HOUSTON (KTRK) -- For the first time since the Mona Nelson trial started, the court heard the voice of the accused child killer. Prosecutors played a videotaped interview where Nelson admits she was at the scene where 12-year-old Jonathan Foster's body was found. Today members of the FBI will testify about additional evidence linked to the case.

New DNA evidence introduced in Houston woman's capital murder trial
August 21,2013
Updated at 04:41 PM today
by Katie McCall
KTRK (ABC) - Houston, TX
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- New revelations are coming from testimony in the murder of a 12-year-old boy. Three forensic scientists took the stand on Wednesday, testifying about the evidence in the Mona Nelson trial. She's charged with capital murder. Prosecutors are pointing out newly introduced DNA evidence.
Snipped:
Forensic examiner Shane Hoffman testified that a shoulder area tested "positive for blood...that matched Mona Nelson." Further testing turned up Nelson's "DNA on the collar and wrist areas" of the sweatshirt.
For one of the DNA tests, the witness even said the chance of it being anyone else's DNA was what's considered a statistical impossibility.
Snipped:
"Powerful evidence for the state. All of this is very powerful evidence for the state. It's enough to legally convict, from a judge's perspective, this is enough to legally convict," he said.

Re: Jonathan Foster -- Deceased 12/24/10 -- Mona Yvette Nelson Charged with Capital Murder
Hi, Ann! Me again!
I'm so relieved that the forensic evidence is very strong. It irked me a little bit to hear the defense making a fuss about LE not give her a lie detector test.
Those things are not admissible in court anyway. With such powerful forensic evidence against her--not to mention the video of her dumping Jonathan's remains, etc.--I don't see how a lie detector test that would have been inadmissible, would have been worth the State's time or expense.
I was surprised to hear that the prosecution may rest soon, and that closing arguments could begin tomorrow afternoon.
The testimony about that rather large woman possibly wearing Jonathan's tiny shirt is just mind boggling. If the chicken bones weren't bad enough, this shows a truly sick attachment to the little boy she had just [allegedly] burned with her welding torch. (I'm beyond horrified.)
I know that the defense slipped in some of their witnesses during the State's case but it is sure sounding like they don't have much of a defense.
Justice for Jonathan!

Testimony in capital murder trial centers on autopsy of child's burned body

by Katie McCall
KTRK (ABC) - Houston, TX
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Investigators took the stand again on Thursday in the Mona Nelson trial. She's charged with capital murder, accused of killing a 12-year-old boy.
Snipped:
For the first time we heard about the autopsy of Jonathan Foster, whose body was found face down in a ditch and severely burned. Dr. Paul Radelat, a pathologist testifying for the defense, admitted that he had not actually examined Jonathan's body, but merely viewed photographs of the boy's remains and read the forensic pathologist's report. He said we may never know what happened to Jonathan, but he was confident the child was neither strangled nor burned alive.

Watched the 6PM News on TV. Katie McCall stated the State is expected to call 3 more witnesses tomorrow (8/23/13). One of those witnesses will be the Medical Examiner who did Jonathan's autopsy.
Also, today two witnesses (in Mona's taped interview, they were among people Mona claimed to have been with during the time Jonathan went missing to the time Mona dumped his remains) testified for the State and testified Mona was not with them. One was a co-worker. Also, he testified that Mona "was quick to anger." (Anger problems)

Hi, Nan11 . . .
Apparently the Defense won't put on much of a "defense". Hard to defend a torch murderer. JMO
I thought it was absurd for Allen Tanner to imply, via questioning of the State's witness, that Mona could have worn Jonathan's Looney Tunes shirt. lol Please don't insult the Judge's intelligence, Allen!!!
Won't be long and we will finally see "justice for Jonathan."

Watching the 4PM KTRK (ABC) News on TV.
Deborah Wrigley, reporter, gave a "live" update in the hallway outside of the court room.
State rested its case shortly before noon.
Defense put on a "handful" of witnesses and rested their case.
One was a lady who claimed to have seen/been with Mona drinking during the time Jonathan went missing. On cross exam, the Prosecution produced a statement she gave police (at the time) that said otherwise.
Court adjourned early today.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Closing arguments are scheduled to begin Monday the capital murder trial of Mona Nelson after both sides wrapped up testimony on Friday.
Snipped:
After the state rested its case, the defense called a handful of witnesses, including a woman who knew Nelson and claimed that she and a friend were drunk at their apartment complex at the same time Jonathan was abducted.
On cross-examination, Mary Whitt testified, "I kicked it with them. ... I wasn't drinking."
Snipped:
Final arguments will begin on Monday, then the case will be turned over to the judge. It is a bench trial and there is no jury. The judge will render the verdict.

