susan Cox Powell's diaries can not be published.

The ruling comes after the parents of the missing West Valley City woman, Chuck and Judy Cox, filed an injunction in an effort to stop their son-in-law Josh Powell and his father Steven from posting excerpts of the diaries on a website the Powells created in 2010.

Charles Cox said after court Friday. He went on to say that he is doing everything he can to get custody of his grandchildren.The father of Susan Cox Powell, the woman missing since 2009, filed for custody of her children Friday.

Susan’s father, Charles Cox, filed the petition arguing that the children’s father, Josh Powell, is not a suitable custodian. The petition said, “mother [Susan Cox Powell] has been missing since December 2009 and petitioners [Charles and Judith Cox] believe father [Josh Powell] is responsible for her disappearance.”

The custody petition comes just a day after Josh Powell’s father Steven Craig Powell, 61, was arrested on 14 counts of voyeurism involving two child victims and one count of possession of depictions of minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

Josh and Susan Powell’s two sons were removed from Steven Powell’s home and placed in protective custody following his arrest. “I’m relieved that the children are no longer in the household,”

Ellensburg, Wash. • Over the course of their long-standing friendship, Sandy Crain Anderson learned two things about Steve Powell.

Powell was into pornography. And he was obsessed with his daughter-in-law, Susan Cox Powell.

Anderson shared her knowledge about Powell with West Valley City Police in January 2010, weeks after Susan disappeared. She called again nine months later, after Powell confided to her that a police search of his Puyallup home had overlooked his porn cache, along with his collection of clothing and journals belonging to Susan. She even sent police notes and a map Powell had made outlining his own theory about his daughter-in-law’s disappearance.

It was a very interesting show. An eyeopener for me on some of the things Susan endured and what went on as Josh was moving out of his Utah home. Its 108:49 minutes in length and every bit worth it.

Going back over all of this information, some of which I just breezed through the first time, I'm beginning to believe that Susan is alive. I read the document that Steven Powell put together connecting the disappearance of Steve Keocher with Susan and he makes mention that Susan may have been sold into the sex trade and is a sex slave. According to a former friend of Steven's, he has an addiction to pornography and an obsession that hasn't abated for Susan. The more I read at SusanPowell.org the more I believe he was using that site to torment Susan-the update of the kids he would probably let her see along with his beratings of Susan's friends and family in this horrible situation. It would keep her broken and submissive. I wonder if Josh had been poisoning Susan because she was sick for three weeks before her disappearance. Josh was very loving toward Susan that last day she was seen alive. He had told the friend that stayed for the brunch that Susan might not be available later for when she wanted to return the untangled yarn they were working on. He prepared the late brunch one plate at a time. maybe he put something in her pancakes (of which he called his father for the recipe-huh?) to knock her out. Once she was knocked out his father kidnapped her while Josh was on his midnight camping trip in freezing cold temps.

Josh threw a fit when his father was arrested and the kids were taken from him. He did not want a divorce which would, most likely, mean losing his kids. Josh was talking to his father more often and for hours towards the days before Susan disappeared and he would hang up from those phone conversations angry with Susan. She tried to tell Josh that his father wanted her all to himself and that he was trying to drive a wedge between them. Josh blamed her for those unwanted advances, btw. The more I think on this the more I believe what others have been theorizing all along-that Susan was abducted by her father in law and has been kept somewhere for his deviant pleasure. I hope she is found quickly now-like her own father has said, he feels the answers are soon forthcoming.

I really hope you are right about Susan being alive, Sherry. What you said makes a lot of sense, but after this long of time, i don't hold out much hope of her being found, let alone alive.

I think she loved those boys so much, and did whatever she could to keep their lives normal, even while such depravity was going on in the background. If she had it to do over, I am sure she would have taken her kids and fled far away from those degenerate turd balls.

The lawyer for Susan Powell's father, Chuck Cox, filed a court motion last week asking that custody for the boys be granted to their maternal grandfather after the boys' paternal grandfather, Steven Powell, was arrested on charges of voyeurism and possession of child pornography.

TACOMA, Wash. — The husband of a missing Utah woman is the subject of a voyeurism and pornography investigation and may have had some involvement in his father's child pornography case, a Washington state prosecutor said in court Tuesday.

Josh Powell denied any knowledge of or involvement in the case of his father, Steven Powell, who is in jail after police arrested him last Thursday. He is accused of possessing hundreds of sexual images of women and girls taken without their knowledge.

The new information came up as Josh Powell and his in-laws, Chuck and Judy Cox, appeared in Pierce County family court in a custody battle for Susan Powell's two young sons. The state granted temporary custody of the two boys to Chuck and Judy Cox.

