More than two years of searching and holding out hope ended Friday, and now family and friends want nothing more than justice for Hailey Dunn.

Scurry County officials confirmed that the remains found near Lake J.B. Thomas back in March were identified as missing Colorado City teenager Hailey Dunn.

Hailey's paternal grandmother, Connie Jones, was devastated by the news.

Scurry County officials, along with representatives from Texas DPS, the Texas Rangers and the FBI have confirmed that the remains found in Scurry County on March 16 belong to missing Colorado City teenager Hailey Dunn.

The investigation into her death is ongoing.

John Young told NewsWest 9 that Texas Rangers contacted Billie on Friday around 2 p.m. and informed her that the human remains were her daughter.

He says Billie's family is gathering in Austin to make travel arrangements to West Texas.

Wehba and two other searchers, Holly Jenkins and Terrye Newcomb, met Saturday afternoon in the front yard of Hailey’s former home at the corner of Chestnut and 18th streets in Colorado City. They pulled weeds, mowed the yard and affixed a larger-than-life vinyl banner of a photo of Hailey to the home’s roof, one that had previously served as a billboard poster.

Business Owners Remove Hailey Dunn Missing Person Signs from Storefronts

"It probably gives everyone a sense of closure," said Alexander Coronado, who works at Bigg's Pizza & Grill in Colorado City.

Many around Colorado City couldn't wait to take down the missing person signs hanging on their door fronts, except not under these circumstances.

That's the image they'll remember, while, for others who knew Hailey personally, that picture of her dressed up in her cheerleader uniform doesn't come close to capturing all she was.

"That wasn't Hailey at all," said longtime neighbor Travis Walston, "Hailey was bubbly and fun and full of personality and life, and she was also really strong."

But now we'll never see how that image would have progressed.

COLORADO CITY - The past 28 months have been rough for Terrye Newcomb and all those who worked tirelessly to find Hailey Dunn, the 13-year-old girl who went missing back in 2010.

"The saddest part about this being Hailey and her remains being found, is that beautiful smile you see up there, we're never going to get to see," Newcomb said while holding back tears.

Billie Dunn's attorney John Young spoke with NewsWest 9 Thursday to clear some things up.

Young told NewsWest 9 Hailey's remains are still being investigated, which is why they haven't been released to Hailey Dunn's mother, Billie. He also said regardless of what some may want to believe, Billie is just a mother, who will have to lay her child to rest, far too soon.

"We are not made privy or aware to how that investigation is proceeding," Young explained.

At this time, Dunn is not being questioned in the disappearance and death of her 13-year-old daughter who went missing from Colorado City more than two years ago.

Investigators into the death of Colorado City teen Hailey Dunn are remaining tight lipped about any new information into the manner or cause of her death or when her remains will be released to her family.

Hailey Dunn’s mother has not been questioned by investigators since the remains were found March 16 at Lake J.B. Thomas in Scurry County.

Katherine Chaumont, the spokeswomen for the FBI who is based in Dallas, said that Scurry County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Rangers, Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Rangers are among the agencies participating in the investigation.

So far, the remains identified as the Colorado City teen missing for the past two-and-a-half years have not been returned to the family, so a date for a funeral or memorial service has not been set. Remains found at Lake J.B. Thomas in March were identified as Hailey’s last Friday through DNA.

“Hailey will be released to me, but it might not be real soon as they are being meticulous collecting any evidence,” Billie Jean Dunn wrote. “I'm grateful they are keeping me updated and doing everything to insure they miss nothing. I want her home, but am definitely not going to rush them. I trust they are doing everything necessary to get what they need & to get her home.”

Her attorney, John Young said the teen’s mother wants to hold a memorial service that will be open to the public “to allow Hailey’s story to be told.”

FBI seeks tips in Colorado City teen Hailey Dunn's death

Calling it “sensitive information,” the FBI won’t disclose how many tips investigators have received since the remains of Colorado City teen Hailey Dunn were identified as those found in March in Scurry County.

However, spokeswoman Katherine Gilkinson Chaumont acknowledged investigators continue to receive tips – and urged individuals, regardless of the amount of information they may have, to consider contacting authorities.

“Even if they think information they have is insignificant,” Gilkinson Chaumont said Friday.

The FBI is asking “anyone with information about the disappearance of Hailey” to contact the Scurry County Sheriff’s Office at 325-573-3551, the FBI Dallas Division at 972-559-5000 or submit a tip online at tips.fbi.gov.

A Big Spring man who found teen Hailey Dunn’s remains won’t be able to collect a more than $10,000 reward once offered in Colorado City – unless plans change.

Curtis Lloyd, however, could still garner an up to $15,000 FBI reward, although no one – including himself – appears ready to talk about if it already has or will ever become a reality.

Lloyd came across Hailey Dunn’s remains in March near Lake JB Thomas in Scurry County.

About five months ago, Colorado City officials – believing the teen would never be found alive – dissolved the town’s reward fund and returned at least $10,000 to donors.

COLORADO CITY The mood was somber Sunday as hundreds gathered to remember the life of Hailey Darlene Dunn, the Colorado City teen whose remains were found near Lake Thomas in Scurry County more than two months ago.

Candles flickered inside the Colorado Middle School gym that was decorated throughout with orange and purple, which organizers said was "all for Hailey" - to celebrate her life.

A huge floral arrangement, that spelled out "Hailey"in purple flowers, adorned a table at the front of the gym, along with huge sprays of purple and orange flowers.

It's been over a month since remains found in Scurry County were identified as Hailey Dunn's. And since then, no word has come out as to how she died. And while many have their theories, confirmation takes time.

"There could be skull fractures, there could be broken bones. Forensic pathologists can examine those bones and determine whether these are impact wounds or old fractures or new fractures, or if they've healed or if they haven't," said Sgt. Lynn Beard of the Abilene Police Department.

"I don't have no kind of involvement with my niece missing," said Del.

It's been two and a half years since Hailey Dunn went missing.And her uncle is finally speaking out.

"The day she went missing, I was in county jail," he said. "I got out of jail that day."

I hope the powers that be pay no mind to it, honestly.  I desperately want to see charges laid, but only when law enforcement feel they are ready.

I feel that Hailey is safer now and more protected than she ever was in her entire life.

Hailey Dunn is a 13-year-old West Texas cheerleader who went missing from her home on December 27, 2010 in Colorado City, Texas.  Hailey’s scattered remains were found less than 20 miles from her home at Lake J. B. Thomas in Snyder, Texas this past March 16, 2013.  There have not been any arrests, any viable suspects, or viable public persons of interest announced.  We are asking that Scurry County Sheriff Trey Wilson to please convene a Grand Jury to look at evidence if they do, in fact, have a viable suspect.  Hailey’s remains have been sitting in an evidence room since their discovery in March of 2013.  If Sheriff Wilson does not have the evidence or ability to convene a Grand Jury to look into Hailey’s case, we ask that Hailey’s remains be released to her mother, Billie Jean Dunn, so she can lay her precious daughter to rest.  The pain and agony of having to bury her daughter should not be compounded by knowing her child’s body lay on a shelf in a box.

I think I see a man that blames himself for not doing more, though.

Although it has been three years since Hailey Dunn left her home and was seen never alive again, the Colorado City community still longs for answers.

No arrests have been made at the time and many of the people that spent hours searching for Hailey want justice for her.

FBI says investigation continues

Just over three years since 13-year-old Hailey Dunn went missing, the investigation continues into her disappearance and ultimate murder.

But some milestones were reached in 2013 in the case of the Colorado City teen who disappeared on Dec. 28, 2010, from her home.

In the three years since her disappearance, investigators from Colorado City, Mitchell County, the Texas Rangers, the Department of Public Safety and the FBI have followed countless leads but to no avail. And now, the FBI is officially the lead investigating agency in the case.

On March 16, 2013, the remains of the Colorado City teen were found near Lake Thomas in Scurry County. The remains, accompanied by some clothing, were positively identified as belonging to Hailey Darlene Dunn on April 26.

Just The Facts

Timeline:

◾Hailey Dunn was first listed as a runaway, but on Jan. 3, 2011, a task force including FBI investigators, local, area and state law enforcement took on the investigation.

◾According to affidavits from Mitchell County, Hailey was last seen by Shawn Adkins on Dec. 27, when he said she went to spend the night with a friend. But the friend’s family would tell police that Hailey never showed up there that night, affidavits state.

◾Investigators looked at family members first and both Billie Jean Dunn and Adkins would flunk a polygraph. Investigators cleared Hailey Dunn’s biological father Clint Dunn almost immediately after she was reported missing.

◾Early on, Billie Jean Dunn asked Adkins to move out of their home after he flunked a polygraph test. Police later confiscated a computer from Adkins’ mother’s home, which was found to contain almost 109,000 images of child porn, bestiality and deviant acts.

◾Billie Jean Dunn and Adkins reunited briefly, but separated again in 2011, this time for good. (No charges were ever filed on Adkins for the images found on the computer.)

◾Adkins never gave any statements to any member of the media except the Associated Press, when he denied any involvement with Hailey’s disappearance.

She was last seen on December 27, 2010. KTXS took a brief look back on Hailey's life and the impact she had on the community:

I would never have "signed" the aforementioned "Petition."

It is unfortunate and tragic that Billie Jean Dunn brought Shawn Adkins into Hailey's life.  Then after Hailey's so called "disappearance", Billie Jean Dunn and Adkins both failed their polygraphs.  She lied and protected Shawn Adkins when LE came to her home regarding Adkins.  He was in her home and she told LE that Adkins was not there.

For the longest, Billie Jean (BJ) Dunn supported Shawn Adkins and continued her relationship with him even after he was named a person of interest and then suspect in the disappearance of Hailey Dunn.

What did BJ Dunn do in efforts to help find Hailey? Nothing!  Oops, she left Colorado City and moved to the Austin, TX area.  If she knew that Hailey was really "missing" and would be back, why would she move from Colorado City?

I bet it is driving Billie Jean Dunn up the wall because LE does not divulge all of the info they have regarding the Hailey Dunn case.  I hope that every possible test has been done on Hailey Dunn's remains before her remains are released to any one.  If Hailey's remains are released to Billie Jean Dunn one day,  I wonder if Billie Jean Dunn will have Hailey's remains cremated . . . any possible evidence destroyed forever.

As a mother, Billie Jean Dunn failed to protect her daughter, Hailey Dunn.  I hope one day, at the very least, she will be charged with injury to a child by omission.  Or . . . maybe LE has evidence that will result in a greater charge against Billie Jean Dunn.

What happened to Hailey, Billie Jean Dunn?

Hhmmm . . . . she kind of reminds me of Abigail Young in the Emma Thompson case.  

All of the above is "just my opinion."  At Reality Chatter, we support justice for the victim.  Maybe one day there will be justice for the murder of Hailey Dunn.

I agree Ann with what you said. Further more, if Billie didn't have some knowledge of her dtr's death then why hasn't she spoken up about Shawn's involvement? Is it because Shawn has the goods on her too?

LE must not have enough concrete evidence to arrest them which is way to bad.
Yes, thank everything that is good that there are no statue of limitations on murder.
It's really sad though that Hailey isn't getting justice at the moment for all the years she was missing and now at an ME's office just waiting to be laid to rest one day.

Hailey Dunn: Adkins Still a Suspect, Investigators Following Leads

COLORADO CITY, TX) - Investigators are still considering Shawn Adkins a suspect in the murder of Colorado City teen Hailey Dunn, though the are following other leads as well. Adkins was the boyfriend of Hailey's mother she she disappeared in late 2010.

The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers recently featured Hailey Dunn as part of their new 'unsolved crimes' program designed generate new leads for cases in the state that have gone cold.

Adkins is still a suspect in crime, according to DPS who claims they are investigating other leads as well - tips of all kinds are coming in from individuals claiming to know what really happened to Hailey.

Investigators told KTAB/KRBC that Hailey's remains did provide information that's aiding their search for justice, but that information cannot be released without compromising further investigation.

What was once Hailey Dunn's home will soon be a vacant lot. According to Colorado City's City manager, David Hoover, Hailey's mother, Billie Dunn, and her former boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, left the home about three years ago. Since they left, the city took over the home. Hoover says they have tried to maintain the house, but it became a hot spot for squatters. He says drugs continued to make their way in and out of the home, which posed a danger for the community.

"We've tried to close it several times, and we've gone through it and found drug paraphernalia," Hoover says. "We just decided it was better for our community if we go ahead and get rid of the house."

Hoover says the home became such a safety hazard that the city decided not to salvage any of the scrap metal, or allow the public to salvage any of it.

"We were afraid to let any of our people try to salvage any of the metal out of it," Hoover says. "Because of the prevalence of needles and syringes you never know what you're going to get."

Seeing the home being demolished brought back memories of the Hailey Dunn case for Hoover.

"It was really tense days here," Hoover recalls. "As you know, we're all protective of our children and grandchildren, s the case may be, and it worried all of us. It still does."

Hailey Dunn's father, Clint Dunn reached out to the city to try and save what was once his daughters home.

"Clint came back four or five months ago," Hoover says.

He says Clint Dunn was "wondering what it would take to save it, but wasn't willing to do what it would take."

Hoover says that the city planned to wait to demolish the home, but they "wanted to wait until they had at least made an arrest," but the safety of the community needed to be considered....."