DA: woman killed boy for not letting her in apartment
By Brian Rogers | August 26, 2013
Houston Chronicle - Houston, TX
Prosecutors Monday said Mona Nelson lost her temper and kidnapped, then killed a 12-year-old boy for not letting her in the door of the apartment where he was staying the afternoon of Christmas Eve 2010.
Snipped:
Spence's closing provided the first theory on the motive behind the boy's death, as prosecutors and investigators repeatedly have said they believe Nelson killed the child, but do not know why.
Spence said Nelson, who had been drinking that day, went to see her friend, Sharon Ennamorato, who was working at a north Houston restaurant. Ennamorato said she would soon get home to the apartment she shared temporarily with the 12-year-old and his mother. She told Nelson to go there and wait for her there.
However, Spence said, Ennamorato did not call the boy who had directions to not let anyone in.
When Nelson, a former boxer who worked as a welder, got to the apartment about 2 p.m. and found the boy would not let her in, things went horribly awry, Spence said.

HOUSTON -
A Harris County judge said she will read her verdict Tuesday morning in the case of a woman accused of murdering a Houston boy.
Snipped:
"She burned him with this torch at her house on that rug with these tanks," said Connie Spence.
Prosecutors also argued Nelson's DNA was found on the little boy's sweatshirt and video showed Nelson dumping the body.
"The evidence leads to one person only and that is Mona Nelson," said Spence.

Judge deliberating verdict in capital murder case
Updated at 06:14 PM - August 26, 2013
by Miya Shay
KTRK (ABC) - Houston, TX
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Testimony in the murder trial of Mona Nelson is over. Now we wait for a verdict -- not from a jury but from a judge -- and if that judge decides Nelson is guilty of killing 12-year-old Jonathan Foster, her punishment sentencing will be swift.
There are very few options when it comes to punishment in this case. This is a non-death penalty capital murder case, so if the judge finds her guilty, Nelson will spend the rest of her natural life behind bars without a chance for parole.
Snipped:
It's up to the judge to render a verdict in the case. The court goes back into session Tuesday at 10am, but it's not yet known if the judge will deliver the verdict at that time.

HPD News Conference video - Dec. 2010
It has been a long time since I've listened to the Houston Police Department (HPD) News Conference held in December, 2010.
I do believe Mona is a cold hearted killer without a soul. No remorse whatsoever per HPD Det. Michael Miller (News Conf. video linked below).
HPD did their job and Connie Spence, Prosecutor, was able to use the evidence HPD collected against Mona Nelson in her trial. Hopefully, she will be found guilty.

@ Ann - Thank you for linking the above. I had forgotten he had said he believed--at the time--that Jonathan may not have been Nelson's first victim.
It gives me cold chills thinking about that.
Regarding the video of her arrest--yes, I had watched that, too; and thought the same thing. That is why LE had such a hard time putting together a line up, imo.
We should have a verdict from the judge, soon. I can't even envision that it could be anything but guilty.

HOUSTON—The woman accused of murdering a 12-year-old boy and then trying to dispose of his body is now waiting for a Harris County judge to decide her fate.
Snipped:
Prosecutors, while admitting from the start that they would not be able to establish a motive for the murder, said that Nelson, a maintenance worker and welder, murdered the boy in a drunken rage, then burned and dumped his body.
Snipped:
"The evidence leads to one person only and that is Mona Nelson,” said prosecutor Connie Spence in her closing statement, who again showed the surveillance video that captured Nelson dumping the body. Prosecutors said evidence ruled out the stepfather of any involvement. Prosecutors also have a sweatshirt they found in Nelson’s garbage that was identified as belonging to Foster. Nelson’s DNA was found on the back and on the collar.
“That is the link. That is why we know this defendant took Jonathan Foster back to her house and killed him. ........"

