POLICE in Australia are now investigating just how close Jill Meagher got to her own doorstep before she disappeared.

Crucial CCTV footage obtained by police shows the 29-year-old just minutes from her home and less than 100 metres from the street where her handbag was found.

The investigation took a significant step forward with the revelation that she was only a short distance from her house when last seen.

The disappearance has been the main story on Australian media for days.

Officers want to discover just how close to home she got before being possibly abducted.

Police chief: No suspects yet in Jill Meagher disappearance case

Police in Australia have no suspects at this stage after the disappearance of Jill Meagher, who has been missing in Melbourne since the early hours of Saturday morning.

Investigators say that they have grave concerns for the welfare of the Drogheda native.

They are now looking to make contact with a number of people identified on CCTV footage outside a shop which she passed on her way home.

In particular, they want to talk to a man dressed in a blue hoodie who was seen talking to Jill at 1.43am.

Irish family 'living a nightmare'

NEWS of Jill Meagher's disappearance has made headlines on the other side of the globe, as members of her family in Ireland say they have been living a ''nightmare'' since she went missing.

The ABC Radio employee's disappearance has been widely reported in the Irish press - including the Irish Examiner, The Irish Times and the Irish Independent - and has received airtime on BBC News and ITV in London.

A freelance photographer for the Irish Independent was among the media crews outside the Brunswick apartment building Ms Meagher shares with her husband, Tom, when the couple's apartment was searched by police on Tuesday.

Ms Meagher's uncle Michael McKeon, who lives in Ireland, told the Irish Independent that her disappearance had taken its toll on his family.

UPDATE: A MYSTERY man captured on CCTV talking to Jill Meagher before she disappeared was earlier seen running after her, a witness has claimed.


The witness says new CCTV footage given to police shows Ms Meagher walking unsteadily along Sydney Rd oblivious to the man running towards her.

The witness has told police a car did a sudden U-turn towards Ms Meagher as a man wearing a blue hoodie closed in.

The new CCTV showed the car and also a second man walking some distance ahead of Ms Meagher, the witness said last night.

Police last night would not confirm the witness reports.

Meanwhile, a man who was pictured in the CCTV footage wearing a red sweater, posted on the Facebook page "Help us find Jill Meagher" saying he had put himself forward to police to give a statement.

The man, who works at a small media company in North Melbourne, encouraged anyone else pictured in the footage to come forward and speak to police.

CCTV footage of Jill Meagher speaking to a man in a blue hoodie outside a bridal store shows that the man was trying to lead her somewhere, a body language expert has said.

Police have released the footage, taken outside a boutique in Sydney Road between 1.39am and 1.43am on Saturday, which shows the ABC employee's last known movements.

Ms Meagher moves into the frame about four-fifths of the way through the 2½-minute clip, accompanied by a man with short brown hair, wearing jeans and a blue hoodie.

A body language expert, David Alssema, said it appeared the man was trying to lead her.

UPDATE: A MAN who came forward to police after seeing himself on crucial CCTV footage has told how he did not see the man in the hoodie, or Jill Meagher before she disappeared.


Brunswick resident Daniel Gregson, who was wearing a red jumper on the night of Jill's disappearance, told the Herald Sun he called Crime Stoppers after he realised he may be able to help.

Before the CCTV was released, he had also gone over in his head multiple times the journey home, to try and compare his late night walk home from the pub, to that of Jill's ill-fated walk home.

“Earlier in the week I had kept looking at my phone logs because based on the timeline and based on when my partner phoned me.

"I took her call just as I was leaving The Retreat Hotel on my way home and it was probably five minutes to 1 or 2 o’clock (am) and I said I’d be home in around five minutes,” Mr Gregson said.

“Between then and five or ten minutes later I decided to stop off for a kebab.

Police have flooded the streets of inner-city Melbourne with officers close to where ABC radio employee Jill Meagher vanished in a feared weekend abduction.

Detectives hold grave fears Ms Meagher, a 29-year-old who moved from Ireland to the city three years ago, became a victim of foul play while walking home alone on Saturday from a bar on Sydney Road at Brunswick.

Victoria Police Acting Inspector Gary Stokie says officers have been dispatched to increase safety in the area, with boosted highway, bike and foot patrols.

Plainclothes detectives are also at the ready.

"We understand local residents are apprehensive and we are here to reassure them and to listen to their concerns," Acting Insp Stokie said in a statement.

A police information caravan has also been set up near the corner of Sydney Rd and Hope St - close to where Ms Meagher is seen on CCTV footage speaking with an unknown man in a blue hoodie outside a bridal dress store.

After releasing the footage on Wednesday, police are yet to find the man.

Jill Meagher: We're caught in a living nightmare, say family

THE Irish family of Jill Meagher have spoken of her recent trip home and told how they are caught in a 'living nightmare' as they wait and hope for news that she has been found.

Speaking from her hometown of Drogheda, her uncle Michael McKeon said that "the world has come to standstill" for her family in Australia.

"You can't really think about what is next. It is too early to think of the worst. People still have hope," Mr McKeon said.

