A distraught mother feels like she's "walking in a nightmare" while authorities search for her pregnant 19-year-old daughter, Erin Corwin, who has been missing since Saturday and whose disappearance could be linked to foul play.

Corwin, a quiet Tennessee native who volunteers at a horse shelter, was last seen leaving her Twentynine Palms, California, home Saturday morning and was believed to be headed to nearby Joshua Tree National Park for a day trip in advance of her mother's upcoming visit, reports KESQ in Palm Springs.

Her husband, Marine corporal Jonathan Wayne Corwin, reported her missing on Sunday when she did not return to their home on a Marine base in the desert city.

Authorities are scouring a California national park for any signs of a missing 19-year-old pregnant woman and military wife who was last seen leaving her home Saturday.

The San Bernadino County Sheriff's Department said Erin Corwin, of Twentynine Palms, Calif., disappeared under "suspicious circumstances," after her car was found abandoned, The Press Enterprise reported.

Her husband, Jonathan Wayne Corwin, a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps, told investigators that his pregnant wife left their home on the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps base at 7 a.m. on Saturday, according to the newspaper.

Jonathan Corwin said his wife was headed for Joshua Tree National Park, authorities said in a press release. Her husband reported her missing the next day.

The sheriff's department said Erin Corwin’s car -- a 2013 Toyota Corolla with California license plate 7CJX519 -- was found on Monday, but declined to give the precise location where the vehicle was located.

California police recovered a missing pregnant woman's car — but they're still not sure where she is.

Erin Corwin's Toyota Corolla was spotted close to her Twentynine Palms home on Monday after the 19-year-old Marine wife went missing on Saturday, KTLA reported.

Corwin, who is three months pregnant, was last seen Saturday morning when she left the Marine base where she lives with her corporal husband to drive to Joshua Tree National Park.

She was checking out the spot ahead of a family visit, hoping to bring her mom, Lore Heavilin, there later this month, police said. Heavilin was flying to California from Tennessee to celebrate Corwin's 20th birthday, KESQ reported.

Corwin's husband, Jonathan Wayne Corwin, reported her missing Sunday when she didn't come home.

Report: Cops find missing pregnant Marine wife's car

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. - Police in Southern California have found the car belonging to the missing pregnant wife of a Marine, reports the Military Times.

Erin Corwin, 19, was last seen June 29 when she left home to travel to Joshua Tree National Park.

According to the Military Times, police have found Corwin's 2013 Toyota Corrolla and deem her disappearance suspicious enough to have deployed homicide detectives in the case.

"The specialized division was asked to assume the investigation because they felt that there were definite suspicious circumstances," San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Bachman told reporters.

Corwin is three months pregnant. She and her husband, Marine Cpl. Jonathan Corwin, are from Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and live at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Search for Marine’s pregnant wife continues in Joshua Tree



TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. – An intensive search for a Marine’s 19-year-old pregnant wife continued Thursday at Joshua Tree National Park, where about a dozen search and rescue volunteers were on the ground, assisted by a sheriff’s helicopter in the air, authorities said.

Erin Corwin, who is three months’ pregnant, disappeared five days ago after leaving her Twentynine Palms home. Her Toyota Corolla was found in the city on Wednesday, San Bernardino County sheriff’s officials said.

Corwin was last seen leaving her home about 7 a.m. Saturday, apparently headed to Joshua Tree National Park. Her husband reported her missing Sunday.

Crews have focused their search at the park and surrounding areas, although authorities said there was no indication in her car of her direction of travel or current whereabouts.

Homicide detectives are also investigating her disappearance.

Corwin was described as 5 feet, 2 inches tall, weighing 120 pounds and having brown hair and blue eyes.

(CNN) -- They had plans for the holiday weekend, to visit the zoo and stop by an amusement park. But now Lore Heavilin just wants her daughter to come home.

Nineteen-year-old Erin Corwin vanished without a trace more than a week ago. Corwin, the pregnant wife of a Marine, went missing in South California on June 28 while scoping out photography locations at Joshua Tree National Park.

"She was going to look for a couple places where we could go early in the morning and just take some pictures," Heavilin said.

Her husband, Jonathan Wayne Corwin, reported her missing the following day.

(Newser)  – Search teams have been scouring the area in and around Joshua Tree National Park for more than a week looking for the pregnant wife of a Marine. Erin Corwin, 19, disappeared on June 28 after saying she was going to look for places she could take photos in the vast California park, CNN reports. Her car has been found near the military base where her husband is stationed and police say her disappearance is suspicious, though family members are holding out hope that she may have become lost and could still be found safe.