Nelson will now serve life in prison without parole. She was accused in the kidnapping and murder of Jonathan on Christmas Eve in 2010.
Snipped:
“I am extremely convinced, I am 100-percent convinced that there was no other person that was involved in this case....everything leads to Mona Nelson, absolutely,” Prosecutor Connie Spence said.
Snipped:
District Judge Jeannine Barr returned with a decision in the case on Tuesday morning.
In court Nelson reacted calmly to Barr’s decision. When asked if she had anything to say Nelson said, “I’m innocent, and an innocent person is going to prison.”

Mona Nelson guilty of capital murder in death of 12-year-old boy

KTRK (ABC) - Houston, TX
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Houston woman accused of kidnapping and killing a 12-year-old boy nearly three years ago learned her fate Tuesday morning. A judge found Mona Nelson guilty of capital murder in the 2010 death of Jonathan Foster.
Snipped:
Prosecutors Connie Spence and Sunni Mitchell spent two weeks methodically building their case, with multiple witnesses, cell phone records, and even grainy surveillance video. Taking no chances, even though they only had to convince a judge of one instead a jury of 12, that Nelson was guilty of murder.
Jonathan's mother was not in court Tuesday morning, but prosecutors spoke with her after the verdict was announced.
"I just talked to her on the phone and she let out a whoop of you," said Spence. "She felt very satisfied. Obviously, this is not in any way going to diminish her missing her child, but the fact that someone is held responsible, I think she's very, very grateful for."

HOUSTON -
Mona Nelson, a welder and former boxer was found guilty of Capital Murder Tuesday morning, and sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole for the murder of a Houston boy.
Snipped:
“She tried to accuse me of having something to do with it. It's hard enough to lose someone you love without being accused of it.” Davis said after the verdict was handed down.
Davis was excluded as a suspect after police turned up cell phone records and video showing he was at a local ice house during the time the boy was killed.
Homicide investigators found Foster's sweatshirt with Nelson's blood on it, and pieces of charred carpet found with his body in a trash can at Nelson's house.

Judge finds woman guilty in death of 12-year-old boy
By Brian Rogers
Houston Chronicle - Houston, TX
August 27, 2013 | Updated: August 27, 2013 9:49pm
Angela Motal said she long ago forgave Mona Nelson for abducting and killing her 12-year-old son two years ago.
However, she still wants an answer to the biggest question about Jonathan Foster's death on Christmas Eve 2010: Why?
"I wanted to ask her so many questions, but I couldn't and that was hard," Motal said about testifying against her son's alleged killer. "I wanted to get her in a room and give her my own interrogation."
Snipped:
Motal said she believes God has a plan that includes her forgiving Nelson, and the verdict means her son can "finally rest in peace."
Despite saying she had forgiven Nelson, Motal did not return to the courtroom for closing arguments.

This video (click on Link below) to honor Jonathan Paul Foster was made by a friend of mine in January, 2011.
I shared some of the beautiful things said about Jonathan at his Memorial service with my friend, "Piper", and suggested she use the song which was played at Jonathan's Memorial Service in Houston, TX on January 4, 2011 in creating a video to honor Jonathan Foster. As usual, Piper did a beautiful job of creating this video.

Brief for Appellant (Mona Yvette Nelson) filed on 3/5/14 - you can read it!
The Brief for Appellant (Mona Yvette Nelson - appellant) was received and filed with the First Court of Appeals (Houston - Harris County, TX) on 3/5/2014. Oral argument is waived.
There is info in the brief that was not reported by the media and you might find it of interest.
The Brief is 45 pages long. You can read it by clicking on the pdf under Document for 3/5/2014. See Link below. I will try to Link the pdf direct also. Allen C. Isbell is Nelson's attorney of record re the Brief.
In the Conclusion and Prayer (Pages 43 and 44), Appellant prays that the judgment of conviction be reversed and the cause remanded for a new trial.
The appellee's (State - District Attorney's Office - Houston, Harris County, TX - Appellate Division) Brief is due on or before 4/4/2014 (per the Notice - pdf on 3/5/2014).
I am very interested in the State's response to appellant's (Mona Nelson) Brief.
Warning: Some may consider the discussion, in the brief, about Jonathan Foster's burnt body graphic.

Good review of the case provided years ago by Ann -TX.Ann - Tx wrote:
