Jodi Arias defense costs top $2 million

PHOENIX (AP) -- Jodi Arias' legal bills have topped $2 million, a tab being footed by Arizona taxpayers that will only continue to climb with a new penalty phase set for March, officials said Monday.
...As of Monday, the county had paid $2,150,536.42 for her court-appointed attorneys, expert witnesses and other costs associated with her case, Maricopa County spokeswoman Cari Gerchick told The Associated Press.
Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery has refused to provide a tally of how much it has cost to prosecute the case, citing a court order that attorneys not discuss Arias-related matters.

WOW CP, and that doesn't even count what the prosecution has spent on this trial.
It feels like to me that someone needs to step up and tell JA no more, that's enough of your shenanigans.

I know, One, and the prosecutor's office says that they are not allowed to reveal that due to a court order, so we may never know.
I don't think they can do that, as she's entitled to due process, as is every person. I wish they could, though!

Jodi Arias Trial News Update: Arias Vows to Go 'Radio-Silent' on Twitter
Jan 30, 2014 11:11 AM EST
Snipped:
-----
Although the convicted murderer is forbidden from accessing cell phones or computers while she sits behind bars awaiting her sentencing trial, she often uses Twitter to declare her innocence and solicit donations. However, that may soon come to a halt. On Wednesday she tweeted "I'm going radio-silent soon," adding, "but first a few things" followed by information and an article regarding a recent study that discovered varying levels of arsenic in over 60 rices and rice products.

Re: Jodi Arias--Trial for the murder of Travis Alexander #24
I do not understand why the remainder of her sentencing phase cannot be televised due to the media attention adversely affecting her, but she is still allowed to communicate via Twitter. If she's allowed to do that by the court, cameras should be allowed in the courtroom. If she's not allowed cameras, she shouldn't be allowed any communication with the public. JMO

Jodi Arias trial date put aside due to prosecutor's conflicting trial
By Michael Kiefer and Adriana Torres
The Republic | azcentral.com
Tue Feb 11, 2014 6:16 PM
The March trial date set for convicted killer Jodi Arias has been put aside because of a conflict prosecutor Juan Martinez has with another potential death-penalty trial.
Martinez is supposed to begin trial May 12 for Bryan Hulsey, 40, who is charged with the 2007 murder of Glendale Police officer Anthony Holly. The Hulsey trial has been repeatedly postponed.
In a hearing Tuesday at Maricopa County Superior Court, Presiding Criminal Judge Joseph Welty weighed priorities in the two cases.

Jodi Arias doesn't want her new jury to know what she thinks of her lawyer, or about a former cellmate who claims Arias wants prosecutor Juan Martinez killed.
Two motions filed in Maricopa County Superior Court today ask Judge Sherry Stephens to stop the information from coming out in the upcoming sentencing-phase trial.

JA should pray she is never left alone with herself for she IS her own worst enemy!
That and her mouth....
I have no sympathy for her since she is the motivator of the info against herself.
IMO, the judge should leave it alone. After all, IF JA did not want it out there surely she would shut up.

Games and more games.
I have to wonder IF JA thot up this new game on her own or if Nurmi assisted her...
" ...The first motion calls for Judge Stephens to keep a 15-page letter written by Arias on Oct. 22 out of the jury's sight. In the 33-year-old Arizona resident's request, she asked the judge to give her another defense attorney, saying she didn't trust lawyer Kirk Nurmi. She reportedly wrote that he didn't "like her," citing an "utter poverty of people skills."
One of the new motions states that both of Arias lawyers will have to step away from the case if the retrial jury catches wind of Arias' request for a new defense attorney, the Phoenix New Times reported.
"Ms. Arias draws the Court's attention to this rule because of the claims and/or assertions contained in Ms. Arias' Motion to Change Counsel are somehow deemed relevant and in turn admissible, both of Ms. Arias' attorneys would then become witness as they would then have relevant perspective on the claims and/or assertions Ms. Arias' made in this motion," the legal document reads. "Thus...both of Ms. Arias' attorneys would be ethically bound to withdraw. This withdrawal then would interfere with the rights due Ms. Arias..."
The second portion of the request asks that allegations made by Arias' former cellmate Cassandra Thea Collins be omitted from the case.
Collins revealed to FOX-10 News during a November interview that Arias was "dangerous" and reportedly made threats to slit the throat of the prosecutor who wanted to give her the death sentence.
"She said if she's given a death sentence, she wanted to get her revenge," Collins said at the time. "She [said she knew] inmates on the outs to do a mafia bowtie. Cut his throat. I really think she would try to hurt someone."
The motion states that Collins didn't have any real proof to back her comments, and she "was found criminally incompetent to stand trial and had mental health problems of such severity that she was involuntarily committed to a mental health facility."
Arias, who was found guilty of killing former lover Travis Alexander in his Albuquerque home, will soon stand trial, but Judge Stephens hasn't set a rescheduling date just yet. ..."