Jillian spent time with Michael, his wife Liz and their daughters earlier this month in Louth.

"She was very happy, she was only home two or three weeks ago and there was no inclination she was unhappy or that she had any major problems," Mr McKeon said.

His brother Denis leaves for Perth today to join her parents George and Edith.

A man is expected to be charged with the rape and murder of missing ABC radio employee Jill Meagher.

The 41-year-old Coburg man was arrested in Coburg at 2.30pm (AEST) on Thursday.

He continues to assist police with their inquiries.

Detective Superintendent Brett Guerin said the man was expected to be charged with rape and murder.

Detectives had been wanting to talk to a man in a blue hooded jumper seen on CCTV footage with Ms Meagher moments before she vanished in the early hours of last Saturday.

Police have not said if the Coburg man is the person in the hoodie.

A 41-year-old man is expected to be charged in connection with the disappearance of Jill Meagher in Melbourne later this evening.

Victoria Police arrested the man in the North Melbourne suburb of Coburg earlier.

It follows the emergence of further CCTV footage which suggests Jill may have been followed for several hundred metres along a busy Melbourne road in the final moments before her disappearance.

Reporter Lauren Hilbert from 3AW radio in Melbourne said the charged were expected to be of the most serious nature.

"We're being told that it is a homicide investigation," she said. "We're hearing he will be charged with homicide-related offences and abduction offences.

"We don't believe this man had any connection to Jillian and we're also hearing that he did not have any prior history (of offences)."

Police have arrested - and are expected to charge - a man over the rape and suspected murder of Jill Meagher, who disappeared early Saturday while walking 700 metres home from a Brunswick bar.

Yesterday afternoon, more than five days after Ms Meagher, 29, was last seen leaving the Sydney Road bar, police arrested the 41-year-old Coburg man.

The man was being questioned by police at St Kilda Road police headquarters last night. No charges had yet been laid.

Police described it as an opportunistic, random attack.

Brunswick locals in shock after arrest in Jill Meagher case

BRUNSWICK traders and residents were in shock tonight following the arrest of a 41-year-old Coburg man who is expected to be charged with abduction and murder.

A worker at a Sydney Rd shop, which provided the police with key CCTV footage, said everyone was scared, including the staff, "so everyone would be relieved that police had (arrested) someone".

"All the owners around here were very scared, but last night there were still girls walking around here," said the worker, who did not want to be identified.

"It's a great relief and everyone will feel safe."

She said she checked the footage on Sunday morning.

"I wasn't even supposed to be around here, but I thought I would check, randomly," she said.

The worker was unnerved to know she was watching the last moments before Ms Meagher disappeared.

Jill Meagher's body found, man charged

A man has been charged with the murder of missing Melbourne woman Jill Meagher.

Adrian Ernest Bayley, a 41-year old from Coburg, was charged early on Friday morning, almost a week after the Irish-born 29-year-old disappeared while walking the short distance home from a Brunswick bar.

Police have also confirmed the body of alleged murder victim Jill Meagher has been found about 50 kilometres northwest of the Melbourne CBD.

Bayley was arrested at his home at 2.30pm (AEST) on Thursday.

He was charged with rape and murder about 2.30am on Friday and appeared before a brief out-of-sessions court hearing in Melbourne.

POLICE have found the body of missing woman Jill Meagher about 50km north-west of Melbourne.

Officers made the discovery early this morning on Black Hills Road at Gisborne South.

The body was in a shallow grave about five meters from the road.

Police say they were led to the scene by the man charged with the murder and rape of Ms Meagher.

Bayley was remanded at an out-of-sessions court hearing shortly before 3am that lasted only 90 seconds at St Kilda Road Police Station.

The bail justice told Bayley he should not be given bail given the seriousness of the charges against him.

THE "heartbroken" family of murdered ABC staffer Jill Meagher say they are "powerless to describe their loss".

The 29-year-old's Ireland-based uncle Michael McKeon said the family were "devastated" but wanted to thank everyone around the world who had supported the effort to find Ms Meagher.

"We are devastated. We are heartbroken. She was the first grand-child my mother had and her aunts, uncles and cousins are powerless to describe their loss," he said in a statement issued on behalf of the family.

"There are no words to describe how we feel at what has happened. We had hope yesterday when there was no evidence of foul play but when the man in the CCTV footage was arrested we feared the worst," he added.

"We acknowledge the role that social media has played in the search for her. We believe that it has helped us to reach a conclusion although it is not the one we had hoped and prayed for.

"We thank the people around the world who have supported us".

UPDATE: JILL Meagher's husband Tom and her brother, Michael, have arrived at Melbourne Magistrates' Court for the filing hearing of the man accused of her murder.

The two men sat in courtroom one alongside a female homicide detective.
Midway through other matters this morning, Deputy Chief Magistrate Jelena Popovic noted that there were "grief stricken" relatives in court and mentioned that the detective in charge of the Jill Meagher case and the prosecutor, Luke Exell, might like to talk with the family members about the matter before it goes ahead.

Ms Popovic said the court would like to manage the matter as "sensitively" as possible.

Husband faces Meagher's accused killer

The man accused of raping and killing Melbourne woman Jill Meagher has appeared in court.

Ms Meagher's grief-stricken husband Thomas and brother Michael McKeon held hands as Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, of Coburg entered the courtroom at Melbourne Magistrates Court, Nine News reporter Karen Huff tweeted.

Bayley was wearing a T-Shirt and kept his eyes downcast during the hearing.

One of Ms Meagher's supporters yelled "maggot" as Bayley left the courtroom after the brief appearance.

Bayley will reappear in court for a committal mention on January 18.

Even though the circumstances are different, this case have some commonalities with the Mickey Shunick case; both were crimes of opportunity. It is a very devastating experience for the families and a terrifying experience for the victims. I can only imagine the horror of being in that situation.

Body of missing woman Jill Meagher found

Colleagues of Melbourne woman Jill Meagher have been paying tribute to her today, after her body was found and a man charged with her rape and murder.

The Irish-born 29-year-old's body was found early this morning off a dirt road about 50km northwest of the Melbourne CBD.

Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, of Coburg, has been charged with her rape and murder.

Colleagues mourn loss

Jill Meagher's distressed colleagues at the ABC are describing her as a witty, vibrant young woman who became an innocent victim when she had her whole life ahead of her.

"On behalf of Local Radio Victoria, we are deeply saddened and pained by the tragic news of the death of our friend and colleague Jill Meagher,'' the broadcaster said in a statement on Friday.

"Our thoughts go out to Jill's family and friends, so devastated by the passing of this wonderful young woman.''

Man charged over Jill Meagher case

Police discovered Ms Meagher's body buried in a shallow grave beside a dirt road in Gisborne South about 1.45am today.

The grave is just metres from the road under a tall tree.

The remote area is surrounded by paddocks and is about 45 kilometres - or a 40-minute drive - from where Ms Meagher, an Irish national, was last captured on CCTV footage walking north along Sydney Road in Brunswick.

While the area is remote, there are farm houses within about one kilometre of the grave.

The coroner removed Ms Meagher's body from the scene about 4am today, and an autopsy will be carried out to determine her exact cause of death.

Bayley accompanied police to the grave last night and remained there for about 1.5 hours, before he was taken back to the St Kilda Road police complex where he faced an out-of-sessions court hearing.

The public rightly feel great relief that there has been a breakthrough in the Jill Meagher case, after such a high level of community interest in the case.

But now the work really starts for investigators. That includes tying up the lose ends; chasing all the rabbits down their burrows; and presenting the best possible facts to the court.

It is then up to the court to determine innocence or guilt.

......Actually, the hard slog comes now. The clock is ticking on investigators who now have six weeks to prepare their brief of evidence.

In this case, a great deal of information has been gleaned from the community, including upwards of 100 calls to Crime Stoppers, forensic evidence, witnesses from taxis, trams, shops and passers-by near the scene. And, information still keeps coming through to the police.

All of this has to be followed though. Investigators must present every relevant fact to the court.

And what is also foremost in the mind of police is that they work by the rulebooks, knowing crooks don't. It has to be done right.

The community probably also don't know that the numbers of police involved in the Jill Meagher investigation is relatively small, perhaps just two dozen.

THE accused killer and rapist of ABC worker Jill Meagher was yesterday described as a "smiling easygoing average Joe" and a keen fitness fanatic.

Adrian Ernest Bayley, a muscular 41-year-old who spent time at Fenix Fitness gym in Coburg, married at age 18 after his then girlfriend fell pregnant.

He went on to have another baby by her. One child would now be aged in the 20s; the other, a teenager.

Mr Bayley, born on July 14, 1971, did an apprenticeship in 1993 and qualified as a pastry cook, and was regularly employed.

But his six-year marriage ended in separation in 1995.

THE man charged with the rape and murder of ABC Radio employee Jill Meagher is a father of four who once worked as a pastry chef and has a history of using prostitutes.

Adrian Ernest Bayley, who was known as Adrian Edwards before he legally changed his name 12 years ago, had been living in a granny flat in a quiet, tree-lined street of Coburg in Melbourne's north before his arrest on Thursday.

As neighbours yesterday expressed their shock at discovering the man they had seen but had fhrarely, if ever, spoken to had been charged over Ms Meagher's abduction and death, details began to emerge about Mr Bayley's life.

The 41-year-old had an emotionally and physically abusive childhood, and a violent and fractured relationship with his father for many years.

Colleagues and family of Jill Meagher have recalled 'a wonderful life force' and 'best friend' in the wake of the discovery of her body.

Smart and cheerful, the popular 29-year-old was the life of the office at the ABC radio studios in Melbourne.

The Irish national disappeared in the early hours of last Saturday on a short walk to her Brunswick home from a bar where she had helped celebrate a workmate's birthday.

After a public plea for help from her husband Thomas Meagher and a large-scale social media campaign to solve the mystery, the discovery of her body in a shallow grave 50 kilometres northwest of the city on Friday realised her family's worst nightmare.
