Iasparro made sure to thank the public for their search efforts in this missing person turned murder case. He says that was a big part of how they were able to bust Smith.

"Each item that was recovered, each interview that we conducted, piece by piece was all part of the larger picture here," said Iasparro.

Both the Sheriff's department and State's Attorney's office kept tight lipped about most of the actual details of the case. They are led to believe that Smith acted alone, but mention that the investigation is on going.

"I will not foreclose anything that might come to light down the road from the investigation," said Joe Bruscato, Winnebago County State's Attorney. "But at this point in time we are not alleging that this was done in concert with anyone else."

Husband held for homicide

Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato said Todd Smith’s arrest was made after the investigation report from the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department was presented to the State’s Attorney’s Office. He declined to comment on any evidence collected in the case or any motive in the crime. He added that the investigation is ongoing.

Todd Smith is being held at the Winnebago County Jail in Rockford on $4 million bond. He is scheduled to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Courtroom B at the Winnebago County Justice Center.

He set his family house on fire, his parents and his younger brother (half-brother), who was 12 years old at the time, were inside the house, they were able to escape unharmed before the house burned to the ground. Todd was 17 years old when that happened, he was sentenced to 30 months of probation.

According to news reports, he told the police he did it because he was having problems with his parents.

"In 1992, he legally changed his given name to Todd Smith, court records said."

I've read that his father's last name is Smith and that he was adopted by Mr. Raprager when he married his mother.

Todd Smith, the man accused of murdering his wife, Katrina Smith, made his first court appearance Saturday, Nov. 24.

Smith did not enter a plea Saturday and was appointed a public defender. He told the court via a closed-circuit TV feed his family is trying to raise funds to hire a private attorney.

It is believed Katrina was killed in the couple’s Machesney Park home at 8239 Tetterhall Lane.

Her body was reportedly placed in the trunk of her Chevrolet Cruze and transported to the Rock River, where it was discovered nearly three weeks later.

ROCKFORD — Todd Smith appeared in court briefly today for the first time since he was charged Wednesday with the murder of his wife, Katrina.

Smith, 45, of Machesney Park, appeared in court by video link from the Winnebago County Jail, where he sat with his ear to a jail phone and listened as Judge John Truitt read the four counts of murder and one count of concealing a homicide that Smith faces.

Smith is charged with beating his wife to death on or around Oct. 22, when Katrina Smith, 30, first went missing, and with concealing the homicide by placing her body in the Rock River. Two of the counts allege “brutal or heinous behavior indicative of wanton cruelty” that could carry a 20- to 100-year prison sentence. Truitt asked whether Smith understood the charges.

“Yes, sir,” Smith replied.

Guess that's the sort of thing one ought to consider prior to murdering one's wife. *Sob, sob. Cry, cry.* Not feelin' too sorry for him, but her poor family that will spend their first Christmas season without her - I just hope they get justice and that the system serves Katrina's memory properly, and that they're able to find peace and comfort following such unimaginable pain.

Days after his arrest for the murder of his wife Katrina, Todd Smith made his first appearance in Bond court on Saturday. Wearing a yellow jumpsuit with his hands shackled to his waist, Smith remained mostly quiet, hanging his head while the judge spoke. At one point Smith appeared to break down and cry as the judge asked him "do you think you can afford a lawyer?" his response: "no sir, I don't think so". Smith is being held on 4 million dollars bond and if convicted faces up to 100 years in prison. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 21st.

MACHESNEY PARK (WIFR) -- There are new details in the murder investigation of Machesney Park woman Katrina Smith. Prosecutors say she was beaten to death.

Today we finally got a copy of the complaint filed against Todd Smith and while the documents don't give a lot of information, they do confirm prosecutors think she was intentionally beaten to death and her husband was the one who dumped her body in the Rock River.

Prosecutors say the crime was brutal and heinous and they will try to prove to a jury that Smith should get extra time in prison.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- New details were shared in court today on how Katrina Smith died. Her husband Todd Smith plead not guilty to eleven counts related to her death.

A tearful plea to bring Katrina Smith home, has now turned into a plea in the courtroom.

45-year-old Todd Smith told a judge today, he's not guilty of killing his wife and hiding her body.

Smith's family packed today's court hearing as Judge John Truitt described how police say Katrina Smith was killed. Investigators believe Todd beat her with a baseball bat, stuffed her into the trunk of a car, and then dumped her remains into the Rock River, before leading the community on a search for her body.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Todd Smith was back in court today. You may remember he's accused of killing his wife Katrina Smith and dumping her body in the Rock River. Today he told the court he wants some of his personal belongings back, specific things police confiscated during the investigation.

