Jill Meagher suspect facing more charges

The man accused of murdering and raping Jill Meagher has been charged with seven new offences.

Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, appeared on the charges, including three counts of rape, in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday.

He was remanded in custody and will face a committal mention on April 26.

Magistrate Amanda Chambers refused a request by Bayley's lawyers for a suppression order during the court appearance.

THE man accused of the rape and murder of Jill Meagher has faced court charged with new sex offences.

Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, is facing seven new sex-related counts linked to an attack on a woman in Elwood in November 2000.

Sexual Crimes Squad detectives have charged Mr Bayley with three counts of rape, two counts of intentionally causing injury, and single counts of making a threat to kill and unlawful imprisonment.

Adrian Bayley has been accused of raping Jill Meagher three times before murdering her, a court has heard.

Mr Bayley's defence lawyer revealed in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday that he had been charged with two additional counts of raping Ms Meagher.

When Mr Bayley, 41, was arrested on Thursday, September 27, he was initially charged with one count of rape and one count of murder.

Jill Meagher Case, Husband Attends Hearing: Accused Faces One Count of Murder, Three Counts of Rape

Jill Meagher's husband, Tom Meagher, attended on Tuesday the court proceedings that heard the defence's request to adjourn the committal hearing which is expected to begin on Mar. 12.

Accused man Adrian Ernest Bayley appeared in court only via video link. Two more counts of rape have been added to charges filed against him. Bayley now faces one count of murder and three counts of rape.

Bayley's counsel, Helen Spowart, requested that the committal hearing against Bayley be adjourned for four weeks. The defence meant to delve deeper into some forensics report about DNA, the counsel said. Bayley, according to Spowart, was seeking an independent textile expert to look into Jill Meagher's clothing at the time her body was found.

Magistrate Felicity Broughton heard the request, but refused the application. The defence already had sufficient time to make relevant inquiries in relation to the Jill Meagher case, the court said.

ROLLING COVERAGE: JILL Meagher's accused killer pleads not guilty to her murder as new footage appears of her last steps.

6.30pm: New footage of Jill Meagher's last moments have been caught on CCTV footage, released by the courts and obtained by the Herald Sun.

4.35pm: Adrian Ernest Bayley has been committed to stand trial in the Supreme Court for the alleged murder and rape of Jill Meagher.

Bayley, 41, stood in a protective dock at Melbourne Magistrates' Court this afternoon and pleaded not guilty to the single count of murder and two of the three counts of rape he was facing.

He pleaded guilty to one charge of rape.

A distressed Tom Meagher stormed out of the courtroom after Bayley announced his pleas.

Bayley will appear in the Supreme Court for a directions hearing on March 25.

Jill Meagher's accused killer Adrian Ernest Bayley watched movies after attack, court documents show

THE man accused of murdering Jill Meagher after raping her in a laneway then slept into the afternoon and enjoyed kebabs and watched movies with his de facto, according to court documents.

In a police statement tendered in court during Adrian Bayley's committal hearing, his de facto partner said that after news reports broke about Ms Meagher's disappearance, he warned her not to walk alone.

"I said, 'Oh, she's pretty and ... works for the ABC,' and he goes, 'Yeah ... that's why I'm saying that this place is not safe'," the woman said.

"He goes, 'Don't walk alone at night'."

Photographs documenting the case emerged from the police brief of evidence.

The photos, which were tendered during Bayley’s committal hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court yesterday, were obtained by the Herald Sun this morning.

The photos document the crime scene in the Hope St laneway in Brunswick where the Irish-born ABC employee, 29, died after being raped.

IT was Friday night and time to socialise. Melbourne's bars were full of people marking the end of another work week and catching up with friends.

At the Brunswick Green Hotel, Jill Meagher was with workmates from the ABC, where she worked for local radio.

At the Lounge Bar in Swanston St, pipe layer Adrian Bayley and his girlfriend were drinking with his mates from Rangedale Drainage Services.

The bars were at opposite sides of town. There was nothing to connect the young Irish woman with the fitness fanatic with the close-cut hair.
Such was the randomness of Jill’s brutal death.

Dark secret: Calm after the crime

FOR a man hiding a dark secret, it was a pretty average Saturday. A sleep in with his girlfriend, then kebabs, followed by a video night at home.

To his de facto partner nothing seemed out of the ordinary, even the fight they'd had the night before was already forgotten.

But less than 12 hours before Adrian Ernest Bayley had raped Irish-born Jill Meagher three times before slipping his hands around her throat and squeezing until she was dead, Melbourne Magistrates Court heard last week.

Full of cider and high spirits, 29-year-old Jill must have presented as an easy target as she tottered home alone in the dark. She would have felt safe enough walking the near-deserted footpath along Brunswick's cosmopolitan Sydney Rd, the odd taxi driving by in search of the last of the Friday night revellers.

Adrian Bayley's trial date set for alleged murder of Jill Meagher

THE man accused of killing Jill Meagher has been ordered to stand trial a week after the first anniversary of her death.

At a Supreme Court directions hearing this morning Justice Geoffrey Nettle set down the trial to start on September 30, eight days after the anniversary of Ms Meagher’s murder on September 22.

The court heard the trial could last up to three weeks and is expected to be completed before October 30, what would have been Ms Meagher’s 31st birthday.

Bayley appeared via video link from Melbourne Assessment Prison for this morning's brief hearing.

Adrian Bayley pleads guilty to murder of Jill Meagher

ADRIAN Ernest Bayley has pleaded guilty to murdering Jill Meagher.

Bayley appeared in the Supreme Court, and responded with "guilty" after being asked for his plea to the charge of murdering Ms Meagher in Brunswick on September 22.

Bayley, a 41-year-old pipeline layer, also pleaded guilty to one count of rape.

Justice Geoffrey Nettle accepted the pleas.

Bayley, of Coburg, was remanded to reappear in the Supreme Court on June 11 for plea and sentence.

Justice Nettle will sentence Bayley on a date to be fixed after that. None of Ms Meagher's relatives was at court.

It was the moment Jill Meagher's family had been waiting for: Adrian Ernest Bayley finally pleaded guilty to murdering the ABC employee.

Bayley, 41, had admitted raping Ms Meagher in a Brunswick laneway but denied killing her.

He was due to stand trial on September 30 for her murder before dramatically changing his plea on Friday.

Bayley, a twice-divorced father of four, appeared before Supreme Court judge Geoffrey Nettle just after 2.15pm to formally enter his guilty plea to the murder charge.

When the charge was read out to him, he stood in the dock and replied: ''Guilty.''

Lawyers warn government against Bayley overreaction

The Law Institute of Victoria has urged the state government not to bow to populist anger at the sentence given to Adrian Bayley for the murder of Jill Meagher.

Police Minister Kim Wells, however, says he hopes the serial rapist "rots in hell".

Bayley has been sentenced to life behind bars, with a non-parole period of 35 years, for the rape and murder of Ms Meagher in Brunswick last September.

After the sentence was handed down, a Facebook group called "Life Should Mean LIFE. No Parole" gathered more than 53,000 likes before being shut down on Thursday.

Tom Meagher gives his first interview since his wife Jill Meagher's horrific death

The husband of murdered rape victim Jill Meagher has slammed the justice system that he says failed to protect his wife.

In an interview following the conviction of Adrian Ernest Bayley, the man who raped and murdered his 29-year-old wife, Tom Meagher described Jill's killer as "unreprentantly evil" saying he had been let off too many times.

Bayley was yesterday sentenced to 15 years in prison for rape and life for murder with a non-parole period of 35 years. Mr Meagher told ABC's 7.30 his sentence was "a disgrace".

"Given what this man has done in the past, I think that 15 years is a disgrace, considering the maximum penalty for rape is 25," he said.

"I don't know what the maximum penalty is for if it's not for that man. Who else could fit the bill of a maximum sentence for rape than Adrian Ernest Bayley?"

For Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey Nettle, the brutal rape and murder of Jill Meagher as she was walking home after a night out with friends was one of the worst crimes imaginable.

Sentencing Adrian Ernest Bayley to life imprisonment with a minimum of 35 years on Wednesday, Justice Nettle said Bayley was a sexual deviant who had intended to murder Meagher, 29, either because she was threatening to call the police after being savagely raped or because he had taken a perverse pleasure in taking her life.

The judge said Bayley's offending was particularly heinous and made worse by his attempts to conceal Meagher's body and the fact he had raped and murdered the ABC employee while on parole.
