Search for a better life ends in horror

Early evening at the River Ridge apartment complex in Canton is a swarm of activity. Residents come and go, walking dogs, checking mail, unloading groceries.

As it turns out, police say, Jorelys’ killer also was close by, lurking unnoticed by others.

Sometime around 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 2, just minutes after Jorelys left the playground and went home to get a drink, police said, the new maintenance man either lured the friendly child or dragged her to a vacant apartment nearby, police said. There, he beat, raped and stabbed her to death, authorities said.

Three days later, her body was found stuffed in a trash compactor.

The alleged snatching and killing of a child by a stranger is among the rarest of crimes. That, along with the grisly circumstances of the killing and the fact that her body was tossed away and compacted like yesterday’s trash, sent waves of revulsion, then fear through the community.

Cherokee sheriff: Mistake made during Rivera investigation

Two Cherokee County Sheriff's deputies will face disciplinary action for failing to immediately report blood they saw in a vacant apartment while a search was underway for missing 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera.

The two uniformed deputies, one a trainee and another a 3-year veteran, were assisting in the search for the girl who had disappeared Dec. 2 from the River Ridge apartment complex playground.

Rivera's body was found three days later in an industrial trash compactor. Police say she had been sexually assaulted, stabbed and beaten.

Sheriff: Jorelys case required outside help

By the time a massive search was under way for a missing Canton girl, the 7-year-old was likely dead. But two weeks after the first-grader was last seen alive, questions linger regarding the police investigation that ultimately led to the girls' body.

The case of missing Jorelys Rivera was not one local police should have handled alone, Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison told the AJC Thursday. Canton mayor Gene Hobgood said he wants an outside consultant to determine if the city's police department properly handled the case.

Mayor calling for review into handling of Jorelys Rivera case

Canton's mayor is demanding a full review of how police responded to the recent kidnapping and murder of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera.

Thursday afternoon, Canton Mayor Gene Hobgood confirmed his call for that investigation with Channel 2 investigative reporter Aaron Diamant. Also, for the first time the Cherokee County sheriff went on record with his concerns about the initial search for Jorelys.

A deputy who failed to report finding blood in a apartment while searching for a missing girl in Canton has been disciplined for his error.

On Dec. 2, 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera went missing from a playground at the River Ridge Apartment complex.

Several law enforcement departments conducted a massive search for the little girl, whose body was later found in a trash compactor near the complex three days later.

Deputy disciplined in Rivera investigation

The Cherokee County deputy that failed to report seeing drops of blood during the Jorelys Rivera investigation must undergo additional training and will face a 36-hour suspension if he has any further discipline issues, Sheriff Roger Garrison said Friday afternoon.

"I feel very badly about having to discipline my officer that was there trying very hard to find the little girl," Garrison said. "This is a great officer. We maintain he was doing exactly what he was instructed to do."

Estee, you are on the wrong thread. Jorelys Rivera was found a few days after reported missing. After a funeral service in Canton, GA, she was buried in Puerto Rica.

Confusion stymied Jorelys Rivera investigation

An internal affairs report released Wednesday by the Cherokee County Sheriff reveals a state of confusion prevailed during the second day of the search for 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera, before GBI officials were called in to assist local authorities.

Not only did two deputies fail to report seeing blood in a vacant unit that was later determined to be the crime scene, two city of Canton firefighters also did not report seeing the blood during a separate search of the unit earlier that day.

The report provides the clearest picture yet of how the search for Jorelys unfolded after she was reported missing and explains the delayed reporting of the blood discovery.

Canton Police officers were looking for a child who might have been hiding or who had perhaps gone to a friend's house without her mother's permission after getting a call last month that 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera was missing.

It would be three days before the grim truth was confirmed: Somewhere between her home and the playground at the River Ridge Apartments, Jorelys was snatched.

A friendly child with an independent streak, Jorelys had a history of running away, according to Canton Police Chief Jeff Lance. Brunn has been indicted on one count of murder, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated battery, and two counts of cruelty to children in the first degree.

CANTON, Ga. - Ryan Brunn, the apartment maintenance worker charged with murdering seven-year-old Jorelys Rivera, pleaded guilty to all of the charges against him Tuesday afternoon. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

During the court hearing, Brunn provided his own graphic account of the murder of Rivera.

Brunn said he found one of Jorelys' roller skates. He took a picture of the skate with his cell phone and then hid it in a vacant apartment. "I was going to lure her in for sex," Brunn told the court.

7-year-old's killer commits suicide two days after pleading guilty

An apartment groundskeeper convicted of molesting and murdering a 7-year-old Canton girl committed suicide Thursday in a state prison, two days after he was sentenced in Cherokee County to spend life in prison without parole.

Kristen Stancil, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections, confirmed late Thursday that 20-year-old Ryan Brunn was found unresponsive in his cell at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson at 4:15 p.m. He was taken to a local hospital and was pronounced dead at 5:37 p.m. The case has been referred to the GBI for further investigation.

JACKSON, Ga. -- Ryan Brunn, the man who confessed to killing seven-year-old Jorelys Rivera was found dead in his prison cell Thursday. He hanged himself, a source told 11Alive's Kevin Rowson.

"Ryan Brunn was found unresponsive in his cell at 4:15 p.m.," Kristin Stancil, a spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Corrections said in an email to 11Alive News. "He was pronounced dead at a local hospital at 5:37 p.m. of an apparent suicide."

Canton Police Chief Jeff Lance resigned Thursday after a scathing independent report said he and his department mishandled the initial investigation into last month's disappearance and gruesome murder of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera.

Canton Mayor Gene Hobgood, who asked for the review last month after criticisms of the department's search for Jorelys, called the 19-page report by LaGrange Police Chief Chief Louis Dekmar "indicting."

Lance, who had said last week he didn't expect the report to cost him his job, didn't return calls seeking comment Thursday.

The admitted killer of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera was not under a suicide watch when he used his sweatshirt to hang himself in a prison cell, state corrections officials said Friday.

Ryan Brunn, 20, was being held in segregation at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson while being processed into the state prison system two days after his guilty plea. He was found unresponsive in his cell around 4 p.m. Thursday and pronounced dead after being taken to an area hospital.

Mental health staff at the Jackson prison evaluated him on Wednesday and opted not to place him on suicide watch, according to Kristen Stancil, a Department of Corrections spokeswoman.

Atlanta (CNN) -- Autopsy results released Friday revealed that Ryan Brunn, the Georgia man who this week admitted murdering a 7-year-old girl, committed suicide by hanging himself in a prison cell, a state agency said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, in a news release, said the autopsy indicated that Brunn died of "ligature hanging and the manner of death (was) suicide."

The 20-year-old hung himself with his sweatshirt, investigators determined. A medical examiner didn't find any "other significant trauma on Brunn's body."

Ryan Brunn, the 20-year-old maintenance worker who confessed on Tuesday to killing 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera, hanged himself, according to one of his court-appointed attorneys and the spokesman for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

"My understanding was that he may have used his jumpsuit and hanged himself," David L. Cannon Sr. said. "That's what I know."

At 2:08 p.m. today, GBI spokesman John Bankhead confirmed that Brunn hanged himself with his prison-issued sweatshirt.

Atleast, no one will be charged with his death, and he got what he deserved. Maybe he just couldn't live with himself for the rest of his life.

ATLANTA -- The GBI conducted an interview with Ryan Brunn just one day after the discovery of Jorelys Rivera's body. It was December 6, 2011-- the day after investigators had found the body of Jorelys Rivera. The seven year old girl had been abducted and murdered four days earlier.

Brunn was an employee at the apartment complex in Canton where the girl lived. At this point he was only a potential suspect.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation released the body of admitted murderer Ryan Brunn to a North Georgia funeral home after a GBI autopsy Friday determined his cause of death. CANTON — New details have emerged in Canton Police Chief Jeff Lance’s resignation last week amid a scathing report regarding how his department handled the Jorelys Rivera abduction and murder investigation.

Lance received six weeks of severance pay, amounting to $9,230, City Manager Scott Wood said.

Jorelys Rivera's killer speaks: GBI releases polygraph video

The day after the body of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera was found in a trash compactor and the day before he was charged with her murder, 20-year-old maintenance man Ryan Brunn repeatedly told investigators he knew nothing about the child's death and the disposal of her body.

Brunn committed suicide in state prison last week, two days after he pleaded guilty to the Dec. 2 murder and sexual molestation of Jorelys at the River Ridge apartments in Canton.

His denials were revealed in a video of a GBI interview that took place five days after she disappeared. The video was released Thursday.

Atlanta (CNN) -- The day after little Jorelys Rivera's mangled body was found in a suburban Atlanta trash compactor, Ryan Brunn sat in a stark room for a police interview. He began with confidence, but ended with trouble.

Keith Sitton, a special agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, hooked up the jeans-clad Brunn to a polygraph machine. Then, he fired off a series of questions to the 20-year-old maintenance man. A videotape of Brunn's polygraph test was released Thursday.

GBI releases Ryan Brunn's confession tape

Atlanta, GA (WXIA) - When Ryan Brunn pleaded guilty to the murder of seven-year-old Jorelys Rivera, he told the court in detail how he abducted and killed her.


Almost immediately after that plea, Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents Dustin Hamby and Brian Whidby spent more than two hours picking Brunn's brain, trying to learn as much as they could about him, to help them in future cases.

After several minutes of repeated questions and coaxing Ryan Brunn finally admitted that he had fondled children before he killed Jorelys Rivera.

"I guess I did it more than one time. I guess I did it a few times but it wasn't in the same day."

He says he was always attracted to children. I'm sorry it took Jorelys' violent rape and murder to kill himself. He wasn't sorry about that though, he was sorry he got caught and he couldn't face prison. At least there's one down that can't hurt another child.

Jorelys Rivera's mother sues apartment complex

The mother of a murdered 7-year-old girl contends a Cherokee County apartment complex hired a maintenance man with a history of crimes against children. And that man, Ryan Brunn, confessed to the brutal killing of Jorelys Rivera days after her body was found in a trash compactor.

Joselinne Rivera, Jorelys's mother, claims that the River Ridge at Canton complex failed to do an adequate background check on Brunn in a civil lawsuit filed Feb. 9 in Fulton County State Court.