Court records indicate police found printed internet maps in his car and they also collected his i-pass records. Smith's defense attorney is asking the prosecutor to turn over a lot of evidence in the case, including receipts that were found in Katrina’s wallet and copies of the surveillance video taken from the Kohl's store the night of her disappearance. He's back in court January 22nd.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Machesney Park man accused of brutally beating his wife to death and dumping her body in the river was back in court this morning.

Today a judge said Todd Smith could have his car keys back. When he was arrested, the keys to his jeep were taken from him. According to court documents, the Jeep is in a storage unit and needs to be removed. It's unclear whether the Jeep will be used in evidence.

ROCKFORD — Todd C. Smith has asked Judge John Truitt to try his first-degree murder case elsewhere, fearing that he cannot receive a fair trial in Winnebago County.

Today, Smith’s public defender, Margie O’Connor, filed motions for a change of venue and to suppress evidence. A change of venue is typically granted when attorneys have demonstrated that a defendant could not receive a fair trial because of extensive pretrial publicity.

Smith, of Machesney Park, has pleaded not guilty to all 11 counts listed in the bill of indictment

MACHESNEY PARK (WIFR) – It’s been one year since a Machesney Park woman was brutally murdered and thrown into the Rock River. Today her family is trying to carry out her name.

Katrina Smith went missing on October 22nd, 2012 sparking a month-long search that many people in our community took part in last October. Her body was found about a month later in the Rock River near Byron. Her husband, Todd Smith is charged wither death and is still awaiting a trial. He’s plead not guilty to first degree murder and will be back in court again on November 1st.

Since her death, Katrina’s family has started the Sissy’s Foot Prints Foundation, which provides grief counseling for other families dealing with loss.

ROCKFORD (WREX) - A Machesney Park man accused of killing Katrina Smith takes the stand to ask for some evidence to be thrown out. Todd Smith is accused of beating Katrina Smith to death and throwing her body in the Rock River last year. While Katrina Smith was a missing person's Todd Smith was questioned and police asked to search his home.  He agreed twice, signing two different consent to search papers with officers but had asked to be there when it happened.

Smith was before a judge today asking for what was found during the search to be suppressed. On the witness stand, Todd Smith described himself as stress out and that he was even confused at times. He says he wanted to help police search for Katrina so he signed the papers but he didn't really read the fine print.

ROCKFORD — Todd C. Smith failed Friday in his attempts to convince Judge John Truitt that his rights preventing illegal search and seizures were violated as authorities looked for his missing wife, Katrina Smith, in October 2012.

After reporting the 30-year-old woman missing to Roscoe police officers Oct. 23, 2012, Smith testified that he had given written consent hours apart to two separate searches the next day of their Machesney Park home under the condition that he be present.

Todd Smith Charged in Investment Fraud Scheme (Video)

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – The man accused of killing his wife and dumping her body in the Rock River is also charged with stealing nearly a million dollars.

46-year-old Todd Smith and 36-year-old Travis Oliver of California have both been charged with several counts of mail and wire fraud. The indictment accuses Smith and Oliver of lying to people to invest their money. Smith and Oliver involved with Electus Asset Holdings allegedly schemed investors from 2009 to 2012 out of over $983,000.

Smith is also facing murder charges for the death of his wife, Katrina. She was killed in 2012.

ROCKFORD — Winnebago County prosecutors have filed new charges that will raise the stakes at the trial of a Machesney Park man accused of beating his wife to death with a bat and throwing her body into the Rock River.

Todd C. Smith, 46, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and other charges in a new, 22-count Winnebago County Grand Jury bill of the indictment. The new indictment replaces a December 2012 version of the charges and doubles the number of criminal counts a jury could eventually consider.

It also adds several versions of the murder charge with claims of “brutal or heinous behavior” that would result in a sentence of up to natural life in prison.

Smith has denied killing his 30-year-old wife, Katrina Smith, since his November 2012 arrest.

New twist in 2012 murder case, a look back at the killing of Katrina Smith

The attorney for accused killer Todd Smith presented a new twist in the case Monday, one she says may cast doubt on the state’s charge that her client beat his wife to death in 2012.

Assistant Public Defender Margie O’Connor asked the court for sealed police reports involving a juvenile charged with stalking a family acquaintance two years before 30-year-old Katrina Smith was found beaten to death in the Rock River. O’Connor said there could be a link between the juvenile, who was charged with peeping in a Smith-neighbor’s bedroom window, and the homicide.

In a slightly surprising move, Judge John Truitt allowed O’Connor access to the records she requested based on Todd Smith’s claim that Katrina believed she was being stalked before she was killed. The juvenile is someone the Smiths knew from a church youth group.

Prosecutors say it was Todd Smith–and Smith alone–who killed his wife, and if anyone was stalking her it was him. It is believed Smith beat Katrina to death with a baseball bat in their Machesney Park home sometime during the evening of Monday, Oct. 22, 2012.