Family members describe Corwin, who is three months' pregnant, as quiet and shy and say it would be totally out of character for her to take off. "Erin is one of those people that if this were another Marine wife out there or another young girl out there ... she would be trying to figure out how she could help," her sister-in-law tells the Los Angeles Times. "She's really young, really innocent. She's just a kind-hearted, trusting, sweet, sweet soul." Volunteers have come from as far away as Los Angeles to join the search, the San Bernadino Sun reports.

Authorities today continued their search for 19-year old Erin Corwin, who went missing at Joshua Tree National Park on June 28, amid speculation about the circumstances of her mysterious disappearance.

The mother of Erin’s Marine husband Jonathan Corwin said she’s particularity concerned about the  attention that has focused on Jonathan.

“I know that it’s everyone’s first thought that it’s the spouse,” Sheila Braden told ABC News, “but if they knew John and Erin, and the relationship they had, they would know he’s not capable of this.”

Homicide investigators are leading the search after police announced last week that there were “suspicious circumstances” surrounding her disappearance.

The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department has not named any suspects in the case.

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. - The mother of a missing pregnant woman in Southern California says she does not suspect her son-in-law in her daughter's disappearance, reports CBS Los Angeles.

Lance Cpl. Jonathan Corwin said there was nothing out of the ordinary when his 19-year-old pregnant wife left their California home for a vast national park nine days ago -- sparking an all-out search for the missing woman Tuesday using "every resource possible," authorities told FoxNews.com.

Corporal Randy Naquin, public affairs officer with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, told FoxNews.com that "we're utilizing every resource we have" in locating Corwin, including canine and helicopter units as well as search and rescue teams with expertise in tracking. More than 50 volunteers scoured the area for Corwin over the weekend.

"We're not naming any persons of interest or suspects until we're convinced a crime has been committed," Naquin said. "Right now we're treating this as a critical missing person case."

Naquin described the vast desert park as roughly the size of Rhode Island with sandy and rocky terrain and temperatures in the triple digits.

Naquin said authorities, including a team of homicide detectives, are investigating "various leads" that have come in since Corwin's disappearance.

The mother-in-law of missing pregnant teenager Erin Corwin is speaking out, telling the media that her son - Twentynine Palms Marine Cpl. Jonathan Wayne Corwin - had nothing to do with his young wife's disappearance.

Sheila Braden told television station KESQ rampant speculation that Jonathan Corwin had something to do with why his 19-year-old wife vanished is unjustified:


"John is stoic. He internalizes a lot of emotions. It's apparent he's torn up inside over Erin being missing and wants his wife back, and he's still hoping and praying that that's going to happen...

"He can't speak out, his command has asked him to be quiet.. He feels helpless because he can't help with the search."

TWENTYNINE PALMS –  Two days after 19-year-old Erin Corwin went missing, the Twentynine Palms woman's car was found near the back entrance of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center.

As the search for the missing pregnant woman continues, her husband, Cpl. Jonathan Wayne Corwin, who told investigators he last saw her leaving for Joshua Tree National Park on the morning of June 28, has been given official time off from his duties.

The search is concentrated on a 200-mile swath in and around the national park. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department has released few details because, according to a Friday evening press release, Corwin's disappearance "does not appear to be voluntary."

Investigators searching for an Oak Ridge woman who now lives in California and disappeared under suspicious circumstances two weeks ago have covered more than 200 square miles of remote desert, authorities said Friday.

Investigators said they haven’t released much information about Corwin’s disappearance because of its suspicious nature.

“When conducting investigations like these, investigators must keep in mind the potential for this search to turn into a criminal investigation at any time,” a San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department press release said. “Therefore, the information released about the search techniques, search areas, and interviews will be minimal.”

Family and friends said Corwin’s phone has been dead or turned off since Saturday, June 28, and Facebook messages, text messages, and voice mails have not been returned.

Corwin is a white female adult, and she is 5’2” and weighs 120 pounds. She has brown hair and blue eyes, and she is three months pregnant. She has no history of medical and/or psychological issues, the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department said.

CBS News 8 reviewed sheriff scanner traffic recorded on the morning the 19-year-old went missing:

In dispatch radio traffic recorded at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 29, an unidentified deputy in the field is in communication with his sergeant.

“Hey Sarge, I made contact with the RP (reporting party) over the phone. He says his wife left yesterday around 0700 and was supposed to return 1600,” the deputy reported. “She has no family. They’re from Tennessee. She’s less than two months pregnant.”

Investigators now say Corwin is three months pregnant.

At the time of the recording, Corwin had been missing for 16 hours. The deputy had just gotten off the phone with the pregnant woman’s husband, U.S. Marine Corporal Jonathan Corwin.