I too would love to get my claws on her, however I'd rather not go to prison to do this. LOL. Someone should do to her what she did to Travis. I thought I seen them all until JA came along, she is the worst of the worst. Too bad Travis didn't see this coming.
My heart and prayers go to his family.

Does anyone know when this trial will finally go forward? I now hear that the date of Mar. 17 is cancelled. Has no new date for sentencing phase been reset yet???

Re: Jodi Arias--Trial for the murder of Travis Alexander #24
Haven't heard when this trial will finally go forward and I was wondering if any of the jurors were having any thoughts/reflections on what their actions (failure to do their job) have brought about. The b&^%h is living in relative comfort to what she should be in, continuing to plagiarise decent peoples artwork that benefits her looney family, holding 'court' with other inmates, feeding BS to her weird friend to pass on via twitter, continuing her lies and playing the victim, and just generally continuing to LIVE! It's not right and I'm madder than hell. I'd love to know where they are now and hope that their lives have been impacted in a negative (but not catastrophic) manner. AJMO.

I just stumbled on this.
Have two other links I want to share:

" ...Maria De La Rosa, the mitigation specialist who was carrying the drawing in a packet of legal papers, has been banned from the jails. She has at least five other clients facing the death penalty. ..."
This is a good court link.
USA Today:
Mentions the Sept court date.

I can't believe people are stupid enough to fall under that monsters spell and do her bidding for her at the risk of losing their own careers. If you are stupid enough to do it then you deserve whatever is handed to you in punishment. Who ever she works for will most likely fire her and there goes her career. Tata career!

Ban lifted on Arizona jail visits for Arias defense team member
BY DAVID SCHWARTZ
PHOENIX Wed Mar 19, 2014 9:48pm EDT
(Reuters) - Arizona sheriff's officials lifted a ban on Wednesday on jail visits by a key member of Jodi Arias' defense team over accusations she tried to smuggle one of the convicted murderer's drawings out of the facility, an administrator said.
Mitigation specialist Maria De La Rosa, who helps gather information to spare clients the death penalty, will be allowed to see Arias and other clients inside any of the Maricopa County jails, said Jack MacIntyre, the Sheriff's Office chief deputy.
"I think we have made our point on this matter," MacIntyre said. "She has been re-instated immediately and there are no other conditions."

Jodi Arias Trial: Experts Say Defense at a Disadvantage With New Jury in Sentencing Phase
By Zachary Stieber, Epoch Times | March 27, 2014
Snipped:
-----
As for the new jury, O’Mara believes that it works against the defense.
“Problem that we have with this new jury, they only get the overview of the case. Unfortunately, if there was going to be success for the defense, it was having Jodi Arias on the stand for so long that you sort of got to like her or got to realize that she was a little bit nutty,” he said. ”They’re not going to have the emotionalism attached to it. I think it’s going to work against Jodi Arias.”

I couldn't find any official links, but over at WS they are following tweets from Wild About Trial. Apparently Judge Stephens sealed the proceedings and kicked the media out...she is hearing the motion about cameras. They said next hearing on July 1.
Said Jodi there in stripes, no glasses, hair long and down. Said Nurmi had lost a ton of weight and looked really good. Maria de la Boobies was also there and I believe there is a motion regarding her recent shenanigans at the jail (??).
That's all I saw!!

No live broadcast of Jodi Arias sentencing retrial, judge rules
BY DAVID SCHWARTZ
PHOENIX TUE MAY 27, 2014 4:22PM EDT
(Reuters) - An Arizona judge has rejected media requests to allow live broadcasts of court proceedings to determine if convicted killer Jodi Arias should receive the death penalty for murdering her ex-boyfriend in 2008, documents showed on Tuesday.
Judge Sherry Stephens ruled that the penalty phase may be recorded but that any resulting audio or video recordings may not be made public until after a verdict has been reached, according to court papers.
The judge also said that in the unlikely case she opts to change course and allow limited live broadcasts, such airings would be subject to a 15-minute delay.