TACOMA, Wash. -- The children of Josh Powell and missing woman Susan Cox Powell will not be returned to their father and will likely stay with their maternal grandparents, Chuck and Judy Cox.
After two recesses between discussions of whether the court proceedings could be streamed over the Internet, the actual custody hearing got under way at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Attorney John Long with the Attorney General’s Office used the voyeurism and child pornography case involving Powell's father, Steven, to convince the judge the children should not be returned to the home where Powell, Steven Powell and the children lived.
Steven Powell was arrested last week and charged in connection with videos that were found during a search of the home. After the arrest, Chuck Cox, the father of Susan Cox Powell, filed for custody of the children.
Long said it was not proper for the children to live in the home while the investigation against Steven Powell was in progress, and as of Tuesday, investigators had only viewed 5 percent of the material on Steven Powell’s computers where child pornography was found.
Long also said a hangman's noose and sexually violent pictures were found in the home, and the “overriding issue” was the disappearance of Susan Cox Powell.
Powell said the noose was exercise handle made from a rope twisted so his brother could lift weights.

A trial to establish permanent custody of the two boys is set for Nov. 15.

Powell children will stay with Cox family for several weeks

John Long said Josh's mentally disabled brother has answered the door in the nude in the past and is often nude inside the home.

Washington state Children's Administration officials late Tuesday sent the children to stay with their maternal grandparents overnight. Jennifer Graves, Josh Powell's sister who is estranged from her family, said it was nice to see her nephews again.

"It took them just five minutes to warm up to us," she said.

Graves, wearing purple — the color the Cox family has used to show support for their daughter since she went missing — said she and her husband came to Tacoma from Utah to support Chuck and Judy Cox.

"I believe that the boys will be in a better place if they're not with Josh at this time," she said

Porn was part of Steven Powell's 1992 divorce

A 1992 divorce case shows Steven Powell's ex-wife accusing him of damaging his children's respect for marriage. Powell was charged this month with child pornography and voyeurism after authorities investigating the disappearance of Susan Powell searched his home in Puyallup.

Susan Powell's husband, Josh, has been named a person of interest in the case, and he was recently living with Steven Powell.

In the court documents, Terri Powell wrote that Steven Powell talked of teaching his children about birth control methods when they were as young as 9 years old. Terri's sister, Becky Mulcahy, wrote in the documents that Steven Powell told her that he had shown his youngest children books about sexual intercourse when they were 6 and 8 years old.

"...............The state's attorney told the judge that during a search of the home in August, police saw a poster depicting a woman with a sword through her genitals and found a hanging noose, and that on other occasions they had arrived at the home to find Josh Powell's brother naked when answering the door.

The lawyer added that Josh Powell admitted to investigators that he had taken photos of women's legs without their knowledge, in addition to having stored some of his father's information on his personal computer.

Fifteen computers were seized from the home during the search, part of the ongoing investigation into Susan Powell's disappearance. The police found thousands of photos and videos of women and children, including images allegedly taken by Steve Powell from his bedroom window of girls as young as eight and 10 years old.

Police said the charges against Steve Powell represented only the first findings of what was on the 15 computers, and that Josh Powell was also a subject of the investigation.

Josh Powell contended that the allegation about the poster was false, and he had only heard of police seeing his brother naked as he left the restroom once.

Powell added that the 15 computers seized were mostly old and had nothing to do with pornography but were part of his career as a software developer. He said the noose was actually an exercise handle, a photo of which he had sent to the judge.

Despite Josh Powell's pleas, the judge ruled that the home was not safe for children and that the children would remain in the custody of Chuck and Judy Cox, Susan Powell's parents.

Josh Powell argued that foster care would be better for his children than living with the Coxes, but the judge denied his suggestion.

Josh Powell agreed to undergo a psychological evaluation as part of the process to get his children back, and the children were to receive state-mandated counseling.

A court status review is scheduled for November, and then potentially a trial for custody.

The judge granted three-hour visiting periods on Sundays for Josh Powell to see his children while the Coxes are at church. Josh Powell objected to the children going to church with their grandparents. ....."

I can't imagine anyone opposing the grandparents to take the kids to church...That is unless it is a religious cult type of affiliation...Some of my most cherished memories come from Sunday School and it instilled a moral code to be kind and love one another...forgive the sinner but detest the sin..All God's children are equal in his eyes...

I sure hope the authorities can come up with something concrete to pin porno charges against Josh...That ought to put him away for quite a while...His children don't need his influence in their lives...