The husband did not provide the deputy with a description of the clothing his wife was wearing when she disappeared, according to the radio audio.

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. (CBS 8) -- We are learning more about the case of a pregnant Marine wife who has been missing for 12 days in Twentynine Palms.

CBS News 8 has confirmed the location where the young woman's vehicle was found in the desert and it is nowhere near Joshua Tree National Park, where search teams continue to focus their efforts.

A water district employee found Erin Corwin's 2013 Toyota Corolla at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Monday, June 30 about two miles from her home on base, the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms.

Her car was found near the intersection of Valle Vista Rd. and Ranch Rd., which is more than eight miles from Joshua Tree.

“It's nowhere near the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park. It’s on the other side of Twentynine Palms from where the park entrance is,” said Alaniz, who lives in the area.

Rescuers re-evaluating their search for Erin Corwin

JOSHUA TREE –  Rescue crews are re-evaluating their progress after spending two weeks in rugged terrain and hot, muggy weather to find Erin Corwin.

Once a new plan is developed, they’re expected to resume their search this weekend in and around Joshua Tree National Park for the pregnant Marine wife who’s been missing since June 28. Her 20th birthday was Tuesday.

“It’s wherever clues and other evidence might take us,” San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bryan Lane said. “As we find clues, such as a shoe impression or tracks that leads to the desert, then we fall into following more standardized search techniques.”

“We don’t want to be out there just for the sake of being out there if it’s not going to take us into a productive direction,” Lane added. “We haven’t suspended, we haven’t ended, we haven’t called off any part of the search.”

The Los Angeles and Kern county sheriff’s departments are helping.

Witness says missing Marine wife had rendezvous with man in red car (Video)

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif.  (CBS 8) -- An eyewitness has come forward in the case of a pregnant marine wife, missing for more than two weeks in Twentynine Palms.

Michael Beasley lives on Bagdad Highway, near the location where a Twentynine Palms Water District employee spotted Corwin’s abandoned, blue Toyota Corolla on Monday, June 30.

Beasley said he saw the young wife rendezvous with a man at the location, near the intersection of Valle Vista and Ranch Roads, around 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 28.

Corwin exited her blue Toyota, locked her vehicle and got inside the man’s red, compact sedan, according the Beasley. The two then drove away in the red car, he said.

Beasley said Corwin appeared to be entering the red vehicle voluntarily.

CBS News 8 has learned a total of four search warrants were drawn up June 30 and signed by Joshua Tree court Judge Jon Ferguson just after midnight July 1.

The judge agreed to seal all four probable cause affidavits associated with the warrants.

California police scour surveillance footage from base where Marine's wife vanished (Video)

California authorities are scouring surveillance video taken at gates surrounding the U.S. Marine Corps base where missing military spouse Erin Corwin was last seen, a military spokesman told FoxNews.com.

Capt. Justin Smith, a spokesman for the Marine Corps base in Twentynine Palms, said security footage was given to detectives with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department for review, after Corwin was last seen leaving the base and later reported missing. It's not known what clues, if any, the videos might have provided.

Erin Corwin missing-person case: Search warrants served

TWENTYNINE PALMS –  Four search warrants have been served in the ongoing search for Erin Corwin, a 20-year-old Marine wife who vanished from Twentynine Palms two and a half weeks ago.

According to the court documents published by CBS8, authorities sought permission to search two vehicles, one of which is Corwin's car, and two apartments on the Twentynine Palms Marine base.

The apartments are in a two-story tan stucco apartment building at 6650 Jasmine Drive, a residential area in the southeast corner of the Marine base. The warrants target apartments D and F.

Authorities have also asked for permission to search a dark-colored Jeep with Alaska license plates. It is unclear how this vehicle is related to the missing person investigation.

TWENTYNINE PALMS –  Four search warrants have been served in the ongoing search for Erin Corwin, a 20-year-old Marine wife who vanished two-and-a-half weeks ago.

The warrants cast a wide net for investigators, allowing them to search for everything from telephone records and computers to fingerprints and DNA.

The search warrant requests and the authorization to search at night were approved July 1 by San Bernardino Superior Court Judge Jon Ferguson. The four approvals came early in the morning, from 12:17 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Investigators requested the ability to search at night because the circumstances were urgent, according to the court records, "Due to ... the potential to find Erin Corwin alive, as well as the potential to lose pertinent evidence associated with this investigation."

Affidavits were sealed, but based on the information contained in them, there is probable cause that a felony had been committed, according to the court documents.

Authorities issue search warrants in Erin Corwin case

Michael Beasley, who lives near the location where Erin Corwin's abandoned car was found, told CBS8.com that the woman met a man at a nearby intersection and appeared to voluntarily enter his car before the two drove away.