Arizona judge rejects bid to nix death penalty for Jodi Arias
BY DAVID SCHWARTZ
PHOENIX Fri May 30, 2014 5:08pm EDT
(Reuters) - An Arizona judge has again turned down a bid by convicted murderer Jodi Arias to be spared the death penalty during her sentencing retrial for killing her ex-boyfriend in 2008, court documents showed on Friday.
In a written ruling, Judge Sherry Stephens dismissed claims made by attorneys that the case was compromised when a key member of Arias’ defense team was temporarily barred from visiting Maricopa County jails.
“The defendant has failed to establish she suffered any prejudice as a result of the incident involving the mitigation specialist,” Stephens said in a ruling logged by the court on Friday but dated May 27.

Okay kids hold onto your hats for this:
JA had a hearing today to "represent herself". Judge S tried to talk her out of it but she wasn't having any of it. Nurmi and Wilmont will remain in case she "needs" them, lol.

Uggghhh, I can't find a link I got this from WS.

Judge Stephens has ruled that Jodi Arias can represent herself in the upcoming penalty phase of her murder trial.
The 34-year-old Arias could face the death penalty for killing her ex-boyfriend in his suburban Phoenix bathroom six years ago in a jealous rage.
She was convicted of murder last year, but the jury was deadlocked on whether she should get life in prison or the death penalty. A new trial to determine the sentence is scheduled to begin Sept. 8.
Arias told the judge Monday of her intentions to act as her own lawyer. Judge Sherry Stephens granted the request.

The tension is rising.
"Will JA find herself incompetent to represent herself?
Will JA ask the judge for new counsel?
Stay tuned..."
IMO, this broad has a hard time NOT trying to control everyone and everything around her.
I think back to when she purportedly "had her way" with .... Bobby.
Recalling the statements regarding JA leaving high school.
Recalling statements of when she decided to sneak out of the house, how she wanted her own car, etc.
JA knows no boundaries.
She IS determined to try Juan Martinez's patience.
Maybe, she will try for a "lawyer to lawyer" meeting and try to frame him for "inappropriate advances" or something.
Like he would be interested in a loser, a murderer, someone who reports she has hep C....
(I wonder if that showed up in Travis' autopsy or if it is something she contracted from sexual liaisons in jail?)
She is as goofy as a three dollar bill.

On a death sentence penalty phase:
It is highly unusual for a defendant to have legal counsel who is inexperienced for the penalty phase. Maybe, she is hoping to pull it out for a mistrial? I am sure this is why the judge has determined JA MUST keep counsel close to advise.

Arias has hired an investigator and wants evidence looked into at the Mesa PD.
If you guys recall back about 6 months ago I posted a YouTube video of some nut case that wanted to assist her.
He was a former Detective in the Chicago area that moved to California. It may be him. I'm searching for the video.

Holy Moly.... didn't see THAT one coming! I'm kind of surprised Judge S granted this - wonder what the precedent's are, if any??
Bottom Line....JA is playing games - what she does best! She's like that mustard seed stuck in your molar which doesn't go away. And she is going to try her darndest to "stick it" to everyone and drag this out as long as she can.

Thinking about this today.
Who represents the biggest threat to JA?
Judge Stephens.
JA is gunning for the judge. JA will try to get a mistrial.
Judge could possibly impose the death sentence (by jury) or life w/out parole.
JA will try to nullify the judge.
It will be "watch me as I dismantle Juan Martinez" with my right hand and destroy the judge with my left hand.
Her interactions with JM will simply be a distraction.
She is looking to have this judge destroyed because of the power the judge has...
JMO
Bear in mind JA HAS represented herself before!!
She grandstanded before flopping.
It was at a hearing/preliminary hearing held in July or August before the trial ....

I have to ask why she would do that Freckles? Because Judge Stephens seems to favor JAs position in my opinion.
How do you think JA will do it, cuz I haven't a clue?

Not sure. Maybe, try to get the judge to issue sanctions against her in presence of the jury, many sidebars, many objections by prosecution? Then, declare the jury has been unduly influenced and may have a bias. Perhaps, in presence of the jury, state the judge herself is biased against JA....I am sure JA would like to stretch this out as long as she can and she would feel she could control the outcome more if she had a male judge...
Just my guesses....