“They were just sitting and chatting. If she wanted to get out of the car and say, ‘I don't want to be in this car,' she could have,” Beasley told the station. “When I came back a half hour later, just the (blue) car was sitting there. Next thing, I hear the weekend goes by and Monday morning the sheriffs are there looking for this girl because she ain't home yet."

Beasley described the man as shorter than 5-foot-9 and had short hair.

According to local media reports, Jonathan Corwin told investigators his wife -- a volunteer who worked with mistreated horses -- wanted to scout out the park in advance of a planned family visit. The Corwins are originally from Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Erin Corwin's mother had planned to visit her for her birthday in the coming weeks. Mother and daughter had already purchased tickets to visit SeaWorld, authorities said, and Erin Corwin had no known medical or psychological issues.

Corwin is described as 5 feet, 2 inches tall and 120 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.

Michael Beasley told CBS News 8 he was on his way to work when he saw a woman he said looked like Erin get out of that car get into another red car and drive away.

We reached out to Corwin's husband.

"Cpl. Corwin is currently on 'Permissive Temporary Additional Duty.' PTAD orders are issued to military personnel for official time off," wrote Public Affairs Officer Capt. Justin E. Smith in a statement.

Smith said Cpl. Corwin's spending time with family and friends as the sheriff's department continues to investigate his wife's disappearance.

Carousel Cafe owner Steve Fleischman, like many others, hopes the search doesn't lose steam until Erin's found.

"People need to be aware of what's going on in the community and what's going on as to finding somebody who's been lost, who needs to definitely be found, and praying hopefully she'll be found and found alive," said Fleischman.

NCIS joins Erin Corwin investigation

TWENTYNINE PALMS – The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is assisting the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department in its investigation into the disappearance of Erin Corwin, an NCIS spokesman told The Desert Sun on Thursday.

"We're assisting them as far as some of the more military aspects of the investigation," said Ed Buice, NCIS public affairs officer at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. "The military world is sometimes very confusing to non-military investigators. We help them connect the dots and find a way through the red tape."

The NCIS maintains an office at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, where Corwin was last seen June 28.

TWENTYNINE PALMS — “We are going to continue to search until we find her.”

That was the word from Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Station Capt. Dale Mondary about the continuing search for Erin Corwin, 19, the pregnant wife of a Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Marine, who went missing on Saturday, June 28.

Hundreds of square miles have been and will continue to be searched, he said, describing the area as stretching from the combat center to Sheephole Pass.

“The FBI has assisted us in aeriel searches,” he noted.

IMO, the search is going to be next to impossible. Think the MacStay Family? There are abandoned wells and mine shafts, rattlers and predators... These will prove most difficult for the average searcher and for a person who is lost...It is barren and devoid of human population for miles and miles. Few paved roads....

The "High Desert" (as opposed to the Low Desert of Palm Springs area) is not just hot but the roads are few, population is scattered. It is not something easy to wander about in as there is no water from streams, etc.. Death Valley is close at hand.

For those familiar with the area, this is close to where the child was abducted and later came forth; he wrote the book, "My Name is Stephen..." Stephen had been used as a sex slave and hidden away in a trailer in the High Desert.

Regarding Beasley's statements, Sheriff's spokeswoman Bachman told CBS News' Crimesider that her office "did not release that information and we did not confirm that information."

However, she said, "Because of the statements he's made, if he hasn't been interviewed already, I have no doubt he will be interviewed."

Beasley's sister, Jessica, told the station she remembered seeing Corwin's blue car, but closer to the road than it had been when it was found. She and her brother both say they believe it was later moved, according to the station.

Beasley described the man in the red car as having short hair and appearing to be less than five feet, nine inches tall, though Beasley told the station he never saw him left the car.

Human remains found in the high desert

NEWBERRY SPRINGS, Calif. - Human remains found by the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department in the high desert, are not related to the search for Erin Corwin, the missing pregnant marine wife.  Authorities found the remains in open desert near Newberry Springs.

The location isn't far from the Twentynine Palms Marine Base.

Officials say the remains have been there more than a year.  The remains were found yesterday just before 5:45.  A passerby who saw the remains contacted police.

Sheriff: Erin Corwin investigation not 'criminal'

The search for Erin Corwin has not been classified as a criminal investigation, and there are no suspects or "persons of interests" that have been identified, according to an update released Friday by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

Corwin, 20, the wife of a Twentynine Palms Marine, was reported missing by her husband, Cpl. Jonathan Corwin, on June 29 after she didn't return from a planned visit to Joshua Tree National Park.

On Thursday, Capt. Dale Mondary said the search was still, "considered a missing person investigation."
